    Great advise on all the rod and reel combos. For panfish I have always relied on my Schooley's arctic blue ultra light 36" with a frabill sub zero with 3lb line. This year I bought a 27" Tickle stick with the Black Betty and 2lb line and love that combo. For bigger fish (bass and walleyes) I use a Fenwick elite tech 24" medium action with a Dave Genz Power stick reel with 5 or 6lb line. Some of these combos were alittle pricey but with that being said I've learned over 30 years on the ice that sometimes you get what you pay for.

    I don't think you can go wrong with this advice but I think it is more appropriate to match the rod to the size lure you plan on using. Most of the time we will agree as the lure size correlates well with fish size but since working the lure is paramount to getting bites, a rod that best facilitates the action, and transmits the takes of the lure is my main concern.

    Will a Saint Croix 27inch medium light work for walleye?

    Ive been ice fishing for 50 years I use a light action 25" Fenwick hmg with an old Mitchell spidermite sm 200 and 3lb trilene ice line and a Vexilar FLX-20 for blue gill and perch I use a 27" Fenwick medium light with a daiwa ul7 spooled with trilene 6lb. ice for Walleye with a Vexilar FLX-20 and I do excellent. medium and medium heavy way to stout for Walleye I bet you rip the hook out all the time Walleye and whitefish don't fight that hard through the ice at least not here in Michigan. And we grow GIANTS

    I’d like to see a master Lake Trout on that little set up you recommended hehe. 35-45 inches, Clearwater Lake, MB.

    well done video. good info. I've been looking into buying a sturdier ice rod for lake trout recently. One videography tip though, It is a cool idea compositionally to have the monitors behind you with interesting images/videos on them, but it ends up being really distracting when there's a video of you playing in the background of a video of you.

    My grandpa's friend cleans out the factory grease and puts on low temp grease, and the reels stops sticking when dead sticking.

    Surprise you have not mention inline reels. Just curious if they are worth buying. However your selection and information and knowledge here make feel that I am doing things right. Thank you

    Thanks, medium graphite it is... I like how you don't pimp specific brands despite the shirt!

      The information applies to every brand basically. It's up to the consumer to decide in my opinion.

    Hi jp, i want to get a 13 fishing widow maker this year for simcoe perch and crappie fishing, do you recommend UL or ML? Thank you in advance

      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  4 роки тому

      Sorry, never used them so I have no idea how much power or what kind of action they have. For Perch and Crappie I like a medium light personally. I have been using he Sienna Ice rod combo with the 500 size Sienna reel and it's been working perfectly for using the smaller baits.

    Is the shimano stratic ci4 okay for ice fishing or you better use ice fishing reel ?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      Stradic Ci4 is an awesome reel but I use everything from Sedona up to be honest... I don't find that ice fishing needs a very high end reel unless you are targeting big fish on very light line and small hooks where drag is very important

    Hey can you put what brand rods and reels please?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      I have used a bunch of brands over the years from Dave Genz Lightning Rods to HT to homemade and more recently been using the new Shimano Ice combos and rods, Sienna, Sedona and Convergence which are available from 26" to 42" in length depending on the action and power

    What length of rod should I buy?

    • @noelsell6028
      @noelsell6028 4 роки тому

      Matthew, I would go with this. I like a 30 to 32 inch rod for hole hopping using no ice shelter. I like a 24 inch rod inside a shelter because of the close quarters.

    is that the Sahara reel you have on all the rods?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      I use Sahara and Nasci 500's when ice fishing. Sedona is another great reel for the money

    • @ol2533

      @@JPDeRoseOutdoors what do you recommend, Sahara or Nasi 500?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому

      @@ol2533 honestly both will do really well. For a few bucks more you get a couple of extra bells and whistles with the Nasci 500. If you are looking for an all around reel to handle more fish I would bump up to the 1000 size though. I use the 500 size reels on my Ultra light and light setups. I use a 1000 size for Medium Light and Medium rods and then a 2500 for Medium Heavy and Heavy set ups. So if you want to do most things below having a medium heavy I would recommend the 1000 size

  • @chichuaxyiong7803

    No matter a big rod or small rod depending on how you know how to handle the fish.

    Lots of Small guides for an ice rod? I call that a nightmare. Remember it’s winter, it’s freezing. Braid also stinks unless your in a shack, I’m done with frozen buggers.
    Stick with the bonefish and tarpon, your ice tips stink.

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  2 роки тому

      Too few guides cause hard angles and undue strain on your line, especially on ultralight stuff.... I would rather have a smooth transition due to more guides but what would I know...lol
