I don't know if you coined it first, but "Split N' Grit" sounds like the name of a bass plug in that Nolly would put out.

Line 6 Helix is amazing, I'm using it in my guitars and basses and it's so versatile and fast. Awesome soft and hardware! Totaly recommend it.

This was a really great tutorial on just bass frequencies and how to set up effects, I learned a lot from this
Love that you mentioned running dirt/drive on the upper frequencies but not the lower. I was playing in a black metal band and ran a tube screamer into the high section of a biamped Eden head and got tons of compliments on my tone. Lots of players in other bands mentioned that the drive didn't rob the tone of its nuts.
Works wonders with a compressor pedal as well. Get that punch and tightness by really squeezing those upper mids/high while letting the bottom end still thump.
This is, IMHO, they key takeaway of this video! The concept of messing around only with the top end is an eye opener!

Maybe one question: I think in the "merge point" - you could pan Hi and Lo left and right so you got hi and lo on different outputs? That would be another cool thing to provide this to the FOH for more flexibility ...

i bought a HX Stomp XL. Fell in love with it immediately. Took it back to guitar center 2 days later, and bought the full Helix. Love the Helix, but I just ordered a Quad Cortex, so we'll see.
so... which one do you like better? the quad cortex or the helix?

The crossover feature is almost a MUST for bass players who use effects but want to preserve the low end. Seems more effective than a “clean” blend on its own. Thanks for this!

I don't know if I'll get an answer here, but I figure it's worth a shot.
I'm planning in doing basically this on my current pedal board, but I was looking to put the Stomp into the FX loop of the preamp on my board. (Everything runs through the pre/di on the board then out to a power amp and cab.)
Could I get the same, or similar, effect if I were to run it that way?

Drive! Drive! Drive! I wanted a clean sound and found that the HX Stomp doesn't really have one. It's ALL drive at some level. Wish I could create a nice ultra clean sound with it - but no.
I was extremely disappointed in the Bass dpt. Because I DO play solo bass's both electric and Double bass. However it's loverly for Guitar and I got Native on discount so can look "In the Box". But would love any suggestions on clean HX. Let us know.
The HX Stomp is NOT just for Metal... I have great clean patches for my Dingwall 5 with nylon tapes, Guild ABG with La Bella CB40’s, Motown setting for P-Bass, etc.

Are you able to do biamping bass with the HX Stomp? Like putting a LPF on a bass IR/Sim and a HPF on a guitar IR/Sim?
I have 2 amps, I'm not worried about the power/cab portions of the setup.
I'm just trying to figure out if I would be better suited to go with an ABY and 2 EQ pedals to create a crossover for HI and LO signals.
Hey! I’m about to get into a Hx Stomp. I’m not tech savvy and I’m pretty new to bass.
It’s going to be used live via an amp and cab.
Would you still aim to include a cab sim in the chain?
I followed this patch verbatim and I can barely hear the Obsidian model...what could I be doing wrong? Its almost as if its not there!
So if you were going to use this on a bass head that has a preamp would it be best to just run it to the return on the effects loop?
Probably one of my biggest gripes about the bass guitar is that they get lost in the mix, no matter what genre of music. Your examples are excellent, thank you. And I’m a six string slinger, not a bassist.
That's just down to how sound engineers work these days, very few give love to the bass. Nothing to do with the instrument itself. Look for power trios for a decent example of how bass should sit in the mix. Something like the first biffy clyro album or something like Kings X
I have an other Line6 device, but seems I can use any mode or template, that is uploaded to Line6 cloud DB, can you upload your one plz (I cannot recreate it: my device, Amplifi TT, doesn't have dividing function)? I need just a preset for a bass, where signal is spitted: one signal clean, other distorted. In my metal-band there is only one guitar and one bass.
What are you using for speakers? A FRFR PA speaker like a headrush? a bass amp set as flat as possible? Just laptop speakers?! Thanks.

Awesome video!! When using this split and grit setup is it still possible to assign one output with a cab sim and the other output without a cab sim so that i can send one path to my bass amp and the other path to the FOH? I am assuming that is not possible when you use the split for the compression.

i would like to use the hx stomp exactly like tray showed us in this video, but in combination with an amp. Does anyone know if it`s possible with the stomp to send a signal without cabsim straight to the amp and a second signal with cabsim to the FOH? The helix stuff is new to me and i`m a bit confused...

It's possible with SEND-block in chain. Place SEND-block between AMP-block and IR-block. See factory presets starting with "BAS", for example.
Why don't you put this exact custom patch up here for download. You know, I just bought this Line-6 HX Stomp for my bass yesterday because of your video and this exact sound you dialed in. It could be one in the collection of the Gea rGods artist presets!
Is there other brand doing the same kind of device for bass?

I agree with a previous comment. That I'm interested in using the Stomp WITHOUT programming via computer/laptop. I would only use for weekly gigs in different venues. I'm old , I don't have a laptop 24/7.. I don't even have a mobile 24/7..
You can do everything by navigating the menu on the unit itself, it’s pretty easy

god damn. seeing this i kinda regret buying the Orange Bass Butler. Since i whould love to use something for my guitar AND Bass. I allrdy want some kind of reverb/echo Stuff for my Bass. And all that Cab sims ... and i whould finally have a cab sim for my guitar.... damnit....
Why is there overdrive when there's no effect present?
Anyone use helix and bass on the tech21 power engine deuce deluxe 1x12” with switchable tweeter, wood build, rear ports, HPF/LPF, 3-EQ?
shouldn't the amp/cab be added after the two separated frequencies are joined again?
The idea is to keep low end as clean as possible rather than being distorted by an amp, so I think that's why he joined them after the amp. And the cab isn't important for that part of signal.
It is possible to use the HX stomp with a powerstage 700 or 170 (or any other poweramp) with a bass cab to get a crushing bass tone?
Absolutely! Those are mostly aimed at guitar so you’d probably want a bass type of power amp but yeah should work great

@@philfort7886 , Quilter Bass Block, the Gallien-Krueger MB800 and MB800 Fusion, or actual PA power amps like the Crest ProLite, Crown, QSC are all options you could check out.

So how would I run this with a cab? Like, do I need to take the cab sim off? Would I be better off hooking it up to a monitor?

@@wayneanderson2866 you can do either although without the editing software, it gets tricky to navigate. I didn't have mine for long before it started giving me trouble, just decided to build my own board instead...
Can anybody explain why he's only using a CAB and not a full amp+CAB block?

You can for sure do it on the unit itself, it's easy and intuitive too

You can do it on the unit itself. It's actually pretty easy to use that way. It can be a little tough just because of screen size, but nothing is stopping you from doing everything that way at all.

It has presets built in but if you check the line6 site you can find free presets made by other users.

That's pretty much what he's doing. Although you could set it up with just a Y-split in stead of a frequency split, that should do it for simultaneous clean and dirty

someone needs to make a 400+ watt pedal sided modeler amp now so i can power my ampeg 8x10 and GK 4x10!
carvin redline 600 watt stereo heads are like under $200 used, and you could use a stereo pedal as the front-end with that. i prefer using 2 heads for stereo rigs, but theoretically you could get away with that. you could also cop one of those new behringer 2k watt stereo power amps for like 300 bucks, and that'd work fine if you're preamping it with a pedal anyway.

Literally the only thing that has me more willing to spend the extra dough on the upcoming Fractal FM3 is the lack of a DI...
I know this is from months ago, but you don't need a DI. The 1/4" outputs on the Stomp are balanced so you can just get a 1/4" Male to XLR Male adapter and run directly out of the Stomp to PA.

My Sansamp Bass D.I. with a comp works well for me..analog..knobs... and is less $ and has an XLR , ,,,.nothin against the Helix,, might be too much just for bass only with all of its capabilities.

I like the headrush board better. That screen makes all the difference in the world, and if you look around you can find them for not much more than the hx stomp used.
Under that logic... just buy a full sized Helix lol
too much saturation on the rat model will shit it up in a mix, clean up or vanish in the digital mist, or get a tube amp and leave line 6 in the dust, music has value
john sandberg Yep, wait until you have to haul a tube amp on the road and worry about having it stolen night after night lol. I would pick a digital stomp box every time when I'm on the road.
@@XiyuYang i dont need to wait ive used tube and modelling amps for thirty years esp on road, you gotta keep an eye, but in the mix as i said a tube amp kills all models, trick is dont leave an expensive tube amp on the road, always get it inside the venue is best :)

yeah the Helix is small and easy to use, but it's also more expensive than a full size POD500X, like wtf
That's because Helix technology is far better than that of the POD. A decade separates both of those technologies.
the POD HD series are by far the worst Line 6 has put out in a LONG time, even the older X3/XT/Farm/Vetta series was leagues ahead of the HD
The Helix takes all that to a whole other level, being actually competitive with Axe FX/Kemper/etc
@@Ghost17110 I had a great bass tone dialed in with my Bass XT Pro that I'd used for years live until it died mid-gig. I replaced it with an HDX and I have to tell you, as a bass player, this unit is meant for guitar. Bass is a complete afterthought. Its taken 5X longer to dial in a decent sound with it than it did an XT. It seems to be cleaner and brighter sounding, no doubt from having more CPU, but only having 4 bass models and no sansamp, no darkglass, and all pedals for guitar has made it an uphill battle.
because the small size of the Stomp is actually an advantage, while the sound is actually miles better than the POD500X. Stomp has 6 block limit but with just 1 or 2 block u likely already had a better sound than the POD with the whole signal filled up, and that actually also saves u time. The edit on everything is faster too. All in all it's just in a higher league, hence the higher price.
I was hoping to hear some normall bass sound, but this guy is crazu about freakin distirtion, so every sound was just horible.
