    ( www.TFLtruck.com ) You may recognize the Toyota Tacoma if you live in the U.S., but that's not the truck the rest of the world would recognize. Instead, everyone else gets the Toyota Hilux. It's still a pickup, but how exactly is the global Hilux different from the Tacoma we can buy here? Fortunately, we have a viewer from Malaysia who explains how the Hilux is different.

    Here in Peru and all over Southamerica we use the Hilux 95% for heavy work and 10% for family trips. Its a Diesel, 1 real Ton payload, and 99% of the Hilux are manual not automatic. There is no Crawl Control only 4H and 4L, rear diff lock is optionable.

      Payload and towing is effectively the same between US and European/Australian trucks (and cars).
      US trucks are rated much lower for safety and braking considerations, bc people drive much faster on US highways and roads, while towing and hauling- or in general.
      Same vehicles, but rated differently for different road conditions in the name of safety and capability

    Here in the Philippines, it is one of the most reliable pickups that people get when they are loading heavy stuff. The hilux is mainly a work truck, in my experience it has the stiffest ride I have ever rode on both the 2014 model and the 2018 model comparing it to the others. People really get a hilux to use it for work and not for leisure.

    Thank you for this great look at the Toyota Hi-Lux, which is probably not known in the USA. When we lived overseas, I had two Toyota Hi-Aces, a 12 Seater with a 1.6 L petrol engine and a 15 seater with a Diesel. Both were great and super reliable which was necessary in the long trips to the villages on the dirt roads. I knew several guys who drove the Hi-Luxes in the Highlands loaded with the locals squeezed in the beds. I drove a Landcruiser with an inline 6 cylinder 3L Diesel. It took me through some of the most harrowing adventures in the mountains and through rivers that were so flooded they submerged the bonnet/hood. Those Toyotas were tough and trustworthy cars!

      Isuzu and GM has had relationships since the late 1960's one making the other's pickup or doing a single platform for both marques. In the last 2 generations one chassis made both trucks, Isuzu designing what became the OG Colorado / Canyon (still sold in some markets along with the last generation D-Max) and GM designing today's 2G Colorado / Canyon and today's D-Max.
      Right now BOTH makers build the trucks on their own factories (both have Thai factories) with THEIR OWN ENGINES, INTERIORS and TUNING, but underneath they are BASICALLY THE SAME TRUCK.

    I LOVE the Hilux - I had two of them in my previous life in South Africa. I had a 2.7 gas and also the 4.0v6 gas which is the same engine we get here in the Forerunner. In my opinion the Hilux is a lot better than the Tacoma for working. It has higher payload and towing numbers than the Taco - almost comparable with the Tundra in that regard - especially payload. For the really hard jobs you need the Land Cruiser pickup of course.

    • @jasonw8124
      @jasonw8124 4 роки тому +3

      The higher towing and payloads are only because other countries use different definitions, it's not that the truck in SA was more durable or sturdier.
      You can see common passenger cars in Europe towing RVs and boats, but their USDM siblings are either rated very low, say 1500 pounds or not at all.

    I live in Costa Rica, here we have both: Tacoma and Hilux
    Pros of the Hilux vs tacoma:
    - Better mileage (Because of its diesel engine, up to 30mpg on highway)
    - More torque than Tacoma (Therefore more towing and load capacity)
    - Dual glove box and the upper box can keep cool to storage beverages.
    Disadvantages of Hilux vs tacoma:
    - Less HP so is slower
    - No sunroof or wireless charger
    - No heated seats

      No heated seats or sunroof is a selling point making it a true pickup ute/truck and also means less stuff to break, I would get the Hilux just for that reason on top of the Toyota's bulletproof diesel paired to a 6 speed manual. It would be the perfect truck/ute

It is a tough little workhorse and fun to drive on and off road with IFS and a solid rear axle with leaf springs which might seem like primitive technology but it's a part of what makes these trucks so reliable. The short of it is the Tacoma is a lifestyle vehicle and the Hilux more of a work truck with some fancy options if you want. I think most Hiluxes can take one metric tonne in the tray so from one platform they have many body style variants, tray options and 2x4 and 4x4. From Toyota's perspective I imagine if they sold a Tacoma elsewhere in the world it would be one less Hilux sold and if Hilux went to the USA one less tacoma so the market may not lift.

You are correct that there is not a price equivalency with a factory vehicle, but the quality of my installation is so good that Toyota mechanics can't believe it did not come from the factory. And one other thing is this pickups are pron to accidents although they are stable at high speeds I wouldn't recommend doing a sudden turn, you will loose control very quickly, it's good that simon added spacers in his wheels to lower the center of gravity and give it more stability... Bill Waterhouse - I have a 2000 4-Runner with a 3.0L diesel out of a ‘05 HiLux. The 2000 4-Runner was the last year for the manual transmission, and the third Gen is still my favorite vintage. The diesel majorly woke my truck up compared to the gas 3.2L. With the Diesel engine I added a six speed manual transmission (also Toyota). I achieve 28-30 mpg on the highway with this combination and even got 17mpg towing a 1982 Isuzu Pup diesel from New Orleans to Atlanta. 4-Runners are great trucks. I wish you many miles on yours.

    • @RecBuddha
      @RecBuddha 4 роки тому +1

      I don't understand how it is "infinitely more modern" than a Tacoma, which is what they are directly comparing it to. The looks are pretty similar (I'm sure many of the parts come from the same bins), and you can get many more "modern" options in a Tacoma if you want - dual zone climate, heated leather seats, CarPlay and Android Auto, sunroof, sliding rear window, a/c power in the bed, etc.
