    It's weird that in less than a year's time, Serena significantly improves and changes her stroke production. She ramped her serve up 3000%, and strokes are flatter and more compact.

      Her stroke production didn’t change THAT MUCH, but Serena did get stronger, and faster, and a few inches taller.

    The key elements for power players to beat ASV was to take the ball early on the rise to catch ASV off guards, and to be patient in being continuously agressive. These were not exactly the playing style of the Williams (neither takes the ball early). So even though the Williams were much higher in level than say Pierce and Rubin, the H2H against ASV did not reflect so.
    They did beat ASV more frequently later on, but all Serena's wins were on fast hard courts or carpet. Of course they were maturing, but ASV was declining too by that time.

    • @LuLu-nw6bi
      @LuLu-nw6bi 2 роки тому +4

      Prime for prime they would kill her in most of their matches. Even the 16 years old Serena almost beat her at Roland Garros. The H2H only reflects the youth of Williams.

    • @peterzhou9267
      @peterzhou9267 2 роки тому +6

      @@LuLu-nw6bi not quite. Venus in her best against a fading ASV had to go three sets all the time (except on carpet). This showed how much ASV, when fit, can trouble them. Serena would probably fare better, but the point is not to show that ASV was a better player than Venus or Serena. It is to show how her counterpunching skills dusrupted their plays all the time.
      The example against Serena was not really indicative, since Serena was playing better than ASV in the match. ASV was playing quite terribly tbh, but simply changed her game plan to scrape by.

    • @JCole-fg3rr
      @JCole-fg3rr 2 роки тому +1

      @@peterzhou9267 the only thing that kept Serena from dominating their head to head was her mental game. She was young and choked quite a bit in 1998. By 1999, Serena had her figured out. They both take the ball early by the way.

      @LuLu-nw6bi 2 роки тому +3

      @@peterzhou9267 She can trouble anyone because of her retrieving playing style, but we all know who ends up a winner. And Sanchez Vicario wasn't fading, she was in her 20s and working as hard as ever, it's just that the competition got better(Venus did win outside carpet in straight, on clay, Arantxa's favorite surface). As for the match in Paris, it was controversial, but Serena was far and away from her prime back then, and she almost beat the eventual champion.

    Here we see a baby Serena who hadn't even played a full year against Steffi's chief rival post-Seles stabbing. ASV was also fresh off a GS victory. And Serena still nearly won.
    Steffi would have nowhere near 22 slams if she had to play against prime Venus, Henin, Clijsters, Capriati, Sharapova, Azarenka, Li Na. Serena's won 23 against much tougher competition. Serena = GOAT.

      Steffi had 10-1 h2h against Capriati. To say she will struggle against Capriati is absolutely laughable 😂😂. Capriati was far better in 1991-93 than 2001-2002. The reason she won 3 slams because there was no Steffi like dominate champion on the field, Seles was declined, Venus was sucked on australian open & French open while Serena struggle in 2001- early 2002.
