    This has been without doubt the hardest review I have done with regards to time etc but an incredibly enjoyable one at the same time. With 520 Colored Pencils I just know that I have missed some information regarding the Brutfuner 520 Colored pencils, so if I have please by all means ask questions in the comments section or if you prefer you can email me directly on theartgearguide@gmail.com

    If lack of money wasn't an issue I'd buy these, just to make an art installation to hang on my wall! I love colour, and can easily differentiate different shades, which at times can be a curse. I don't NEED all them colours. However, do I want them, hell yes.

      I have to be honest, laid out in numerical order they make me cringe. I am one who sorts all my pencils into rainbow order (because is there anything more visually delicious than a big bright rainbow?) so this is just wrong to me 😂🌈

      I completely understand that Rowanne in fact when I collected all the COPIC Markers available of which their are 358 or there about a, I felt that having that many colors available made selecting colors for art really daunting.
      I absolutely think you can over complicate matters and as I mentioned in the Video, I’ve seen wonderful artists crest the most gorgeous works of art with only 12 pencils.

    I will not be the first to say these are TOO MANY pencils. And I won't be the last. Did I buy them? YES. I certainly like them well enough. I put them into 2 pencil cases (that hold 300 each). I am still attempting to determine a comfortable way to have these out when using. Do I have too many pencils? Of course. THANK YOU, Harry, for all you do.

      If you don't want them to be necessarily portable (I'm kind of a homebody, so not being travel-able is fine with me, but I do need to SEE them to select colors) -- I use these plastic stacking bins from Amazon that are separated into four sections. I put all my pencils in there from all brands, separated by color family, so I'm picking based on color vs. brand. Keeps them organized and accessible. :)
      (The organizer things I use are the Deflecto Stackable Cube Organizers with Cross Dividers. Had to go look it up to remember that, but they're still on Amazon in the US. Set them on their side, fill the triangles with pencils, and Bob's your uncle. :D)

    Those swatches, NOOO! The largest set I own is 72, and I have not even managed to force myself to swatch those in a semi-nice fashion. 520 is absolutely insane. I saw this set on Lindsay's channel about a week ago and just looking at all those pencils made me uncomfortable, lol. I could not see myself ever getting a set this size. 48 are a perfect number to me, 72 is total luxury, anything larger would just mess me up. I could see this set being a nice idea for people who like to color though, I think they would probably like having all those colors ready. Maybe it's also a nice idea for beginners, being able to just focus on having fun and getting to know the medium without having to worry about mixing too much. Not being able to replace individual pencils is not so great, but since there are many very similar colors in those two sets, I think that one could in many cases replace one with the other.
    Not really a set for my needs, I have my brands that I love and will stick with, but I can defnitely see that there are a few people out there whom this set would be perfect for.

      The 2 largest sets I have are Prismas (150) & Black Widow (180ish). What set I use just depends on my mood & what I’m working on. Or if there’s a specific color combination I want & those shades are only in a certain set. I’ve gotten spoiled by the big sets, so now I get annoyed if I’m using a 72 & can’t get enough color variation. 🤣🤣

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype Рік тому +3

      @@ericapickering8101 I guess it's really a matter of what you are used to and how you like to work. I bought the 120 set of square Brutfuners a while ago, because everyone talked so highly of them, and that's the largest set I have ever owned so far. I can see why some people would like it, there is something to be said for having so many colors right at hand, but personally, I still feel way more comfortably with my smaller sets. It probably has a lot to do with how one learns to draw, what size set one has grown used to. When I use this 120 set I tend to just pick out a bunch of colors before I start to work, and then I just pretend that it's a smaller set this way. 😁

    Dear Harry, what a huge job doing that review must have been. Well done you did a great job, I want to hate them, I really don't need 520 pencils and my credit card is already conspiring with my debit card to have me murdered but I can see why people want them. If I bought them I would glue them into their trays and attach them to the wall to display all their rainbowy glory. Sort of a tribute to my folly! They look so pretty.Anyway thanks for reviewing them, I hope things get better for your daughter, stay well Annette

  • @ajwspjs2
    @ajwspjs2 3 роки тому +11

    That was quite good and obviously you spent a lot of time preparing. I loved it because it gave me a better idea of if I want to purchase them or not. I have the 120 square Brutfuners and they are pretty good. I would agree they are closer to prismas than not. I gave up on prismas years ago because they were so frustrating to work with but recently got another 150 set when it went on sale for $75 and surprisingly less than a 6th of the pencils were wonky whereas in my first set, three quarters were off-centered, so prisma is definitely beginning to up their game because none of them broke when I swatched them and only two looked like I will have to sharpen with a craft knife. I laughed at your reasoning for getting them; that will be the same reason I use when I get around to ordering them. As far as similar colors are concerned...I saw the slight differences in the swatches you provided and while it may not mean a lot to some...for those doing detailed work, those slight variances help. As far as lightfastness...prismas are not lightfast either but are a joy to work with when they're not busy breaking and these fall into that category. I do have the Caran D'Ache Luminance, and the Polychromos, but I don't play with them like I do budget friendly sets. Thanks for taking all that time to show us your swatches and tests. I know you were going to do all that anyway...because that's what I do when I get pencils, but it's great that you shared and did all that work FOR me, because...yeah...I'll be getting them soon...lol. Thanks again!

    The colors look like my 24 count Koi watercolor chart after I did the blending grid. Of course, 24 x 24 is 576, but when I saw them in number order, it was the first thing I thought of. Your dilligence in going through all these is soooo appreciated. Just thinking of going through them all exhausts me. For that they are suberb. They do resemble more a wax based pencil, but they do not smear. That is what I dislike about the Prismas. I,ve read the colors are in a pantone system? I used a magnifying desk lamp to see them. Oh..the odd-numbered pencils are in one box and the evens are in the other.
    They do have a softer lead than many oil based pencils. I think the laydown is a lot like the square 120 set.
    I like the trays. It's handy to tilt a tray and read the names and numbers. What helped me a lot was to turn every pencil around so all the names are face up.
    I store them in 2 300-pencil cases which works out great.
    It's a ridiculous set of pencils but they are a lot of fun.

    A side note: I suspect the reason why most companies across China would claim their color pencil as “oil based” is due to the fact that in Chinese, more often than not, color pencil is classified as either “oil based” or “water soluble”. As such, “oil based color pencil” in Chinese actually just mean “color pencil”.

    Intensive review! Brow sweating review, how could it not be with 520 colour pencils! Absolutely too many coloured pencils for just about every reason imaginable. The amount of work you had to do to produce the review shows there are overwhelmingly too many. Swatching these pencils alone scares me. You truly reviewed them every which way you possibly can. I honestly believe that for beginners 48 pencils is enough to find out if you enjoy coloured pencils, and to get to know your pencils. Yes I have various brands, too many, that I have forced myself not to buy anymore. However, beginner, intermediary or professional, I really don't believe these pencils, based on the number alone, that anyone really needs. If they come in smaller sets I would recommend them, based on your review, that people give them a try. Thanks for the review and the time you put into creating it. Hope you and your family are well.

    Thank you, Harry for this review. I have been waiting for your review on these, as I want to know how you would catagorise the colours and your opinion. Bought mine during the recent AE Summer Sale, July 3rd and received them today, July 14, Singapore. I am not an artist or colorist. You did so much work Harry and thank you for doing that for your subscribers. Just a note your link to Australia has a shipping cost. I found a much cheaper store with no shipping. It’s called Yover store. They came out to AUD212.47 after coupon discounts.
    While I have not decided yet to purchase them and would only do so because I’m an obsessive pencil collector not because I need 520 pencils I hope this store is not a rip off considering price and free shipping.
    Best wishes to you Harry and hope your health allows you to find some peace with your wonderful artistry and channel.🙏🌹

    Not sure if you will mention this further in the review but just in case you don't think of it you could use a silver paint pen to go into the indentation where the number is stamped. If you can't see the number very well you can wipe the paint from the top of the pencils - BEFORE it dries - leaving it remaining in the little dents and revealing the number. From then on they will be much easier to use too because you'll be able to jot down the numbers of colours you used when having to break from your work now that they are silver and visible like the name (and the numbers are much shorter than the names! 😂)
    Hope this tip helps!

    I got these pencils a couple weeks ago. I like them, so much so I ordered a second set to serve as replacements since they’re not available open stock. They are very similar to the Hero & GuangHui sete I got a few years ago. I think they’re actually the same pencils just under different names. They act the same when I use them. Anyway thanks for this video, the only other one I could find on the 520 set is in French, which I don’t speak or understand. Since they’re so popular now it’ll be interesting to see how long it take to get to me, if at all. I got them through Aliexpress.

      I am not questioning your review but was surprised regarding Hero CP. I bought a set of Hero CP several years ago on ebay, couldn't afford polychromos. They are some of the worst CPs. Hard and very weak in pigment. Pure waste of my money. Hardly ever use them, too hard on my hand.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 роки тому

      Hi Haley, I know you are not questioning my review but please know it is absolutely fine for you or anyone else to question what I have said in a review. I don’t know everything about Colored pencils and the companies that make them, I have a long way to go before I reach that level and even if I ever do, there is always something new to learn.
      I actually learn so much from you guys asking questions or pointing out mistakes I’ve perhaps made.
      I know there are a lot of artists out there who follow this channel and they have issues with their hands and so need a softer more pigmented pencil. With this set of 520, I would say the core is soft enough and well pigmented for the price, but what I would say is buy an electric sharpener or hand crank which ever is easier on your hands.

      @@TheArtGearGuide Thanks for your response. As stated before, I couldn't afford polychromos but needed oil based CP because they work well with watercolor. Until last Christmas I used, although I hated them, Hero CPs, supplemented with Marco CP. Last Christmas a member of this family got an Amazon gift card. Not wanting to waste it I decided to buy oil based CP sets. I got the 48 GreyArt and 72 Brutfuner set. I was absolutely blown away on how much the quality of generic oil based CPs had improved. Absolutely love my GreyArt, which I upgraded to 120. Haven't worked too much with my Brutfuners yet and therefore can't tell how well they will work with watercolor. By the way, I also love my Marco CPs which work beautifully with watercolor.

    I have these 2 sets and the amount of space needed to lay out all the trays for just playing is space that I don't have. I don't do Coloured Pencil work specifically as a professional endeavour. I love to "play" with them to create abstract drawings that are more intuitive than planned so I like having access to all colour choices at any given time.

    THANK YOU for soooo much work... I swatch a lot myself and I also got a blister on my finger from sharpening, so I know the effort :-D also this review helped me with my decision to buy them or not for currently about 100€ on Amazon... (hint: I definitely will..)..
    I felt understood about, I don't need those but I might want xD... for drawing I personally prefer the luminance only because it's a joy to work with them, they forgive mistakes and it's so much faster.. BUT.. I only use those for professional things, where really every stroke has to be on spot...
    with the brutfuner (I already have the square ones) I was looking for something very cheap my kids can use with me, where I don't have to worry or think about a color or plan the mixing, etc.. just grab whatever I see for something mindless, relaxing like coloring books or intuitive drawing.. :)

      So far Brutfuner has no watercolor pencils. I'm in China and I have contacted Brutfuner online store. I have this set… I do not think the number is the reference for the brand. It is the alphanumerical code near the end of the pencil. You have the Y for yellow, G for green, K for black, V for violet, and even mixed like YK. These define the color, as well as the name. The hardly visible number is the a sequence rank for the set.

    Although much variety in shades of colors, it looks like so many in each color category are so close in color. I'm thinking with 520 pencils the manufacturers can only do so much in variations , thus the vast similarities in colors.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah Sonia you are absolutely right which is why I made a point of saying as a Colored pencil artist you absolutely do not need 520 colors and others asked me questions before I done the review, one question was do you need to buy both sets and again, both sets of 260 are so similar. I mentioned in both the written and video review that it is in no way necessary to buy both sets as one of the sets would still be a huge number of pencils and huge selection of colors. Thank you so very much for your wonderful comment and for your support thank you so much

    Are the color cores centered? That was my main issue with prisma. The breaking when you sharpen them by hand.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 роки тому +1

      I can’t say with 100% certainty that all 520 are centred but I certainly didn’t experience any of the problems that I had with the Prismacolor. Before I start my tests and swatch etc I sharpen every single pencil because when pencils are shipped, they have a very thin layer of wax sprayed on the core to protect it, or something like that, so I sharpen before I do anything. I think I only experienced one or two pencils from the full 520 range that broke a few times but other than that, all the rest were fine.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Taylor. You are absolutely right, with these pencils there is no way anyone needs 520 pencils, but I have really enjoyed using them. Thing is, at the minute I am doing a drawing with markers for the company that own the markers. But when I was adding the detail, I had been using my Prismacolor 150 set to add the detail because they are excellent for adding on top of marker and their palette is also extensive. However, on this occasion, instead of just settling for a Color that was close to the reference image, I was able to use pencils from the 520 range and pretty much match the reference image exactly.
      I’m not saying in any way shape or form that the 520 set of pencils are better than Prismacolor, I have to add that as I know there are people who will metaphorically rip me apart if I don’t choose my word correctly 🤣🤣, it’s just the palette is so extensive from the 520 set that Color selection is excellent. Thank you so much for your comment and support I really and truly appreciate it, thank you.
