My dad wasn't really around to teach me how to bow hunt, so I never found an instructor to help me get into a tree safely.

Same here Sean. Been hunting for 18 years and my mentors were always against bow hunting. Been using your videos to help get me into the woods with a bow this year. I was able to harvest a nice doe and now am looking for my 1st buck. I just finished installing my mollie straps on my LW climber. Now looking into a portable hang on. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos because it really makes new bow hunters like myself get into the woods safely.

Great video Sean. I'm using this type setup for the first time this year. It's lone wolf but anyways I'm used to a ladder style climbing stick setup so thanks for the tips. Bought the lone wolf for the ohio trip mainly but will be using it elsewhere. Looking forward to the season. Thx again.

Really enjoy the detailed tips in your videos. I can appreciate them from an experienced perspective since I have been bow hunting and hanging stands for over 30 years now. I have to say, for me, the most difficult part is holding the stand in position while trying to thread the straps around the tree and through the ratchet buckles, even with both hands free while using a lineman's belt. Some stands have a system to help by utilizing a bracket to attach to the tree first to hang the stand in, or other features, and these definitely can help. As I have gotten older it's surely a job. Thanks for your helpful videos, and especially for honoring and praising our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Blessings to you and happy hunting brother.

Good tips here for a hang and hunt with having the last step the same height as the platform, however if you set up a portable to leave in the tree I like to have an extra stick above the stand for something to grab onto as I am climbing into the stand.

Okay, well, from a traditional perspective in the industry, a sponsor is someone you sign a contract with and they pay you money to be part of your production as an advertisement and other things, so this didn't categorize as sponsorship from that perspective, but if you view it that way that is absolutely fine. Hi Sean, you are a blessing - especially to the less experienced hunters. One thing that you may want to add is a rope or strap with large loops at either end. If you drop and are dangling, you can wrap it around the tree, pass one end through the other ends loop, and put your foot into the free end to help step back onto your stand. God bless you for all the time and effort that you put in just to help others!
With a lineman belt I think it would be pretty hard to "dangle" since you keep yourself so close to the tree with it. I do know that some harness come with a fall restraint strap, but that is typically for when you are harnessed in from the back tether.

Sean again great video! I hunt public land 99% of the time and I always used ladder stands or a climber. Unfortunately have had a couple ladder stands stolen and with a climber i very seldom found a tree I could use it in when hunting a good location. Here in SC if you leave a stand it is considered public and anyone can use it without permission. Im really considering a hang on. My question is do you leave everything there or do you take out the stand or the climbing steps or both at the end of the day?
I almost always take everything with me. In PA you have to get a free tree stand tag number, which i have, and you can leave a stand in the tree starting 2 weeks before the season and it has to be out within two weeks after the season. I have one stand that I have out in a spot that is 2 miles deep in public land and I have it locked to the tree and no steps to get up to it. Aside from that I take my stand every time.

Sean I love your videos, but have a quick question. When you're setting your stand do you think it would be easier in your experience to have the cinch buckles on "your" side of the tree verses having to reach around the tree to cinch them down when you lift the base up to cinch it down? I do realize you might have done this on purpose which is why I ask. I wanted to make sure. Just purchased my first hang on and love watching your thoughts on everything.
It really depends. Sometimes it is easier to pull and cinch when you are reaching around the tree. Sometimes if it is right in front of you it’s hard to get leverage. You also need to lean away from the tree. I grew up doing it without a linemen’s belt and harness so it was actually safer reaching around the tree because you were essentially hugging it rather than leaning back away from it. So I guess as long as you are harnessed in, whichever you prefer is fine.

Hi Sean, great video, how long does it take to set a hang on stand in a tree during a hunt? I've always used climbers or a ladder stand.
It all depends on the individual, and how high you are going. I’d say it takes me about fifteen minutes on average to set up a hang on depending on how many branches you need to get around causing you to constantly switch linemen’s ropes

In my instructions for my stand summit viper classic. It says dont use stand in rain or snow or anything. What are your thoughts on that recommendation?
If that is what the manufacturer recommends then I recommend abiding by it. Some stands simply don't grip well to the tree, and yours could be one of them. A reason they could put that kind of comment in there is to alleviate any responsibility if people get hurt using the stand in those kinds of conditions. So, if the manufacturer says don't do it, then don't do it. A good way to look at is to look for a stand that doesn't give you that limitation with the way it is designed if that interferes with your hunting style. That's my thoughts anyway.
You make use of the tree to climb up, especially when stepping onto the stand. What about larger trees? Would you put the stand lower so you can use the climbing stick to grab onto?
I've never had that problem.
Where do you get the harness? Where do you get the lineman belt? Just curious. I’ve never done any of this FYI. What about if your foot slips.
All tree stands come with a harness and mist also come with a tether or lineman rope. You can also order them online like on Amazon.

I always carry my equipment in on public land, set it up, and take it out with me. Some states let you leave stands overnight or for the season. If you do that, I would take out the bottom steps to deter people from stealing the stand. I would also lock it to the tree.
Do you prefer the web style tether with buckle or the rope style like the HSS?
I think either, I don't necessarily have a preference.

Hi Sean can you climb any tree hardwood and soft wood with climbing sticks and hangon stands???
If the tree meets the diameter set forth as required by the tree stand manufacturer, and if it appears to be in good health then I typically will feel safe in climbing it. I prefer hardwoods but there have been a few occasions I have climbed pine trees with no low branches on them.
How exactly does the lineman rope help you from falling down the tree while climbing up or down?
your weight drops, it hinges due to the friction caused between the rope and tree and pulls you to the tree. You grab the tree and hence, don't fall.

I use a lineman rope but I seen a video and someone said to use a tree strap at the same time because the lineman rope won’t prevent you from hitting the ground if something were to happen. Would like lineman rope stop you from hitting the ground?
If you feel like you’re falling, just hug the tree. It’s not like you’re helpless if your foot slips.

I like the XOP system, the cast platform is very rigid. I've had some stands that are welded and they are a bit soft and gave a little bit. I have a lone wolf climber that has always been solid for a lot of setups I have been in.
If you had to buy a complete package, hang on and sticks, and didnt have a biased opinion would you go with xop or lw? They seem very similar. Price of xop deff seems better but I know LW is made in USA so those 2 facts being aside what do you choose?
I will tell you that it depends. If I just wanted the lightest option, then it would be LW because their sticks are a few pounds lighter (I know because I have a set of them). However, I REALLY like the locking system the XOP has and they also allow you to do tricks like this ua-cam.com/video/d1dPvMQrZHs/v-deo.html
So, if you want the lightest, LW, but the XOP sticks have some advantage with the locking system. With LW you will also need to buy their quiver or find a good strap system to hold them together. It drove me nuts when I was just using LW because the sticks were always coming apart and I would have to stop and unload my stand and sticks off my back and then fix them and then start going again. When hiking a mile or two out of the mountains in the dark that REALLY annoyed and frustrated me, which is why I stopped using them after I got the XOP sticks. But, the XOPs are definitely heavier climbing sticks. As for the stands, the XOP seat is WAY more comfortable. The LW seat makes your butt hurt after a while, whereas the XOP is twice as padded so easier to do long sits.
Do those linemen belts catch u if u slip while setting up the stand I always just used a regular tree climber so I never used that safety set up
I've never fallen, so I can't say for sure, but it would certainly make it tough to go far since you keep tension on it at all times.

Sean, do you leave your stand in the tree or do carry it with out woods and take climbing step with you? Of course this at end of hunting day when you ready to go home. Some public land you have to carry it out what you bring in.
Over the years I have hunted almost exclusively with a climbing tree stand so I carry it in and out on the same hunt. In the state I live, however, you are permitted to leave a stand up during the season provided you have the appropriate identification tag on it required by the state (when hunting on public land). In those instances where I left a stand in a tree, I carried the climbing sticks in and out with me. God bless you.

Yes, a climber is definitely easier collectively, but in some instances they simply won't work, so it is good to have this kind of set up as well... Where I hunted in Iowa last year I had to use this type of rig for almost all of my hunting because there just were not many trees that a climber would work in. Thanks for watching and God bless you!
