      @@kubowich they ARE, just in control layout, and the bottom plate design, also you use the SAME lens selection, film or digital, so you can have the same look, but taking an eg further, if you shoot say a Noctilux 0.95 you technically have a better hit rate on the M-10 as the LV and focus peaking negates to some degree the shallow dof, and problems with manually focussing such a lens.

    I love the m10 p series so much that I also got the monochrome version in addition. I started shooting film this year with a Nikon FM as I already had 3 ais lenses so a less expensive start in learning film which I develop/scan at home. I'm thinking when I have black and white film loaded I'll also bring the m10 p for color if needed. If I'm using color film I will bring the m10m. I think an m6 may be in my future because I'm loving the film experience.

    About the shutter sound: I believe Leica changed it to become much more silent in the M10-R. I also have the M10, and you are right. It is a bit clunky and noticeable. But it is a nice sound though, and if you don't shoot much street, it doesn't really matter. Karin, think of it as your "Harley Davidson" designed cool Leica-designed sound ;-) I think it kind of flattering for your subjects to be depicted with the Harley Davidson of street photography 😀

    For years, the Leica M6 was my favorite 35mm rangefinder camera. I looked forward to Leica producing an ergonomically similar digital rangefinder that accepted my M-mount lenses. The M10 looked like it would meet my needs. I had planned on using the M10 for digital color images. I had planned to continue using the M6 for B&W film images.
    However, my first Leica M10 I bought was so defective that Leica gave me a full refund for it. My second M10 was also defective. Based on my bad experiences with the M10, I concluded that the M10 was not as well-made as my M6 and I could never depend on it for reliable shooting.

  • @GamachePhoto

    Nice video, great arguments. The M10-R has a more silent shutter compared to the M10. I do not have M6 and no longer shoot film, shot enough film since the early ‘80s!

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes, the silent shutter on the R and P would actually be a great argument to upgrade! When my M10 was at Wetzlar for repair I actually asked what a shutter upgrade to the silent shutter would cost... sadly it wasn't really worth it for me for the price, but I have to admit that I was pretty tempted.

    They turned the shutter-time wheel after M6, and that confuses me every time I switch between M6 and M10. Otherwise it is almost the same experience. The screen on the M10 doesn't distract me, I forget that it is there when I'm shooting at an event like e.g. a wedding - then I'm too much in the situation and
    have no time to look at screen. However if I photograph nature scenes, I use a tripod and compose and control the exposure via the screen. The M6 I prefer when shooting street - that is almost like a sport, and then I feel that a digital camera is like cheating :-)

  • @kaptnwelpe5322

    Maybe Leica should implement a "GF2"-Mode for the LCD. On my little beloved Panasonic there is no way to have a "real" preview when light is coming from the "wrong" direction. To frame there is enough from identifiable up to imaginable, the rest is left for having fun while "developing" the RAWs later... . Yes I know - there is an EVF which I don't have and won't buy at the called prices. Would be different if I get a GX1 which is insanley priced too... BTW: where is a Leica MFT with a b/w sensor version? Would sell like hot cakes...

    Since (almost) bankrupting myself with buying an M11, I primarily shot black and white with my M6. At first because I love it to develop by myself and at second because Colorfilm is disproportionate / insanely expensive. A used M11 equals roughly 220 developed rolls of Portra 800 (for me 2-3 years of shooting). At least this was my “Milchmädchenrechnung” to justify the M11 purchase 😂

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  6 місяців тому +1

      Honestly, this "Milchmädchenrechnung" (aka "girl math" equation) is pretty shocking if you think about it since 220 rolls are really not a lot. I shoot roughly 60-80 rolls a year, so I would have reared an M11 in three years already haha. I actually really like your system of shooting primarily black and white film - if I ever run out of the film I already have one day, I might actually do the same.

    I'm a bit more extreme. When I shoot film then I want the full mechanical experience from vintage cameras (60s and earlier). When I shoot digital then I want all the benefits of modern technology: EVF, eye detection, video, IBIS, focus bracketing and so on.

  • @superkrell
    @superkrell 4 місяці тому +3

    After shooting film, Leica M3 & Nikon F2, for most of my photography the acquisition of a Leica MD 262 changed the way I now shoot. The biggest reason is the cost of film, optical prints, premium scans, flash drives and shipping costs that are over $100 a roll! The MD262 satisfies my experience of film but shooting digital also. Having a camera that shoots like film with a digital soul. I`d think you'll love the MD262!
    I did have a chance to visit my daughter and son in law in the Netherlands in May 2024. I used my Nikon F2 and four rolls of film. Luckily I managed to avoid X-Ray screening and customs was gracious enough to hand check the film.
    My next vacation will be in Italy where I`ll take the Leica MD 262...!

    I only recently discovered your channel and have enjoyed very much the few videos that I have watched so far. This particular video is very interesting for me. having grown up in an analogue age where the only option was film and in particular black and white due to costs. It is interesting how in the modern era people try to compare film and digital. To me they are different experiences but having grown up with film my attitude towards using digital camera still is grounded from using a film camera. I think the user needs to slow down in a digital age and think about the craft and not focus too much on the modern technological advancements. It is of course great to have a digital camera like you mentioned that gives an experience close to that of a film camera. I was interested in the your comment about the Q that you used and how you felt it was more of a digital camera. At present I have the Q2 and the Q2M but keep thinking about getting a M11 but I have never used a rangefinder camera before. Thanks for the great videos Karin and look forward to watching more.

I managed to replace the shutter back then despite the camera being discontinued so it's still a new shutter inside, in contrast to the camera which looks like it went thru hell and back, what she did.

    As I love to go out shooting, actually I nearly never leave the house without a camera … I like to take digital and film cameras with me, sometimes like today even three… the M240, the M4p and a Hasselblad 500c/m, whereas the M6 is mostly left at home… it’s actually not my favourite Leica M at all… although it offers light meter.
    Anyway I was very surprised when I did some fun test shooting and compared the portra 400 with digital … great dynamics, rich in details as well as wonderful colours. Hard to achieve similar results on digital, although there are certain presets for LR, but on print… still the film results are more kind of pleasing. Yes the M10 shutter sound is a joke, here I definitely prefer the M240 or even the M8 - which I use for monochrome mostly…
    Always good light!

    Personal experience: Started with a M6, and then added an M9 to the kit. More recently added a M10-M to the collection. For me, between the M6 and M9 are seamless. Probably because the M9 requires, or rather rewards, you to be slow and deliberate. The M10-m is a great modern Leica and you can still shoot it slow, but it's more "effortless" compare to the M6 and M9. If that makes sense. Photography has this effort/ reward effect for me.

    I still try to convince myself that I don’t need a Leica rangefinder at all. 😅
    But in the end it is maybe more a question of wanting and not needing. 😂
    For compensating gas I bought a Voigtlander Bessa R and later on also a Canon P rangefinder. That is good enough for me to not want the Leoca M6 (at the moment), but a digital Rangefinder Leica is a one in a Kind experience. So if I had to choose in my situation the M10 would be the choice.
    But the M6 and then in Titan is definitely more beautiful. 😊

My film rangefinder is a Ricoh 500G which feels like a clockwork toy next to the Leica but has a good lens and as I’ve had it since 1979 I can use it pretty much without thinking. I’ve largely stopped using film though. It’s just too expensive and as I don’t have a darkroom I have to scan and then work on the image on the computer. I shoot M10M and was thinking of going back to Leica iiig. I shoot mostly landscapes but what you see as a negative of overshooting - I look at as one of the biggest pluses of digital. I can spend an hour on a scene with different compositions. Come home and pics that I thought were going to be great - weren't - but others were. I would also have a hard time giving up the convenience of editing images right after a fun shoot. Instead of waiting until my roll of film is gone.

    I think my main issue with the M10 is that I feel drunk all the time. I seem to struggle shooting level. 🤔I've only had it a few weeks so I'm sure I'll figure it out but it's crazy. I swear I'm "perfectly" level and I look at the camera and I took a picture of the leaning tower of Pisa.

    I own a beautiful black Leica M9. It is a wonderful camera. I love it for many of the reasons that you mention with your M10. Sadly, I no longer shoot film. I do still own a Canon Canonete QL17 film rangefinder. But, since film is so expensive, I hardly ever shoot with it. I rather shoot with my M9 and make prints if I want physical photographs. Thanks for another great video!

      The M9 is known to be one of the most iconic digital cameras, I heard the files look amazing due to the CCD sensor. And I get why film might not be an interesting option for everybody due to the raising prices. Since I still feed from my stock I have in my fridge and since I develop (mostly) myself I am luckily good for the next few years. :)

    Great video Karin! I'm a hybrid shooter like you. M10 and my father's M2 and a few others as well. Switching between the M's is very easy like you said. I also felt like the M10 wasn't as discreet as the M2 even though the M2 is bright silver. I think it's the giant red dot on the black body that stands out so much, I put a little black gaffer's tape over it and now I don't feel like I stand out as much. The M10 is my daily driver but the M2 is never far away.

    yes, I love the 'hybrid' workflow, I have a Hassy H1, with film backs too, so one body for both!, a boon to this is that if I am unsure of light, just switch backs, and use the histogram of the digital back, esp. if B&W is in the film back, then I can switch out and do colour too.

    Good evening Karin,
    interesting and honest comparison. My experience is M7 and M10M. M7 bought new over 20 years ago, and M10M recently new (to me).
    I have always been a fan of aperture priority, so both are perfectly similar and therefore interchangeable. Muscle memory as you say. Now sound wise they both are discreet, I think the M10M is quieter than your version.
    Now for years I have liked the artisan and artist half case for the M7 for its thinness and softness to the touch. I recently added the artisan and artist M10 half case to the M10M. To me it is acceptable and soft to the touch, which I appreciate. May be you should give it a try.
    I won't comment on use case as we are all different!

Also I developed the habit of not always checking the shots on the screen and totally agree with you. It's nice to have the possibility when I am unsure of the lighting conditions or otherwise. Try a camera who has the best of both worlds (Analogue and digital) : The Nikon F6 (sold between 2004-2020) is a Film camera not developed for professionals but for film connisseurs. It has auto winder/rewinder for film, a TTL Phase Detection Autofocus (11 zone) system [the Nikon Multi-CAM2000 autofocus module, same a in the DSLR the Nikon D2X]. Selectable AF Area Modes: Single Area AF, Dynamic AF, Group Dynamic AF or Dynamic AF with Closest-Subject Priority. Etc…

      @KarinMajoka  6 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate it! :) However, for me the Nikon F6 is honestly not really as interesting. I want a digital camera that feels as close as possible to a film camera and not a film camera that feels more like a digital camera. The more automated modes it has, the less interesting it usually is for me. I have a Contax G1 and even though it's a beautiful camera, I almost never use it (and am in the process of selling it) since I simply don't enjoy film cameras with autofocus (unless it's a point and shoot camera). So, I was pretty surprised that the automatic shutter mode on the M10 is actually something I use.

    Hi Karin! Would that be the 28mm color-skopar type I that I noticed on your M6? If so, how are you enjoying the lens (ergonomically speaking let's say)? I'm eyeing one for my M camera as well as it's the only 28mm from Voigtlander that supposedly has a 0.7m minimal focus, whereas the other Voigtlander 28mm lenses tend to have a MFD of 0.5m which doesn't sit too well with Leica M film cameras.
    U very much enjoy this video of yours. Super fun and creative person you are. Take good care of yourself...and the M6...and the M10...and the person recording you too. ;)

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  6 місяців тому +1

      Hi Brian, thank you for your comment, I appreciate it a lot. :) It's a 28mm lens on my Leica M6 but not a Voigtländer one actually but the TTArtisan 28mm F5.6. It's a rather slow lens and has that "focusing handle" instead of a proper focusing tab but overall I like it due to the small size and portability. I haven't used any 28mm Voigtländer lenses so far, so sadly I cannot say much about them. But I understand your problem with the minimum focusing distance! I returned the 35mm Ultron because it was just too annoying to have this "dead space" in the viewfinder in that close focusing range.

    Hello back to Düsseldorf! I acquired an M10-R recently when I relaized I wouldn't shoot film as intuitively and low-threshold as I always did - mainly due to film prices. While on 135 it will be gone, I will remain faithful to film on large format 4x5". My combination will thus be the M10-R for the more frequent explorative shooting and the Linhof Master Technika for slow, meditative image making. I think this combination serves me well; I like both kinds of experience and the cameras get a long perfectly, sometimes even sharing one backpack! 🙂

    Great to hear your experiences shooting two cameras designed to be almost the same but in different mediums. I shoot both digital and film. I shoot with nikons, D810, D780 (FX digital) and an FM3a (mechanical film camera). I mention that because the cameras are totally different and the experience shooting them is totally different. When I try to shoot both digital and film at the same time I just end up shooting digital. But making the deliberate decision to just shoot film produces a different, maybe more mindful process, from vision to capture. I think much of that is camera driven, so it's interesting to see how it works for you.

    I have not devised a system for when to shoot digital vs Leica. I use the MP film camera and M10-P but since I don't shoot really professionally but more as a hobby, I tend to shoot both in tandem. I do small photoshoots with family/my spouse or streetphotography or as a daily documenting tool but there's no system at all. I really wish I had a system but since I develop and scan at home myself, I don't really need to think about it. There are times when I shoot both cameras, maybe one M10-P with a 50 Lux and the MP with a 35mm Cron to distinguish the outcomes but again, no system. I do try to vary composition between the two if I shoot at the same time but not religiously. Daily, I might carry the MP with me or the M10-P, no rhyme or reason. I did want to add that I bought a thums up rest for my M10-P but I actually didn't like it. Having no grip on is kind of tactile reminder that I'm shooting digital vs film also and I prefer the slender feel of the M10-P; my camera also came with a hotshoe cover so I don't have to worry about dust gathering there. I like your general idea of using film for more "special" occasions, for important subjects so that means you shoot digital as a documenting tool to save on cost. I may borrow that idea.

For several years I had an ongoing debate in my head about committing to film or giving it up entirely. Add to this, I have medium format cameras I like to use, too. Hallo Karin, wie immer tolles Video! Ich habe auch zunächst mit meiner M6 fotografiert. Dann echt günstig an eine M9 zum üben gekommen. Nun nutze ich überwiegend die M9 als tolle „analoge“ Kamera. Also - best of both worlds 👍 Viele Grüße aus der Pfalz

    Will be working around Fairbanks Alaska with a collection of Zeiss/Contax film cameras that have become my camera of choice recently.

    If the camera feels perfect in your hand, why would you need to buy an additional thumb grip?

      Because it only feels perfect with the thumb rest.
