When I was 16, I saved up all my paper round money to buy my first multi FX pedal…the Zoom 509 Modulation pedal! I went to a shop on Denmark Street and paid in cash: The first £80 was in notes, the next £17 in pound coins and…the final £3 was in what we call in the UK “shrapnel” ie pennies 😂. Bless the man behind the till, he was very patient 🙌🏻
I recently got back into guitar and bought a Spark 2 from Anderton’s, I’m delighted with it and this time round I paid with a card 😎

Shrapnel, love it! 😂😊. 4 of my friends, when we were kids, we’d keep our “crappers” and we knew where the cop parked and got a nap. In the dark we’d all throw our pennies and the sound hitting the cop car has me laugh/crying (this was 50 years ago) from the memories 😂😂😂😂

Most people, even other musicians listen to the overall sound and not individual instruments (unless the are Nerdy- which is okay by me) so, particularly if you are doing covers, ifyou can get close it is enough. Multi FX boards and modelers give you that and save carting around heavy and irreplaceable equipment. They are pretty much plug in and go.

@ Id agree, there is a good argument for a self contained, all digital version as they are compact and offer a range of price and quality. Outside the studio the highest quality pedals can easily be missed, but we spend a lot of time listening to ourselves and we like the good stuff where we can lol. Lovely we have SO many options including mix and match.

Yes couldn’t agree more! It reminds me of the boss Me-25 I had years ago. Just crank the knobs until you got the sound you want, no analyzing if it’s the correct amp or overdrive/distortion combination based on what they are trying to emulate (tube screamer, klon, nobles ODR-1, etc.). You just hear it and determine if you like it or not.

I started on this journey into amps/pedals in 2023. I bought the Valeton GP 200, was totally overwhelmed with too many choices and not understanding how and when to use them. After lots of Andertons and That Pedal Show videos, I bought the Line6 Pod Express a few months later, and the simplicity and fewer options really helped me understand what, how and when much better. I’d thoroughly recommend that pedal to anyone starting out. I’m now using both in different open mics - the Valeton for more complex/in depth sounds with an electric, and the Pod Express with an acoustic just for the effects, and loving them both!

I'm an old duffer of 51 and have been gigging with the Valeton GP200 for the last year or so. I plug my own wah wah and overdrive pedal into the GP200 as well. It's an excellent piece of kit and so much more convenient especially for small pub environments. Our whole band is digital, even the drums. We have everything DI'd into a Behringer XR18 straight to whatever the PA is and use in ear monitoring. It makes getting the sound levels perfect so much easier and you no longer have to be deafened by the drums. No more lugging around a Fender Deluxe from the 80's for me. :O)

I know what you mean man- I started at 10-11 years old and I'm 53 now- I bought a Headrush unit, 30 something amps and cabs, 60 something fx- it's a really nice unit. But- there was something about having everything in this one box that felt like having nothing. I missed the pedal community, I missed building boards, I missed watching the reviews and staying informed on what was coming out- so I went back- sort of. I went over to the UA amp sims- they're just an amp and a cab- that's all, no fx. You get like 3 versions of the amp, 6 different cabs- but that's all. So, you can build your own analogue board, just like you used with a real amp, to use with it. I love it, I would never go back to a real amp now- I'm hooked. I have their Lion '68 which is a Plexi and their Knuckles which is a Mesa Boogie Dual rec. and I run my analogue pedals with them- it's perfect.

As a guitar teacher, I nearly always recommend a good, not too expensive MultiFX unit to students now in lieu of an actual amp, given that a good 90% of people do tend to practice in their rooms at home, and will save space, and their neighbors/parents/partner’s sanity by practicing with a multiFX through headphones. On top of that, they’ll get at least a metronome and tuner built in, so it’s better value than a cheap amp now. Just my 2 cents, but I’ve never heard anyone complain about that suggestion so far. They all seem to love having the choice of amps/cabs and many effects at their fingertips.

Yeah I’m a hardened valve amp lover but I’m on this video researching for one of my pupils who needs a little more than just a simple practise amp now… I’m think for him a Multi FX unit is the way to go. Its not worth getting a valve amp unless you’re willing to spend out, and get something like a Fryette power station (which i love I may add) to tame the volume while you crank the power section. That’s gonna set you back a couple of grand overall… or more.
Getting a good cab, an orange pedal baby and one of these works great.

For the first time I have a Marshall JCM800 kinda sound out of that 5150 or just a super nice Mesa clean with some chorus on it.
Never was my Amp so versatile and it's all thanks to the ToneX One! Of course, this can be done with any Amp with an FX loop and any modeler.
The two ABY-pedals to split the ToneX from the 5150's pre-amp really are key here! I can switch between my real pre-amp and the ToneX at the push of two buttons :D

Yet another great vid. My two cents...as a newbie Covid guitarist (picked it up again while "working" from home) who was only ever going to noodle about in the bedroom, it seemed a no brainer to go the Multi FX path. I had no idea what all the different pedals actually did. What did a compression pedal, or a reverb pedal or a delay pedal (never mind a flanger?!?) actually DO to the sound/tone, and what would fiddling with the settings do? It just didn't seem cost effective to buy a bunch of pedals just to see what each one did....with the exception of a wah pedal, I got one of those - just want to sound like "The Theme From Shaft". Just got the Boss Katana Go (with the wireless wah) and picked up a bargain Katana Air, so pretty happy with that set up. Keep up the great work, a fabulous source of information for us people just starting out on their guitar path.

I’ve had valve amps and pedals, line 6 helix products and have now settled on the cortex. Valve amps for home use are just too loud without spending more money on attenuation and cab sim devices. Modellers give you a cranked amp sound at quiet volumes and sound great. For a bedroom player, I think digital is the way to go. And yes I’m old enough to have started on amps lol 🤣

Such a dilemma and I'd hate to have to sell the amps for peanuts too.

One of the main reasons for me to use a multi fx has always been the sheer amount of possibilities it gives me. I 've used a gt-8 for more than 10 years and it costed new around 500€. For that money you get: 7 or 8 overdrive and distortions, a digital delay, an analog delay, reverb, chorus, phaser, Flanger etc and you can place anything anywhere in the chain and swith it from one patch to the next.
With pedals i'd be out of a lot more only for one drive, one delay and a reverb, let alone the rest and the wah. And if I want to move stuff around or swich my amp channel from clean to drive, switch of the chorus, add delay I would either have to learn to tap dance or get a loop switcher and then I'm even out of more money.
The gt-8 broke down last month and now I have a boss gx-100 that gives me even more for less money.

I used to have a medium size pedalboard that I carry around for shows with my band. But after awhile, its just tiring to switch pedal around especially when something goes wrong with one of the pedal or cable, it really hard to troubleshoot on the spot. I'm just using FM3 now to make my life easier and given the little time I have to focus and tinker around with my pedalboard now that I've grown older and need to spend more time for my family rather than spend hours on my pedalboard weekly.

    Hi!
My first processor is ZOOM 707 II. I must say, at that time (22 years ago, I think!) it was the best thing that happened in my life! Since then I can't live without an expression pedal - so I always have a WAH and WHAMMY, but recently I saw that BOSS made the GX 10 - a compact thing. And now, if there is no new guitar technical revolution, after the madness happening in my country, I will also buy this amazing device.

I've been using the Helix for about 5 years now. For some casual home recording and trying to cover stuff through the rock/metal cataloque. Mostly in a pseudo-live feel. Great sound, great variety, some "option paralysis".
I really like the buttons and the flexibility. You can either have the buttons turn stuff on and off, or change multiple settings at once with one button without changing the bank or patch. There's no pedalboard tap dancing required. Sooooo much can be automated! Just programm snapshots within one patch. Don't know if the others can do something like that.
I've played a Kemper once and I think the patch switches are way slower. That might be one point, If you have to or want to switch mid song, it suck, if the board takes a few 10-100ms to do that. Or if it makes weird noises while changing patch.
    Otherwise, nice conclusive video.

I am a bedroom player, and I got a Valeton GP-100. I think cheaper units like mine are much better alternatives for beginner players to explore and discover what they like. I used to have a small Joyo DC-15 modeling amp, but I didn’t like how it sounded through the speaker, so I used it with headphones instead. Later, I got the GP-100 and tried it with the same headphones. It sounded much fuller, and the distortion tones were significantly better compared to the modeling amp in the same price range.

Effects and size of unit and buttons. Spend a bit of time on QC and it comes more and more alive a excellent unit. But ij this video the Pod Express killed it in simple tone 💯

Quadruple emphasis on the usability part. SO SO SO crucial. Case in point - I tried a Boss GT1000Core. I fully acknowledge that the sounds on it are very good. However, it was the worst piece of gear I ever owned and I've been playing and buying and selling and trying all sorts of stuff out for the past 20 plus years. Sold it after a week of frustration. The main reason was how hard it was to use. It was not intuitive to me at all. So make sure whatever gear that you decide on, that it works for YOU. Don't buy something simply because that is what everyone else is using. If you try it and the workflow just makes sense to you and it sounds good, then I think you've found what you need. Another example - about 15 years ago everyone tried to tell me I should buy the Line 6 Pod HD 500 (or whatever it was called). I tried it, and the user interface for me just didn't resonate with me. Went with the Digitech RP1000 instead and for over 10 years I loved it and at every show I ever did there was always at least a few musicians in the audience that came up to compliment me on my tone. So just do whatever works for you that sounds good.

I was introduced to the modeling world a year and a half ago because I needed something to travel light and have a good amount of options. Had an IK Multimedia Tonex. Sounded great, but the user interface was non existent. So, so bad. Sold it and got a Boss GT1000Core as well. It was a substantial upgrade and UI was manageable for me, but it was still not the best. So we come to this - I sold the Boss and got Hotone Ampero 2 Stage. The UI in it is outstanding, very easy, very intuitive, with a touch screen. It has all the connections you will ever need. Last but not least - it sounds amazing. If you are interested and still have not found your thing or want something more modern try the Ampero 2. I'm not regretting it one bit.

    • @priorwitness

@deyandimitrov7287 I have an Ampero 2 Stomp right now and I agree it is fantastic! Thanks for sharing your experience about the Tone X. One of the things that kept me from buying it was I remember reading a comment that resonated with me regarding that there are so many profiles out there unchecked and are just garbage, and that it takes a while to sift thru it all to find a sound you like. It also appeared to be a gateway into a world where I might be tempted to keep buying endless amount of profile packs. I like tweaking things and making things my own. The Ampero II Stomp is not only easy to use but it is so easy to make a really good sounding rig in minutes either by the touch screen or via the software. it just works!

    • @deyandimitrov7287
      @deyandimitrov7287 Місяць тому

@@priorwitness Yes, the ToneX was my entry into the modeling but damn was it hard to navigate. It was so unintuituve that I didn't even bother tweaking anything. It's not something that is user friendly and it definitely doesn't make you wanna explore it's many amp models. Also at the time (a year and a half ago) I think it did not have any effects, there were just amp models and a basic reverb. I think they added some effects recently, but don't quote me on that. Congrats on the Ampero 2 Stomp! It is an amazing unit and at that price point nothing beats it, but it missed a lot of stuff like Bluetooth, the XLR outputs, bigger display, a lot more switches and the Tone Catch option. That is why I bought the Stage, although I really liked the small form factor of the Stomp. Those are not things most of us need but I tried a friends unit before I got mine and it did spoil me, haha. 😀

At the end of the video I thought Lee was going to go toward modeling amps like Fender Mustangs, Positive Grid Sparks, Biss Katanas [which isn't really a modeling amp] -- but where there are examples that can bridge the gap between a traditional amp with limited or no effects, purchase od multiple effects pedals, etc. comparative to multi-effects boards/pedals. In ways these amp examples can "somewhat" bridge the divide.

The GP100 is great, done away with my pedal board but, really, it's just an updated Zoom 505 isn't it? The tech was there 30 years ago if you knew how to use it (I did not at the time lol)

As someone who saved their pennies to finally buy my dream rig (100W Mesa Roadster and 4x12 oversized cab, then later downgraded to a 2x12 for bass control) it always felt like a "don't meet your heroes" thing for me. I was constantly told "if you want better bass control and remove the flubbiness, you have to get this Overdrive." or "Try switching to EL34 or 6L6 tubes for this type of sonic profile." In a sense, yes, a real amp was "simpler" but it takes a good amount of money and time to tweak things until you get them JUST right. And thats for one genre of sounds. Then if you want sparkly cleans or twangy country, you've got to do it all over again; more money, more time. I like to play a lot of different styles, and that for me has been the nail in the coffin for traditional setups (and lack of infinite budget). I've been focused on modeling for a long time now and all my guitar influences use modeling as well. Now it doesnt matter what kind of genre, I can always mix things up while having the possibility of downloading profiles created by my favorite influences. I'm rarely at a loss for creative tinkering and expression.

I love the sounds , but the thought of having to buy yet more speaker cabinets, update PA to a more powerful one, or purchasing FRFR cabinet sounds very expensive . I’ve not moved to modellers because of this and also the learning curves are often crazy. I would like a unit that plugs into my existing guitar amp, but this doesn’t appear simple to do and many people on UA-cam seem to spend hours trying to dial in decent tones. A final thought, music stores seem so reluctant to spend time with you demonstrating how to connect and use these units that it puts me off . What do other people think?
