I got 240 kalour from Amazon, and the only negative thing about them is the smell that won't go away. Before that, I got 50 metallic and 50 macaroon from Aliexpress without any manufacturer name, and they are exactly like kalour. So you are right. Chinese products have come a long way, and may become even better in the future. I also have 72 Arteza set, and a separate nameless skin tone set of 20, but even with all these, when I follow coloring videos as a beginner in adult coloring, I still see tones that I do not have. Thank you for your reviews, they are very useful and informative. ☺☺

Hi Jennifer, I was watching your video for kalour, I just wanted to answer some of your questions. I have the 300 and the 520 set. In the 520 you only have 220 new colors. Only 36 metallic are in the set. 11 fluorescent color. I love my kalour, they are smooth and I have not found any off center in the 520 set yet. The other pencils similar to the kalours is Shuttle Arts and Amazom Basics. The have some of the same colors.

Hi Jennifer and Steve. I have the H & B 120 pencil set, and I wanted a different set, so I ordered the Kalour 120 pencil set. I ordered both from Amazon. I just received the Kalour, and it is exactly the same colors, name and # on the pencil and the color chart as the H&B set I already have. I thought it would ve a totally different pencil set. I wanted to mention this to warn people about this.

I recently bought a reg Kalour 72 set bc I temporarily didn't have access to my Prismas & felt like coloring. I had already bought a 25 ct Amazon Basics set but felt those weren't enough colors for my needs. I'm happy w the Kalours. They feel a little "cheap" & the core isn't as thick as the AB's, but they're smoother & release the pigment better IMO. I paid $9.99 & they perform well for a dirt cheap pencil set. I really like the muted colors of the metallic ones (6 metallics came in the 72 set). I'll wait & see if I can snag them on sale. THANKS.

Hi! Well for those of us who, "just have to have them," I bought the 300 set and as an amateur, they seem okay to me. Didn't check for off sidedness but they color and that's all I wanted. Now if I could just finish the page I was coloring I'd have better insight. I'm sure I'm not alone.

The 240 set has 24 metallics, 12 fluorescents, and I’m assuming a few (maybe 12-24 pastels) mixed in with the non-pastels. Steve has a great point about the possibility of different manufacturers with the different sized sets!

I'm a polymer clay artist looking for a different, yet still art related hobby and thought coloring would be a good match. Well, my word - coloring is not the simple hobby I was expecting or looking for. I bought the set of 300 Kalour pencils. I like them well enough, although I've been so intimidated by all the coloring videos that I've seen online that I haven't done more than just color in the swatch card that came with the pencils. I have three of Johanna Basford's books, and I don't even know where to begin. There's choosing colors, and swatching, and shading - I almost wish I hadn't seen any videos because I really don't want to start this now that I have everything because what I color is probably more going to resemble what a 6-year old colors. Anyway, that's beside the point. What I wanted to say is that there are 24 metallic pencils in my set. I'm betting that probably all these colors are duplicates of what is in the metallic set you have, although the numbers are not the same. Same with the Macaron set. I saw the color Sakura on one of the pencils in your set, and that appears in my set as well, with a different number. I wish there was a name chart to compare. The colors in my set are gorgeous, but they are not in any sort of color order to make it easy to choose a light, medium and dark of any particular color. The one thing I noticed about the metallics is that the mica or whatever adds the sheen has a grayish, natural mica tone that stands out in lines on my swatches. That might just be the way I colored them, though. Thanks so much for all your product comparison videos!

Please don't give up on coloring ☺️
I agree with You about some things. I have a very hard time with color selection & getting started.
Johanna Basford is one of my all time favorite color book artists too.
I have found a dear sweet lady from England that is simple in her style so I am not over whelmed.
She is bery good at deciding her colors quickly & if I want to use that color, fine. If not, I choose what I think would be better 😉
Over all she makes things very easy to follow along, her coloring style is very simple yet has shadows & depth & shape.
I am learning SO much but it isn't like many ppl I have seen that color SO complicated there is Zero way I could ever do it!!
Her name is Rachel Henderson. Please check her out as she does lots of Johanna's stuff & a couple other artists I have really fallen in love with.
I think when color choice is no longer an issue & You see how truly easy it is... You will be hooked!!
She also does comparison swatch charts between many kinds of pencils to help You use whatever sets You habe to follow along though she is just becoming familiar with the Kalour but she has her 1st set & I may buy her more 🤔😎
Hang in there & Happy coloring!! 🤗😍

These sets are priced well; as for the lightfast rating, in their system, one star is the best lightfast rating; the more stars, the less lightfastness. I have had the 240 set for a year or so-I haven’t tested the lightfastness, but I found their pencils work well for me. Also, their colorless blender pencils (a separate purchase) seem to be comparable to the Prismacolor ones at a cheaper price point. Thanks for a great and comprehensive review (as always).

Thanks for a very helpful review---I have the Kalour Metallic and really love the intensity of it. BUT--several weeks ago, their Neon set arrived--and I am not a professional artist or 'colorist', but I was terribly disappointed with the lack of real 'neon' properties, particularly in the green and blue (admittedly, more difficult to get that 'neon' look. Maybe it was the paper in Rita Berman's book it didn't 'like'--I shall have to explore.) I bought it as an addition to my beloved Holbein neon colors, which are part of their full set. And the difference in just those few colors was amazing--those Holbeins really do spoil you for other colored pencils (except Prismas and Luminance, which I also love.) I have a Castle Macaron set, which is...well...okay. But, again, the beautiful selection of pastels in the Holbein set is just wonderful! Thanks so much for your excellent reviews! (I never pay attention to those words like 'expert', 'premier', artist-quality', etc.) In one year of coloring, I have acquired about 7 sets of colored pencils---excessive, I know. But you do get to appreciate those manufacturers who put so much work into producing a pencil that you love! I wanted to give all these brands a chance to 'prove themselves'! LOL!❤Lynn in NYC

I really like my Kalour 300 set. I purchased sets of 50 in the cardboard cylinder for gifts last year. I didn't open and use them, of course. The numbers on the product page for them matched the numbers on my 300 set. I've been really amazed by how well the Kalour pencils work on a lot of common coloring book papers. I haven't found one yet that they've been a complete failure on.
I'm getting so tired of bigger coloring channels talking down because budget brands having off center cores. The majority of my Prismacolor Premier are off center. Their cost was almost $100 a few years ago, when I purchased them. I didn't realize how bad it was, until after the return window closed. I don't live anywhere near an art supply store, so I have to rely on online orders for restocking. Nowadays here in the US, the full set has been running anywhere from $130 to $170 for the last year or so. In my opinion, that's ridiculous, given the quality control issues. Even if I didn't have a fixed income, I don't think I'd pay that much for them.
Someone made a comment that they think they like my coloring pages more, when I use the budget friendly pencils. That kind of surprised me. Unfortunately, I'll probably never see that person again. The conversation was interrupted, before I could ask for more input. I'm actually really curious what the response would have been... Lol

Hello Jennifer, thank you for the review.... i have the Kalour 72 set with the kingfisher drawing on it... they look different from what you have... the writing on them is different and they don't have the closed cap at the end...they are not super soft like the brutfuner that i have (the normal round one) and i had one that has a big split in the wood ( a bit broken) and few of them off centered and few of them when i sharpened them kept broke until they were short...so there is no quality control for sure...but i used them a lot to color in coloring books...they are OK for the price ( around 15 usd) but personally i prefer the brutfuner from the budget pencils...hope that help :) i remembered one thing that the number and color name on the pencils will be erased by time..

So if memory serves, I watched a tutorial about five or so years ago about the Macarons because I was looking to supplement my Polychromos and Prismacolor colored pencil full sets with some pastel colors.
I know, I know…blend the regular colors with white. Yada, yada, yada 😛😜🤪. I’ve done it and am currently working on a snowflake by using that technique with all the colors involved in it. But I have just WANTED them because they are soooooo pretty and, honestly, so that I didn’t have to spend so much time and put so much effort into coloring a page. Hahahahaha.
However, the problem people were running into with the Macarons is that, if they were blended and/or mixed on a page with Prismacolor (or was it Polychromos?), they had a strange chemical reaction and turned into a liquidy, oily gloppy mess. Apparently, they did great alone. But they didn’t play well with others…if I understood it correctly. It might be something to test out or do a search on with tutorials on UA-cam if you don’t mind my saying.
So I determined not to buy the Macarons but to acquire some Holbein pastel colors because they play really well with Prismas. Nevertheless, they are so expensive that it’s hard to justify…unless they are given to me as a gift. Come on, Christmases or birthdays🤣🤣🤣!

They are buttery soft, I daresay just about as soft as Prismacolor Premier. The pastels are bright and rich, and I have no words to describe the "amazing-ness" of the metallics. I have the 320(?) set. I rarely reach for them. They are scratchy and blend and layer poorly in my opinion. Everyone else seems to love them.

Does Kalour have any contact information on their packaging? I was wondering if you could email them and ask some questions about what they include in their pencil sets. Just a thought.

So I got the macarons, and I do like them. I also caved and got the Faber Castell mood colors. I’m still needing some more greens and I was hoping for more pastels in the moody set but there are lots of grays. I still need more pastels that show up. 🥰😍🩷💞👍👏💪

Where would someone pick up these “mood colors”? Are they included in the 120 set?

I hate to have off center pencils and when the lead breaks up 😢😩I bought two expensive sets and Almost cried when they were off centered..

I just finished swatching the 520 set, and I am highly highly dubious of the lightfast ratings. Many pencils were found to be absolute match duplicates in color, but to have different lightfast ratings in addition to different name and number. In general colors that generally are lightfast like some of the blacks are rated 5 * which is the worst rating, while sometimes very soft and I would think likely to fade colors like Creamsicle are rated 1 * for max lightfastness. We all know the least lightfast colors are pinks and purples but plenty of the pencils in that range were 3 * while pencils in more generally decent color ranges were almost all 4 or 5 *.
False lightfast ratings are worse than no lightfast ratings in my opinion! .... they are still awesome pencils tho...

I love the Kalour color pencils. I first bought a 120 set. No problems but I lost or misplaced 5 or 6. A year later I saw a set of 120 with a few accessories and a very nice organizer case with it. I hoped it was identical but it was not. Different colors or at least color names. But still great quality! I have not used them a lot but just wanted to let you know that. They are still good quality. & I wouldn't hesitate to buy more. Also, I heard a suggestion of heating color pencils that broke inside or were dropped. Put them on top of a heating pad or someplace they will be in direct contact with the heat. I did this with a small set of Prismacolors that were dropped and 1 or 2 broke. The heat did seem to help warm the lead & maybe it melded them back together? But they were fine, so it's worth a shot!☺️

Each set is different with different Kolor pencils and I absolutely love them and no they don't have matches in the Faber polychromes because I tried to replace pencils I used up you can only get those colors in those kolor sets that have that specific set!

I love there lay down and layering ability I also have the Brutfiner pencils and I love both of these, I have heard that both pencils are manufactured in the same place and have seen videos stating this oh and something must have happened to your metallic set at the factory because I have the same tin and none of my pencils are off centered and sharpen easier than my castle pencils, I am curious though if the box instead of tin of the kolor pastel pencils are the same set?

I have the 300 set. Of all the various brands I have (and I have many), they are probably the worst when it comes to breakage ... When it comes to pencils, I don't buy into the "you get what pay for". I buy a pencil. A pencil is not supposed to break. End of.
