    Comparison of ProArt X670E to X870E:
    Improvements:
    - Wifi 7 instead of Wifi 6E
    - Bluetooth 5.4 instead of 5.3
    - Third PCIE slot is now connected 4.0x4 instead of 4.0x2
    - Wifi connector is now quick-connect
    - 80A MOSFETs instead of 50A
    Deterioration:
    - Front USB-C is only 30 W power delivery instead of 60 W because 6-pin PCIE has been removed
    - 12V ARGB connector has been removed
    Everything else has remained exactly the same!
    A surcharge of around 100 €/$/£ is in no way justified, the X670E has the better price-performance ratio, although the performance is identical except for Wifi/BT.

    Differences between ProArt X870E and X670E ("+" is upgrade, "=" is sidegrade, "-" is downgrade):
    + WiFi 7 VS 6E.
    + Bluetooth 5.4 VS 5.2.
    + 80A VS 70A power stages.
    + 1st M.2 slot now has a tool-less heatsink and an improved underside heatsink.
    + 1st GPU slot locking mechanism is improved (can have two hands on the GPU for removal now).
    + Clear CMOS now has a button on the I/O shield instead of 2 pins you have to jump on the board.
    = WiFi antenna can't be securely screwed into place anymore.
    = Number of gen5 M.2 slots is UNCHANGED unlike what is stated in the video (7:02).
    = RAM compatibility and max speed is UNCHANGED unlike what is stated in the video (12:15).
    = Bottom PCIe 4.0 expansion slot is now x4 VS x2 previously. In return, you have to give up 4 lanes of a PCIe 5.0 expansion slot instead of 2 lanes of a M.2 gen4 slot.
    - 12V RGB header removed.
    - USB-C front-panel connector supports 30W fast charging VS 60W previously.

      @@brianhoward9217 USB4 was already present on the ProArt X670E with exactly the same amount of ports. That's why I didn't mention it.
      Other X670E boards also have USB4 ports like the ASUS ROG Crosshair Hero. Only difference now is that all X870E boards must include USB4 ports.

    • @mettana7448
      @mettana7448 Місяць тому +3

      You missed the most crucial difference, which is regarding PCI-E lane distribution. The USB4 ports are now on CPU lanes, so they no longer compete with things connected to the chipset. This is good in some ways, because this type of board was known for IO congestion on the chipset causing issues with dropped USB4 devices etc. However, it also has the consequence of degrading the primary PCI-E x16 slot to x8 if you populate the second M.2 slot, something which did not happen in the Proart X670E. Basically, Proart X670E vs X870E is a choice between prioritizing M.2 storage vs USB4. If you want to run two 5.0 SSDs at full speed without affecting the GPU slot, choose Proart X670E. If you want max USB4 stability and performance without chipset bottlenecks, choose the proart X870E.

      @@Nayah9 "populating the 2nd SSD slot does NOT gimp the primary GPU slot" Where do you think the other lanes came from when they moved the USB4 controllers from the chipset to the CPU? They couldn't just conjure more lanes out of thin air. This has been discussed in detail on various forum threads and Ronin Wilde on UA-cam has a video with the full lane allocation breakdown. Populating M.2_2 and/or PCIE2 will cause PCIE1 to drop to 8x.

    Great review. There has been clarification regarding the M.2 slots.
    The top two slots (M.2_1 and M.2_2) are directly connected to CPU and are PCI gen5 (in x4 mode). But if you are using Ryzen 8000 series CPU then the M2.2 is not available (it's a CPU limitation). If you are using Ryzen 9000/7000 series CPU and keep in mind that the PCIEX16(gen5)_2 (the middle slot) shares bandwidth with the M.2.2 slot right next to it.
    Bottom two slots (M.2_3 and M.2_4) are through the chipset and are available as PCIe gen4 (in x4 mode).
    I hope it helps.

Also, Asus had coil whine issues in idle for their last gen VRM designs, and slight ticking noises for their b550 boards of this class. • @mrdali67
    @mrdali67 2 місяці тому +1

    I havn't checked it, but you can be sure it shares the lanes between the Pcie slots and the m.2 slots. The Hero and Wifi 870E boards both limits you to use their 2'nd Pcie slot (they just have 2 Pcie gen 5 Pcie slots .. not a third gen 4 dependent on how many m.2 slots you use) So if you want to use all 3 m.2 slots this will disable the 2'nd X16 slot .. and using the 4'th M.2 probably will disable the gen 4 x4 slot too. You don't have lanes enough for using everything at the same time. So these boards are kinda of a tease. They got a lot of connectivity, but you can't use everything at once 😐

      That is a very good point, even my PNY RTX 4070Ti Verto takes up slightly more than 3 slots, closer to 3.2 slots. This is not just exclusive to Asus, but many of the X870E motherboards from the other manufacturers have a PCIe slot that is rendered useless when a 3 slot video card is inserted. Most of this poor design implementation can be mitigated by a relatively simple design change by swapping out the PCIe slot position with one of the lower M.2 SSD positions.

    Question: What is max no. displays (4K @ 60Hz) which can be connected to this board, to be driven from iGPU using 9900X CPU?
    I understand this board has 1x HDMI and 2x USB 4 (supporting DP over USB). In principle, each USB 4 port could output to two 4K displays @ 60Hz (using an MST USB-C to dual DP adaptor). So I wonder whether it might be possible to drive FOUR, or even FIVE 4K @ 60Hz displays from the iGPU?
    (of course, another limitation is max no 4K @ 60Hz displays supported by 9900X iGPU itself, I heard this might be a max of FOUR, but unconfirmed?)

Where does the hobbling begin (assuming you have fastest possible drives for the slots)?

    Some things omitted: the x870e proart is basically a x670e proart. Not much changes apart to two important things:
    1. TB4/USB4 support: I believe they went from to ASM4242 to JHL8540 for the usb4 controller. This increase total bandwith from 32gbps to 60gbps (40+20). That's more bandwith, and better usb4 supports (no need to restart the computer when changing tb type devices.
    2. WIFI 7.
    Other than this, that's pretty much the same mobos. the X670e proart might become a very good cost effective version for ryzen computer.

    • @Anon-cv7ru
      @Anon-cv7ru 2 місяці тому +2

      And the CLR CMOS button on the back, no more using screwdriver to short the 2 pins on the motherboard... and the front panel pins area no longer as confusing as the X670E is one long row of pins.. that makes it hard to see it is a connection for front panel.

      @Nayah9 2 місяці тому

      Well, Hardware Unboxed actually tested the speed of the USB4 ports on the Asus ROG Crosshair X870E Hero (which likely has the same controller as ProArt) and reached a max of 4GB/s transfer speed. So yeah... I doubt it's much faster than X670E's USB4 ports if at all.

    • @OfficialEthern1ty
      @OfficialEthern1ty 2 місяці тому

      @@Nayah9
      We don't have the methodology of HW unboxed. The new controllers use more lanes, and ASM4242 supports more bandwith than JHL8540.
      It really depends on what host controller they used to on the usb4.0 usb device.
      Examples:
      1. ASM2464PD usb controller delivers up to 30 Gbit/s.
      2. There is few 10gbe -> TB ethernet adapters, some use sata (IOCREST), limiting the real speed to 6gbps.
      Hardware unboxed will have to test using a USB controller that can leverage the 40gbps+, and storage (or else) that can support 40+gbps.
      There is other things that ASM4242 can bring over JHL8540 on x670e (to be confirmed): Hot swappable device doesn't work well on JHL8540, it was recommended to have a restart before you plug devices, and typically TB4 device were not working well (if not at all) when hotswaped. I hope this is fixed with this new iteration of boards.

    My Mac M1 with Thunderbolt 4 is the ultimate Pro Art. I feel a bit sheepish admitting it since I have a soft spot for my PC. But Thunderbolt 4 is a must-have for me. I'd be willing to give up some features on this board just to have Thunderbolt 4. I believe that one of the 670E Pro Art models comes equipped with Thunderbolt 4. It's time for Intel and AMD to catch up with the latest technology trends. I understand that Thunderbolt may not be a top priority for gamers.

I've used a DisplayPort to USB-C cable to adapt an older PC to my display, and it seemed to work just fine. I'm just not sure if it'd do anything if plugged straight into the MoBo. Thanks!
