    I really like these because I prefer a softer more blendable pencil. I like to lay down thick applications of color and blend rather than doing lots of (tedious to me) layers. If you prefer to layer these are not the pencils for you. In my opinion they are my favorite budget pencils. I don;t expect them to be Derwent or Carandache but for what they are they are fabulous!

      Ik agree totally!😃 Pricewise they are great, soft core , blend well and give strong colors. I bought the 120 square ones and the 180 round ones in a big black metal box covered with a yellow flowery paper cover. And the 120 round ones in a plastic transparant briefcase (with the 4 free little coloringbooks inside). I like all of them 🤩, maybe they are all the same...🤔😄. I prefer them for my coloringbooks, less for realistic drawing. Untill now none of them arrived broken or break while coloring/ sharpening! 🤗👏🌸

    I absolutely love these pencils..for me they are the best set I've owned and I've had prismacolor before, I love how sturdy they feel, how smooth they are and the colors are so bright 🌞 bonus i can afford these and not be afraid to use them because of high prices..🥰

    These pencils absolutely hold their own against much more expensive pencils and are ideal for colourists who can’t afford to spend £100+ on pencils to colour with and never will because they don’t need professional art products.
    I could buy 10 sets of these compared to one set of Polys 😂
    (UK Prices)
    150 Holbein £440
    120 Polychromos £180
    150 Prismacolors £132
    120 Arteza £42
    120 Brutfuner Square £18
    For that budget price, they should be compared to Crayola not Polychromos & Prismacolor. And they are much better than Crayola pencils. 😊
    Thanks for sharing your opinion though.

    These are some of my favorite budget pencils. I have prismacolor, holbeins, luminance, polychromos, but some times I feel a little more precious about those pencils and just want to play around with a budget pencil. I don't find them anymore crumby than a prisma. And I think they would be a great starter set for someone who can't afford the more expensive sets. Maybe you got a bad batch. Also on the tan toned and black paper you were comparing them to holbeins and expensive sets and that would be like apples and oranges. I think they are great pencils with really soft blendable laydown.

    I love these pencils! I found my fingers felt better gripping the square flat sides, and I do rotate the pencils as you do but found it easier to use. The mediums I use are mostly just pencils, gel pens, and recently added markers. I truly enjoy these and found them to be great to use. I do agree that the names in English would be nice, as well as a better tray set up with the strings on the sides.

      PamelasPassionforPencils does have a translation for the Chinese names. Look on her Community tab for the free download. There is an excel spreadsheet with quite a lot of information about the name of each color as well as the culture and history behind the name. No need to wonder what the names are, or to try and redo all the work of translation. One of my favorite color names is “First Love.” It’s a very soft lavender that is so beautiful. It’s easy to add the color names to the Coloring Bliss swatch charts so you don’t have to keep going back to the excel spreadsheet. I put my pencils in a zippered case so the tin isn’t a problem.

    Sometimes taking a purely scientific approach does not reveal the reality. The colors are really gorgeous and smooth and velvety on the page. They blend easily and there is a great variety. Some shades are not easily found in other sets. In shipping high end pencils also get broken. Prismacolors are much more likely to break when we use them. Many of us have fallen in love with these pencils and the quality they have when you actually color with them is amazing given their price.

      Well-said! I love the color pallet in these pencils because it is different than what I have in my Prismacolor Premiers , Castle Arts, or even my set of Crayolas. I’m a very new colorist and I’m not looking for high-end artist-grade pencils now. I’m retired, on a fixed budget. I want good budget quality and the Brutfuner square are my favorite set right now as I’m learning different techniques with wax or oil pencils. My hands are arthritic and sometimes they twitch when I least expect them to do so; therefore, I’m liable to break softer pencils. I also have the 520 set of Brutfuner round pencils - the barrels closely match the leads, and the color names are in English. I hope to match up my 520 Brutfuners with my other sets of pencils and my Brutfuner watercolor pencils. I’m trying to figure out which of Coloring Bliss’ swatch sheets would be best for side-by-side comparisons. Jennifer, what would you suggest?

    Interesting review. Another colourist contacted the manufacturing company and they said the word “oily” was a misnomer, a bad translation from Chinese. They are in fact a mix of wax and oil. Oily Pencils on the packaging was just supposed to mean “wax pencils” i.e not graphite pencils.
    Edit: the pencils do have names, they’re just not in English.

    • @ColoringBliss

      It would be fantastic if the company would share this information on their website or on their Amazon selling pages. I prefer to do my product research from the actual companies or from the sellers. I worry about passing on miss-information if I do product research from the wrong sources.

    • @ArtJourneyUK
      @ArtJourneyUK 3 роки тому +1

      @@ColoringBliss I think it would be difficult for them to post that the word oily was a misnomer on their website.
      Sure, providing information from other reviewers might provide wrong info but contacting the company prior to doing a review would eliminate any ambiguity or guesswork

    • @ColoringBliss
      @ColoringBliss  3 роки тому +6

      Again…it is my belief that the burden of providing product information is on the company. If the customer has to spend hours and days of researching, emailing, comparing and analyzing (I speak from experience unfortunately) just to vaguely understand a product, then there is a problem in the flow of information coming from the company to the consumer. I used to feel obligated to put that kind of effort Into my research until I realized a couple things… 1- the products often change so often that the research I was doing would become obsolete and a complete waste (Arteza is a good example) 2-the faster the companies learn that their consumers are intelligent and thrifty people who want as much accurate information about the products they are buying (so they can make good decisions), the better. If we insist on this level of service and flow of information from them, they will step up and deliver.

    • @ArtJourneyUK
      @ArtJourneyUK 3 роки тому +2

      @@ColoringBliss ...but you have to bear in mind you are reviewing cheap Chinese brands whose sole focus is to sell as many units as possible. They’re not going to supply pigment information or wax percentages; for the price they are selling, they don’t expect people to care.
      It’s a different story with brands that are selling for £100+ to artists because artists both expect and need that information for the price they are paying.
      Edit: ...and perhaps that’s the answer, if you want accurate product information and better service then perhaps we should stop buying cheap Chinese brands. It’s exactly the same as “fast fashion”; while there is a demand, the manufacturers will keep making them. And there will always be a demand from people who just like colouring in colouring books and don’t have $100s spare to spend on artist grade pencils.

    • @ColoringBliss
      @ColoringBliss  3 роки тому +2

      I am all too aware who these manufacturers are and that they are out to make a quick buck off the consumer. That is why I love comparing them to brands that care about the artist. A new colorist (hobbyist or blooming artist) deserves to know the difference between the pencils without having to spend hours of research. Misleading marketing used by cheap brands can lead to discouraged creative experiences that makes the artist feel that they are somehow “not talented” because they were told these pencils are “just as great as professional grade” when they are not. It is frustrating as a teacher. It is my job to set my students up for success and I can’t do that when manufacturers are literally lying to them to get their money. The best I can do is educate the consumer on the product differences and explain why the artist is probably feeling frustrated and what they can do to have a better experience. It is the eternal consumer battle played out in every market…quality versus quantity, bottom line versus customer care, etc, etc, etc.

    I love your hair!!! That color is beautiful! As for what I think about the Brutfuner squares, I love mine so much that I got a second set. I agree with the crumbs. They seem to kind of lean more toward waxy than oily but they also blend with my Polychromos pencils. I find that they blend beautifully with a blender pencil. I've used both the Prismacolor (which is, surprisingly, the better one) and Caran D'ache. Heck, if you don't want yours, I'll buy them from you. :D

    I've had these pencils for several months and absolutely love them. I haven't noticed any crumbs, but I know these are oily and therefore I don't use a heavy hand. I find these very comfortable in my hand as well. I've had no problem with sharpening and use the Dahl 133. I love how bright these pencils lay down and they color beautifully on Amazon prints paper on up to expensive, quality paper. The set also has some unique colors. I have all of the big, expensive brands of colored pencils (except Holbeins) and I reach for the square Brutfruners quite often and I highly recommend them.

      I've come back to eat some of my words about not noticing any crumbs...not true, not true. If I use them to color on Springhill 80lb vellum bristol card stock, they are a bit crumbly while using more pressure. I haven't noticed crumbs in any of my coloring "books"...yet.

    I got these a bit ago and i didnt have any breakage and there seems to be pencils missing but there aren't. It's just the way the pencils rolled or were put in the tray. If you have them all the same way they will each have their own slot. The " smell" that was with my set was just the smell of freshly sharpened pencils. Of course not the amazing smell of polys but still fresh. If you go onto Pamelas passion for pencils fb group there is a document where it has all the names translated into a swatch chart. The names were not translated by Pamela but someone else and I can't remember the name of her right now. It was super helpful. Some of the names are really lengthy so I just abbreviated them how I liked them and which made sense to me. I think for 120 pencils for $ 24 or so is a killer deal for these. Of course theyre not going to be perfect but I can say that Ive had prismas with worse centered cores and sight paint chips at the end of the pencils ( which ia quite sad because their " formula " is amazing but the actual wood of the pencils are just poor quality and to me seems to be getting worse with every set i get. Some reviews that I saw people were comparing these to polys and some other high end or mid grade oil pencils and I think that its not quite a true comparison due to the price range as you should be getting perfect pencils at a few hundred dollar 120 set of pencils. Just thought Id mention that when I swatch any pencils I first like to sharpen the outer layer of the core to get any material off of it thats put on there by the manufacturer to preserve it. I have found this can make or break my opinion on pencils. I actually really enjoy the square shape. I also readjust my pencils as im coloring and I like how comfortable the square shape is. But it's all subjective. In regards to them having some type water soluble I think many pencils are and we dont realize it until we go to use them and then it's too late and turns into a whoops.Anywho, hope you enjoy them as many other people have. Have a great night!

      Or the split wood; infact l have not had a perfect set of prismas. They have been split, the writing (or sharpening) have been the wrong way round., When you spend the amount that we have to on prisma it is actually a disappointment. No such disappointment with the square barrel.

    I love these pencils. But what really bothers me (as an Asian American) is that all reviewers keep saying "I wish there were color names on these". There are. Just because it is written in Chinese and not in English does not negate the fact that there are color names on them.

    “Brute fooner” is how I pronounce it, and I LOVE mine. They smell so good and work so well, more like wax.I also have the 520 set which I like. But the 180 Watercolor pencils are not worth the cost. They are not “movable” with a water brush or regular brush with water. It takes a lot of water, and a heavy amount of coloring. The 520 set are round, a different, lesser-quality of wood; and seem to color nearly as well as the 120 square. The square ones are my favorite.

      I also had to get the 520 set, FSS was impossible to resist. I’ve had the 120 square set for several months and I love them. So I had to get the 520, just had to do it.
      The 520 are comparable to the squares in the way they go down and layer. One box comes with the odd numbers and the other comes with the even numbers. There is a little number before the color name that is the correct number order. Once you sort the pencils back out numerically, you will see natural breaks for color shading and highlighting. It took me two weeks to sort and swatch them, but I’m so glad I took the time to do it!

    Thank you Jennifer, as usual this is a wonderful video. I really enjoyed my set of square Brutfuner 120 pencils. I use them in Bible journaling they’re soft, and blend quite well on the thin paper.

    I've had them for several months now, and I do love the colors, but I don't like the square shape for the same reasons as you, and to me they feel more waxy than I would like. Also, I don't have a crank and they are a nuisance to sharpen by hand , and it seems I'm always having to sharpen them. I'll continue to use them but won't be buying again with so many other budget sets out there. Always good to hear your views on products!

      As someone who has a few of the higher end pencils, I appreciate this particular type of comparison. It helps me to decide if it's worth spending the money. At this point, I need a wow factor before spending 20 bucks here and 30 bucks there on so called budget friendly supplies. Those purchases can nickel and dime your pocketbook to death, imo..

    I don't like the crumb issues with these pencils too! I noticed it immediately when I began swatching them. And the shape is a little weird at first, but once I got the hang of using them, it didn't bother me so much. Overall, I think these will do the trick and again, they are budget friendly too and they're ok.

    Curiously I had mines all sharpened already when I received them, due to my arthritis hands handicapped! I loved them dearly bc they are oily pencils and handy by its shape which make easy for my prehension! I am having 120 polychromos and I am using them with oil pastels and they are working very with the Burtfuner squares! They are vey easy to place them with theirs numbers when I am working with them with my swatching chart colours! But I won’t recommend them as the first colours pencils to have but just as complementary for my first layerings on big surfaces of colouring!
    Ps. I love your hair colours it’s fit well on you!

    I LOVE your swatch books! Steve is amazing and help put together a custom order for me. I was getting frustrated because I’m a little OCD about wanting my swatch book to be cohesive and consistent. I was wondering, do you have the option to print out the branded swatch charts you put together? I just follow your charts and write them in by hand but I was just curious if that’s something that can be ordered. Love you guys!!! Thank you!!!
    Will you be making a Tri tone book for these pencils? And I was also wondering if you’d ever be willing to show your watercolor pencil tri tone books completed? I’ve been curious on how you have them, how much is activated or if all.. I’m sorry! I don’t mean to be high maintenance. I’m just very trusting of your products and advice :) again, thank you for all the tools you release for us! It’s been amazing for me to have for reference and I love swatching lol so filling out the tri tone books are a lot of fun and educational :)

    I would be very interested to see if other colors bleed this way.. I quilt and a red or dark red(maroon) tends to do the most leaching of color and I wonder if you hit it with a vinegar based substance if it would prevent that leaching.. I use vinegar to retard fabric from doing the same.. but I would only do on a natural fiber paper like cotton! Just an idea!

    I just bought mine on sale for $18 (lightening deal on amazon, couldn't resist). I had been holding off as I have Starjoy and Markart, as well as Brut 160 round oily I have had for a while. Oh yes, and the 144 Black Widow series (which is due to have an addition in the fall ....lol... gonna have to get those). But, these are my fave budget oil based. I love the unique colors. My wax budget fav is the Black Widows (I do own full sets of Prisma, Poly, Caran Dache, and Derwent drawing and lightfast... but I reserve those for commission stuff). And...a whole bunch of Pastel pencil (high end lightfast). My idea on the budget pencils was to practice things I needed practice with (rather than use the expensive ones). And, for the most part ...it is working...lol
