      Man, yes, those prices are sick, I went looking today in the camera store and the body wasn't as bad as I thought, but the two lenses were $3200 and $6400 perspectively and that was used all the way around. I bought a Fuji X100V and called it a day.

    Leica is definitely one of those "get it or don't get it" kind of a brands. I don't understand people getting upset about the personal gear choices of other photographers. There are lots of reasons I can list for why I shoot mostly on film, and why I shoot with a Leica M3, but ultimately, I just really enjoy photographing in that way. And do I need a better reason than that?

    It’s been a few years, but finally got the combination I have been lusting after: Leica M10-D with 50mm Summilux Black Chrome edition. My advice to photographers considering a rangefinder is to try one. You’ll either wonder what all the fuss was about, or you’ll never look back. And whilst the cost of entry is high, I’ve rarely lost money buying carefully selected used Leica cameras and lenses; they hold their value very well.

    I just did the upgrade from M240 to M10-R a month ago. It's truly a big step up - faster response time, ISO, less buttons on the back, slimmer body and that 40MP resolution.
    I got the silver one as it works with both black and silver lenses I have. People mistook the camera as an "old" camera and aren't that intimidated by its presence :)

    Nice one man. So yes my M10 for me is something I feel I will never NEED to upgrade. Like you said the dynamic range is more than capable of saving a bad exposure. For me its about +/-3 stops. And if one can't take a photo within that range of user error then one really needs to reassess their knowledge of photography. This camera functionality/IQ/styling/build quality will always be timeless. When the Canon R5's and Sony A1's of the world are obsolete 5 years from now the M10 will continue to demand $3000-5000 just as the M240 an even older camera still demands till this day. Simply un-matched value in the digital photography world second only to film cameras in relative value. Haters come at me. 👍

    • @suba1234
      @suba1234 3 роки тому +2

      Ah, you're one of those people who think you can't take a picture with an "obsolete" camera. No camera will take a good picture for you, any decent camera can take good pictures in the right hands. I used Leicas in the 90s, an M6, M4-2 and M4P, with a 28, 35, 50. I dropped them. I saw them as overpriced for what they did. They're good for photojournalism, but little else. BTW, Leicas are not timeless. Nowadays, they're just snob cameras for hipsters and oligarchs, who need to show how much money they have. Most of them have never even heard of the zone system. "They take such great pictures" LOL...

    • @AlexOnStreets
      @AlexOnStreets 3 роки тому +5

      @@suba1234 Literally the opposite of my point. The fact is I have multiple "obsolete" cameras I shoot with regularly. But when you have a camera that actually functions in a way that never needs upgrading and a modern sensor to keep up with every other new camera out there, suddenly your GAS might just be defeated. It's shocking to me that you just see Leica's as hipster cameras after shooting them for years. As if people suddenly decide they don't care about photography anymore because what? Frappacinos were invented? So therefore zone focusing and focus by feel are irrelevant to everyone now? Because why? EVF's and eye tracking exist? Right tool for the right job bro. Nothing has changed. Just your age.

    • @suba1234

      @@AlexOnStreets I had numerous issues with Leica Ms when I used them. The most annoying thing was that anything larger than the 35mm summicron ate up a significant part of the viewfinder. The 28 mm elmarit was a case in point. Even if you used it without the lens hood it swallowed up about 25% of the frame. I used an auxilliary viewfinder every time I used it, even with the M6, M4P. There were no lightmeters prior to the M6 (or the disastrous M5), and the M6 meter was nothing great. I found the Ms useful when shooting handheld in low light at 1/4 or 1/8th sec. They were very rugged, but so were my Nikon F3, FM2, F2A. I also knew photojournalists who'd used Leicas for decades - M3s, M2s, M4s.. These days, though, I prefer my Canons for practical reasons. I could afford a Leica if I wanted one, but can shoot pictures equally as well with my dated EOS5D mkI and L lenses, to say nothing of the newer models. To each their own, but your first comment did sound like you were trashing other people's gear, which I think is unfair.

    • @AlexOnStreets
      @AlexOnStreets 3 роки тому

      @@suba1234 "Trashing" the Canon R5 and Sony A1 because the M10 will retain its value for longer vs them I will definitely defend that call. Those cameras are high tech computers. Amazing professional devices. But quote me the R5 and A1 will go from $5000 to $2000 faster than the M10 will. That's my only point. Otherwise all I said is the M10 is actually a good value for dollar camera. I shoot Fuji, Canon, Ricoh, plenty of other systems.. I just think Leica for my use case is the best and not afraid to say it. People that know me for my actual work know what I mean by that. I even make fun of myself over it. Never take your gear or your opinion so seriously though man. Cause while you don't like a certain amount of viewfinder blockage or frameline magnification I don't have an issue with it. Theirs negatives and positives to the system for sure but I don't use it for everything. Just for what it's good at. And that means I will continue to own and value the camera for lord knows how many years longer. Same with my M2 and Bessa.

      @suba1234 3 роки тому

      @@AlexOnStreets That's true about resale value. I got the same money for my M gear that I bought it for even after years of use. Bought my M10 one month ago, couldn’t agree more. I came from fuji x-pro 3 and I loved that camera! But it’s obvious that the pro 3 want to be a m-model. And the sad part is that they couldn’t make the most important part of the m-series, the viewfinder and focus. The focus by wire sucks! And the guidelines in the OVF jumps like crazy with back button focus. It’s a totally different experience to use the mechanical lenses on the m10 and at first I didn’t even see the guidlines moving in the OVF. And then we have the build quality and overall esthetic. I love the simplicity and minimalism on the m10, and no joystick! 😍

    I think for me, the real difference between Fujifilm and Leica cameras comes down to ergonomics and user experience, as of course you can make great images with either system. With Leica, everything is very simple and direct. With Fujifilm, you have so many options and settings you can adjust, lots of automatic controls, and a lot of (useful) assist features. Probably some people find the Leica too barebones, while others (myself included) find the Fujifilm overcomplicated. I’ve never used an M, just the Leicaflex SL+R7 with film and T+TL2 in digital, but for me that kind of simplicity is more helpful, and more enjoyable to use.

      @@user-ss6zt2mo1l It's this exact same thing I always say. Are they overpriced? Yeah sure. Can anyone afford one? No. Now, you buy an M7 or an MP, a glass, considering you have the passion and some finances for the film, and you have a camera that's gonna last decades. Leica can repair for 30 years. Leica MP + a good lens is 7000 (max price as example) for 30 years! That's not much, it's just that the initial amount is huge compared to any other camera. I would rather put 5000 to 8000 on an M7 or MP plus 2 lenses than 4000 on a digital Leica that's gonna be obsolete after a few years.

    I agree. I feel like M10 is all you need if you are doing just photography without video. 24MP is more than enough, and its ISO capabilities are not limiting. If you are wanting to shoot photos with a digital rangefinder, M10 checks all the boxes. There are other cheaper options that can take similar or if not better photos with autofocus and awesome capabilities, but there is something about using manual focus on a rangefinder that triggers gratification. Also, aesthetics of M10 and the solid feel when you pick up the camera helps with making you want to pick it up and carry it wherever you go.

    The reason why I like Leicas ( and you as well) is the same reason I loved my Blackberry and hated my first iPhone. The tactile feel, the deliberate actions and the feedback from pushing buttons with your fingers, not an annoying touch-screen that might do something you don't want it to if you touch it by mistake, or be too slow to respond when you need it right away ( have you ever missed a picture opportunity fiddling with the iPhone camera app ? I know I have, and cursed the wretched thing many times, lol.) I think the 'slowing down and taking better pictures' is more important than many folk realise. There is a lot to be said about the near analogue way that using a manual focus Leica digital camera makes you think helping do that.
    I've not felt the same about taking pictures since using a Nikon F with a Weston light meter back in the 70's. I soon moved onto the Canon T90 and away from 'manual' photography - albeit that you still had to focus them - and then into the early, somewhat disappointing, digital before settling with Panasonic MFT for the last decade or so.
    Getting an M10-P and a handful of used Voigtlander and 7Artisans lenses has really taken me back, and I love it.

    I played with one in the L.A. Leica store a couple years ago and have wanted one since. It was kinda like the first time I held my M6 where I wasn’t expecting the weight and solid feel. I guess I thought since it was digital it wouldn’t feel the same, but my budget won’t allow me to get one. I’m only a hobbyist so film Leicas are all I can afford, which is fine for me.
    On the covering the dot.. I have a black dot on my black M6. I get the tape reasoning, but I hate the tape look. The black dot makes it less “in your face” but still looks nice. For the silver, you can just remove the dot (it’s just a sticker) and take the red off with lacquer thinner and it’s silver underneath, (of course this is non-reversible, but buying a new red dot is cheap compared to black) I did that because I painted my dot black myself instead of buying an expensive sticker..lol.

    Just a word of advice for fellow logo-coverers: cut out a circle of paper and put it in the middle of your tape piece, then line up the non-sticky paper circle with the logo. Sometimes if you leave the tape in place for a long time, it might pull up the paint when you remove it, so the paper circle offers some protection.

    While I waited for Leica to produce a digital rangefinder that I liked, I used a Fuji X-Pro1 and X-Pro2 for my digital needs. Now that I have a Leica M10, I will not get rid of my Fuji cameras because they do things for me that the M10 does not. For example, I need video, auto focus, PC flash connection, wireless local area network feature with an Android phone, weather resistant lenses, duel memory card slots, and totally silent shutter noise.

    In my film only days, I used a Leica M6 with 21/35/90mm lenses.
    In 2017, I purchased a black Leica M10 digital rangefinder that would accept my three Leica lenses. However, the black Leica M10 was so defective that I had to send it back to the manufacturer for a full refund. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with my disastrous purchase.
    I was so disappointed that I lost interest in buying a digital Leica rangefinder. It was not until the introduction of the M10D, M10R, M10P, and M10monochrome lowered the price of a used M10 so much that I decided to try once again. This year, 2021, I bought a used chrome Leica M10. Thus far, I have been very pleased with my purchase.

    Benj -love the vids. I have rocked an M6 going back to 89 with only a 35 cron v4 and countless rolls of gaffer's tape covering up that stupid dot. Although for a while I had a Fisher Price sticker covering it. I feel like with the M10 Leica has matured the digital M enough to jump in. I thought about it with the 240 but the girth was a deal breaker so agree on that point. Good news is with my new black paint mod i can quit buying gaffer's tape! Turns out I do need some goth girl nail polish to clean up the top plate though. Didn't think that part through. I think most people crazy enough to shell out the cash for an M value process as much or equal to results. For those types of shooters that process is what leads to said results. Then again some people just want the dot, want the jewelry, have the cash, and several external SSDs full of crappy photos. Good or bad, better or worse, right or wrong is of no matter. Just one way or another. The M even vs. other digital Leicas is like the difference between a canoe vs. a kayak. They both float, they both get you there yet one is on the water and one is in the water. One allows for packing more crap than you need one only what you need. If you have spent time in both, you will know what I mean, Cheers

    I love it! I have an M6 and M4 and nothing beats the range finder!
    I would love a M10 but the truth is $4,500.00 used? Modern mirrorless? The Z7 looks so hyper clear, so perfect that I find less is more. Like you said the exposer triangle is right there. I recently bought an M8 just to see what it could do, knowing I would take no loss when I decide to sell it, that would be the same case with the M10 I suppose. Wish I could get a digital back for my M6, that would solve it for me.
    One more thing, I do have the Fuji Xpro1 and it is sublime!!! I put my Leica Summicrons (50mm, 35mm) on and bought a Voitlander 21mm skopar (surprise that was my favorite) on this body. Here is the thing and the main reason I would like a M10, it is just easier to focus than on any adapted mirrorless body.

    Hi Benj. Thanks for the vid, obviously you love your M10's which is great. And thanks for not spending heaps of time saying what a great sensor the camera has and how distinct the colours are and the mystical potions that produce the "Leica Look". Which can be said and justified, and then spend the next 20 mins describing how you just tweet it to make it better! I think your video is the most relevant to Leica, the fact that you can hit any image with the Lightroom, Capture 1or Photoshop stick almost makes the discussion on colour science irrelevant, almost. I think how the camera makes you feel is the deciding factor. Thanks again.

    I've used (but not owned) every Leica digital body. And the M10 is the best by far, in all regards. Image quality, ergonomics, and menu. So yes, of course it's worth buying. That's a no-brainer. Unless, of course, you don't have the money. Or you like other brands, and don't like Leicas. Then it's a non-issue. Simple as that.

  • @Barrrt

    Thanks for the vid! I was just researching 'leica magic' yesterday after a shoot where I thoroughly enjoyed my (old) fuji's and wondered: "What else is possible?".
    I have no experience focussing with a rangefinder style system and I'd be delighted with a video on that.
    My biggest questions would be:
    A) Would it make it impossible for me to capture the candid moments I love most? I'm a photographer because I love people and I don't want the camera (or focussing / camera fiddling) to get in the way. I'm in the moment with a (nude) person and I don't want to break the connection by 'being technical'.
    B) Would it make me a better photographer?
    C) Could I learn it, and how long would that take?
    Maybe this helps with making a video, and if not it at least helped me to structure my questions :-)

    Great vid. I think the title would make more sense if it was just “is it worth buying” without the “in 2021”. The M10 family is still the latest generation of M cameras, so you kinda don’t have any other option to “upgrade” to if the M10 isn’t “worth it in 2021”. And, we all know you can’t really compare M spec and tech sheets (neither at its release date nor in 2021) with other cameras because that’s not what the M is about. So, really, it’s just “is it worth it?” (Btw, the answer is YES because I have one 😁)
