Can also just solder a simple barrel connector to the kinect instead of buying the adapter and swapping the proprietary usb to a regular 3.0 usb A for all you tech repair guys out there.
I used a dead USB stick for the USB plug, and the USB stick housing became the place to keep the solder joints tidy. I just soldered a power pack straight to the wires instead of having a socket. I figured the USB port I'm plugging into is likely to always be within a metre or so of a power socket.
Some people reported the Kinect V2 dying if 12V is applied without having a 5V source due to backfeeding. I solved this with a relay that turns on the 12V supply only if I have the 5V USB plugged in. I don't wanna risk my Kinect :)
Finally a good video about this, I shared my experience on reddit with the V2 version, but I needed a direct comparison with the v1 version, and now I see why the result of the V2 version is inferior 😢, I would like to investigate the code of the 3D scanner but I don't know how to program lol.
I remember how when the Kinect was announced as Project Natal, it was "the future". There was that tech demo with an AI boy in a presentation, it was an age of big promises. These days I would only want to buy one for the 3D scanning purpose, though watching someone else do it is cheaper and less effort is involved, so thanks.

Kinect still lives, sort of. Microsoft licensed it to a Michigan company called Orbbec, who are making "Femto Bolt", a camera with the same TOF depth sensor as the Azure, but a more compact enclosure, a different RGB camera, and improved multi-camera sync. They've dropped the array mic that covered the top of Azure, which is one reason the enclosure is about half the size. More interestingly, Orbbec's SDK is open source and you can use the Bolt with Windows, Linux, and MacOs. Now, as far as apps... Orbbec also has a series of camera called "Astra" that look like Kinect 1 and a series called "Gemini" that look like Intel RealSense.
yes looks the same but bit smaller, but the price £400+ I think most people would hole 360 game console with free Kinect 1 chuck with the deal? if only going to the exact same thing, even £10+ in PC adapter break out box, on top that?
I actually used two of the original Klinects and published a research paper many years back on the application and use of two 3d scanners for optimal placement and accuracy. I've owned the kinnect for windows since release and did a few things with it and the original leap controller (when it was still in beta). Super underutilized tools.
Hmm, have a Kinect V1 sitting in my closet. Time to get it out and test this out. Been wanting to get a scanner for a while, and if this can get close to what I want without spending any more money, then that would be great. Thanks for the video
So glad I found your channel! I have a Kinect that's been collecting dust for years. Time to hack it. I'll continue watching now. ☺ Oh no, I am on Linux
Really glad you're enjoying it. Next episode definitely covers a free method that you certainly can do with an iPhone, but I'll also be covering some iOS exclusives later in the series. Happy scanning!
Amazing video! It's a shame that Microsoft never released the full code for this sensor, and that there hasn't been any competition at this level. I have the Leap Motion, which is also totally outdated. Will you make a video about that? An open platform for open-source software and Linux would be amazing.
V2 is great for large area scans. Plus doing the mod for a 12V barrel jack greatly simplifies that cable setup. Just need a regular USB B 3.0 cable at that point. RTAB-Map works great for this.
wait... you can do other things other than kinect adventures? kidding aside, I had a laptop with all the 3d scanning tools for kinect and the drive failed. This is very timely. Thanks
Amazing, a few years ago I did this briefly with I think 3d scan or something on the ms app store. I busted out my kinect a couple weeks ago and well, that app is no longer avail and looked around for a bit how to do this. Gave up and moved on. Thanks for making this video! EDIT: well, I finally watched the video and ya, you mentioned 3D Scan too. that's not available for me (US, win 11). The "GET" button is grayed out. oh well, thanks anyways.

Then later get one for the xbox one model assuming I cant mod it to not need to the hub, it actually looks like the cable is a usb 3.0 type b if you remove it from the one kinect (the grommet area) so I will look into that when I get hands on.
Would love a video on the best possible scanner app for iPhone like the iPhone 14. I want to get into customized 3d printed footwear but not sure how best to approach this.

Either way I think going to some place like Walmart, Target or shoe store to find shoes of different sizes and styles would be a good choice.

Hi again. Still looking forward to a proper tutorial on using the Kinect V1 and reconstruct me. I'm having no success trying to capture hand sized objects. I don't understand why not
I was able to install 3D Builder on Windows 11, in the US, today -- following the same method you described for 3D Scan, but for 3D Builder, instead. -- However, I was not able to find 3D Scan that way.
Watching the video makes me think I could rig up a spinning turn table with my motorised lego technic stuff. Use the live scan features and scan some cars and then use the scanned car models as a base reference mesh for modelling. I purchased a kinect v2 2 years ago to experiment with motion capture. But its just been sitting around. Maybe I could put it to some use
Does anyone know if there's a trick to downloading 3D Scan from MS now? On Win 11 certainly the link in description takes you to the app's page, but download link then goes to the MS Store where there's no download possible.
Hmm, that's interesting. I was on Windows 11 in the video when doing all that, including the download. It may be regional, may I ask where about's you are?

Hi, thank you. Very nice and comprehensive. One situation that no one is exploring is multiple (4 or 8) Kinect devices scanning the same subject (person) at once. That will allow for much better proportion and would be instant. For now the only way (except custom solution with the SDK) is 4 or 8 PCs and mesh merging. Would you be interested to test that?
I havnt finished the video yet but i believe theres 2 versions of the original connect. If my memory serves me correctly the 1st one had an orange plug and the 2nd one had a usb plug. Shouldn't those of us with Quest 3 headsets be able to 3D scan? After all, they have depth sensors and dual camera for 3D vision. Does a wonderful job scanning my room.
i remember for the original kinect there was a lens kit you could use if you had a smaller space than ideal with oem kinect. i wonder if that would allow smaller items to be scanned better.
i noticed you having problems with surfaces on the kinect V2, may i suggest a mixture of flour and iso alcohol applied via spray bottle? i scanned my cars front fascia before and after applying it and it made a massive difference in surface quality, turning flat surfaces from bumpy back to actual flat surfaces, i expect if you do then you will get significantly better results with the v2 vs the v1 since the v2's TOF camera is much more sensitive and accurate on correctly prepped surfaces (because it uses individual points rather than lines} than the v1's line projection and distortion measurement style of scanning. forgive me for the word salad but please do try applying flour to your scans and let me know how that goes :) i dont expect an entire update video or even an extra section but if you could also try it with the V1 since i dont have one on hand and let me know the results that would be amazing
I have the PrimeSense Carmine which is the company apple bought I guess to put into their phones? 3d animation artist so I was early to the 3d scan game:)
I installed everything as in the video, windows 11, neither skanect / k-scan or reconstructme detects the xbox 360 with the default sdk. it shows up in device manager just fine.
Very interesting thank you for this video. Which of these would be best for scanning roads/tracks to be used to create game maps? Always wondered if they could be used like that. Thank you once again, great video.
Glad you enjoyed it thanks very much. In terms of scanning roads/tracks, that's a very big undertaking. I would suggest the kinect certainly isn't a suitable solution for that (something I'll cover more in the final episode of the series), but stick around for the next episode (available already for channel members and coming soon publically) that covers what I'd say would be the best solution for scanning something of that scale.
It still does a good job considering it was absolutely not made for any kind of surface mapping. You still see a LOT of them in use at casinos. At Crown in Melbourne in some areas every table has one mounted above it. I guess its actual function as a skeletal capture unit makes a lot of sense where body language can be so important.
What I would like to know is if either xbox kinects could do scanning of old retro gaming consoles or handhelds well enough that they are just as good or good enough as the original.
Hi, are you videos of the capture process in real-time, or speeded up? When I try to capture myself using v1 kinect and ReconstructMe the system seems to lose reference. And it's gone. Just like 3D Builder, even following the link can no longer get you the software. Why are they taking these great tools away while 3D printing and thus scanning are becoming more popular every day? No freaking clue, but you can bet there will soon be places to sail to get these softwares, if they're not there lol
yup I use scanect. works ok but the model usually needs fixing up.

I have the Kinect v1. Bak then when i connected it to my pc Microsoft patched it with a new firmware. If im right they did this to prevent some features the Kinect for pc did had. But could be the tools and drivers changed after v1 was discontinued. Back then i wanted to use the Kinect as webcam and speech commands. But i abandoned the idea for not getting colors as webcam.
I'm having a hard time to get the v2 working with microsoft 3d scan v1 where you can adjust the resolution (supposed to be better than the v2 app with no adjustment), all i get is a grey screen. 3D scan v2 works normally but the resolution is quite bad.
Weird, i'm logged in to my microsoft account and when i hit download, nothing happens. It opens the microsoft store page but there is no download link and nothing automatically downloads.
Hear me out, lattepanda and V2 scanner combined. Like 3D printed vertical handle with thicker portion to hide lattepanda and lithium cells inside and a small touch screen on the side so it can be operated. Why v2? Better shape and basic app.
Hi, I actually have a spare Azure Kinect DK laying around. What software would you recommend for 3D scanning with it? It seems it isn't as widely supported as the original Kinects and has also been discontinued by MS around a year ago.
What about dimensional accuracy? I know that you're supposed to model dimension-critical parts like mounting points yourself, but if they then don't at least roughly match the scanned model, it was all for naught.
I kind of reference a trick for this in the next episode, talk about dimensional accuracy quite a bit throughout the series, and will be putting some of it into use in the final episode.
Have you had any luck running the Kinect V2 on other USB3.0 Controllers other then Intel and Renesas? I am currently using an AMD USB 3.X Controller and it doesnt seem to be working for me.
Would be cool to get ReconstructMe SDK working with multiple Kinects simultaneously.. Anyone down to start a project, I'm an average coder at best, could use a hand.
If you get this working definitely let me know. K-Scan (the old software I used 7 years ago) had this feature and I was going to do a video on it before they pulled it. Would make it much better for things like doing full body scans.

yup I use scanect. works ok but the model usually needs fixing up.
Gracias
Hmmm... wonder if it would be possible to get a comparable solution working on Linux with libfreenect...
Wouldn't photogrammetry deliver better results? Perhaps that is what you alluding to at the end of video.
Edit: yep it was. look forward to it.
Photogrametry requires details. A kinect can scan things that photogrametry can't, such as a curved surface with no detail.
@@josephwisniewski3673 Can't you just spray a temporary paint speckle or use black and white square stickers to fix that?
Do you think that could be possible to use more than one Kinect to have better results ?
Can you do a video on the other features on Xbox windows sdk
Have you tried using the lens to scan with it?
Hi, I actually have a spare Azure Kinect DK laying around. What software would you recommend for 3D scanning with it? It seems it isn't as widely supported as the original Kinects and has also been discontinued by MS around a year ago.
could you use multiple camera, is there any benefit for that?
What about dimensional accuracy? I know that you're supposed to model dimension-critical parts like mounting points yourself, but if they then don't at least roughly match the scanned model, it was all for naught.
I kind of reference a trick for this in the next episode, talk about dimensional accuracy quite a bit throughout the series, and will be putting some of it into use in the final episode.
I can't download Microsoft's 3d scan. Are there any alternatives

What this is WILD.
HOLY EYE CONTACT BATMAN! Great vid, just stop staring at me.
Have you had any luck running the Kinect V2 on other USB3.0 Controllers other then Intel and Renesas? I am currently using an AMD USB 3.X Controller and it doesnt seem to be working for me.
After scanning human faces with a 3D scanner, can a 3D resin printer be purchased immediately from the application?
3d Scan seems like it doesn't work anymore. When I get to the store page, the "get" button is greyed out and unclickable.
@@3DRevolution no promises, have to work around the SDK license as well
Please cover the sdk
Microsoft no longer supports this program and dropped it from the store
Boa tarde!
Just bought my v1 for pickup at a local GameStop for
Hi
Very interesting Video but installed on Win 11 and got a flashing green light . Any help would much appreciated
Do you recommend any free program for designing on the obtained scan?
Fusion 360 by AutoDesk (which has now been named simply 'Fusion') is my cad software of choice, and there is a free license available providing it's not being used commercially.
Sadly for some reason the GET button is greyed out when I attempt to download from the windows store..... is there another way to get this program?
It would have been nice if Microsoft opened up the firmware as opensource for these discontinued products. 😢
You can use libfreenect1 for the sensors discussed in this video, and libfreenect2 for the kinect v2 that I have. I'm not sure if the OpenKinect project has done anything recently.
I have been trying to get this to work for quite some time. I cannot get this to work with Windows 11, and Kinect V2. If anybody has any tips, please share.
Sensor update failed.retrying... this is the error i get on reconsrtuctme with my kinect v1 any pointers??
Can you please post 3d scan software offline, I can't downloading it from ms store

Will a kinect for windows work the same way?
can we use it for windows 10 ???
