If all my professors sounded and looked like Gareth, I would have paid WAY more attention, and would not have to be Googling this. Honestly this guy just explains things way better.
i believe, that for the editing's sake it's worth mentioning that one can also: *) duplicate a layer with edit/duplicate or ctrl+d (this one is über useful), *) split it into two at the current time with edit/split_layer or ctrl+shift+d (might be useful), *) cut out its middle part (by doing the spliting twice at different times and removing the middle part) *) roll it (leave its length and position in the composition timeline be, but shift its content forward or backward in its own time): for this one i don't know any short answer, but to double click it to open it as a footage and then drag its in-out rectangle (the portion of it, that we actually use) on the footage timeline (this one might be particularily useful in the example that you gave, where we stitch many clips together, and we might not like their interaction initially).
For those of you who are using a german keyboard setting on Windows, these are the key combinations you'll need: Trim End / Start of Layer : Alt - Ö || Alt - Ä Move Layer up / down : Strg - Ö || Strg -
Very nice for noobs, Although for me it's intuitive and doesn't need a tutorial to figure such easy stuff. But I love the way you present it from start to finish, this will boost learning process and elminate the steep learning curve for newcomers and will also not scare them away from using after effect since you were very eloquent on the presentation.
Really appreciate your efforts you put into making another great course. I would like to see Adobe Premiere course in the future. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Hi Gareth, I'm trying to pick up After Effects myself, and I can say that your training video is by far the best in terms of details and quality. keep it up and thanks for sharing!
You dropped this 👑 In all seriousness, I have attempted to learn animation and After Effects multiple times, and this is the most detailed and digestable course. Thanks, Gareth!
Wow. Thank you so much for creating this channel. I've wanted to learn how to really use Adobe suit for a long time. I've dabbled (if that) since high school... a couple decades ago... but I never got far because due to various reason but mostly just hard to find teachers. I was just about to pay for classes to get help but I came across your video on Google. It's like it's both detailed but but concise. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you. Great tutorial! Although i have to say this part was frustrating using a Norwegian Mac keyboard, i simply could not find the correct shortcuts for trimming the start and end of a clip. Very little help online too. But other than that, awesome stuff!
You have to switch your language to EN (USA) and use two keys on the right of "P" letter. In my case, I just bought an English Bluetooth keyboard, it's the easiest way. (I had a French one)
Thank you for your amazing tutorials. I've a query regarding your comment at 0:49 (AE vs PR). What should a typical flow in preparing a video ? For example, lets say we need to make a slideshow that involves transitions, overlays etc. -- So does one pre-think the entire flow and work on individual clips in PR > then build comp(s) in AE and render them > Finally stitching them all together in PR again ? OR -- Does one pre-think the entire flow and work on individual clips in PR > then build comp(s) in AE and (pre)render/compose them > Then build master comp in AE And render the final video ?
Hi @GarethDavidStudio, I've just started this course, and so far it is very useful. Thanks a lot, and I will definitely continue watching. Today I had some issues with keyboard shortcuts, so I was not able to follow the course properly. The shortcuts for Trim In and Trim Out with [ ] are not working for me, and I also could not find the Trim button anywhere in the program. Nevertheless, I understand the logic behind it. For video editing, I will mostly use PP, not AE. If you have any ideas why these shortcuts are not working, please share them. Keep up the good work 😉
Gareth, thanks for your videos. I've been using After Effects for quite a while but have never had a structured course. Your playlist helps me fill the gaps that I've missed out while just 'diving in', haha. I've got a quick question, say you want to do a video that's synced to the music beat with time ramps and such, would you use Premiere Pro or After Effects? I was previously using Vegas Pro for that stuff but been moving to the realm of Adobe. I know you can kind of get it done both ways but which one would you suggest? Thanks.
Hey Gareth! Excellent tutorial. Much easier than other tutorial videos. The best one to learn after effects. I have one question in my mind. How to un-trim the video clip? We have seen how to trim the video clip, if in case we would want to un-trim and edit the same video again. Please guide me. Thanks. :)
Great vid - would have loved to have known the bit about double clicking on the layer earlier on in the video though! 😂 Just got to that bit after an hour of trying to figure out what I'd done wrong 😂. For anyone else who's an idiot like me - if your video clip opens up in a strange window in the composition panel, its opened in a new tab - just click the original tab to get back at the top of the comp panel!
It's good to know for those that follow from another country that some of the short-cuts may not work for you, because you have an other keyboard. I'm from sweden and it does not work for me on my swedish keyboard, so I have to look for a short-cut-list somewhere XD. It took a while for me to figure out why the short-cuts did not work.

Thats's right. Premiere Pro is great for cutting large amounts of video footage fast and effectively. From premiere pro you can export your edited video clips and bring them into After Effects where you can add lots of bespoke sound, visual and transition effects. AE is great for video presentations, I do all my work in AE.

I'd like to know if those parts have a name and how to get rid of them because they mess up my keyframes when I try to enable time remapping for instance.. I know no other way to trim the whole layer down to the actually useful part other than making a new composition out of it and trimming the duration down to the used area, and even then, if I enable time remapping it extends the last frame of the video all the way to the end of the timeline. I was wondering if you knew a correct or easier way to do this. I'm not really a stranger to video editing, I've used Sony Vegas a few years but AE seems to work quite differently in some areas like this one.
