  • Gooderham & Worts Four Grain Whisky is a long lived Canadian whisky based off the original recipe from the early 1800s! We talk a bit about the history of the brand, this specific whisky, and if I think this is worth your money or not.

    Thanks for the review. I agree, "it's fine". Also, you are spot on when you say for the same price or a few $ more, you can get the better, Forty Creek. The Double Barrel is really good. Thanks again.

    After watching your review and letting my bottle air out for a couple of months, I really enjoy the complexity of this whisky. I think your smelling note of cola helped me identify it and opened my mind.

    I live a few blocks away from the old distillery. It's actually been converted over into an entire district of shops, condos and restaurants called "The Distillery District". Also, the ABV is an Easter egg in reference to the address of one of the old tank houses on Mill St. here in Toronto.

    I had a bottle of the four grain a while back. It’s on my list to rebuy. It had a very nice cinnamon-lemon candy note on the finish. I thought it was much better than the Forty Creek which is sickeningly sweet to me. I agree that it is not the most complex whiskey, but one that is very enjoyable. Glad we have different palates or it would be a boring world.

    There's a store near me in Southeastern Massachusetts that is selling a bundle of this Gooderham & Worts Four Grain and Pike Creek Whisky 10 Year Old Double Barrel Rum Barrel Finished for only $29.99. At that price, I'm intrigued.

    Excellent balanced review. I tried it and was hoping it either smelled good or tasted good and it hit neither note so I voted for ignore it. I had high hopes, but it let me down.

    canadian whisky began as wheat whisky that the millers would produce. rye was added later as immigrants from germany/the netherlands/etc. arrived and canadian blended whisky was known as 'rye' whisky forevermore. it'll be wheat. corn couldn't be grown in the canadian climate until new strains were developed after WWII.

    I would assume wheat, but I think it's good to specify what it is, especially if the bottle is advertising that it's 4 grains.

    Fair review. Do I carry it in my bar? Yes. It's more of an easy drinker/summertime pour for me. IMO it's the closest a Canadian whisky came come to a bourbon. I am curious as to whether or not you get that distinctive yeasty Canadian taste like you do other common Canadian whiskies. OK let's nerd out. From the research I did from an online class by J.P. Wisers brand ambassador Dave Mitton G&W has 7 different distillates. Corn Double-Column New American Barrels. Barley Pot/Column New American Barrels. Barley Single-Column Once-Used Bourbon Barrels. Rye Pot/Column New American Barrels. Rye Single-Column Once-Used Bourbon Barrels. Wheat Single-Column New American Barrels. Wheat Pot/Column New American Barrels. Phew! It seems like a bunch of work for an okay whisky IMO but that's how it's done up here. Just like most Canadian whiskies I wish it were a bit stronger and little bit more memorable but sometimes you have to taste some bottom shelf stock to appreciate the better eye level shelf stock. Thanks for the Canadian content. BTW Portland Cocktail Week's video "Canadian Whisky: Blended Whisky and Rye Whisk(e)y" is the video I watched to find out the info on Gooderham & Worts.

      Thanks, always good to have more info. Especially so much! That IS helpful. It's tough to justify doing more Canadian whiskies... this is my worst viewed video in multiple years. Just no love for Canada over here I suppose :(

      @@TheWhiskeyDictionary it's for the best that you stop reviewing canadian whisky, you can't get the good stuff and you're mind is made up anyway. you certainly wouldn't want to review the single malts being made. they're so bad the scottish whisky society keeps suing canadian distilleries - yuck, terrible stuff. canada sucks USA#1.

    Terrific video Bill but this has never been whisky that I enjoy. I love 40 and I adore Canadian Club 40 year old which is exquisite but Gooderham and aWorts’ expressions always leave me wanting and disappointed. I know some ppl who enjoy them. Whisky Neighbour enjoys them I think. Not a fan but interesting video! Cheers!

    My guess for a 4th grain would have been wheat. I found a 4 grain Oak and Eden at a store and am currently enjoying it. Their 4th grain is wheat. Any bourbon that uses something instead of or in addition to rye and barley always seems to be wheat. Why can’t I even think of another grain that is commonly used? What were YOU thinking of as a 4th grain?

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  5 місяців тому

      I was thinking wheat for sure, but some others that people could play with would be oat, rice, even quinoa!

    4 grain has an "odd" 4th grain enough that I never assume anything in particular

  • @DileepB
    @DileepB 5 місяців тому

    yes, wheat would be the most likely 4th grain, but I would not be surprised if it was rice.

    P.S. For my palette I am never a sweet fan in whisky. G and W always tastes too sweet for me.
