Thank God Brian Simmons found his gift and is sharing it with the world. I love his arrangements. Nothing short of amazing. I'm not gonna say who won or who lost but I will say that I appreciate that Southern throws in songs to show all the people who like quiet that they can be quiet and play beautiful soft music. It sounds great when they do, but this isn't a symphonic concert so those of who want them to play every song like that is being unrealistic. I just want people to stop lying saying that SU doesn't know how to play with different dynamics. They gave you a taste now back to the CRANKING!!!!. That's what we do. I had to come back and watch this battle again. After Southern finished playing their opening intro song @03:56, JSU heard the intro of the next powerful song and said "Damn, here these MF's go"! "Man we in for a long ass night!"
I feel that southern was winning during the first couple of songs, but as the battle went on, JSU stepped up and the battle became a matter of personal preference rather than "which band did a better job at what". Both bands sounded great. With that said, I preferred SU's performance.That doesn't mean JSU was any worse, I just preferred SU's overall sound.
I marched in the Jukebox from 87-91 (Baskin, Johnson were the primary arrangers of music). We were no where as big in terms of numbers as today's band but were just as loud. SU has ALWAYS had ear shattering sound. I mean HD/Stereo wattage hence "Human Jukebox", kicking on 8. Haymer and his staff has done a hellava job though. Some of those arrangements are flat out ridiculous. Good battle by both bands.

Southern is a crowd pleaser... Southern had the crowd advantage... Southern loud but... Blah blah blah. For decades this band has been and always will be top notch. They set the bar and other bands try to reach. The only band I know that has a long track record of being themselves would be FAMU they fell off in 2010. No matter how boring people said FAMU was the had a massive sound and quality. Southern is a powerhouse and a monster all to themselves. Ask yourself the question how many bands you know when they have to play Southern skate or take it easy the week before they go to the game. They bring their best, they practice harder and overall try their very best because they know the sound that's coming across the field.
All I have to say is JSU is 1 of the best bands when it comes to battling SU. But if they wanna ever beat SU they need a new band Director. Im not saying hes a bad guy, but these new band directors that SU got bringing it.. You can say the band hot. But the band directors arrangements and not blasting every song brings balance to their music. Like it or not, not taking anything away from the great Doc. Or Mr. Knighten... but they left the band in the right hands. Because these dudes with these new ears bring that fiya....
Being born in Bastrop Louisiana and having a mother who attended Grambling St one would think I should be a GSU fan. But I've always loved southern!! Their quality of music is second to none!! One matchup I always like seeing is Tennessee State vs Southern University. They never disappoint. My favorites SU, TSU, NC A&T, GSU and FAMU when they ain't fucking up and killing people!
Even after su kinda messed up the way murdered the song and turned toward state more than made up for it...like it never happened based on crowd reaction...V’s State couldn’t recover from their massive mess up

Very good show. I like both bands but SU's song selection was exceptional. Not to start anything, but, I do question the sound quality, It to me kinda sounds like the mic's were pointed more in the direction of SU. JSU sounds like it is being recorded from the side and not straight on. It's weird, I could be wrong but JSU just did not have the same power and sound volume and clarity that we have ALL seen this year. Just sayin'.... Thanks for the great vids though for those of us who could not get down there to witness live.
Most people probably not going to agree with me and or understand but JSU actually did have sum trumpets in 16, may not be as strong as SU's but they had moments. Compared to Southern of course people is going to say no trumpets. They have all the talent and they have been raining supreme over JSU's for years

I played baritone, section 4 years at Texas Southern. So I'm speaking from experience as well. I'm not saying there is no truth into what you're saying, I'm simply saying that's a lame excuse to give. They knew a game would be followed by a battle like that. But that's why you prepare. Just like the power was there (and they were indeed loud) the articulation and skill should have shown up also. All I'm saying.

I think they need to hold events like this at a neutral site. The pro crowd seems to sway the winners and losers. Being unbiased myself I think it's a tie. both bands made early mistakes. I can't wait to watch the Boom box Classic being from Florida.

Very good show. I like both bands but SU's song selection was exceptional. Not to start anything, but, I do question the sound quality, It to me kinda sounds like the mic's were pointed more in the direction of SU. JSU sounds like it is being recorded from the side and not straight on. It's weird, I could be wrong but JSU just did not have the same power and sound volume and clarity that we have ALL seen this year. Just sayin'.... Thanks for the great vids though for those of us who could not get down there to witness live.

Most people probably not going to agree with me and or understand but JSU actually did have sum trumpets in 16, may not be as strong as SU's but they had moments. Compared to Southern of course people is going to say no trumpets. They have all the talent and they have been raining supreme over JSU's for years

Y'all forgetting that JSU had a game a day before and SU was on a bye week...They had a week to prepared just for this and JSU gave they asses a run...SU did they fucking thing but y'all have to give JSU some credit this was a heavyweight bout of two of the best in the world

I played baritone, section 4 years at Texas Southern. So I'm speaking from experience as well. I'm not saying there is no truth into what you're saying, I'm simply saying that's a lame excuse to give. They knew a game would be followed by a battle like that. But that's why you prepare. Just like the power was there (and they were indeed loud) the articulation and skill should have shown up also. All I'm saying.

Been watching all the videos and breakdowns and angles. It was close in 2016, but j state definitely took it in 2017
I think they need to hold events like this at a neutral site. The pro crowd seems to sway the winners and losers. Being unbiased myself I think it's a tie. both bands made early mistakes. I can't wait to watch the Boom box Classic being from Florida.
