Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Spacedock scene FIXED

  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is an amazing film. Not only is it still (by far) the best Star Trek film, it was the most efficient. After the huge cost overruns of the first motion picture it had to be made on almost a TV movie-of-the-week budget. Several effects shots of the Enterprise had to be reused from the first film. Notably the sequence where Kirk and party board the Enterprise from their travel pod. Using almost shot for shot from the 1st motion picture, Kirk’s pod approaches the Enterprise in “Spacedock.” However the Enterpise can clearly be seen in its refit dry dock. The glorious Spacedock Model wouldn’t be built by ILM until the next film, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. To that end I decided to recomposit the Enterprise into Earth’s Spacedock using rotoscoping and new matte paintings I created for this sequence. First Kirk journeying into Spacedock to meet Spock and his trainee crew for inspection. Then the ship powering up to leave on its fateful mission. While i’m not one to mess with a masterpiece like this film I will say the one area it may improve the film is the character Saavik. When Spock lets her command the ship out of Spacedock it is played for tension. Kirk seems very uneasy at her piloting the ship. In the original cut all the ship has to do is thrust straight forward. Now in this new version there’s a bit more jeopardy if she can successfully navigate out of the huge hanger bay they are docked in. That said there have been a few attempts at this type of sequence made by designers over the years. However none used the original optical shots of the models and relied on lower fidelity home made CG models. The refit Enterprise is one of my favorite models of all time and still looks amazing. I built this very model when I was 10 years old. It was a lot of fun to play with this model again.

A really nice job of editing and cleaning it up. It was still mostly a re-use of footage from STMP, STTSFS, STTWOK as well as STTVH, STTUC. I wish Nicolas Meyer would have used the budget for newer effects and if they redid the movie using your footage it would improve the visual appearance. I have to say that them opening the main hangar doors of spacedock made me chuckle. I would think they would have smaller entrances for smaller transports etc. or why didn't they just beam up to the ship? If they did that we would lose the reasoning for the beautiful footage you re-used for this cool project and losing those scenes of the Enterprise would have diminished her character.

Funnily enough Kim Cattrall auditioned for Saavik in TWOK but Kirsty Alley got the part. Then later on was briefly recast again for Saavik in TUC. They didnt bother contacting Robin Curtis who replaced Alley in the next two films.
By the time TUC was being cast, it was decided another actress playing Saavik was'nt a good idea and fans would have hated if she had been a traitor to Spock and Star Fleet.

Any captain or officer pulling out of the dock that fast would have had their head chewed off, handed back to them, and a nice long assignment on the beach. I agree, the order was 1/4 impulse, but the correct one would have been thrusters ahead if I recall the orders from ST:TMP. The FIX would have been to overlay the voice to the correct orders. After the "cast off all moorings, it would probably be a starboard thruster order to push away from the "dock" into the main harbor area, then more thruster calls to orient the ship to the correct attitude, a zero rate call to stop the turn and finally a thruster ahead call to push them out of the harbor area into a free orbit outside spacedock. Then you would follow the "departure lane/channel" to open space where you would be free to navigate.

Hell, if you were to re-make these in 3D, keep the bridge interior consistent between movies (Fun fact: They re-designed the bridge every movie. TBH, there wasn't much else you could do without spending days with a photo-quality 3D render of the theatrical Constitution-class, space-dock and space pod models and I'm sure that would have blown the budget through the roof!

"Mr Sulu, you may indulge yourself". I always wanted him to roll inverted and go straight down. Why not?

This is great, always wondered. Where was the space dock in the wrath of Khan

3:18 Saavik: Ahead one quarter impulse power.
Lt. Valeris (ST VI): Captain, may I remind you that regulations specify thrusters only while in space dock.
I wonder why no one called out Saavik on this breach of regulations? LOL

Very impressive but never...NEVER would a starship leave spacedock that fast😬

Very good, although I would say that the Enterprise was far too quick in exiting the space dock, that sequence should have been a lot slower because it looks like they were going at full impulse

I like the concept very much.
I would change a few things tho:
-The Enterprise should be slowed way down. her Movement appears almost comicly due to huge parts to her speed.
-The biggest problem was the inconsitency between her direction after exiting space dock. I mean she went in like a 90degree angle away only to have turned to a complet 180 degrees in the next shot. it just looks strange.
-In Universe a lieutenant would never dare to go 1 quarter impulse power while in Spacedock with her Captain standing literally next to her and a f'ing admiral only 2 steps away :P
Other than that I really like the concept.

My car can park by itself. Pretty sure the Enterprise could launch automatically. Saavik only really needed to sit there.

I like a lot of what you done here, especially in concept. Would you mind if I shared a few small observations, from a film-making trekkie for whom this is their favorite movie ever made? It's strictly take it or leave it, I think you have a great grasp on things as they are and none of what I have to say deals with the limitations of the material you had to work with or compositing issues due to the expense of digital modeling etc etc. They are purely stylistic choices. Thanks!

@@NickAcosta-Films excellent. Wonderful attitude to take, my brother. As you bring in more ship noise alongside the soundtrack, try panning the sound so one side is 80% OST & 20% diegetic and the reverse is on the other side (80% diegetic, 20% OST). Watch your axis of action with the ship as it speeds up. Although you're switching the camera position (a necessity from the scope of movement), try to maintain the same axis of action throughout the progression of shots, until you hit the reverse angle at the end as it flies off. It will help the viewer maintain the sense of momentum through the sequence and make it feel more like one fluid movement. Finally, there is a dramatic difference between the camera setup for the shots inside and outside of spacedock. Most likely, changes in iso to handle the lighting differences and the use of an anamorphic lens for the exterior. Both of the changes would affect how light reflects off of the hull of the Enterprise, which is present in both environments. If you could adjust the lustre of the hull during the exterior part of the sequence, so that it better mimics how the hull of the ship would after the settings have changed, it would help to blend the ship in with its surroundings so that it looks like the Starfleet Craft seen there, and ultimately make it feel more organic to the shot.
That's all I have for you. I hope that I was able to provide something of use in your endeavor here. Just remember: No matter what you end up producing with the material that is the legacy of the original Trek, there is literally no way it could ever be any worse than what Kurtzman and Goldman have done. =)

But you still have the shuttle docking in the engineering section, not the torpedo bay. Plus any true fix would have them transport over, making the first part of this scene redundant,
