A nice summary of the different scanners. I was sold on the Einstar so I can't wait to receive it now. I have a large set of 1/18 scale SAABs, but the manufacturer went bust, so I'll be using this on my own SAAB to complete the collection. Oh and survey work ,too. Thank you for the recommendation.😮

I own Zbrush and its incredible for taking scan soup tri-polygons and making perfect edged looped quad-polygons.
The "Einstar" is the best suited for what Id love to do.

Great comparisons, Looks like the secrete to scanning is all about the flatter the shinnyness is the better the scan so anything shinny or semi gloss will make scanner really struggle. You also could rub down the ducco with 800 wet and dry take off the shine before scanning . Even the metal control arm has a little shine transitions around collar hub that mucks with scan.

I suspect the accuracy would be better if there was less beer consumption. Seriously, this might be the best 3d scanner shootout on UA-cam! Saving my pennies for an Einstar to compliment my Pop2.

In austria/german is a synonyme for beer, wich is called "zielwasser". it means nothing less, than everyone can aim things better than without beer :)...

This was very helpful, thank you! I've been holding off on getting a 3d scanner for quite a while now, mostly because the process seems very labor intensive, but also because I just didn't get a good feel for how they might be realistically used from the tests and demos I've seen. From other sources, I thought the Pop 2 might be the best choice for me, because I mostly am looking for precision for small parts. Your testing confirmed that this is a good choice, and that I'll also be able to use it to scan larger parts, too, with time and care. Oh, and the stein for the precision test? Hilarious!

Excelent video! Congrats! I have just received my Einstar. Will start working with it next week, but on thing that you must consider is the size of the part to be scaned. I would go for the Einstar for a large depth of view and the Revopoint mini for small parts. I run a small 3D engineering business in Brazil, focused on car tunning and panel improvements for customization, so that is why I need to think deeply before purchasing equipment.
I am yet to play with the RevoPoint Mini… I hope to have my hands on one soon!

I have seen the Revo appearing for sale on eBay a lot cheaper than your price 10 months ago when you made this video. At work we have a new machine that uses a small 3D printed suction tube. They are easily broken and cost 330 euro! So if we could make some of these bespoke items, it would pay for the Revo easily. I like the idea of printing shoe inserts, also mobile clear covers, and many other small items.

Although I understand your reasoning for laptop/desktop choices, I can't help but think all the units involved would have benefited from the computing power. At the very least the software process times and stability, but from my experience, you would have better scanning as well.
Sidebar, it's funny, the "back button" was my suggestion to Revopoint back in the early POP1 Kickstarter period.
Can't wait for further videos, as the consumer scanning segment is changing and growing almost daily.
Just my 2 cents.
I understand your point on the power, and I also think you are probably right.
However, the units should be judged against the manufacturers stated requirements, that should give acceptable performances. And apart from the Einstar I am thereabouts on specification.
The back button is a great idea… well done! (This has now been suggested to Shining3D)
I would love to see a comparison between consumer scanners vs scanning with the Face ID module on an iPhone.

Thank you very much for this comparison. I think I will give a try to Einstar. Now I have POP2 and Mini. I also had POP1. So far for every aplication I am good with mini, because I scan small parts that fits into revopoint turntable. MINI's accuracy is really amazing to me but I guess large parts would be pain in the ass.

Thank you so much. I was eagerly waiting for this video. Still I´m not sure which way to go for my current project. I want a 3D model of a vintage motorcycle engine case/ the case halves as a backup to eventually have one machined if (more like when) the casting fails which is common in that engine under moderate power increase.
The Einstar seems to be where it´s at accuracy wise but not for the intricate details since it´s long range. Also it´s quite an investment and I wonder how much a scan done as a service with a five figure scanner would be in comparison.

Great video, thank you for doing this. Do you have dimensions of some of the features on the Mini? Something like headlight diameter and distance between the screws on the fender flare? I'd like to compare to the stl files when you get them up.

Thanks for a great review with lots of work that has gotten into it. There were 2 things I missed. First I wish you tried to scan some shiny/reflective objects in the short range on the turntable. Second I missed the final representation with all the colors and texture the scanners picked up. And finally I wished the Einstar did a better job in the short range, because it would have been an easy pick...

Just one note, you can alter the lizards calibration file as it's stored on the USB stick you received with it. However, good luck understanding it!
I scanned a half metre step gauge with mine and I found it to gain around 0.05mm of linear error over each 30mm distance. So just a linear scaling issue but I haven't managed to adjust my calibration file to make up for it yet.
That is weird that you got a linearly scaled error but mine felt more like an offset error… I haven’t tried to hack the lizard… maybe in the future?!
@@MakingforMotorsport do you mean the offset doesn't change over linear distance? That sounds like an even easier equation to solve. I haven't looked if the community have worked out how to do it yet but it's definitely worth a look.
Yeah, my tests showed 0.4mm error over the 3” and 1” dimensions with the 123block
The Einstar however gave 0.3% error consistently, that was only 0.07mm on the 1” dimension
@@MakingforMotorsport trying to decide which of these errors I'd rather have. With the consistent errors you could just scale your point cloud if it's consistent in all directions.

Looks like I might wait another year or 2. I do a lot of 3D Printing but I do my own designs. Would be nice to have a scanner for things that I have that perhaps broke where I can maybe glue the broken part together, scan it, and print a replacement rather than spending design time. But in a couple years things might get better. Nice comparison.
In regards to scanning the scanner that can lose tracking and pick it back up quickly is the more usable scanner for large objects.
Really great overview! I picked up a CR-Scan Lizard for a car project but was having a lot of trouble with large scans, at least it wasn't user error? I have been resorting to using 3D scanning apps on my iPad which have been working well enough as a stop gap. I would be curious to see how that stacks up against these dedicated scanners. Thanks for another great video!

would be cool to see how precise those scanners are when you scan something that does not fit into frame size as it did in this video - I believe that is when einstar woult shine compared to POP and others. I got terrible results with POP in regards of precission when scanning anything that is larger than its frame size. especially parts with not much reference elements.
Thanks for the great comparison. I have both the CR01 and Pop2. I haven't used either in months coz of the faff. Often faster and less frustration with a set of calipers. Workflow is a massive part of things. You should add the time it takes to spray and clean the object. Or add the cost of AESUB at $75AUD a can. So for me, the Einstar is a leap forward. If anyone wants to swap an Einstar for a Pop2 and a CR01 let me know! 😜
Me too, I bought a Scan Lizard a few months before the Einstar came out and have been regretting since. The software straight up sucks
4 parts Isopropyl + 1 part baby talcum powder = DIY scanning spray.
Only disadvantage it leaves a mess, but compared to the price of a can of AESUB I clean that up happily.
Saves the can for delicate parts 😉

@@MakingforMotorsport Yup, for me getting even one of them I need to look deep into the wallet and think twice. But it seems it might be worth pushing the cost to get the Einscan since it was pretty good all around, even on the small stuff even though not being it's main thing to do. The noise in the windows could probably be remedied with a more thorough scan I guess?
@@rejsa-nu you could make a decent model from the CR01, but it’d take a lot of clean up. There is definitely a great scan in the other 3, but like I said in the video, but the Einstar needs more help….

I've spent hours sifting through reviews and through all of the noise couldn't get a clear idea of any single product that was actually helpful. Either things were amazing or they were terrible and anyody who said anything different was a shill, shill was a very commonly used word. Not only do I feel like I have a clearer idea of what direction I'm going in but you've changed my mind as to which one I'm going with.
I'm sure all of these pale in comparison to the better scanners out there that cost thousands, but many of us are just trying to get something affordable that outperforms our iPhone lidar function.
Thanks Brian, scanning at this level is as much about knowing how to get the best out of each scanner, and understanding each one’s limitations… and they all have limits. it’s very easy to get it wrong and blame the tool…

Most of my designs are small but somewhat complex. I need a scanner that can pickup threads and be precise enough that the threads work. A scanned and printed M4 bolt needs to screws into a purchased M4 nut. Preferably even finer threads. Hopefully we can get something like this in a few years.
None of these are what you want, the RevoPoint Mini might be a better fit.
That said, I have no idea why you want scan threads and then just print them. Features like that will always better to measure with a thread gauge, and then re-model using a thread feature on the CAD. All you really need from the scan is the centreline…
There is no scanner technology available that can scan threads especially that small lol. What you would do is use a scanner to get a point cloud for overall bolt length and diameter then use that data to recreate threads in a CAD program. I rent the bigger expensive laser scanners for work and even on max definition it wouldn't produce useable threads that small.
@@MakingforMotorsport That's very true. Something like an M4 bolt could be easily created in a CAD program such as OpenSCAD using the Threads library and printed in just a few minutes with excellent results. Non standard threads are trickier and require creating your own linear extrusion model, but still much easier than trying to use a 3D scanner. Great video by the way. I have been using the Mole scanner which is similar to the Lizard and it seems to work well (for small parts).
Thanks for sharing! I'm a lizard user and noticed the hardest objects to scan also have the highest cpu utilisation. If the cpu get saturated the software starts losing tracking really fast. I've had parts unscanable with the laptop that were no problem with the desktop.
Therefore I'm not convinced using the laptop for the other scanners paints the best picture possible. Anyway i like your video's a lot, keep up the good work!
I hear you, but the Lizard gave some of the best (or at least near the top) scans aesthetically, with the only one it struggled with was the body panel and that’s more to do field of view and the features only tracking….
All that said, a better laptop was on Christmas list, but Santa let me down 😢, so I guess I’ll have to buy one!
@@MakingforMotorsport why you didn't put the towel and the spray with the lizzard then, quite unfair, is very easy take out that panel with the lizzard with the same or less effort was put with the pop2
Globally the most convincing are Lizzard and Einstar. The lizard failed in the car but wasn't put enough effort, no even the same thing done with the pop2 spray and towel.
The Einstar is the second better in everything but the lizard except in that, was 1st or second.
Having in account the money and that I get with external free software the same functionality than the Einstar software, just take the Lizzard. That car can be nicely done with the effort and experience
@@Flamenawer hi. I agree, all of these results can be improved, with more effort, which I think I flagged adequately in the video.
The difficulty is, that if someone just want to scan sections of whole cars, the only choice is the Einstar. Yes others work, and I could make it work with the Lizard, but I’d only do that if I already had one.
@@Flamenawer because the lizard has such a small field of view, all you would be scanning would be the towel.

Awesome video cheers, the Einstar is the only one I don't own. (I have pop1, pop2, CRscan 01 & lizard). Of the ones I own, pop2 is usually my go to scanner.
Would love to see some more small object scans from the Einstar (I understand this isn't it's strength area but it's what I usually scan & the one scan you did looked pretty reasonable).
Would have been interesting to see how a two position scan on the small figurine with pop2 would have turned out as I think it was only one position? Would have picked up the overhangs at least... Cheers
Yeah, I would have done more on each scan, but, honestly I was limited by time… with scanning and editing I have easily spent 30hrs on this video, so I had to pick and choose… if it was a decent scan straight away, I took it and moved on, unless it was super easy (like with the lizard) to do 2. I do call it in the video tho, a second scan would tidy all of that up…
It is always a fear when you buy a consumer scanner whether they will be good - after seeing this comparison, I am glad the Lizard I bought performs as well as it does vs competitors. That said, I may invest in an Einstar later, for larger scans.
Just a thought but: for really fine detail you could look into getting a action figure of any show you like (maybe a GUNDAM which has a lot fine elements, also some model cars, preferably some convertibles so that the scanner can work on the interior and the long sheets like the bonnet and trunk, etc).

Great video, nice job on the different scans. I own a Creality CR Scan 01 and have had very few problems with my scans, the issues arise from the software used to "clean-up" scans or mesh scans. I am currently using Meshlab or WireMesh depending on what I am working on, but they are both extremely time consumptive and a pain in the ___ to work with. If you don't have any experience with working with this type of software, GET HELP! This is NOT a point and click situation. This also takes immense amounts of time to get combined scans to create a finished piece that can be printed and have a worthwhile outcome. Again, your video is great and explains a lot of the difficulties people may have when using anyone of these scanners. Great job!!! Keep up the great work. Oh and drink a pint for us!!!

I just received the CR-Scan 01 and I've tried to get it to work on 3 different computers. No luck, every time, I get 'scanner failed to connect'. All computers have USB3 ports so that can't be the problem. Not very user friendly, I'd say.

Great video, thanks. It's such a shame that Hewlett Packard completely ruined what was the David scanner project by buying it and then doing absolutely no further development before discontinuing it. It was so far ahead of anything else available at the time in terms of value for money, flexibility and scalability (it's ability to scan both small and large items). It blew away some far more expansive scanners 10 years ago. I'm sure if it had continued being developed as a semi open source project by Simon and Sven, the original developers, it'd blow these away, as it would have had at least 10 years more development. I have dual camera HP 3D Scan 5 system, and would be tempted by the Einscan if it didn't mean I also need a new workstation spec laptop (I don't 'need' one enough to justify the expense at present). That awesome auto tracking of scans of larger, difficult to register shapes such as body panels which is such a time saver, doesn't come for free in terms of processing power I suppose!
Sadly the store of many fantastic projects crushed by corporate giants.
Ive got a re-branded HP SLS scanner too and its such a bore to use. Yes I agree its awful they just bought it and let it die. Why ? What did they want with it? Why would a company buy something and then not develop it? Its not like they had a competing product ???
@@Andrewatnanz I believe they bought if for David's software, to use parts of (mesh alignment???) it in a very bizarre HP product called Sprout, which seems to have been a big failure
@@richardjones38 yeah I am pretty mad I have spent thousands and thousands on that system and my license keeps expiring for no reason. Seriously its got the BEST mesh alignment tool out there and I would keep it just for that but the licensing system is garbage.
which one is best for engine bay scanning?
It will be great help, if you can put up a table on rating out of 10 or so on each aspects and overall for all these 4 scanners, that may be very useful to judge.
Unfortunately not, quantitive measures based on qualitative judgements makes no sense to me… why bother? Just stick with qualitative….

The Einstar has the best Software I agree. For automotive parts probably the best scanner to get.
I bought the Einscan SP in the end because I don’t scan as much auto parts. I have the Revopoint mini for really small parts too.
Does the mini outperform the SP?
@@MakingforMotorsport maybe when scanning really small parts…? But the SP did scan a key better than the mini for example. Less noise in the scan and around the same details. The Revopoint mini can pic up more details but for the most part you don’t need the 0.02 resolution if you not scanning jewelry stuff or really small action figures. The software can’t keep up with the Shining software and you have to use Revopoint Studio for cleanup and fusing the scans.
I would say save more money and get a Einscan SP for small stuff (accuracy around 0.05mm!) and a Einstar for big parts.
In the end you get what you paid for.
I have to add I tried to scan a bottle cap recently and the Revopoint mini did pic up the threads really good. The Einscan SP could not do it.
There is a new software release for the Revopoint too and it’s pretty nice. Worth a second look.
Now that I’m about to get my hands on a Einstar, 3Dmakerpro have the Mole coming out. I don’t know if it will be in the same price range or a comparison between the two would be possible soon.
Like I mentioned in the last Einstar video the software makes all the difference in the world, I will gladly pay the difference in price for the Einstar for the easy of use software. Hands down only problem is I need to get a computer with the juice to run it.
I got my pop2 on a early kickstarter pledge... I haven't used it a great deal but did scan a sectioned/cut cylinder head to create a 3d printed model which would serve as the probe piece for having CNC porting work done... it did a decent job but it took forever to get a decent scan... there's a few other things I attempted to scan with it and I had to really douse them all in the aesub spray... but based on this I see I could've chosen a better scanner...
Whatever gets the job done for an affordable price is a decent tool… but some do require less effort than others 😂

@9:55 "how well it renders those holes and how well the scanner sees down into those holes" - Remember that you are looking at a processed mesh here. You have to look at the actual point cloud to see if the scanner can see down into the holes. If you'd ask me, these holes are are filled by the meshing algorithm and that actually looks nice but that same algorithm may be the reason for the strange meshing error in the bigger hole shown just before. The Einstar leaves the holes unmeshed because their algorithm will not fill the holes because of too few scan points in the holes which I prefer over filling them. That is because I mostly scan for reverse engineering purposes when I need to create a part that fits an existing part, needs to fit in a certain place (inside the scanned part) or when I want to recreate (a modified version of) a part. In these cases I rather want to do a manual measurement when the scan tells me it's lacking data or precision of the data.
I completely agree with your points, the closer cameras on the Lizard vs the Einstar would seem enable it to see further into holes. However as the scanner and software work as a system, seperating them doesn’t make too much sense to me.
That said, when RE’g it always makes sense to physically measure when possible, in my RE video I physically measure the drive flange model off that, using the scan to locate the centre line of the wheel hub in relation to the pick up points…
Have you seen the Miraco yet? It would seem to combine the best of all worlds with near and far scanning modes, plus standalone is a bonus.
Can you compare the Revopoint Range, Revopoint mini, and the new Creality Ferrret scanners?

Nice job on the videos. You tried the blanket trick on the Pop2, curious if it would make the lizard scan usable in the same scenario? I know the Einstar will be better for large objects, but with only one scanner, is it possible to do larger scans with the lizard, when only needing them very infrequently?
The field of view is smaller with the Lizard than the Pop2 on Body mode, so you’ll struggle to have the blanket close enough without obscuring the thing you want to scan…
If it was thin enough you could try it…

For over all scanning auto interiors to make speaker boxes what do you feel would be best?
Recently I've tried Scanning with my phone a shiny object Took hundreds of pics , loaded them into the rendering program noly to be thwarted by the metallic paint. Have you tested the Scanners for reflected surfaces? I used Mehlab program.

Both of the Creality scanners do quite well, the Einstar did vastly better in the scan of the mini, which is impressive, scanning a shiny smooth surface does not seem like a simple feat.
Of all of the scanners, I think the lizard would do what I need the best, then the Einstar in second. cr-01 third, and I was not terribly impressed with the pop2, although the accuracy was astounding, it didn't seem to do good with surfaces.
But after seeing the prices of each of them, I'll stick to my $10 calipers and waste a little filament on some test prints getting everything shaped just perfect.
I was surprised by the CR01, especially for automotive stuff….
@@MakingforMotorsport It did very good. just barely edged out by the Lizard and Einstar in my opinion, but it was so close. I suspect as has happened with printers themselves, as time goes on, community firmwares and softwares come around, tech improves and prices come down there will be a lot of interesting things in store!
I am quite dissapointed by POP2 performance. I am convinced that it can spit reasonable scans but I didnt use it too much so far. Videos like this motivate me to try some tests. But I agree with Dave - I guess none of hobby grade scanners would be great in all applications. Iam thinking about getting einstar to my POP2 and MINI or replace POP2 by Einstar

Thank you for the video! I already have Revopoint pop2 and mini scanners, and I can say that they are really good! Mini scanner have amazing resolution. Now, I watched your video and decided to buy Einstar! It looks like that it is much more easy to scan with it! It is more stable during scanning process due to large scanning area.
The tracking performance on larger objects is next level… car sized objects are perfect for it.

would you recommend using a POP mini for face scans?
The shiny paint might have made it hard for the scanners. A matte finish coating may have worked better.
Have you tried throwing a wet newspaper on top of the fender for tracking? It should be quite thin and has a lot of trackable stuff on it (at least on photo mode, not sure about the geometry mode).. anyways, a good comparison, thanks for it 👍

The Lizard gives you a great product aesthetically! The Einstar seems like the best scanner for truly usable end products. It's also the most hardware intensive and most expensive, though not by much. Impressive accuracy from the Pop2 given some of its other issues. I think the overall winner is the Einstar, especially for automotive use. The Lizard is really good too though and I'd consider it.
Shining3d are working on a new software to allow less aggressive specs needed. Hopefully releasing Q1 in 2023

@@802Garage the latest update, it has helped with how fast the point cloud builds when scanning. You can get more of your part green quicker whilst scanning. They seem a bit slow on banging out updates for the einstar but I hope there will be some improvements to the tools you can use after scanning soon. It's my go to scanner regardless. Excellent scanner
what you think about russian 3d scanner RangeVision Spectrum and scanform l5?
I am curious if you were to scan a tray-like sheet metal part from top/bottom, would it pick up the wall thickness accurately enough to check the extent of thinning on the bends?
Hmm… if you are looking at 0.1-0.2mm resolution, then that is tricky…. I am sure there are scanners which can do it, just maybe not these ones…
the CR01 scan looked the best imo in the first scan, but smaller parts really is its weakness... im looking at the creality ferret scanner tbh, advertized 0.1mm accuracy aswell

I recently sold my lizard to make space for a new contender the Whale. It's essentially an upgraded lizard and cr01 in one.
So I'm hopeful it does close and far scanning. As I did recognise limitations of the lizard on bigger items.
Maybe in the future a Whale / Einstar comparison is good. Einstar seems to be the all rounder once you have very high end hardware for it to process on.
Funnily enough… guess who has a Whale coming? I don’t know pricing tho…

@@TooCoolVids i paid €850 including shipping and customs for the whale with turntable. It's really not a 7k plus scanner. So i would expect in the future a huge discount price from there current pricing.

@@Tixbomber everyone that has one right now bought at the initial release price of €850-1100 depending on how quick they ordered. Then price went upto current price.
