Luv the Kirovet K 700. Can’t beat that old mechanical diesel sound with turbo awesome I liked several of these and just have to say you have to be on or near a locomotive when it starts to fully appreciate it starting and running on low idle. The absolute shear power of these engines is amazing.
I worked in some extremely cold conditions in northern Canada … so cold the diesel turned to jelly …..had to use a tiger torch on the fuel tank … close off the underbelly with shrouds ..to free up the fuel lines … tiger torch the oil pan for a few minutes……. Either in the air cleaner…. Had to get it started with very little battery life ……. Survival depended on it ……. Some weeks it was a Daily routine …. Got good at it , didn’t blow up any motors ….. mind you this was 40 years ago…. It was an interesting time to say the least ..!
I need more Kirovet engine noises in my life. By far the most glorious sound ive ever heard. Also, the IS3 engine start truly brought tears to my eyes. Soviet engineering is truly incredible.

I am very interested in learning why that locomotive (EMD I'm guessing???) Kept knocking even after it sounded like all the cylinders sounded like they were firing.
Avoid cold start. It puts a lot of wear and tear on the engine. When the oil is cold, the oil pump has great difficulty pumping the oil. This results in most components in the engine not being lubricated.
I used to run my Toyota Hilux on vegetable oil. In the winter it always started fine, but if I let it idle after the last stage of glow plug heating then after some time it would start to fire rough and sound like miss firing. I always started driving and it fixed it. I think the heat produced from burning the diesel was less than the heat required to combust the diesel... Was my assumption. I don't know if it's correct
Oh yes. I owned only one car with turbodiesel engine. Maaan it used to be painful starting. But also great mileage and 3 months running without antifreeze - it wouldn`t overheat even in summer.
I captained commercial fishing vessels for over a decade your life depends on your diesel there's no describing the elation you feel when in an emergency your engine fires up and saves your life

That very first one I don't think you pre-heated the glow plugs before trying. My tractor makes that same noise and acts the same way but if I pre-heat the glow plugs it sounds a little rough but starts right up and nothing like that first video
I may be wrong, but I'd imagine it's just compressed air. Like a cartridge starter but with sustained air pressure? Maybe like the air starters on old truck engines, except actually pushing on the cylinders.

that EMD at 11:00 has some serious piston slap, that engine isn't gonna last much longer running like that.
Its a Russian diesel locomotive, I think it uses a copy of the 4-stroke Baldwin 608 diesels.
