Dang, to see a Bass Trio makes me wonder if these jams can get anymore intense and creative! Really nice tones to show here, and you guys never fail to impress with these Bass Jams!
11:14 this is bad advice. The mix knob is super useful for blending your dry and compressed sound. Utilizing parelell compression doesn't "defeat the point", it's just another tone shaping tool.
@@romeou4965 I was running into the fx return on a fender Bassbreaker for my guitar. All my bass stuff is direct to PA with in-ear monitoring so no speaker for bass.
I like Nathan. At the beginning of this he was definitely playing the adult in the room - and that was actually very useful. By the end he's slapping and gurning like an idiot. Great player.
I had a gig with 5 basses. 2 upright and three electric. All amazing players, so the music was fantastic. Also, two guitars, keys, drums, percussion, and pedal steel. Somewhere there's a recording.
That was legit one of the best bass guitar trio performances I've ever seen on UA-cam, and it's for a promo video.... That's amazing. lmao. You guys are rad.
Bought this as soon as it came out, it has bass player all over it because there’s less inputs and outputs and expression pedals etc and as a rule they’re not used as much for bass as they are for the show off guitar players out there. As well as being cheaper than the Helix this unit makes massive sense, guitars sound good too through this.
I'm a bass player and bought the HX STOMP to simulate amps and cabs. firstly, the video is not explicit in the cabinets they are using... and I know why. If you take an electric guitar and connect it to this equipment, it sounds good. The guitar sounds are fantastic and I would say usable. As far as Electric Bass is concerned, that's another story. When you hook up a bass to an amp and cabinet block, it sucks. It sounds muffled, without definition. For some reason, they are using Impulse responses (they could mention where they got it) and 100% compression at the beginning... Line 6 didn't do a good job of this bass material. A warning for those with the HX Stomp, you will always have to use a clean bass line with a lot of tricks - EQ's, Comp's, etc. I leave a challenge for Andertons - Take Pbass, plugin directly to the Helix. Then add an amp and a cab, adjust the volume and show it here. If you want, I can do it, so as not to fool people. If you notice at the beginning, the 3 bass have IR's. Plus, when they ask for a clean bass sound, he puts IR's. why not put the HX Cab's? have all the mics, distances, etc... why? for what? Remember that the expert guy spent a year experimenting and checking how to work with this pedal. Shouldn't it be intuitive? How many basses are there in the world?- Precision, Jazz, Music man. The rest of the electric basses float around the previous ones. If you search - How to get a clean bass sound with Helix/HX on Google, you'll find it's a hot topic. it's not easy to go as it should be. and if it's not easy, it shouldn't be shown as such.
Actually, it's completely valid and useful to have the mix NOT set to 100% for the compressor; this helps retain some of the natural tone and attack / decay characteristics of your bass.
Yeah parallel compression is great. Also first thing he did was set the mix to 100% on all the modulation effects too, whilst this gets you a certain sound, it is only when blended against the dry signal that they actually work as intended...
Does this mean the last Line 6 I bought because it was the only multi fx good enough for bass wasn't actually good enough for bass to begin with? If so can I get a refund?
Is there a "drop" feature on these ? Something that would drop a standard tuning to half step down, 1 step down, etc... If so, how does it sound with a bass?
I wonder what should I buy, the helix lt (beacuae its almost the same thing in lower price) or the kemper. Im an working bassist and guitarist who looking for 1 good sounding solution for my rigs. Pls help me andertons !!!!
Excellent video -very instructive. Any chance of similar in depth demos of other popular multi-effects units? And I'd prefer you guys doing it rather than the Captain and Chappers - your approach and attitude is far cooler.
Certainly my first question about a multi-effects unit is "What inputs does it have, and in particular how many for expression pedals?" this is a very normal priority
(One of the many guitarists in my band has exactly this and an active speaker as his rig. I'm the bass player and I just plug into an amp, preferably one someone else has provided, because I am a very simple man.)
If you like me play with a heavy inspiration from Justin Chancellor from Tool get yourself a Helix and use for the effects... You'll run out of DSP before you can say 'Lateralus' but still.
It's painful watching him use a send/return block for the bass inputs. you can create separate signal chains and assign the returns to an input block, which is the better way to do it.
I hate multi-effects live - they just have the wrong 'attitude' ... However, that blending thing is such a nightmare in analogue and I an slowly coming round to the idea of getting some digital into the mix, much against my inner Analogue Snob.
I had the FX version. I though the compressors and filters/wah sounded dreadful. The drives were nothing special. The modulations were ok. The reverbs and delays I hardly used. Wasn’t really worth the money for a bassist. Might as well save some money and buy a Zoom. It did pretty much the same thing and in some cases sounded better for a fraction of the price.
I still use my podx3l for bass. The dual chain is awesome for a bi amp set up. I'm still at the start of the vid... So not sure if I need to sell a kidney yet
Do you know what I'd love to hear with much greater calrity and definition? It is the noise of the tea swirling around your mouth, mixing in nicely with your saliva, hitting the back of your throat and then you squeezing it down your esophagus. Could I have more of that, please? Preferably throughout the video. That'd be spiffing!
Well, I’m sure this channel would have you brainwashed to think these freaks all think it’s the best for bass all around, but just remember they have been installed here to make you think that. The reality is the Helix treats bass modeling like it’s a red-headed-stepchile. Just being real. Good luck with it if this sells you on one. Maybe in a few years you’ll get the ultimate upgrade.
@@FrankieBaker2 I don't recall my headspace when I wrote this, but I can say that I frustratingly worked my way through all the modelers, via all monitoring solutions, and didn't get what I wanted. I thought modeling wasn't for me. I couldn't understand people claiming it replaced their amps. Helix and the like especially so, as all the amps tended to sound the same after you really play through them. There was something off about them. Then I tried AxeFX, which also has bass options, and it's won me fully. I was able to get rid of my favorite tube amp (Mesa Triple Rectifier) because I no longer needed it. Through studio monitors or through a guitar cab it feels and sounds legitimate. Real.
RapttorX he's talking about their dedicated bass multi effects the Boss Gt 1B, equivalent to the GT 1. Bass players tend to use much less than guitar players. If you frequently play both, helix might be the way to go. Lots of bassists are happy without $800 worth of guitar amp sims...
