I get why you reached for Lot 40 for the comparison, but it's a bit of an odd one nonetheless. Lot 40 is 100% copper pot rye. G&W Eleven Souls has five different grains (some malted and unmalted), copper pot and column still, and multiple types of casks. Different beasts.
I had the privilege of sitting in a class with Dr. Don Livermore at the Whiskey Fest in San Francisco... it was definitely for the more geeky whisky nerd. We also tasted 6 whiskies including the legendary Lot 40 Cask Strength which is not sold in the USA BUT... a bottle managed to somehow magically appear at my house thanks to a couple fellow whisky tubers in Canada.
Got to join in on a masterclass by Dr Don a while back and listening to him talk about how to pull different notes out of a barrel was crazy interesting, and drinking the about to be released new version of the Lot 40 CS proved to me he knows wtf he's going, since he took 100% rye whiskey and made it taste like melted french vanilla ice cream.... which was crazy to me, but I can't wait to get a bottle.

Love the show and I am a magnificent bastard I recently on Rex’s recommendation even though I am I Islay Scotch man , bought the red breast 12 and was slightly disappointed although it was good I could not find the honey the butter or the biscuit flavors in the whiskey and I am a southern boy and biscuits gravy honey and butter are a staple I could not find any of that in this whiskey what am I missing?thanks
In the pronunciation, Gooderham, drop the h. Like, Gooder-uhm. Also, the history/story behind its naming is interesting. The founder, on his immigration to Canada, adopted 11 orphans. This run is thusly named. Also worth trying is 40 Creek. And if you can ever get one, Pike Creek 10 year old finished in port barrels. Kicks the rum barrel finished Pike Creek right in the bunghole.
Tony Lastname had the chance to try the G&W 49 Wellington, Lot No. 40 CS aaand the Pike Creek 21yr old Olorosso Cask finished at the Spirit of Toronto spirits festival last May. The PC21 was an absolute revelation to what Canadian Whisky could achieve. Fabulous. The G&W49 superb and the Lot 40 CS lived up to its reputation. Wow. Dr. Livermore was presenting the tasting and his brief history of Canadian Whisky and its ties to America was fascinating. The Gooder’um story is a good one for sure, and is at the very beginning of our whisky history.

As a former 10 year military guy /veteran, I've always had short hair, but on second viewing, I have been inspired to grow out a glorious silver mane just so I can have, nay surpass, Rex's "warrior's topknot". I mean, at least I've actually been to Japan. ... Wife might kill me though.
One remix I like more than the original... oddly: Pet Shop Boys' remix of Bowie's 'Hallo Spaceboy' from 1995's 'Outside' album. Only a touch, because the original is still pretty sweet - very experimental album for Bowie, produced with Eno. Check it!
@Bradleclerc, you have to tell me where you find your whiskies. I usually buy more in Gatineau due to my SAQ points card but will have no problem hitting up some LCBOs.
It sounds like you want me to delve into some more deep seated issues the two of you have rather then selecting the "low hanging fruit". Challenge accepted.
Well, if you ever tasted an American penny, it has a somewhat similar taste.. Assuming Daniel tastes his pocket change more frequently than he does drink blood? Also, I just found out that pennys were 95ish% copper and 4% zinc, and now it's 97ish% zinc and 2% copper, a complete reversal, so if you are going to try it, don't use new pennies.
Speaking of vodka, if I was to pour some into a barrel and age it, would it then technically be classed as a whisky or would it just be wood aged vodka? Anything that can be added to increase the whisky flavour?
I'm guessing it would depend on how the vodka is made, Whiskey is made from grains (corn, rye, malted barley) but vodka can be made from a lot of things, potatoes, molasses (sugar cane), etc.. I'm sure there's a lot of other things, and laws which clearly seperate them into two different categories, but I'm no vodkalogist
In the US at least, vodka has to be distilled to 95% alcohol or above which is considered neutral spirit, the whiskey classification requires distillation below 95%, so even if you wood aged a grain based vodka it would never be considered whiskey according to US law.
Thirst! But also copper in your blood?!?! I always knew Daniel was different but I think most of us can say our blood contains iron. Copper?!?! He must’ve transcended from us mere mortals into a whiskey god.
Although both are very good I definitely favour the lot 40 because the eleven souls is 2.5x the price in Ontario

I enjoyed the Eleven Souls. Solid stuff.

Probably due to the french oak casks he used.
My name is John Verstraete. AND I WANT MY BACK RUB.
No, I'm John Verstraete and I want my back Rub! (Think Spartacus)
pretty sure Rex would give any guy a backrub. He's like the Joe Biden of Whisky.
@@6point5 Its MINE! Im James Worts!
Love for Canadian whiskey two days running. Well done boys.🇨🇦
Cool to see a couple of good Canadian whiskies enjoyed on your channel. Cheers!

Are you suggesting a bun-over might look better than a comb-over? Doubtful. Set your head free, man.
"Taste of blood" Daniel is a serial killer confirmed.
Manson without the swastika tat. I can see it.
Also, the warrior's top knot comment... that's why, man. That's WHY.

Awesome video! The more reasonably priced G&W (four grains) is good as well.

It really is such a fantastic story. I think the G&W chapter in Davin deKergommeaux's Canadian Whisky Handbook was my favourite.

11 different barrels and different distillations I was expecting Daniel to say there's 11 different herbs and spices.
Daniel, the metallic taste in blood is iron, not copper

"Dark for a Canadian" Yes, Canadians do tend to be pale. Looked all over the net, can;t find a fake clip-on man-bun.
I like how daniels example is "The taste of blood" when "taste of pennies" infers the same thing
That dad bod tho
Haha!! He relies on his "Handy Hobbit Height Helper" for that top shelf! 🤣😂🤣😂
No "here's to" out? Shenanigan in its place? That was a tribe ending!
Thank you for making me smile while teaching me about whiskey.
