Last month I lost my GF. We lived together for 14 years. My biggest mistake was to NOT go with her into the exam room with her doctors and learn more about the meds that she was taking. She was 82.Had I been better informed to help then she may be still with me. Thank you so much for this video as i wish I had viewed it a dozen years ago.
I hope you give this advice to everyone you come into contact with. I did follow the medication my mom took (after she’d been on dialysis for 16 years) and was able to understand more what was going on with her. Unfortunately, when she did die, I didn’t have power of attorney over her medical condition, my dad did, and he was unable to process what I was explaining to him was happening. The doctors decided it was time for her to die, even though she was only dehydrated. No one listened to me and I was unable to help.
I STARTED TAKING METFORMIN IN 2011 STILL TAKING IT BCUZ THE DOCTORS SAY ITS BETTER TO KEEP TAKING IT. AT FIRST, HAD LOTS OF DIAREAH , A YEAR INTO TAKING IT I HAD TO HAVE SKIN TAGS REMOVED OUT OF MY RECTUM 🕳, I WOULDN'T PUT THIS ON M MY ENEMY SOOOOO PAINFUL!!!😢 IN PAIN FOR ABOUT 6MOS. IMAGINE TRYN TO 💩 AND U GOT CUTS IN UR ASSHOLE. 13 YRS. AND STILL TAKING IT. AND INTAKE INSULIN NOW AS WELL🤨🙄😒
Metformin saved my life. I was only on it for about a year and a half. Long enough to get my diet under control. I got my insulin resistance into remission and now I am 65 and I am not diabetic even though I have the diabetic gene. So grateful! You must follow instructions including diet instructions to avoid some of the side effects I know. I’m sorry for those that are unable to take it. My A1C stays around 5.5
Does metformin cause hearing loss and tinnitus? I was reading the article, some where it says it cause hearing loss and tinnitus. Do you see those side effects on you?
I have been on it for more years than I can remember and have had almost all of these side effects at one time or another. Doctors say they never had another patient with them, but it is nice to know that it is not just in my head as has been suggested. Feel like the cure is killing me.
How about the truth? I bet they had a lot of patients with this problem. I am mostly carnivore but if I have an extra coffee or even a green vegetable and especially not a fruit I have big troubles especially if I don't have Imodium on hand. I have only taken half of the prescribed amount 500 and I've been on it for years 10 years probably.
I’m on metformin. Have been for years. I get diarrhea once or twice a month( used to be more but we reduced my dosage ) if I do get an extreme day if it I just skip the next dose of the medicine and it straightens out. My A1C is below 6.0 now and everything is good. I am on B12 and D.
I've been on metformin since diagnosis 24 years ago. After 3 months, I changed to the slow release because of diarrhea and haven't had problems with that since. Rhinitis particularly interesting - I was told it was nothing to do with my meds, that my nose ran like a tab and I had thick mucus at the back of my throat causing me to cough. Pharmacist asked me how long I had a cough and I told them - 24 years. Heartburn is also a bit of an issue.
I felt terrible on metformin, the first diabetic medication prescribed to me. I felt like a zombie from my first dose to when my doctor finally agreed to take me off of it, and I attribute this now to hypoglycemia. My blood sugar levels and A1C did improve dramatically, and probably did so at a much faster rate than if I had not been on metformin, but the price paid was walking around in a constant daze. I felt better immediately when coming off metformin, and I've never taken it again. I also was diagnosed with B12 deficiency after my time with metformin, being prescribed B12 supplements, and I now also ascribe this to the metformin. Oddly, no one else I've ever met with a history of metformin has described the zombie-like feeling I experienced with the drug.
That's because the drug starves you from energy but cutting some of the energy pathways! See my main comment. Healthy diet is answer! No sugar. No artificial sugar!
When I first got diarrhea after taking metformin for several years my endocrinologist took me off of metformin and I started insulin. I have been a T2 since 2000. COPD since 1986 so that makes sense. I have few of the described symptoms on the 2 types of insulin.
Yeah, one of those weird side effects seems to be longevity, causing the cells to live longer throughout the body. They are actually testing it along with things like n m n And other longevity drugs seems like a good trade off
My wife has been on Metformin for a couple of years now and has been frequently plagued by explosive diarrhea shortly after eating, something that didn't happen in the past, and for several months now has been having severe muscle spasms, so constant that she's in pain throughout the day and doesn't get a decent amount of sleep, ever! If she's able to fall asleep it's guaranteed that in less than an hour she'll be awakened by the spasms again. After seeing this video I'm thinking we might be on the wrong track thinking the spasms were related to nerve damage in her neck.
I stopped all diabetes meds after switching to a low carb lifestyle. If we don't take in sugar and carbs, we don't get our blood sugar spiking after meals and doing damage. My A1c dropped to 4.9 without meds! Any blood glucose meter can test this theory, Eat a low carb meal and then test your blood sugars. If its under 180 your doing okay. I often get mine 120 or less. I eat big portions too, but of the right foods. mainly meats, veggies, some non sweet fruits, berries, nuts, cheese, unsweeted yogurts, whipped cream. Things I avoid, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, sweet fruits, sugary sauces and dressings, and sugary deserts.
I constantly have Diarrhea and I only take 2 pills 1 time a day. No other intestinal issues. No heartburn, no taste changes except I find too many foods too salty. No respiratory issues so far, except I do have sleep apnea. Hrm … not sure about the muscle issues. My B12 is low. No Lactic acidosis.
So glad I found this as I had to stop Metforin this morning:( You forgot spiking fevers and chills that bordered on a seizure!!!!!! This drug was AWFUL and I’m waiting on my doc to call back:(
My blood test has become strange. Red cells low, white cells high, low level anemia has been present for a long time. I take vitamin B12, Iron, but these symptoms of depression anxiety, reflux, sleep issues, still prevalent. Topiramate and Omeprazole are on my list too. I am 65.
Metformin is also prescribed for many who have Poly Cycstic Ovary Syndrome. This condition results in insulin resistance. I have PCOS and have taken Metformin for more than 2 decades.
Same here. I was diagnosed back in 2000. I still get cycsts, and once in a blue moon, it will rupture, but Metformin does help keep the cycst controlled. My ovaries used to look like bags of marbles before Metformin.
My face became swollen along with the rest of my body, particularly my stomach. I’m to old but I looked pregnant and it was quite uncomfortable. I spent the day in emergency at hospital. I’m now trying to control my pre diabetes with diet.
Watch some of Dr Berg videos on UA-cam. BERBINE can control blood sugar with no side effects. Metformin has a black box warning bc it can cause lactic acidosis and kill you. I know 4 people on metformin including my dad and all of them started having "accidents" another side affect. I found out bc my friends doc was honest and told her she was poooing herself during sleep bc if metformin. I then knew my dad and other friends were doing this bc of this drug and started researching, found Dr Berg online and he has helped me with my own health issues. After 18 years I've Come off blood pressure meds bc if my new vitamins. My neuropathy, severe arthritis, and chronic fatigue are so much better and it's only been a month. Hope this helps, good health to you.
I'm 81 and have been taking metformin since I was in my mid 40's. I take 2000mgs daily. Over the last few years I have had constipation, which might be caused by metformin, (or just from getting old). I take a laxative to fix that. Never even once had the apparently common side-effect of diarrhea. Maybe at 81 and healthy I am seeing the longevity side effect? If so, I can live with that one.......
I've been on Metformin ever since doctors discovered I had Type II Diabetes (about 8 years). Have never had diarrhea but, instead, have only had one bowel movement per week. Could being a vegetarian have caused this?
@@Granny-204 I get most of my CALORIES from fat, not that I "eat mostly fat"! I eat lots of low starch, Keto friendly vegetables, and moderate protein. Took higher dose of Metformin and had severe diarrhea for years without any sign of it resolving. Also minor heartburn. This only stopped when Metformin was reduced and insulin started.

But so worth the benefits that comes with it. I now have better health, more energy, better sex drive ,and vision, and my stools are soiled.
@enjoymusic1217 I do. Obviously, I have type 2 Diabetes. But since I've been taken all these supplements. I'm slowly, but surely beating it. I take all of them in the morning, after I eat breakfast. All dosage, that I take ,is the number that I placed after the supplements.
As a diabetic without a gall bladder I cannot tolerate more than 1 tablet a day, otherwise I cant leave the house. Im also on insulin and ozempic and yes I watch my diet (carbs and sugar intake) still struggle to get numbers under 7.
Me too. Diarrhea non stop, lost 65 lbs can't get my weight back. Looking like a skeleton. I'm still strong in muscle and do low workout to keep muscle. Scary ...
My mum had a dosage of metformin prescribed and the diarrhoea was terrible. 4 tablets as a first dose was ridiculous. She’s since died but I remember her suffering terribly.
I am taking (since I got off Metformin) Mary Ruth's B12 drops for under the tongue. I have heard it is much better absorbed than in the stomach. It is a DELICIOUS berry flavor! No affiliation with Mary Ruth's.
I saw this video and realised I have some of the side affects mentioned but for me it was the really bad itching all over my body and face after taking Metformin but now when I take Metformin I have to take Fexofenodin these I take twice a day morning and evening but I also take jardinance once in the morning
My mom was on it for just over a year and lost so much weight and she couldn't keep anything down she would throw up and have severe diarrhea. So I told her to stop taking it and she was able to eat again.
Many thanks for that. I have been taking Metformin for about 20 years. I cannot say that I have ever noticed anything much in the way of side effects. I have had low mood for about a year. So I think I will start taking vitamin B12 to see if that helps.
I take Janumet and I have none of those problems. Also Jardiance. I take the ERS pill. Maybe the doctors should prescribe this. I've been on this for years. I take it but I don't think it does anything much. Sometimes it seems like diabetes is a club or something. I can never keep up with the restrictive diet. I9 would die from it. So thanks for the fun video. Have a nice day.
How can you tell if these are side effects from this drug or a complication of the disease? My husband has sinus issues, diabetic blisters but these are also symptoms of diabetes too. He has been on this drug for a number of years and others for diabetes
Metformin gave me non-stop vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea and made it impossible for me to carry on with my work activities every day. I had terrible stomach acid and acid reflux from it. I kept getting bacterial infections from it and lots of respiratory infections due to pre-existing asthma condition from second hand exposure to cigarettes in a closed car driving around with both two pack a day parents. Was plagued by terrible skin infections with ugly red spots while on it. It gave me horrific muscle cramps as well that left me screaming in agony. I was deficient in B12 as well as calcium. My bones began to waste; when combined with a post breast cancer hormone suppressor, my nails became thin and my hair began falling out. That was reason enough to get off of it. I was on Metformin for an agonizing five years and finally told my doctor that the side effects were ruining my quality of life and interrupting of my work day. Have been off of it for 7 years and feel much better for it.
I was prescribed metformin and I had farts so bad,I told the doctor I needed him to write me a letter so I could get SSD cause I could not work anymore. He changed me to Glipizide and I was fine.
Hypoglycemia occurs when you fast or exercise with this? Hmm, sounds as if you did either of those two enough and effectively, a person might get down to a normal glucose levels if you did those without Metformin. I got B-12 malabsorbtion and severe nausea dealing with Metformin..
When it comes to health your mitochondria is the beginning middle and end . Metformin chokes off the respiration Rate of the complex one of your electron transport chained within the microndria. This blunts the effects of exercise but hell it's cheap And addresses your insurance company's desire to lower your blood sugar on a budget.
I was on metformin and it put me in the hospital for a week with cyclical vomiting syndrome, All kinds of no fun let me tell you. Apparently less than 1% have this happen to them.
I take 1 x 500mg Metformin twice a day for type 2 insulin resistance, but do not suffer any of the side effects mentioned here. It has reduced my HBA1C result from 70, down to 50 mmol/mol within 3 months. However, my Liver Function blood test (LFT) has shown an increase in my Bilirubin result, increasing from my usual 9 to 18 umol/L. My Dr has recommended a LFT blood retest in 6 weeks time. I hope this information is useful to others.
I e been taking Metformin for 7 years. I take 2 500mg twice a day. Morning and at night. I also take Insulin once a day. Before I got the Insulin Metformin was not doing it. I’ve had memory problems and my Dr, My Dietician and Nutritionist all said Metformin can cause short term memory loss. It’s worse at times then tapers off. I’ve begged my Dr to find something else. He did one of the new ones, Juvenal I think it was, it made me sick after 1 month. I haven’t had a lot of these side affects. It does clean your system out if you consume too many carbs or sugar. Memory loss at 60 is no fun. I’ve lost weight, and my diet is good. I have stopped eating a lot of foods. It isn’t a great med but it works.
I suffered from severe diarrhea for years after my previous doctor had me on waaay too much. He had me on 2550 mg per day. My new doctor changed my prescription to two 500 mg extended release pills taken in the morning. No more diarrhea and my glucose levels are just as controlled as with the overdose. Talk to your doctor about changing.
I have to take metformin 1000 mg at dinner as I have dizziness when I take it in the morning. Medication alone does not work. Have to stop eating sweats and start low calorie , high protein diet with regular exercise.

Was on this junk 2xs .the ist time was the regular type, non extended release which I had some trouble with .took it for awhile, then quit . Np at then Dr office put me on the extended release ,which I took for awhile .then took my self off of it .because all it did was tear my guts up .plus got to the point where I couldn't eat or drink certain foods ,drink.
There are. Metformin is just the first drug they try. Persist. Advocate for yourself. My 95 yr old Mom uses Repaglinide for one. While I use Metformin xl, I also take Januvia and Basaglar kwikpen, (a long acting insulin generic of glargine insulin.) These 3 are long acting.
I haven’t been to a doctor seen a doctor called a doctor. Got any kind of medical advisor or help or any vaccines in 40 years and I’m healthy as horse. Can you find a doctor can explain that to other doctors.
I also refuse flu vaccines and definitely refused all the covid jabs. Recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I refuse to take metformin, I will control it with diet, exercise and supplements. Dr dos'nt approve - bad luck ☹️.

I know it can be a little pricey. But so worth the benefits that comes with it.
I now have better health, more energy, better sex drive ,and vision, and my stools are soiled.
A question: do you take all those supplements?! And what are the dozes and what time of the day each supplement? And for how long?
@enjoymusic1217 I do. Obviously, I have type 2 Diabetes. But since I've been taken all these supplements. I'm slowly, but surely beating it.
I take all of them in the morning, after I eat breakfast.
All dosage, that I take ,is the number that I placed after the supplements.
As a diabetic without a gall bladder I cannot tolerate more than 1 tablet a day, otherwise I cant leave the house. Im also on insulin and ozempic and yes I watch my diet (carbs and sugar intake) still struggle to get numbers under 7.
It gave me the runs and. Later found out I could control my blood sugar with diet and exercise
I believe it is what left me with pancreastis and I have lost 75lbs and severe diahrea
SGLT2 inhibitors are currently a lot more expensive but could well be a better initial therapy.
I was on one of those ,constantly starving hungry, constantly urinating .
Had enough of that junk and quit taking it
Thank you, I will get vit B12
Is the b12 absorption issue permanent? Even after stopping?
I am taking (since I got off Metformin) Mary Ruth's B12 drops for under the tongue. I have heard it is much better absorbed than in the stomach. It is a DELICIOUS berry flavor! No affiliation with Mary Ruth's.
I have been on Metformin for Type 2 and PCOS for around 30 years. I have CHF and Kidney disease.
You got chf and kidney disease from this drug?
Ask. There are other meds out there now. Better for us as we age.
I saw this video and realised I have some of the side affects mentioned but for me it was the really bad itching all over my body and face after taking Metformin but now when I take Metformin I have to take Fexofenodin these I take twice a day morning and evening but I also take jardinance once in the morning
I had same problem itching but realised I used to much insulin then i reduced my enselin just a little then the itching left it was bad the itching
My mom was on it for just over a year and lost so much weight and she couldn't keep anything down she would throw up and have severe diarrhea. So I told her to stop taking it and she was able to eat again.
Thank you. ❤
Many thanks for that. I have been taking Metformin for about 20 years. I cannot say that I have ever noticed anything much in the way of side effects. I have had low mood for about a year. So I think I will start taking vitamin B12 to see if that helps.
Quick question for you did you have any hair loss problems?
And acute pancreatitis-like symptoms? You didn't mention this
I take Janumet and I have none of those problems.
Took me awhile but after months I felt ok most days.
It lowers B12 levels and can induce lactic acidosis. Both happened to me.
You have been through a lot.❤
after a week of diaharria i went off it, went on keto. lost 50 in 6 months. now im 5.5 was 6.9 since 2018
How can you tell if these are side effects from this drug or a complication of the disease?
How do you control your glucose?
I wakes up my brain and makes me do better mentally Gaba🎉
question: how can one know whether they are not responding to metformin?
I have type 2. I used metiformin it only lower my sugar 5 points and dierria. Never again and my sugar is great
I was prescribed metformin and I had farts so bad,I told the doctor I needed him to write me a letter so I could get SSD cause I could not work anymore. He changed me to Glipizide and I was fine.
Glipizide caused weight gain for me and lose of kidney function 😢
@@DebbieD7777 :(
Hypoglycemia occurs when you fast or exercise with this? Hmm, sounds as if you did either of those two enough and effectively, a person might get down to a normal glucose levels if you did those without Metformin. I got B-12 malabsorbtion and severe nausea dealing with Metformin..
Wow interesting, why my doctors don't think of my symptoms could be side effects?
When it comes to health your mitochondria is the beginning middle and end . Metformin chokes off the respiration Rate of the complex one of your electron transport chained within the microndria.
This blunts the effects of exercise but hell it's cheap And addresses your insurance company's desire to lower your blood sugar on a budget.
The diarrhea was uncontrollable. 8 and 10 times a day every day. Had to get off it.
I was on metformin and it put me in the hospital for a week with cyclical vomiting syndrome, All kinds of no fun let me tell you. Apparently less than 1% have this happen to them.
I quit taking metforman in June 2020 when recalled
For those suffering diarrhea try going on modified release Metformin it stopped mine immediately
Isnt that a metabolic disorder? Why not fix that instead? Just wondering..
Very well done and so informative........thank you!
Metformin does not reduce glucose, it holds the keys to allow the cells to accept insulin, instead of rejecting it.
Never had diarrhea… gas absolutely. 😊
I'm actually allergic to Metformin! I broke out in hives! Am not diabetic, but have PCOS, metformin is usually the 1st medication prescribed.
Since i take metformin, i feel extremely tired, i also develop stress and anxiety...😢😢😢😢😢
Anyone, please advise me what to do😢
I used to feel the same didn't want to go to work and after the virus i start using cheap supplements cst only R27 for 90 and im working like hell😂
Definitely ask your doctor for a different medication there's a few you could try.
I have swollen hands and joints pain
I have been on metformin for years and I don't have any side affect
Same here
I was given it for PCOS.
How is it going? I just got my prescription today for the same thing
Nope I still have explosive diarrhea even after years of use. I have to clean the bowel after exploding.
Yep same.
@@Granny-204 because I have gotten used to the explosive bowel movements especially after drinking my morning coffee.
Oh no
I suffered from severe diarrhea for years after my previous doctor had me on waaay too much. He had me on 2550 mg per day. My new doctor changed my prescription to two 500 mg extended release pills taken in the morning. No more diarrhea and my glucose levels are just as controlled as with the overdose. Talk to your doctor about changing.
Same!
I stopped taking metformin. Even before I looked up the side effects. Because I felt like crap. And I felt better when I stopped taking it.
I have to take metformin 1000 mg at dinner as I have dizziness when I take it in the morning. Medication alone does not work. Have to stop eating sweats and start low calorie , high protein diet with regular exercise.
Yes
It's painfully when you listen this topic
My feet feel like they are frozen solid.
Cold? Stiff? Or both.
I have no pain but my feet feel dead.
@@cybersal7 cold all the time. Stiff most of the time and neuropathy getting worse. I will take pins and needles anytime over the nails and railroad spikes I have now or the red hot knives that poke my ankles
First dose I took had me in severe stomach pain! It made me blind and have to wear glasses!
I think alot gov studies are flawed and not done properly. Plus side effects alot times are from parasite herx. I took 1 per day with methyl b12 injection and felt alot better. Have more arriving today after awhile off
Wow. I've really lost the will to live. Sounds like it should be taken of the market.
Needs to be
It should it's a poor man's drug
Been taking metformin for 10 years and have 0 side effects also am still pre
This is prescribed for pcos as well, why
Don't forget blindness which is temporary but still horrible to endur as I had to.
...the condition known as hot dog finger
Read the instructions..📑..Take with food .🍽️.watch what you eat and exercise 🏃🏻♂️😀
This begs the question: "Is there a viable alternative to Metformin?"
@@lindapulaski5856 Thanks Linda! I'll have to check that out.
One of the good side effects is that I do NOT have to run to the bathroom to pee nonstop. ❤
And they call it a medicine? More like a poison.
Been on it since 2005. I'm on 100mg bid. I only get diarrhea when I take on an empty stomach.
Just say NO to this LSD.😂😂😂. Night mares.
Painful bloating and painful gas.
Don’t believe the hype - it makes you poop more than normal and most of the time it’s loose or worse.
