I have called these hotlines a couple times in my life when I knew the next thing I was going to do if I didn't call was make a solid plan to take my life. When I called, I ended up feeling so grateful for the compassion I was given that I wanted the responder to have a good night and didn't want to let them down after they showed such support. It may not have fixed any of my long-term problems, but it gave me encouragement, comraderie, and a reason to live one more day. One of them was more open about their life and their courage to become a responder was inspiring. I am now in a more solid treatment plan with medicine and a therapist. Thank you, first responders of every kind!

It doesn't make sense how they could help people when they only PRETEND to care. Everytime I've called, its been a big joke. Those people don't deserve any sort of respect. Anybody that calls them and is satisfied with a person saying an EMPTY script of questions with the sole purpose of determining if authorities need to be called, has extremely low standards of what real help is.

@@Brawl_Tarts They're their as a flimsy attempt to satisfy their emotional discomfort over the existence of people who want to "exit". @@for_logic_and_reason-mark_3 That makes absolutely no sense. People volunteer to do this, because they have compassion and want to help others. They are trained to listen and provide support for others, because they care.

I think I'm going to do this as a job. I'm 43, a recovering addict who has suffered with debilitating depression / bi-polar. It's insane even today. It takes on average, 15 years before a person with mental illness gets a proper diagnosis. Can you imagine if you had cancer for 15 years and couldn't get a diagnosis? We have a very long way to go. But seeing young people be interactive and volunteering is so encouraging to me. So thankful for all the information you're sharing. ❤

OF COURSE people don't go, because therapist just want MONEY, and an 1 a week is nothing, what about the other 23 hours? Life's horrors and absurdites are a consistent thing, no therapist can fix that. Going to therapy is laughed at because its a JOKE. therapist have no power to punish wickedness, give justice, and even adequately analyze reality for philosophical truth. Its largely a waste of time. And nobody wants to have a debate on it. So more psychological horrors coming, and some of them will get news stories. You get what you get.

After working for around four years in crisis lines in a different country, I must applaud you for your exceptional explanation. If I may, I want to emphasize the importance of being mindful of the language we use while discussing suicide. It is incorrect to use the term "commits" with suicide as it suggests a criminal act. Suicide is no longer considered a crime in most countries, and we should avoid implying otherwise. I admit that I also made this mistake when I first started working in the field. Having said that, the video was truly outstanding, and any crisis line would be fortunate to have someone like you on their team.

I felt I had to watch this to have a little understanding to why someone I knew took his life. From what his family told me is that he had contacted suicide hotline and the lady was indifferent in helping him shortly after he took his life. He made a recording of the audio and I heard it and in shocked someone would behave with such indifference when he was dying of cancer and needed help. I do hope in the future that the people working for the suicide hotline get more intensive training to deal with people in need. thank you for posting the video.

I understand this. One time I called when I was feeling particularly low and suffering from suicidal ideation, and the woman on the phone essentially asked me if there was a chance that I was going to take my life that night.
When I said that I was not at immediate risk, she basically told me that I should look after myself and hung up.
I needed to talk to someone, and she just rushed straight to the end, which really only made me feel worse than I did already.
I have to say though, that one experience I had with a helpline was exceptional. I was really at my lowest, and the woman led me on a journey into my own mind with her questions which allowed me to explore where my thoughts and feelings were coming from. She stayed on the phone with me for almost 90 minutes, and after that call I was filled with hope and I think that was a crucial moment in my recovery journey.

I volunteered the suicide hotline for years and loved it. Some calls you never forget even after 25 years for me. Yes there is a lot of evil calls. But there are a lot of calls of depression. The confessions that i listen to were to horrible to put on here. I will change the way you look at people.

True but I often disagree w the advice aspect bc many ppl do want to know there are options.. they won't necessarily take it but that's the thing with advice.
I'm sure a lot of it has to do with legal issues unfortunately.
I very much want to work for q suicide crisis hotline-tyvm for sharing.
P.S. for a loyal life saving job why is it mostly unpaid? Some ppl want to work more time as a crisis counselor but obviously they have bills 🙄..

I sometimes like to prank call them to irritate them, hahaha. LET GO of your need to respect them. There's no rational reason to give them any respect, they don't have respect for YOU. Calling them is ONLY good for venting to somebody pretending to listen and for attempting to get locked up.

Just me and I don't say it's the same for everyone (but it probably is for some), but to say that someone seems "confused" in this context seems very patronising. Somehow putting them "in the wrong" or highlighting a "weakness", or trivialising what they're saying. We all get confused from time to time, (Pretty much my default setting), but here it's like "Aww diddums, did you want to commit suicidywidy then? You're just tired. You're just confused. Go and have a lie down till it goes away." Plus just repeating the last thing they said would be a tad irritating for me. Try this one. Floccinaucinihilipilification!
