Aww thank you! We were there for almost two weeks, the day we had intended on going down the locks was the day the canal initially froze over! But what a beautiful place to be frozen in, everything we needed and more, with such stunning scenery! Martin is feeling much better now too, thank you! xx

Yes, we really felt for those hire boaters, they didn’t get much of a holiday, stuck at the top of the locks for three days and then having to calve through the ice as the hire company were pressuring them to get the boat back, bless them. Mind you, that last boat, I didn’t say this on film, but they moored it up and walked the three miles back to the boatyard and gave them the keys and told them to go and get their own boat! Didn’t blame them, they said they weren’t prepared to risk damaging other people’s boats, especially the GRP behind us. Loved the ice though, feeding the birds outside the window, just priceless! Thanks! xx

hi Julie and Martin. Another enjoyable video but i did feel for you with all the ice around. Glad you could get water and groceries though. The hire boat companies should be a bit more lenient with the boat hirers when there is ice around knowing its difficult moving a boat in ice. There are some lovely bridges on the canals you travel on. Looking forwards to your next video bye for now.xx
Hi Joan, lovely to hear from you! Aww thank you, we were fine, in fact very lucky to have been frozen in at Foxton, it had so much to offer! Know what you mean re the hire companies, they were putting pressure on the hirers to get the boats back, really not good. Luckily the holidaymakers waited until the ice had gone, as they didn’t want to damage other people’s boats! You’re right, some of the bridges and structures on the canals are just amazing, especially when you think of all the primitive means of construction, where everything was manually built, it really blows your mind! Thank you so much! xx
Hi Eric, no thankfully we had no damage, and the boats gave up due to the ice being too thick. If you notice, the ice around our boat didn’t move, it wasn’t affected as it was so thick! Thank you so much! xx
I loved the weird sounds the ice made when Martin threw the chunks out onto the frozen canal surface! It was like a combination of chirping and sci-fi lasers - so cool! I couldn't believe the thickness of the ice when the poor hire-boaters tried to make a go of it. I said the same thing just moments before you did, Julie, about there being no blacking left on that hull if they kept at it. Two hooters for Martin? I'm trying very hard not to make a naughty joke. The look on his face there at the end of your vid says it all! 🤣😇
Hi Chris, yes the ice sounded quite eerie at times, it was beautiful though and we loved feeding the birds on the ice! We did feel for the hire-boaters, not much of a holiday break for them really. Lol, yes that look at the end, like butter wouldn’t melt 😂😂🤣 Thanks Chris xx
The hire boaters should have stayed put! Even the hire company should understand that. The boat would have been damaged and all those around them. My Husband would have loved those horns lol. Mine makes you jump when sounded, the Builder said it was a bit loud 🤣
Hi Wendy! Yes, we agree, but unfortunately it was the hire companies that were putting the pressure on for them to move! I didn’t say it on the video, but the last boat ended up locking the boat up and walking the 3 miles or so back to the boatyard and told them to go and get their boat themselves as he wasn’t prepared to damage other people’s boats! Good on him, and would you believe, the hire company didn’t come and get the boat until a couple of days after the ice had gone lol 😜 Haha re the horns, yes they are rather loud, going to be interesting that’s for sure! 🤣 Thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB well done the hire boaters, good for them. There is pressure on them, we hired on 3 occasions and to be back so early on the last day is too much, especially as their idea of preparing for the next boaters is a farce! Just after the first lockdown we hired and did the Llangollen (August and we virtually had the canal to ourselves). It took my Daughter and I 3 hours to clean the boat to our satisfaction. We found a grape and dirt in one drawer, socks in another and all around the windows was black muck. All the money it costs for a week and you really only get 6 full days!

Best thing on Thursday evening is your video. That ice looks absolutely tremendous however it looked a very nice spot to get frozen in. Today here has been terrible, we have had snow, sleet, rain and freezing winds, it’s been horrible. Two horns, that’s going to be interesting! Martin, hope you are feeling much better and back to full strength soon, unfortunately it’s that time of year and it’s so easy to get a cold wishing you a full recovery soon
Hi Edward, that’s a lovely thing to say, thank you! We’ve had a very wet and windy day here too, it’s awful isn’t it! Thank you, Martin’s feeling much better now and yes, two horns is going to be very interesting! 😜 Thank you! xx
What a beautiful place. I just love the aerials and I hadn't heard of the incline before. It's a shame it isn't there anymore, but expense probably means it will never be put back into commission. Lugging all that water had to be a hard job. Even if you used a trolley it would be heavy and hard to pull. Either way, not fun. Martin didn't really promise to not startle you so be prepared!
Hi Dorothy, Foxton really is beautiful, we were very lucky to have been ‘stuck’ there, when the canal froze over we thought it was only going to be a day or so, but it was over a week, so we were really lucky to be in such a nice position, water, shop, pub and lovely scenery, we couldn’t wish for anything more. Lol, re the hooters, no he didn’t did he, that look at the en, like butter wouldn’t melt 😂🤣 Thanks Dorothy xx
With all the modern technology we have now what would a decent reverse osmosis system cost for a narrow boat. I used to operate a system that could take brackish water into distilled water which would be overkill for your needs. The biggest issue would be the cost and maintenance but it could be a lifesaver in a dire emergency. Just an idea 😊.
There are water filtration systems out there, they are very expensive, we have friends that have it, but even then they would not drink it and use it for washing etc. Canal water is very polluted, from years of use, thick silt at the bottom, so not a nice thought lol. We have a 680 litre tank, so can make it last 2 weeks if necessary. Thanks Norman xx
Hi Sharon, the answer is yes! Generally boats don’t move in the ice, as it takes the blacking off that protects the hull from rust. We have two-pack epoxy protection which is a bit more hardy, but we wouldn’t move in the ice. Apart from possibly damaging your own boat, you can damage other people’s, especially the GRP Cruisers, being fibreglass the ice can literally go through their hulls and sink them! We had a GRP moored behind us, so we were really worried that the hire-boaters were going to carry on. All the boaters came out and they decided to wait until the ice had gone thankfully. 😅 Lol, ‘the best view on the canal’ is feeling a lot better now, thanks Sharon! 🥰xx
D’you know what, when we watched it on the TV with the sound right up, I said to Martin ‘what did he say?!’ I’ll have to replay it again, didn’t hear it when I was editing, nothing I can do now though lol 😂 Thanks Wayne! xx
Definitely Debbie! There wasn’t a lot of blacking left by the time they’d finished, but they were getting pressure from the hire company to get the boat back, we really did feel for them. Thanks Debbie xx
@@sonbob7745Mostly it gently rocks us to sleep, however, when there’s ice and wind, it bashes the boat against the ice making loud bangs which kept waking us up! When it rains hard, it definitely sends us to sleep lol xx
Hire boat should not be allowed to move with such thick ice regardless when I use to hire boats it was impossible to hire boats from October to April maybe company’s just don’t care about there boats anymore 😠
Yes, we agree, we really felt for them. They were under pressure from the hire companies to get the boats back! They didn’t get to do hardly any cruising, just a couple of miles, then sat at the locks for a few days before breaking the ice to get the boats back to base! So glad they didn’t persevere though, as the poor man in the GRP cruiser was really worried. Thanks Diane! xx
Boutique narrowboat is a very responsible company. We took Marbled White out in Feb 2023 and Chalkhill blue in November. No way would we take her into ice like that. The company is always available and we would have just rung them for help and advice. I could have cried when I saw what they were doing to her. She is such a beautiful boat.
@@maggierose5820 yes, the boat certainly looked a lovely boat and well looked after. The hirers were lovely people and were only moving so they could get the boat back on time. No-one knew it was going to stay that icy for so long, it was a shame. We saw the same boat a few days later when the ice had gone with new people onboard, so all was ok in the end xx

Hi, thank you so much, so pleased you’re enjoying our videos! Yes it is cold, but nice and warm and cozy in the boat! Thanks! xx
Well here in Plymouth , we did not get the ice so bad , not that i can remember that is.
Thankfully we didn’t have it for too long xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Definitely a great place to be stuck!
I wonder if going through thick ice can damage your boat hope the best view on the canal is feeling better xx
Lol, ‘the best view on the canal’ is feeling a lot better now, thanks Sharon! 🥰xx
That is a lot of locks there . Can you stop part way up as it will be hard work to get to the top.?
Hi John, no you can’t stop, but it only takes 45 minutes to do all 10! Thanks John xx
Can you salt the canal just by you boat, or would it not help at all ?
Ooh no, you can’t do that, it’s not permitted and not sure how it would affect the wildlife too xx
Some people never learn its not their boat 😢😢😢😢
We couldn’t believe it Zona, they were so determined! The sound of the ice crushing was so loud! xx
Loved it. At 5mins 53secs does a bloke say - looks like a condom ? 😂
D’you know what, when we watched it on the TV with the sound right up, I said to Martin ‘what did he say?!’ I’ll have to replay it again, didn’t hear it when I was editing, nothing I can do now though lol 😂 Thanks Wayne! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB was Amanda who spotted it with her bat hearing. 😂
@@nbspudley 😂😂🤣
Xx
Thanks Edward! xx
Good for re blacking
Definitely Debbie! There wasn’t a lot of blacking left by the time they’d finished, but they were getting pressure from the hire company to get the boat back, we really did feel for them. Thanks Debbie xx
Julie does the wind rock you to sleep or keep you awake bob
@@sonbob7745Mostly it gently rocks us to sleep, however, when there’s ice and wind, it bashes the boat against the ice making loud bangs which kept waking us up! When it rains hard, it definitely sends us to sleep lol xx
Dam now you said that i got to stop you and go and pee now. Back now .
😂😂😃
