- Watch me make a wafer iron from scratch. It is used to make rolled wafers, rullrån, as we call them in Sweden. This utensil is traditionally made from cast iron, but I use a different technique... I hope you like it.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Wafer recipe:
100 g butter (melted)
1,5 dl sugar
1 tsp vanilla sugar
3 dl wheat flour
2 dl water

Nothing beats Torbjorn making kitchen utensils and immediately using them and immediately eating what he cooked
Merry Christmas!
And it all works😀👌 Amazing in every way😀
:) Ha ha, Merry Christmas!
This waffle iron will last for ages and can be passed down through the generations! I have one that’s roughly 145 years old and it’s been used at least once a week since it’s been in the family.
It's not a waffle iron, it's like a Norwegian Krumkake iron. I imagine the Swedes have a different name for it. My mother made these for us every Christmas with a special cast iron mold. Rolled up on a small conical wood rolling pin while they are hot. Fill them with whipped cream (flavored with Baileys or Grand Marnier), cherry on top. Oh god they are good. My sister still makes them every year. Thanks for the outstanding video, Torbjorn.
@@silicon.alchemist Italians have something that looks the same called pizzelle, an anise flavored wafer cookie. I wonder if they all had one origin and were traded. The design match between the different irons is perfect.
I said to myself, "surely he's not going to engrave that pattern by hand?" Needless to say...
Another triumph. God jul, Mr. A!
Was totally expecting that setup to be a precursor to some variety of acid etching the pattern in.
That's what I thought. That's a *_LOT_* of meticulous work! If I was doing that, I would get three quarters of the way, and there would be a major "Oops!" moment.
Fastest 27 minutes ever. You sir have an awesome talent.
Thanks 👍
Wafers with the TA logo on them are scientifically proven to taste better.
Backwards it says ÅT in Swedish, 'ate' in English 😉😋
Alone, in the dark, like a good Norseman.
Facts
100 percent true
And the double blind peer reviewers: I heard you, you are having seconds, PUT THAT BACK!
It's nice to see that cats are consistently curious in all households, at least when it comes to food preparation. =D
He he, yes food is on their mind all the time....
So sweet of you to bring kitty up to see and sniff!
Pure craftsmanship, no chat, no rubbish background 'music'. Beautiful... Thank you Torbjörn!
this video is the equivalent of watching a fireplace crackle and pop. or an aquarium full of fish, or a lava-lamp.
there's this serene sense of satisfaction and calm.
Between your high level of skill set and your small bits of comedy... truly inspiring and enjoyable to watch. Thank you for the videos, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Florida, USA.
:) Thanks David! Merry Christmas from Sweden!
Absolutely stunning. You create so many wonderful items, but this is truly a legacy item. Your children and grandchildren will treasure it for many many generations. You are such a pleasure to watch. Thank you Torbjorn for taking the time to share with all of us. The burr work was nerve-wracking to watch. Your patience is second only to Neil Pask. Keep on and Keep warm.
Thank you so much!
It’s always nice to see a blacksmith that didn’t die out in the pandemic
The part where he showed his face eyeballing the curve forging before the lathe was what really made this for me
Nice steady hand with the rotary tool. An amazing project.
Thanks John! Yes it was scary in the beginning, but after a while you develop a method of bracing and limit movement to more or less one direction and rotate the work which makes it much easier. I hope you get a fantastic Christmas along with your family!
Merry Christmas Torbjörn! Love the waffle iron and thoroughly enjoyed the video! :)
Neil, that warms my heart! Thank you and have a fantastic new year!!

Best Cooking and Gardening channel ever!
I like your approach to smithing, cats and drinking.😁
Saw the thumbnail and went "oh god, he's going to engrave that pattern by hand, isn't he?" Well, wasn't too far off.
Outstanding work as always.
He's scribing a line, he's checking it twice... :) What a beautiful (and probably delicious) piece of work. And I love that the blacksmith strolls by the guys installing solar panels as he's picking out stock for such an artisanal and traditional object. Your vibes are immaculate.
Good Lord. I can't believe you engraved that by hand! Such patience!
Forge and cooking! A new tool is born for sharing the most beautiful gift, food! :)
Руки у вас золотые...берегите их , не убирайте стружку с токарного станка РУКАМИ ❗
:)
Absolutely splendid. I love knowing traditional things are still being remembered. Well done.
not only does that look delicious, but your cat is adorable as well
This whole process shows perfectly why those Irons have this specific look and Form. It just wouldn't work propperly in any other way! Well done ,Sir. That was fun to watch. Thanks for the upload, much aprechiated. Greetings from Germany sends CarpenterBea
Watching your creations come to life is so very therapeutic. Thank you for taking the time to share your craftsmanship with us.
Merry Christmas for you Torb! And for everyone who reads this.🎄
We call them "Isernkoken" in northern Germany and my Grandma stil makes them she just turned 88, well she has an electric iron. I liked this video imidiatly. Old craftmanship is very facinating to me combined with modern, thank you for sharing.
Nice, thanks!
Thunder bear. A true craftsman, and a well earned Christmas
I love this iron, so full of soul. Here is a traditional recipe from my Grandmother. They were serving Jønnbrød (Iron bread) instead of thin bread at special events, like Christmas
3 dl Thick cream
1,5 dl cold water
30 g of sugar
0,5 teaspoon of Cardemum
1,5 dl Wheat flour
Steak wafers until fully brown, and lay flat to cool.
Merry Christmas Torbjörn!
Cool, thanks!
Hi, I wanted to make this batter from your recipe. I apologize I don't know what the dl is, is it tablespoon? Thanks!!
@@saturnia1146 Deciliter = 0.1 Liter (about half a cup)
Hi! With american measurement it would be:
10 Oz Thick cream
5 Oz cold water
30 g / 2 tablespoons of sugar
0,5 teaspoon of Cardemum
5 Oz Wheat flour
this is the first video of a Machinist/metal worker using a respirator or any sort of mask filter. thank you sir o7
WE COULD HEAR THE CRUNCH FROM ACROSS THE ROOM!🤤🤤🤤🤤
Another great video! And now I’m hungry thanks for that! One small safety consideration, never use your hand to remove the long stringy award from the lathe, especially while the chuck is spinning, forge up a hook for pulling them away in case they get caught by the chuck, they could take your fingers or at the very least leave you with a nasty cut.
Sorry about the rant, I hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday!
Probably a good idea! Thanks and Merry Christmas!
The entire time I was thinking to myself, those grooves aren't going to be deep enough for waffles! Then I re-read the title and it all made sense. Great work as always! I always enjoy your level of craftsmanship
lol i did the same thing till i read your comment 😅
Blacksmith, woodworker, mason, horticulturalist, naturalist, UA-camr, occasional Berserkr and now pastry chef . . . Torbjorn, you're truly a Renaissance man!
:) Thanks!
I loved it when you answered the cat and let him sniff!
Every time I see Torbjorn make or use something, I think how can this man be any more legendary? And BOOM! He steps it up a level!
:) Thanks
What a beautiful piece. Thank you and God Jul !
I'm fascinated watching you create this beautiful utensil. I have inherited one of these from my Norwegian grandmother who made krumkake for holidays. Now I'll be trying your recipe. Thanks.
Nice!
Thanks for sharing and showing us that black smithing is not all about knives blessings to all
Merry Christmas! Loved the humour in this video!
🔥🔥🔥 Greetings from Wisconsin! This brings back memories of my childhood and the Norwegian Krumkake we would make each year for celebrations and the holidays. Thank you for showing how the iron is made.
Using the furnace to apply a seasoning coat with canola oil was pretty clever.
13:47 thought I was watching Alec Steele for a moment, half expecting the gold inlay to come up next! Loved this. Merry Christmas
Ha ha, no gold here yet.... Merry Christmas!
My dad and I make something similar occasionally for special events. We call them Pazelles (Italian) but they look very similar to what you're making. Incredibly good with some ice cream, chocolate, fruit or whipped cream inside!
Lovely work on the iron there! Love your videos as always. Merry Christmas!
Very cool! Merry Christmas!
WOW! Super cool meticulous craftsmanship!
Thanks!
The Legend has it there's no thing in a world that Torbjörn couldn't forge...
:)
This is splendid! I'm American, and part of my heritage is Norwegian. I have a traditional Norwegian utensil of this type, made by Jotul. My grandmother called the product krumkakke, and was rolled on a tapered roller instead of a straight one, so they would slip off the form easier. My recipe is similar to yours, but included eggs in the batter. As you say, the traditional utensil is made from cast iron. Mine has a separate ring, made to fit over a burner on a wood stove, but it works very well on my glass stove top. (I have an aluminum foil layer on the stove ring, to protect the glass stove top and it works very well) My iron is seasoned nicely and there is enough butter in the recipe that I do not have to oil the surfaces for each krumkakke I make. I can make and roll one every minute, when the temperature is right. Your skills are wonderful, and you have made a beautiful tool! Thank you for this video!
Nice! Thank you!
Truly superb! Merry Christmas to you and your family, Torbjörn! Thanks so much for all your videos this year, they have all been amazing, and are always something to very much look forward to! Cheers!
The cat surveying the operations made my day
Surveying is the right word... they keep doing that, don't they?! Food is the only thing on their minds it seems, at least at this time of the year.
Homemade rullrån on a whole different level
What a talented person. I always enjoy your projects no matter what they are. Thank You so much sir. Not only a talented blacksmith, camera man, editor ...
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Have a Happy and Healthy new year my friend.
Merry Christmas Robert!!
I agree 100%.
Great use of the laser, acid etching through a resist might work well too if you get sick of engraving
All the best for new year and xmas
I was thinking, you should have also put a touch mark on the side that has the engraved one. That way you'll know which way is right when you roll them so it's on the outside of the wafer.
Very beautiful work. Makes me miss the holidays with my mother when she would make these for us.
When you redo it, place the logo at the top so it is still visible once rolled! Lol
This is a really nice and awesome waffle maker.
Thumbs up for the engraving.
Was expecting it to be cooked over open fire but induction makes it nice and controlled!
Absolutely fantastic. Seriously impressive with how many tools and different skills you needed to complete this project.
Thanks Brett. Merry Christmas!
It's ever a great surprise to see new videos by you, Torbjörn! The waffle iron is done gracefully with elegance, precision and with love that shines through the video. I admire you so much, I don't have such patience to do my blacksmithing)). The time spent to make the video is endles! Always appreciate the quality of it.
P.S. Happy New Year to you and all you family. I wish new aims to you and, of course, to attain them fully! Be healthy and happy ever. Great hello from Russia!
Thank you so much!
You went for the BIG mug... Fine sir, you earned it indeed!
Hi.
For these tubes, also whipped cream. The taste of my childhood.
My favourite blacksmith cooking show, Merry Christmas Torbjorn and family.
Очень уважаю этого мастера! Настоящий волшебник! Любое его изделие-это произведение искусства.
очень согласен! Удачных проектов ему в новом году....👍

Santa deserves a treat merry Christmas
Good work I'm Shure the engraving took more patience than I could muster up
Fantastic! We always know we'll be treated to seeing you use the device you make, and it's always tastefully done. Merry Christmas Torbjörn!!
Thank you for sharing with us your excellent smithing videos. Merry Christmas to you and your family Mr. Ahman!
There is not another video on youtube that has closed out the 2022 year with a better video than this one! Thank you and Merry Christmas to you
Torbjörn Åhman and your family!
Wow, thank you! Merry Christmas!
Seeing the new tools used makes me appreciate the craft more
Our ancestor really were tough
You know a person has a good heart when they let their cat sniff what they're doing.
Thanks for good works for a year! Merry christmas Torbjorn, and everyone!
Thanks, you too!
Thanks for the Christmas video, excellent as always 👍
I have my Grandmother's Krumkake iron. She bought it from a small factory near here. (Nordicware)
I make Krumkakes every Christmas and we fill them with whipped cream.
Torbjörn Åhman has amazing skills to make such a beautiful wafer iron.
Pizzelle! Best one I've ever seen.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. I’ve enjoyed watching your craftsmanship and sharing it with other makers here in the USA. Continued success in the new year!
Thanks Joe!
Hello from NYC! And thanks for sharing your amazing skills with all of us! This wafer iron is out of this world! I loved watching the whole video and can’t wait to watch more of your videos! And it was so cute when your kitty is sitting near you when you started making the wafers! Almost like “are you making some for me too?” 😂
Plus thanks for the recipe!
God bless you and hope you have a wonderful year! 🙏🏼❤️
Thank you so much!
I was more impressed with the mug then the waffle iron Merry Christmas thumbs-up. The mug impressed me so much I subscribed
Ha ha!
Oh, me oh my... After choosing the two pieces, then firing them, then shaping the hinge, and then, THEN to patiently inscribe the design. Truly, there aren't enough adjectives, there aren't enough words of praise for this fine work of art.
Thank you for allowing us to watch.
Thank you Thomas!
I always look forward to your Christmas videos. You and your family always make the best looking foods.
GOD JUL!
The first blacksmith "cheff" I know!!!!. Feliz Navidad from Mendoza, Argentina
You oughta be getting close to having a great Christmas playlist, eh?
We watched this over dinner. My wife was so impressed at the beautiful utensil you created. I think you have a new fan. 😅 We're looking forward to trying our own version of rullrån soon.
Finally, God jul! Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Ha ha, cool! Good luck and Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Torbjorn! gorgeous iron! loved the whole build start to finish, especially that gorgeous pattern!
Thanks Sam!
Cool, it can make icecream cones too. I bet those wafer cookies would be really good filled with whipped cream.
Excellent! When I saw you laser the pattern on the face I thought you might be setting up to etch of engrave the pattern. Then watching you engrave it manually with only a Dremel tool I was amazed. That is a lot of work. Nice craftsmanship.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and your family 🎉❤
Totally awesome vid - 10*. Krumkake with gluwine. Add some sweet cream and lingonberry sauce with the krumkake - and spice up the hot gluwine with wassail and some booze - and one can get their party on !!! Happy Happy Merry Merry Happy Happy Torbjorn !!!
Sounds great! Merry Christmas!
I always want to emigrate to Sweden whenever I visit this channel :D
While I am typically a Belgun waffle man myself there are few waffles I've ever turned down. Happy Våffeldagen!
Glædelig jul fra Danmark, jeg elsker at se dine videoer! :)
Tack!
This was such an incredible video! Merry Christmas to you and yours. I hope 2023 is a great year for you.
Thanks! Merry Christmas
Beautiful wafle iron. A hug (from Argentina)
That laser-engraving technique looks like it could lend itself very well to etching as well.
Forging and food in the same video….👍. Outstanding pattern, looks like something that would definitely make the wafers taste better, I was “drooling “ by the end of the video. Have a wonderful time with your family and friends, (and we can’t forget puss) this Christmas. Thanks for all the great videos you’ve given us this year, I look forward with enthusiasm for each new edition. Love to meet you one day. Regards from your friend Down Under.
Thanks Outback! Merry Christmas!! Have you managed to dress the palm tree yet? :) Seriously though... do you even have Christmas trees like we on the northern hemisphere?
@@torbjornahman Yep, plastic ones !😂🤣😜. Perhaps you could forge us a steel Christmas tree!! Seriously, as most Aussies are of British or European decent we follow all the traditional Christmas customs, Santa etc, but we have added a few new customs of our own. Barbecues, swimming, outside activities as there’s no snow. The old Southern Hemisphere, everything’s back the front down here you know 🤪.
Forgot to mention, everyone plays cricket in the backyard on Christmas Day, you know all about cricket don’t you? They play it in Sweden don’t they? When you come out and visit me I’ll teach you all about the wonderful game of cricket!!👌
@@outbackladas Cool, well, I can't say for sure but I think there are a few enthusiasts, there always are :) Probably not playing on Christmas day though....
God Jul 🎄Så himla kul film 👍🏻
Tack! God Jul
Adorable! When the big mug came out at the end, I LOLed
Merry Christmas to you and all the 🌎.
Absolutely fantastic as expected! Thank you for entertaining this old man for all this time. I wish the very best of health and happiness to Mr Åhman, his family, and everyone watching. Fantastic holidays!
Thank you Wesley! Merry Christmas!
Remember watching my Bestemor make these when I was a boy. Of course, her iron wasn't nearly as fine or personalized as yours. Merry Christmas, Thunder Bear.🎄☃🎉
You could engrave the logo upside-down at the top of the iron, so that it is legible along the finished wafer after rolling. I mean, all that hard work goes unnoticed as the logo just gets rolled up and unseen in the finished product.
I DO love your skills!
How dare you drop a compelling video while I'm getting ready for bed! Curse the time difference!
:) Sorry! Merry Christmas anyway!
