..and now......here's Tommy!!!
This type of clean-pure comedy will never come our way again. Enjoy these precious moments from the past.
I don't know how "clean" it was. A jazz musician talking about going to a "clinic" is HEAVILY loaded with innuendo.
It means there were no F bombs said to make the skit funny. Get a clue Sherlock and don't think too deep!
@@fosbury68 The thing is that it was innuendo, and not raw, biting humor.
@@nate4745 It was innuendo about going to a clinic for VD. If that counts as "clean-pure" in your book, I don't know what to tell you.
@@fosbury68 I understand this. The important thing is that children should not get the joke. As in most things in life, we don't want children participating in activities the consequences of which they are unaware or cannot handle.
No one was like Johnny, always gracious, total professional and sharp as a tack wit.
Johnny said one night he had seen Tommy in a restaurant having a seafood plattter and one of the clams yawned at Tommy. Loved the back and forth with Carson , Doc & Tom.
Johnny was, and will always be, the perfect late night host
New York attitude
It just felt right. Not forced or over the top. Just warm and funny. For a guy that was probably a little aloof in real life, Johnny sure was relatable on his show. RIP king of late night.
Who doesn't miss Johnny that was a real master
Johnny served up that softball and Tommy hit it right out of the park. Johnny was the master of milking every bit of humor out of unexpected situations - often when he was the brunt of the joke. Amazing talent on The Tonight Show!
My gosh I miss this. I was born in 1965. Every weeknight we watched the 11:00 news and Dad always watched the first part of the show. He and I would be ROTFL and Mom would just sit there and shake her head.
Johnny was like the old friend you loved just hanging out with. And America did for over 30 years.
Great stuff. There is a warmth missing from late night now. Johnny and his gang could put you to bed feeling positive. I think that many current late night guys have skills and their shows have energy, but you don't watch them to relax and hit the hay. It's more a reminder of what we see and hear all day.
No matter how many times you watch this you can’t help but laugh!
Might be the best line in tv history. Got me crying every time. Miss these guys.
This is when late night tv was actually funny. I would watch the Carson comedy classics too.
The Tonight Show Band was the best in the business. Tommy Newsome was a brilliant sax player.
Johnny Carson and his "crew" were simply the best late night show EVER!
Second to none, they were the BEST!
Thanks! I remember that and have been looking for a clip of it forever!
Tommy had the best unappreciated comebacks.
Haven't seen this in a year or two. I laughed so hard. I miss Johnny too.
When Johnny retired, late-night humor died.
Only Letterman came remotely close.
For over twenty-five years, no matter how your day went, we had our pals on the Tonight Show.
Johnny knows how to set it up,
Tommy had a great cone back
with Johnny’s help.
A great late nite host.
Another one of my favorite Tommy moments is when Johnny asked him where he got the jacket he was wearing, and he responded with "Well, it was in my closet, Johnny!"
mytreker or the time Johnny admires Tommy’s jacket, and Tommy responds, “it’s brown!!”
Once ,when johnny asked Tommy, what did he do for the fourth of July,...Newsome replied...I dropped my pants and let off a rocket....you're welcome
@@robertszmania709 Yeah I remember that one as well! And as I said elsewhere there times Johnny shouldn't have messed with Tommy.
One time Johnny asked Tommy "how do you hold a note so long without taking a breath". Tommy replied without skipping a beat, "Vaporlock". The audience roared.
@@staceyparker4272 nobody knows what is vapor lock is today
I was 22 when Carson retired, and I'm glad I go to grow up with Carson and Letterman on NBC Late Night. The humor was unbelievable.
I was the only one in my household that would sit up and watch Johnny every night. Even when a joke bombed he made it funny with a two step. I loved the Karnack the Great bits.
I love Johnny!
He has a way of making people famous without any intentions....
I always wondered what my parents were laughing at in the middle of the night🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Spent many late nights watching Mr. Carson and his merry group of men while struggling through my homework and other school projects! I miss Mr. Carson and his crew! Don’t miss the homework! ☮️🖖🏽
Johnny loved tommy.. What a great musician
July of 2022 and my sides are hurting 😂😂😂😂
Tommy Newsome arranged and conducted his last project "Swing Around the World ", with AELITA & Diva Jazz Orchestra" (2006). Tommy was supposed to visit us in 2007... Will never ever forget this incredible man!
Bless his memory!
There was such a huge amount of talent that arrived on scene in all genres in the 1950's and 60's. I mean it was like a vast never ending pool of talent.
Thank You for your service.
From Wikipedia:
One night Johnny asked Tommy if he wore designer underwear. Tommy: "I put my own designs in them."
Tommy Newsom - Beautiful Sax Player, Beautiful Guy. Great Stuff, love Johnny's facial expressions, too. Subtle, yet obvious. Pure Genius.
Johnny was always such a good sport. Always willing to share the limelight with others on the show.
Ed McMahan really added to the show...his robust laugh in the background really accentuates any good joke line...truly a remarkable pairing and run Johnny and Ed had....pure magic.
I agree. Some people think Ed's laugh was fake, but I don't. I think he genuinely enjoyed being second banana. As he said during the finale, "I thank you. My family thanks you..." He had a very good gig for 30 years.
I don't think there's a human being on this planet who could fake a laugh on Johnny's show. I can still recall some of the particular laughs of Johnny's audience: contagious
@@MrTonyd1954 Says volumes that Bob Hope requested these laughs for sound tracks for his specials.
Hey Now!
I was watching a Carnac segment with Doc subbing for Ed. Truly....*truly*.....no comparison.
Tommy had that special " shyness/innocence" about him, he wasnt too comfortable having spotlight on him, and almost every interaction between him and Johnny was like that🤣🤣....Boy!!! do I miss that show😢😢
Tommy was the master of self-deprecation and Johnny had no answer. It makes great comedy and it takes the wind out of the sails of any bully.
I love how Johnny clearly knew he'd been upstaged by Tommy's absolute deadpan reply...then proceeded to milk it for all it was worth by walking offstage in a sarcastic way as if to say, "I give up!"
