This video makes all the difference; thank you! This is my first time with a 3D scanner, and I was thinking you were supposed to try to get everything in one or two gos of the same view. The explanation of doing different scan projects and aligning the results to make a final output is eminently helpful!

Wow! This scanner has some slick software and seems really user friendly. Great video! The section on scanning the front of the Mini and how the scanner can even find dents you don't know about would make for phenomenal short form content. Awesome work.
Final thoughts for Einstar. They need a macro mode or some such for close up shots of details. Would also be nice if they put the buttons on the side of the scanner so it's already where your hand wants to grip. Pushing on the back seems a bit awkward. Still looks like a great product overall.
Yeah the ergonomics let the product down, but people are 3D printing handles already so that side might be fixed…

Love the video, sir. I've got one coming in towards the middle of the week and was getting pretty worried about my laptop. I saw your comparison video between the 4 scanners first and you'd pointed out that you really needed a stronger machine for this scanner over the others and when I looked up the specs and saw that 11th gen chip in the recommended specs I was despairing about my laptop. It's not new, but I hadn't even though about the laptop. Now that I've seen the specs that your desktop has, I'm feeling a bit better. My laptop is running an 8th gen i7 with 32GB of RAM and a 2070 super, so I think it should at least be functional.
Again, thanks for the video and the really digging in on it.
Finally some real-world use cases for this thing! I actually discovered your channel yesterday while searching for any decent review of the EinStar; what a fortuitous coincidence.

This guy does premium videos. You should definitely check his other videos out if you like motorsports and 3dmodeling/printing. One of the only channels I've ever cared to subscribe to
dont want to toot my own horn or simp too much, but i have been using a professional grade scanner for years and.... this is the first video i have ever seem where someone TRULY goes into the details of what it is like to 3D scan something, warts and all. I bet a lot of people would criticise this unit for how un-slick it seems compared to other devices, but a lot of the time those devices are not telling the truth about the process. the device seems capable, and so does the software. 10/10 review and overview.

I just swapped my CR Scan 01 for the Einstar and am absolutely loving it. It's so much faster than the creality scanners. I feel like the package is much nicer too. Cabling seems better with one connecting to the unit with a locking feature, I really like the silicone case, the whole thing feels much more "premium" than creality.
It does make the others seem like toys, but you’ll see from the shoot out, the Einstar isn’t the best at everything!
This einstar just kill all scanner 3D around 800-1000 dollars. I have one and I also love !!!

So, I broke down and bought one of these; abandoning the XBox concept. Yeah; It's badass. going to be using it to scan my kid's VW MK2 GTI, along with a rear wheel arch (non-rotten) from the wrecking yard so that I can properly jig/place the replacement fuel-filler-neck-bracket back into his car. Now I'm scanning absolutely EVERY car part I have and this is fully part of my workflow now.
How have you been liking it? I think I'm about to buy one of these. They still seem to be the best product for the price a year later.
Really neat scanner, unfortunately i have recently purchased the Revo point pop 2 (so, i'm not in the market to buy today), but i can see that this scanner is WAY ahead of the pop 2's capability. I will definitely consider this scanner for a future purchase.

Loved this review! Have you ever tried using the Einstar on one of your bicycles? Very curious on how well it handles all the cavities/crevices and the shiny surfaces

Yeah, I have had to upgrade my (admittedly cheapo eBay Frankenstein) PC which was okay for modelling and editing to get near this scanner….
And the Lizard I still rate, unfortunately I don’t think it’s an either/or, it might be both?? But the comparison video will clear that up…

Definitely waiting on the comparison. I have a pop 2 that I've had reasonable success with. Trying to scan large parts is a tiring process though. Also having to cover everything in chalk spray isn't ideal.
Looks like the Revo might be the go for small mechanical parts and the einscan is be best for scanning larger parts like the engine bay and body panels.
I've got a decent workshop with lathe, mill, mig, tig and 3d printer etc and still find it's often best to just cardboard template or make crude jigs for most large parts.
Sadly it seems that often the traditional boring way of measuring and making parts is far more efficient than trying to digitise absolutely everything.
If you are dealing with something 2D and straight lines, cardboard is often the best way, definitely quickest but not sexy.
I am working up the comparison now, but it’ll be a few more days!

Hi David. Love your channel. So helpful. I’m looking at making some carbon bits and I’m interested in your opinion. Would you say the Einstar provides sufficient accuracy for scanning bumpers to reverse engineer and design a splitter, for example. Any info would be great. Thank you!

Great review, very nice to see a real world part being scanned. I have an Einscan-SP and I love the software. It look a bit childish with big buttons and guiding you through the process a lot but it does a great job and it is truly a professional piece of software that is very easy to use.
I don't need a larger format scanner today but I still remember how I was struggling with my first customer scan when my first scanner arrived. It seems like a good idea to buy one to be prepared for what is coming 😁
On of things I want to use this for is to scan bicycle frames that we make. The quality of the scans is (should be) good enough to validate if the frame is within spec but mainly to store a 3D model of each frame built for future reference (especially in case of a warranty issue when it is out of alignment).
Regarding the system requirements: The order of video card, system RAM and CPU is indeed the order in which they need to be selected. Both the processor and the RAM on the video card are used for analyzing scan data and producing the point cloud (viewing and rotating the point cloud is just a small percentage of the power used). If your video card is too slow, the scanner will keep loosing alignment when moving around. Do go for at least 32 GB of system RAM, not less. Even though the system may run with 16 GB, you will hit memory limits when scanning larger models. Finally, the CPU needs to be able to move all that data around but this is more of a bottleneck during post processing than during scanning.
I would not recommend any laptops for scanning, even if they do have a good video card, fast CPU and lots of memory. The problem with a laptop is cooling; as soon as you are post processing, the CPU load is heating up the processor and since a laptop is not that good at getting the heat out, the CPU is being throttled down.
Yeah, I don’t know if a small form factor PC with a “van-life” style battery power unit would be the best option…
@@MakingforMotorsport I got mine yesterday and did some test scans. I tried to look at the performance of the system while scanning but that is almost impossible.
I should actually make a video of the scanning process to record what is happening with CPU, GPU and memory while scanning and meshing. I do have a fairly fast system (AMD Ryzen7 5800x @ 3800 MHz, 64 GB, GTX1060 with 6 GB and a Samsung 980 Pro SSD but there are some moments where I was wondering if it was still working ...
I'd say that those small form factor PCs are more or less designed for office/desktop application and they will throttle down when more power is used (and thus more heat) to prevent overheating.
@@Rob_65 I am just trying to avoid flopping down £2,000 on a laptop, which I know I will need to duplicate with a desktop aswell…🤷♂️

Hi, I have been playing around with a Revopoint Mini that I have access to and able to get some decent results on small items. Similar to you I am more interested in automotive applications so this looks interesting for larger components. One thing I am definitely compromised with is laptop power. As its xmas I might just treat myself but not really sure on spec. I'd be interested in what you'd be looking for in a cad / scanning laptop spec wise....? Nice informative channel - I've been solidworks user for 20 years and now getting more into Fusion 360 so finding your Fusion stuff very useful also. Cheers

Looks good thanks for showing. Pc only though would make it a super expensive purchase though as I’d need a new PC. I got the Scan Lizard and it’s been incredible after some initial frustrations with the software which was due to the poor terminology/English translation. Big advantage of the Einscan is that it knows object position so scans will be correctly oriented when you bring it into Meshmixer, fusion etc. you can do that with scans with the Creality but they won’t be as accurately positioned as something done with Einscan.

Very interesting a scanner that for me would be ideal as i will need to scan my datson project to make some custom body work and with the advances in 3d printing machines this paired will be a great bit of kit.
I reckon the Einstar is a perfect piece of kit for that application… I am also expecting to review a fairly large format 3D printer in the near future that might match it perfectly!
I played with the David Laser system many years ago without much luck. I keep watching and hoping someone would make something that would work well with tiny, 3D printable scans.

The calibration card is handy, not having to worry about calibration files. For my they match nicely the Lizard and the Einstar…
I am considering purchasing the Einstar3D scanner and your video helped answer a lot of questions about the capabilities of the unit. I would recommend that you go further upon obtaining a 3D scan of an object and demo how you would use it in a CAD program (Solidworks, Autodesk etc.).

Im keen to see accuracy comparisons between the different scanners.
Pixologic ZBrush is a king amongst point-cloud re-meshing.
I use it to clean up CT and MRI data sets...oh and photogrammetry.
It has great tools to clean up the polygon soup, to create beautiful edge loop and perfect bolt holes.
Best software I have ever purchased and Ive been a "3D modeler" for 23yrs.
Zbrush is a 2.5D software, so GPU power is irrelevant. Its the RAM and CPU that are crucial...and lots of it.
I just know Ill be watching this again.

Awe dang! I just got a POP2 only a couple months ago. It seems to work "alright", but this looks like a much better option. Might have to upgrade.
Hold up for the comparison video, the Pop2 is still a decent tool…. There are no “magic” options at this price range
finaly a product thats close to the price range normal people can afford, looking forward to the scan off. it does look like the cable makes scanning every angle a bit hard, how long is it and can get you a longer one?

Buttons on the scanner are huge. Damn CR01 has you needing 3 hands between dragging the laptop around due to a short cord and having to keep an eye on the scan area, having a hand on the mouse to start the scan, and trying to watch your scanner distance.
I bought it 3 weeks ago and I did not test it yet.....seeing this video i know for sure I will have a lot of fun with it

I have noticed that the scanners you’ve tried so far have been near a $1000 price point. This is out of reach for many people.
Think you could try using an Xbox 360 Kinect as one of the comparison scanners in the next video? Would be great to see how much better the scan quality is compared to the high end ones!
There been a couple of people mentioned the Kinect, to be honest I think photogrammetry is a better option than a dirt cheap option, but a real budget method of scanning and getting a useful result is probably worth a video on its own…

I bought the einstar about a month or so ago. I was using it to scan my intake manifold so I can get proper dimensioning and bolt placement for my itb setup but shifted to focus on designing my headers, so I haven't been using it as of late really.. However, I was pretty impressed by the scanners capabilities. I need a bit more practice with it of course since I'm still new to the scan world but definitely a good entry level 3D scanner to me for a hobbyist guy.

You make reference to "generating point cloud". From my LiDAR background I think you start with a point cloud, then generate a surface model. Am I incorrect?
I got a revopoint pop 1 last year, and had nothing but frustration with it....litterally hours of frustration from losing tracking and not picking up where it left off to a total lack of being able to align models. It has remained in the box since as a result and I basically see it as a bad waste of money. Every time you would reach a point where I had difficulty with the pop, and the ease of which this scanner had no difficulty doing what would have been impossible with the pop, I remarked to myself that this is the scanner to own. The biggest plus with this is the quality and ease with the processing software. Light years ahead of the pop! Your point about accuracy and specs taking a backseat to ease of use and especally with the software is spot on. Great review and particually because I'm a car guy and the uses you are using it for are precisely what I will be using it for, so that gave extra value to your video. Great Work!
Yeah, you’re not the only one having some issues with the Pop, but you can say the same for pretty much all scanners. For car bits, this scanners is pretty much the choice….
@ ~22:00 you created a flat bottom on the hub, but didn't square the part to the grid. I'm assuming the hub face is 90 to the bottom of the hub, is there a way to do this? Great vid series, BTW!
Great video. Do you have any experience with the higher end Einscan models like the Pro 2x? I wonder how they compare, particularly in accuracy and speed. I'm seeing them used around 3000-4000€.

Thanks for the informative walk through. Where would you say lies the threshold to how reflective a material this Einstar can handle? I've once used the Creaform Metrascan, see that blue light laser can handle shiny stainless, hear it can even handle chrome. There's a hefty price tag to go along with that. This solution looks interesting, but need to know the constraints. Thanks.
It is better than most, but it still can’t handle full reflective surfaces.
Thanks for your great reviews and explanations, with this scanner and the CR-Scan Lizard. In this you showed scanning a large object like the front end of the Mini with the Einstar. Were you able to do the same with the CR-Scan Lizard (a process video would be great if so). Thanks!

Very well made video David! The quality on the upright wasn't so impressive compared to lizard scans, but the software and large scans seems leagues ahead, esp the software, lots of neat features.
Cheers Cedric, the Einstar is a different beast than the Lizard, it excels at large scans, but struggles at tripod distance, where the Lizard does it’s best work… I won’t be selling my Lizard that’s for sure…

Great work! I recently (as in still returnable) picked up the Revopoint POP2 for scanning car parts. It's seemed to be the best bang for the buck, at the time. Until your video made me rethink my choice. The first thing I noticed about the POP 2 was the that it wanted an ideal distance, which was pretty close, between it and the item being scanned. Considering that I'll be scanning sizable automotive elements, from uprights to unibody frame sections, would you recommend the Einstar? Now the challenge is that I have this wicked MacBook M1 Pro with 32GB of RAM and 19 GPUs, which the Einstar doesn't seem to support. Ug. 🤦🏼 Looking forward to the next video with product comparisons.

For the things you mentioned, yes the Einstar is the best of scanners I’ve used and in user experience general is different league compared to anything else I have tried.
The downside of the Einstar is the small objects, (down to 4 or 5 inches), it works but then the CR-Lizard and Pop2 take over.
And the MacBook well… lovely piece of kit but the world of Engineering runs on Windows (plus the Einstar really wants an NVIDIA GPU)…😬🤷♂️
@@MakingforMotorsport Thanks, mate! Good to know. I have a mate with a few NVIDIA RTX 3090's from an old miner. I think he mite spare one for a pint or two. But, I think it speaks to the Einstar's capabilities if it requires such hardware, compared to the POP 2, which runs off my iPhone. 🤔

This was a interesting and educational video, thank you. In your next set of tests, maybe you can try scanning a firearm, something dark or black in color and discuss the reasons and possible work-a rounds for the difficulties of the current scanners to scan dark colored objects. Without spraying a clients precious firearm with dry shampoo or other semi permanent marking technique I can only wait for the technology to catch up to this inconvenience. Maybe also discuss what would make future scanning devices better. For example, Ultra Violet, Infra red AND Sonic all in the same device. Keep up the great videos, and thank you!
Hi Don, I have a range of new scanners being tested so more conversation coming, but scanning a firearm isn’t something I can do because there aren’t many knocking about in the Uk! 😂

Sure, I agree a firearm is hard to find, but maybe a piece of dark steel, a dull wrench, lead pipe, or maybe a toy painted shiny black, anything to mimic the color and textures of a firearm. Point being to see which, if any, of the current models can scan those colors and sheens, Just a conversation on what makers can do to improve the scan abilities and mesh qualities of dark items. @Making for Motorsport Dave, you mentioned the Lizard and Pop2 are are better for smaller objects. Is the accuracy better or is there better point density? Can you scan several objects with known dimensions to get an idea of the accuracy? I'm looking to do some bootleg metrology and your videos are exactly the information I need. This software seems to be essentially the same as the Einscan range which are thousands of dollars… it works well!
I feel like you can 3d print a handle for the device to make it more comfortable in the hand after long periods of time

Very cool tool and demo. Can it add selected dimensioning? Can it clean uo and dimension holes? Can it add joint lines between multiple attached parts i.e. the hub intersection with the Steering Knuckle?
The software can do dimensioning in the software and add planes and such, but if you really want all that info you need to do Reverse Engineering… I have a vid on that

How big were the save files of the brake and car?
Ive used the aerospace grade leica ones that take something like 2,000,000 points for an area around 12" squared. insane quality! 0.001" accuracy i believe
