The several Toyotas I've owned have already struck me as being a step behind the competition from a performance/technology standpoint. But, I've rarely had an issue with any of them. They're super reliable and very well built.
As far as I know, Toyota's "just in time" strategy is more about how they work with little or no inventory of materials beyond what is necessary for immediate production.
Which contributes to this kaizen mentality. The just-in-time production method means that there's no incentive for Toyota plants to try and beat their deadlines or go ahead of schedule. They literally would run out of parts if they did that because of the just-in-time strategy. So instead, in the event that they're ahead of schedule, Toyota plant workers are incentivized use the extra time to figure out what could be improved about the car or the production methods rather than go ahead and get started on the next car.
On the flip side, that just in time ordering is also popular in construction. When you get a supply chain disruption though, it causes hellacious ripples apparently. We're still having a rough time with construction material.

AND of course Scotty approved this message LOL ....
I was blown away like couple years ago when Consumer Reports did their reliability studies and found that Toyota was number one. No surprise there. But what was interesting was that the second runner-up was very far away. There was more of a difference between number one and two than any other ranking. There was Toyota at the top and then everybody else far below. That much of a difference means they’re doing something different.
I work for a systems integrator in the midwest, and was taught about toyota TPS as a philosophy for automation, and i have to admit I was NOT expecting donut media to both catch on to this and put out one of the better videos in production quality to explain the situation. Toyota TPS has inspired a ridiculous amount of other businesses production, manufacturing, and management processes. Yall look into your shit, dont ya.

I had a 1996 Tacoma. Never had a single problem with it until it was recalled and the head gaskets were replaced. When the engine was re-assembled, the guy doing the work did not line up the harmonic balancer and the key on the crank. He just rattled the bolt tight with an impact gun. The harmonic balancer came loose and ruined the crank requiring the engine be replaced. The dealer refused to stand by their work. Toyota refused to fix it as it was the dealer's fault.

I’m a development test driver at Toyota Research Institute and I absolutely love Toyota. I cannot believe the level of integrity they have and how every single thing is done with the customer in mind. They do not cut corners on anything at all that would compromise the experience or reliability and everything is done with honor and respect. I am proud to work with them. As an automotive enthusiast, that’s not something I thought I would ever say about Toyota.
We are working hard to make sure that we keep the promise of no more boring cars!

What is the reasoning for "sealed" transmissions? They' DO need to be serviced, despite what they say. And it just makes it more complex.
Does that pass through to the Lexus brand as well?
@@trip4osu Yes! I work with mostly Lexus products!
Of course they cut corners too. It matters what "corners" they cut. No one will buy a $60K Toyota Camry. when you can get an Accord for $30K .The guys who cut most corners are the folks at Nissan..Hate to say it. They used to be as reliable or even more so than Toyota. not anymore.

"Let's play it safe and just make minor 'watch and see' improvements, all the while testing a new design until we're sure it's reliable" VERSES "Let's make the most cutting-edge technology to make a quick buck." Unfortunately the current-gen Tacoma still had transmission issues when it was released but it was nothing major and had a simple fix.

@@Mort3nB your thinking of the 2zz-fe for the lotus thing. However the 1zz-fe has a very simple reason why they blow up, and thats because of rpm. It’s kinda wild that people don’t know.
Or that Toyota partly owns Subaru and Toyota makes houses as well specifically houses you just need to assemble.
Some don't even know Mitsubishi makes airplanes, rockets and a bunch of weapons like tanks.
I've owned 2006 and 2009 Corolla sedans, and the 2017 Corolla iM (Scion iM) hatchback. All 3 vehicles were supremely reliable. My only major expense on my 2006 Corolla was the suspension rebuild at 110,000 miles (typical for any car). The only thing I didn't like on both the 2009 and 2017 vehicles was the clumsy electric power steering, in which I was never 100% sure what the wheels were doing with the lack of on-center steering accuracy. Didn't have any of those steering issues with my Camry or Tacoma rental vehicles.
I've also owned 2014, 2018 and now 2022 Kia Rio's and prefer their interior designs and technology while still being very reliable, but you still can't go wrong with a Toyota.
