The massive torque those big, low-revving diesels and steam engines made was incredible. For example, the 450 HP Fairbanks would be turning out about 7,900 lb-ft of torque.
Simply amazing! Big machines have fascinated me since I was a toddler. Knowing more about their provenance and application (or range of applications) adds to the joy of watching these grand old dames!
There is just one engine I was hoping to see. It was a 3 cylinder supercharged, two stroke Diesel engine made by GM built for a small track mounted military vehicle. I delivered one to a mine site as a rugged people mover. Awesome sounds!
The Car with the Number "23"(7:00 an 7:15) is not a Bentley-Packard. Its called "Brutus" and was build by the Technik Museum Sinsheim, Germany. Motor: 12-cylinder BMW aircraft engine.
The same bmw engine was used in the Schienenzeppelin prototype which was a propeller driven rail vehicle, which for obvious reasons did not see production. However it has held the land speed record for gasoline powered, and propeller driven rail vehicles since 1931, at 143mph.
Greta’s problem is with the petroleum industry that knew in the 1950’s what was going to happen and kept it hidden. It’s not with end users as we have zero control over what large corporations do.
My father-in-law worked at a nat gas pump station, they had 4 pumps with attached engines each engine had 2 pistons with 4 firing chambers they fired on both sides of the piston, maybe they turned 100 rpm at full throttle. The flywheel weighed over 2,000 pounds
The fellows doing the demo runs on those amazing aircraft piston engines are quite ballsy. I know they have the stubby contra-props on there to keep the engine from throwing itself clear across the lot, but still. That's a whole lot of oomph and boom to go firing up while sitting on what is essentially a over built garden wagon. But it is a very cool thing to experience, even if you're not the on the throttle. And God, I love radials. Would be even cooler to see an old rotary radial up and running.
11:55 - 12:15 The company was W. H. Allen (William Henry) not Arthur. I served my apprenticeship with the company and worked there in the 1980s. The S37 in the video originally worked in Welches Dam pumping station.
I honestly don’t know how I made that mistake, especially since I always double-check with Wikipedia! Thanks for pointing it out, though-I really appreciate it!
The 150HP Case steam traction engine the HP isn't spoken as a suffix. It's an abbreviation for horse power. Fairbanks Morse was building engines in the 1890s long before 1940s
As cool as this is, what is the purpose of this hobby? Is it trying to get the motor running? And once it does run, what do you do with it? Or once you shut it down, is it once again hard to start it again? (so it's more like an ''I concered this'' thing) --> (serious question)
If you were gonna show a Cat engine you should have shown a 1693 (dozer motor) as nicknamed by the truckers like myself that drove a truck equipped with one ....although not old but are rare this dsy and time not many left
Interesting engines, but poor quality video. Keeps jumping around all over the place! Also, the Cummins, Hino, Mitsubishi, Detroit Diesel and Cat engines are neither old or rare, although they are interesting.
I LOVE THESE MACHINES......SO GLAD THEY ARE PERSERVED. 😊

Thats insane and I love it!

Thanks, I appreciate that! I'm glad you found the video interesting!
Always a guy revving it by hand with a cig in his mouth... gotta love it
Old engine's make there own sound and unique power

Engineering is truly amazing
Damn look at these old Armored Core engines.
Greta Thunberg approve this video.
But who approves Greta?
😂😂😂
Wgaf
Greta’s problem is with the petroleum industry that knew in the 1950’s what was going to happen and kept it hidden. It’s not with end users as we have zero control over what large corporations do.
😂😂😂😂😂
Fantastici tutti! Questi si che sono capolavori di motori!
I always wonder how those Twin Propelers work 🤔 because is ingenious 😊😊
It's just gears in the hub of the props .
Look up how contra-rotating props work on a griffon
A lot of once in a lifetime look at some of these engines.

It doesn't take much to hold the engine,
I agree, those engines are definitely something to behold!
Some very nice old engines - but also quite a few either not rare, not old - or not starting, just shown running!
O som dos motores da Fairbanks Morse são tão satisfatorios de se ouvir
That National old gas engine sounds like me going up the stairs.
Cool video!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
15 mins, Skandia is a Swedish "Hot bulb" engine built in Lysekil, 2 stroke semi diesel engine 210 Hp/300 rpm
11:55 - 12:15 The company was W. H. Allen (William Henry) not Arthur. I served my apprenticeship with the company and worked there in the 1980s. The S37 in the video originally worked in Welches Dam pumping station.
I don't believe the RR Griffon was ever used in tanks or ships. The Merlin was used in tanks, under the name Meteor.
Not a minute in and I came here to say it. You beat me by an hour 🤣🤣🤣
I honestly don’t know how I made that mistake, especially since I always double-check with Wikipedia! Thanks for pointing it out, though-I really appreciate it!
How 🤔 is possible that many of these engines as far as I know didn't have pressurized lubrication and even so they lasted for decades 😳
I think that many Merlins got repurposed as Meteors. Some were salvaged from wrecked planes!
@@RedneckSpacemansome Meteors bore the scars.
Where is the engine on the long flatbed trailer?
These videos never show the thumbnail image
Click bait
I wish you would show that huge engine on the lowboy trailer as a teaser at the beginning of this video starting and running.
If any of those things "Ran Away" you have to evacuate the whole town. 😂
Was thinking the same. My god what a horror story that would be.
No, not really.
What was the Duvant 9cyl used for ?
Greta Thunberg give's the big thumbs up
The 150HP Case steam traction engine the HP isn't spoken as a suffix. It's an abbreviation for horse power.
Fairbanks Morse was building engines in the 1890s long before 1940s
Will one of the huge diesels fit in a Miata?
Any EPA agents seeing this would immediately start frothing from the mouth and go into convulsions 😂
Is there an enterprise engine still around.
The Enterprise had both her Engine Systems replaced Twice!! 🪐
Feel the Napier Deltic should have been here, a 36 piston 18 cylinder triangular apposed piston two stoke diesel.
That’d be interesting for sure
And sleeve valves
There's not a video of anyone trying to cold start a transit van
Please can someone make a edm/hardstyletrack from 8:46 ?! 😊
Now they want us to drive hybrid/fuel efficient vehicles, some of these motors use more fuel/carbon than ill use in my whole life
They're all good engines but why use clickbite.
HALL/SCOTT DEFENDER V-12
I wonder if the Late Pro-Wrestler, Big Scott Hall knew about the Hall Scott Engines!!
I ❤Detroit Diesel 12V
Does anyone know what the engine in the thumbnail is?
Clickbait
I'm sure there was at least 1 WW2 German tank engine shown but not recognised, why???

Because it’s freaking cool. 😂. Actually it’s just a show of what the old way of engineering was with out the technology we have today.
ASMR
Engine at 11.05 is a Continental, not a VW... VW has never made a radial engine.
If you were gonna show a Cat engine you should have shown a 1693 (dozer motor) as nicknamed by the truckers like myself that drove a truck equipped with one ....although not old but are rare this dsy and time not many left
Ya, 12.8 L
The one I want next is 15.3 L of I-6 needs 45 Liters of oil for it.
Interesting engines, but poor quality video. Keeps jumping around all over the place! Also, the Cummins, Hino, Mitsubishi, Detroit Diesel and Cat engines are neither old or rare, although they are interesting.
And the narrator kept confusing horse power with capacity.
Greta ist angry...🤨😄
Greta Thumbdrive?
Interesting engines
Spoilt by the ingroant comtery .
Greta Thunberg have left the chat
UA-cams ads are freaking stupid. 7 mins in... Fifth ad.. why i bother idfk
There are ways to avoid that...
Pay for a subscription. No ads.
contre rotation .. un pas convergent , un pas divergent ..dans la marine duo prop .
Greta's not going to be happy about this.
Greta Pipsqueak? Not happy unless she has media attention.
Only diesels almost...😮💨
wtfdib wasting my time
😑
I hate them videos post clickbait and what you clicked on the whole thing to actually even see isn't even there to be seen
Music ruins vid
I down-rated this video because of the dubbed in stupid music.
Can you explain more about what music annoyed you? In which parts? I will rewatch the video and make sure to improve in my next similar video.
@techonly01 There are several parts with music in the video. In some parts, the music can be heard over the sound of the engines.
@@techonly01 I agree with CNNW. part of the attraction is the sound of the engine running, music distracts from the sound.
Mmmmm. 12 v 149
LAWD FADDA....... Don't let Justine Trudeau see this video. He will have a conniption for sure! 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Edgy take.
He’s on a jet somewhere preaching about the climate crisis
He will tax all the engines! 😂.
😮⁷
