      I got the HX stomp a few days ago, how do you use it? I was considering using it with my amp, using it with a laney lfr 212, using it with just a poweramp, I have to admit I'm a bit lost, I am now really considering the laney as it would supposedly replace my bass amp and my guitar amp...

    Very nice Janek, can't wait for more on this....back in the 1980's Andy West used a unit called a Pro FX...which is still to this day amazing. I got one and used it with my drumset....I was making these sounds with my electric drums.... I still play around with it...now with my 6 string bass....fun fun fun.....never stop....thank you for your time

    As an HX Stomp owner I’d love to see a video on DSP management within the unit.
    i.e. how to set up a signal chain for different use scenarios and balancing the user needs with the DSP capabilities of the unit.
    I don’t run a lot of items in my chains but have noticed some items in the Helix are far more taxing on the DSP than others.
    Cheers,

    I really love the deep dive on the use cases for these amazing units! I still rack my brain daily with various use cases of my HX Stomp. Sometimes I need to use the DSP for amp modeling when I can't use an amp as well as recording scenarios. Then deciding on how to integrate a full on effects board without having to rebuild or re-arrange my board everything. Do I use the FX loop in the stomp and utilize a block for that? Should I utilize the more time based stuff as well as modulation only or should I use some of the dirt in the unit? I'm almost at a place where I am in full blown option paralysis. I digress. Some of the questions you posed at the beginning of this video are exactly the questions I have daily and it always comes down to what gig am I using this for and it changes constantly. Simplicity has come to be my answer in more ways than one, but understanding how you use it in context has been really eye opening. Many thanks!

    That's such an awesome series. I know you probably don't really use this feature of the Stomp & Helix, but it would be soooo helpful if you could spend some time talking about the amp&cab simulations in the unit and how you can dial them in to create tones that are suitable for your style of music. Most of the reviews on Stomp & Helix bass tones are very metal oriented, and I would really like to see how you dial in the tone to something cleaner and more usable to your style of playing 🙏🏻

    Finally someone doing something actually creative with these Line6 devices! I've been playing mainly guitar this last year, but all the other guitar players are more concerned with cooking up nostalgia-fueled sound patches, so I think i'd rather look at what the bass players are creating instead. I ordered the HX Stomp XL about a week ago, so it should show up any day now ☺️
    Question: can one midi controller unit control more than one device simultaneously? I'm thinking about getting the HX Stomp as well, because I've been seeing the used price dropping every week since the XL came out, and I'd like to experiment with using two units together

    • @janekgwizdala

      I'm pretty sure you could control the second Stomp from the XL via midi. And i have a Morningstar MC-3 controller that can control a crap load of devices at the same time. So I know it's possible.

    Hi Janek,
    I would love to see some content about the HX Stomp as a small footprint all in one solution.
    How to use the unit by itself (or maybe adding 2 non powered external footswitches) when you have a set with a band with a few songs and maybe a jam patch that can cover a lot of ground (octave, overdrive, ambient, slap).
    I am having a hard time configuring the unit in that way (it is still a work in progress). Because I also need to be able to get to the tuner, and go from one present to another in between songs. Choosing between the very flexible stompbox mode (that could be cool, but you can't change preset by pressing sw1+2 or sw2+3) or the snapshot mode.
    One weird thing of this unit's bypass is, when using bypass mode (super cool as a bass player), when you press a footswitch it will remove the bypass but not engage what you pressed. Which is a shame, because it would free up one snapshot for a clean tone when using and external footswitch with the bypass on it. Line 6 if you are reading, it would be great to be able to setup the bypass to be canceled and also activate what has been pressed instead of just whatever was on before going to bypass. Only pressing again to bypass would come back to whatever was on before.

    Hi Janek, this is great stuff. I wonder if you can advice on the following. I'm trying to decide whether to include in my pedalboard the HX Stomp or get individual pedals: sytnth (C4), reverb and delay (TC or Strymon), and octave pedal (OC5). I have read that integrating the HX stomp with other analog pedals can result in a muddy sound depending on where you place it on the chain. I wish I could do both, but budget and space are bis issues. Your advice (and from others) would be much apreciated!

  • @MrScannermann

    Great video.
    I had a stomp for a while hoping it would be tbe pedal to rule them all. however I found it frustrating to use and overall my individual pedals sounded better (frantabit, oc2 etc). being able to tweak a setting quickly via physical knob rather than scrolling through layers of menus unfortunately killed it for me. i can see the benefits when watching this video and maybe one day I'll re-purchase.....thanks Janek...

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  3 роки тому +1

      I think there are some very strong arguments for SOME players to use it as a stand alone unit with no other pedals, but like you, that isn't normally the case for me. And as you can see, I still surround it with some of my favorite boutique/weird pedal options. As a hub though, I think it's pretty awesome, and I haven't even scratched the surface in terms of using it to control other pedals with midi. I think that will give it way more value on the board once I can route those kinds of options.

    Hi Janek, I’ve been building my board for when we get to touring again . And the stomp is defiantly in consideration , it’s currently a toss up between the XL and the stomp I am currently using the source audio soleman as my main midi controller for the rig and the midi implementation is extensive have not run into anything I can’t do yet, but like yourself I’m trying to slim it down a bit and take a few pedals out . Do you use the midi control side to select presets on other pedals ? And can it take the expression pedal inputs and map them to external midi? And finally another reason is the amp and cab IRs, to send one of the send channels through a B15 model say and send that just to my neve RNDi for front of house , do you you send a feed with an amp model or have you to see how it sounds . Anyways thanks for the videos bud, most helpful and virtually convinced the HX are the way to go .

    I've got a source audio envelope filter (old one) that I would like to put there but it lacks low frequencies and the volume is a bit lower when I switch back to clean. It's a bit of a bummer because apart of that, the filters are good and maybe the stomp can help with volume and to beef up the lows. I couldn't find it in the manual

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure I understand the question to be honest... If you want to apply different things to different elements of your sound, you can definitely split your path and use an envelope follower on one side, and have other effects in path B for instance. I do that a lot with the harmonizer presets I've made for instance.

      I do. Especially if it's being used in conjunction with a fuzz or bit crusher for synth bass sounds. I'm going to try the new 3leaf audio version soon. And it's not like I don't still have a bunch of OC-2s at home, they're just too big (and also 12v which can be a pain as it needs its own dedicated power spot and can't run on a chain) and not necessary on this current board.

      For those who care. I actually ended up with the GT-1000CORE. Not that the HX Stomp is bad, but I sort of like the amp models in the Boss more than the Line6 ones. That's clearly subjective though, and probably only matters if you don't want to carry around an amp. The UI didn't bother me that much as well, which is also pretty subjective. I can see people getting turned off by the manual though, it's intimidating and has the dryness of an Excel spread sheet, however if you like reading manuals (like I do) it's gives you a lot of neat things to work with. Maybe, if I end up having too much money I'm going to add the Stomp to my collection as well, just to get some of the wacky sounds in that thing. Dang, gear is just way too much fun, I should be focusing on practice more :D

      +1 on that, would love to hear his opinion regarding the filters on hx stomp!

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  3 роки тому +2

      You have to remember that the way I'm using the stomp on this board is part of a much larger signal chain. So, my favorite filter isn't actually on this board. It's the moogerfooger MF-101. It's totally impractical for touring, and needs tip-positive power. Just a pain in the ass for anything outside the studio, and they don't make it anymore.
      I think the Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe, which is my filter of choice for this pedalboard, is perhaps the best one on the market. And the reason i'm not using a filter within the stomp for this setup is that it's not in the right place in the chain to be able to utilize that feature.
      That's not to say there aren't cool options in the Stomp though. I like the Q Filter, the Throbber, and the Seeker. All of which can be found under Filter>Legacy. When I make a video on using the Stomp as a stand alone unit, I'll be sure to include some filter options.
      I will say that the key with pretty much any of the filters in the stomp, is making sure you have an expression pedal to make the most out of them.

Really glad I added it to the "always on" section of the board. Had it for years, and never really dug into it before.

      @@janekgwizdala Nice, thanks! Is it somewhat comparable to the EP Booster or would it make sense to have both in a chain? I seem to recall your EP also being in the always on-section when you were using it.

    Amazing soundscapes / 'outside' playing / sounds and can't wait to hear what you get outta the Hx Stomp when you do some deep editing via the HX Edit Software.
