  • In this video I will try to answer a very common question which I have been getting frequently. Is the Rogue Echo Bike good for long steady rides averaging 30+ minutes? The short answer is Yes! The rider has full control over the intensity generated, however the ride will never be as comfortable as a road bike or a standard stationary bike since the arms are not stationary. In this video I run through 3 separate tests at 3 different intensities, easy, medium or moderate and hard. For each test I ride the bike for a full 1 minute and at the end I record the average speed, watts, cadence or RPM's and total calories burned. I repeat this process for all three tests. Hopefully this video helps answer this question and therefore you feel more confident whether or not this bike is right for you.

    I’ve done marathon sessions on my Airdyne numerous times ranging from 30-90 mins. Alternating from slow and steady to a short sprint. Burned between 900-1200 calories depending on time. Excellent piece of cardio equipment.

      How good is it? My resting heart rate has plummeted and other pieces of cardio equipment feel like a breeze. Also easy on the joints.

    Thanks for clearing up the concern about Can you use the bike easily or in a somewhat easy level for a beginner. Some other UA-camr said the bike had the rider go Hard all the time ! No easy riding. Thanks again! 👍

    I used a schwin basic airdyne the gold model back in the 80's when I started out with biking, I loved it back then. It helped me out a lot with early bike success. I felt confident when lining up at the start line. Now 40 years later I just bought a Schwin Airdyne pro, I am hoping to use it to get back in bike shape and lose weight I have gained in the past year. I will be doing long rides hour plus at various levels as well as hiit test. many of the videos I see on you tube show well fit men and women using the bike and recommend using it for short periods of time. The bike cost a lot which is fine and will make me use a lot more then if I bought something cheap. Anyway I am sure for all the outstanding trainers out there they will tell me I am doing it wrong. They might be correct. Anyway I figure using it anyway is better then not doing anything. Good Luck out there

    To add my experience... i do zone two for an hour on the air bike. Says I burn 800cals. It does work, but the seat sucks ass the longer you go and cuts bloodflow for me. I got a better seat and do 10 mins on 1 min high knees off the bike.

    Thanks for video. I was looking to replace my elliptical with similar motion exercise, and I this this bike would be great. As unfortunately for some reason elliptical cause me knee pain. Maybe because of fixed movements, where as on bikes never had knee problem

    Thanks for the video. Well done. Schwinn introduced the Airdyne in 1978, which pre-dates by decades its use as a HIIT machine, in fact, pre-dating by decades the emergence of HIIT as a fitness method.

      Great often overlooked point! For those saying AirDyne is designed for HIIT and not zone 2 training, while it might be true they can be perfect for that purpose, they obviously were not designed for that style. More for a good all around upper and lower body workout as opposed to the standard stationary bike that worked legs only. Very versatile piece of equipment! I remember Paul Harvey advertising them in the 80s.

    got mine this past week. Shipped within 24 hours. on saturday i did 100 miles for 4 x 25 mile sets - i had approx 450 minutes on the bike. My ass was sore. The bike is a beast and i havent rode it since. Can confirm also its fine long distance.

    I do 500 cals straight quite frequently. Best time is 28:45. Also do slower rides 30/45 mins on rest days. It get used properly on lifting days tho.

    This is helpful, as I’m trying to decide if I should get an assault bike for longer zone 2 cardio cross training sessions. I know a lot of different machines and ways to get long zone 2 cardio sessions, my biggest question is was the assault bike a TOLERABLE way to do a 30 minute cardio session. Because if I don’t like it, I’m not going to want to do it. Did you find the sessions tolerable/enjoyable? Or would it be something you loathe doing? For me, the rowing machine is a great workout, but I do not enjoy it therefore I don’t do it very often, and it would be a piece of equipment I wouldn’t buy because of that. Thanks!

    Quick question, have you noticed any slight side-to-side 'play' in the left handle of the Rogue bike?
    My right handle is super sturdy and feels rigid and tight (good thing) but the left hand whilst good, has this slight side wiggle or feel of "looseness". It doesn't have when going back-and-forth though.

    Compared to my old Schwinn Airdyne, the handles on the echo are too thick, too hard , and angle too sharply. Even if I could find foam handle covers, it would make the handles even thicker. As an older person, I find that the handles aggravate joint pain in my wrists and knuckles. The old Airdyne I used to use had a gentle curve to the handles that seemed more ergonomic and was easier on the hands. Looking at the assault bike range - I think the handles are more ergonomic

      try assault bike elite. it's very ergonomic on the wrists with it's curved handles.

      I have the Schwinn Evo Comp. It’s about 20 y/o and still doing fine. The updated similar model is the AD6. I think it’s more affordable than the echo bike. I would stick with Schwinn , personally. They are the originators of the air bike and have been at it for decades now. Just my opinion

    Any thoughts on arm heights for taller people? Seems like they should be adjustable, like the seat. Tall folks are moving the arms back and forth almost to their hip crease. Seems much lower than say the path of a punch or a press movement. Is that ergonomically correct?

      I feel that this bike is suitable for tall people. You are able to adjust the seat height and also distance between seat and arms which should avoid the arms from hitting the hips.

    I do 60 minutes at a cadence of 40 covering a distance of 15 miles at a speed of 16 mph burning 280 calories. I wish I could show you via my pictures of the read outs but was wondering if that is good progress. Thanks

      I did 283 calories in 20 minutes and im not in amazing shape.
      Unless youre much older, untrained or recovering from an injury you can push harder.

    Thank you for your video I have a question since you're the only one so far that I've seen that tested these for longer workouts. I can't win the lottery but as a cyclist and weightlifter I've managed to acquire an extensive DVT in my right leg from my ankle to my hip. So I'm looking for something that I can substitute in for my cardio workouts and I was considering one of these style fan bicycles that I can concentrate more with upper body than lower. I'm not holding you to this but what do you think of this type of investment for that type of cardio workout with the situation I'm now in until I get this all cleared up. I've tried ellipticals and I've tried rowing but both seem to still cause too much back pressure through the DVT in my right leg. I look forward to your input and again I'm just looking for your opinion since you have one thank you.

      I would definitely consult with a doctor first just to be safe. I would suggest first trying out any type of bike first to see if that causes any discomfort. If so than this bike may not be a good option. That said, if you are comfortable while cycling and just want something that you can alternate between upper and lower body than this may be a good choice. You can definitely ease off the pedals and use your arms as you choose which is great. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Good luck!

      @@untappedstrength7548 thanks for the response yeah I'm looking for something that I can do more upper body I really can't do anything with my right leg at the moment. I tried an elliptical and it puts too much pressure on my leg and a rowing machine is just too big for my house. I'll see if I can go to a couple sporting good stores and try some out and see how they feel thanks for your time and input. Probably one of the most frustrating things about this DVT is there's no information as far as how long it takes to heal and rehab for somebody who is athletic. Most of the stuff is just try to go for a 15 minute walk three times a week. Enjoy your videos look forward to watching more of your adventures.

    I ordered the exercise bike on January 7th and it arrived on February 12th. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzg0clhbtRf2gGxPkVETFKJJKGqdsorQu The box must have been tossed around quite a bit because one whole side of the styrofoam was destroyed, and the other side foam was cracked. The Two zip ties holding the handlebars had broken loose and handlebars were loose in the box. There are two small holes in the foam on the right side of the handlebars, I guess from rolling around inside the box. Assembly was straight forward and easy. I am 6 ft 5 in 220 lb and the handlebars and seating positions fully adjustable and work great, I'm getting full leg extension. The noise level is very, very low and acceptable. The adjustment knob for the pressure on the flywheel works well also. The exercise bike is very well made, sturdy and easy move around. This is my first exercise bike and will keep me in shape over the winter. Update 3/19/21: when removing the sticker from the wheel, make sure you remove any sticker glue also. I thought mine was clean but I was getting a slight noise from the glue. Once cleaned off, its super quite. Also the monitor didn't work, tracked it down to the pickup device wasn't in the hole. Once I moved in the hole, it works fine. Do NOT put it in until it touches or it will damage the pickup.

    I'm really interested in an air bike, as form of cross training, but as a cyclist (mountain and gravel), I wonder how the geometry of the bike, such as this Echo compares. I've never tried one, but from the videos, it appears the Q factor is larger, cranks are shorter and seat doesn't have a tilt option, so pedaling "may" be way off what one is used to on standard bikes.

      It has tons of adjustments but the geometry is always going to be different from a traditional bike.

      I can tell you from experience this is a sleeper for getting results for traditional bike riding. Just get on it and ride. Do good long ride at zone 2 and also some sprint intervals. Don’t over think training like a lot of bicyclist do.

    I have an AD7 and an Echo bike. I did 30 minute rides on both, for me, just my experience between the two bikes, the echo bike is more stable and doesn't have a lot of play in the arms, pedals, doesn't wobble, etc, it's quiet. But the resistance didn't feel as heavy as the AD7. The resistance on the Echo bike just felt so light to me that in order to get a decent work out, I would have to give 100% max effort to feel any type of workout.The AD7 felt like I didn't have to apply full max effort to get a good workout. But the AD7 had play in the arms and it did squeak a bit at first use. For example, after 30 minutes per the AD7 display I would be around 300+/- calories, whereas when i finished a 30 minute ride on the echo bike, per the display, I would be around 170 to maybe 200 calories. Just my experience.

      How much noise does the AD7 make if you are doing steady state threshold at around 160 heart rate? What about max effort?

      @@bmp713 I don’t have an actual way to measure the decibels of how loud the bike is but if you have ridden a fan bike before then you may have an idea. In my opinion, the AD7 is no louder than the echo bike and usually when I’m riding either bike, I have noise canceling buds in my ears watching a video or listening to music. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

      What I need is to be able to stay 140-160 for 30+ minutes with occasional bursts of HIIT at 160+.

      @@bmp713 Yes, I would say from my experience the AD7 is good for that. I have actually done 45min workouts on it, while using a fitness tracker to increase or decrease my tempo to stay in a specific heart rate threshold.

    If you were to rig up aerobars could it be more comfortable for longer sessions? I jave a road bike in a trainer that i use for myself, but for clients i train, i want to get an air bike for warmups and intervals. I'd like to have an option for steady cardio. Weather permitting they can run/walk outdoors, but for bad weather or those who need a non-weight bearing option, i want a bike.

      Yes! Something that I have been thinking about rigging up to the echo. It’s a challenge as it would need to be rigged up to the center column and high enough so the arms don’t hit it while swinging back and forth. Definitely a good question.

      The distance between the handles is fairly narrow, so I'm not sure you'd be able to get down into aerobars without your upper arms & shoulders taking a beating (unless you removed the bike arms completely). Maybe have a look at the Concept 2 Bike Erg? That said, I ride 30-60 min steady-state on the Echo comfortably.

      Aero bars are probably way more work than necessary because you will likely have to source a new seat, pedals, a seat extension to get you at the right distance from the bars, takeoff the handle bars ( unless you want them to act as punishment for breaking out of your Aero position) AND engineer a way to make a new stem and handle bars to mount Aero bars. After all that is said and done, it still likely won't be perfect and you'll be setting yourself up for an injury. As such, IMHO, the Echo is simply not a good way to train Aero.

    Just bought the bike never tried or seen one before, but it’s universally praised all over the net.
    I was a little disappointed at first just how exhausting it is, intended using it for steady cardio. Learning to pace yourself is pretty hard.

      I found when I first got the bike my "slow pace" the cadence was 50 and I was able to do that for 30 mins. Now I can keep it at 70 for as long as I want

      If I can make a suggestion....I had a Polar heart rate sensor model H9. It's $60 on Amazon. This is a must for Rogue Echo owners/users. The console reads the transmitter perfectly. I exercise strictly by manipulating heart rate. This is similar to what Orange Theory is based on. You press the target heart rate button, it will ask your age. Then, it will give you a spread of low to high heart rate based on your age. You can watch it change throughout the session. I generally keep my heart rate around 75% of max for 40 minutes. I get off the machine drenched in sweat. I've lowered my blood pressure, and cholesterol significantly by doing this approx 5 days per week. I do Tabata intervals a different time of day using a device called Nucleous Core Pro. Hope this helps.

      I'd say hey are very different. The Wahoo trainer is mostly intended for those that want to have the same cycling experience indoors as they do outdoors. The Echo will force you to move your arms most of the time unless you're comfortable staying upright for the majority of the ride. It's heavily dependent on your training goals and style of riding.

      I’m sure you could use it in the lowest seat setting however you may face some challenges reaching the arms as they move back and forth. It may not be a comfortable experience. I too looked this up online and found similar information on Reddit. Hope that helps.

      Depends on the individual and preference of equipment really.

      Depends on which you are better at. I'm a trash runner, but probably within the top 0.5% as a cyclist. So for me, the echobike or assaultbike is the go-to. I recently did a 60minute session burning 1066cals. !!69!! kg btw, 5'10tall

      For a 5k run, i don't think a could go sub 19:30. That's trash, but the echobike does a good job at shrinking every muscle on my upper body, thus increasing my watts/kg

      I just responded to someone that is 63 and uses it 6 days a week, so I would say yes, it is fine.

    So for sport no you can’t ride it slow because the rpm is way too low to match easier gears with high rpms you’d ride at on a long bike ride. A cyclist wouldn’t benefit from long rides on this.
    For random zone 2-4 training yeah sure you could ride long cus rpm is irrelevant. For just fitness adaptations I think it’s fine to go long and slow on this, but carryover to actual cycling elements might only come from high intensity short intervals on this thing.

    I don’t know how anyone can sit on this bike for more than 15 minutes. The seat is so uncomfortable.

    EMOM 20
    Odd: 18-21/15-18 calories
    Even: Rest
    Every minute on the minute complete between
    18-21 calories for males and 15-18 calories for
    females. Adjust calorie count as necessary for
    your level of fitness. The effort should be
    around 90% to maintain prescribed calories
    during the odd minute. Be fast, but do not
    sprint. So, if you finish your calorie target in 40
    seconds you will have 20 seconds plus the
    following minute of rest remaining.
    Example:
    Min 0-1: Bike 18 Calories at 90% effort.
    Min 1-2: Rest
    Min 2-3: Bike 18 Calories at 90% effort.
    Etc.
