How to Set Up a Climbing Tree Stand

- This video shows you how to set up both a sit down climber and a hand climber such as Lone Wolf and Summit style stands.
I'm often asked about the bow holder on my Lone Wolf climber. It is from an old bow holder I took apart about 15 years ago and is no longer made. One alternative would be this one, which is what I use on many of my other stands amzn.to/2jTaa5r

I just recently purchased my first climber and did my first climb yesterday. I had watched many of your videos along with others that helped teach me what to do and not to do, so thanks for the efforts you put into your videos. You're making a real difference in hunters lives. I wanted to help in a little way myself by letting you and the people watching/reading know that their is a stand called the Buckshot Equalizer that eliminates the problem of stand leveling. It's the stand I bought and I love it. Check it out people as it's the easiest safest way to climb.
Happy hunting
Okay thanks
Every Archer should watch my man Sean. Such a humble dude. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks, Kenneth! God bless you.
Most people lock it to the tree is they are going to do that to go prevent it from getting stlolen.
Today was my first time ever climbing a tree. With no prior experience, I just referred back to your videos and thought of the different things youve talked about (carrying teeth down, pulling the bow up so the arrows dont get caught, etc.) I just wanted you to know you def helped me feel more confident going in alone and staying safe, so i appreciate your videos and effort! Thanks

It's 5am, I woke up to pee and was hit with the question of how hunters get up in tree stands. I've never hunted in my life and Thank God this question has been answered so I can go back to sleep.
Lol, thanks so much, Joey. That made me laugh. Rest easy my friend. God bless you.
How did he get up there without a ladder??? Lol
Thanks for expounding on tree selection. Most people focus on the tree itself. I had never thought about looking at the surrounding area for uprooted trees and such. Good tips, thanks!
Thanks, glad it helped
I've watched countless videos to educate myself on how to get into my first tree stand, but I haven't felt comfortable enough until your video. I really enjoy your videos Sean. Thanks.
Wow, that is great to hear. Thank you. Glad my video helped. God bless you.
Love all the videos. I referred back to this one for yesterday for my first time using a tree stand. Definitely helped make the climbing process easy for me!
Great!!!
Great video! One of the best climber "how to" videos
Thanks! God bless you
I switched from a sit-down climber to a hand-climber for the very reasons you stated especially the huge weight, bulk, and noise reduction, and unobstructed sight plane with my bow. I'm all in the tree so I do miss nap - time in the sit-down version. Lol.

Yes, I like my lone wolf

@@seansoutdoors this vid actually inspired me to practice with my stand this morning. I'm having some difficulty using it( open front climber) for the first time. Seems like it takes a lot of exertion on the top to move the bottom up. But i guess I'll get used to it. I'm fairly out of shape and very tall.
For xbow hunting you can do the opposite and when using your bulky climber you can set the top part high and stand up and use that front bar as a shooting rest.
Awesome
On my summit I attached a strap to the front as a step, works great for that stepping on at tree base good vid thanks royboy

You’re welcome!!!
Outstanding tutorial. Well done sir.

I have a Summit Climber. For bow hunting I remove the seat portion that came with stand and use a strap on type seat (It can also be used on the ground when still hunting to give you a rest) with this you can set it for any height to lean back on, with legs slightly bent, to allow for sitting while in stand. I find this most useful for when you have to stand to make a shot because there is less movement and very easy to rise to shooting position. Also I use a bow with short brace height and place the top part of stand just below kneecap height , just don't put to much pressure on bar, to lean against for some stability and to know where the end of stand is without looking. I have had much success with this set up and I hope it helps other viewers as well. Also with the Summit there is included a strap to anchor the upper part of stand to tree instead of connecting to lower part, very secure.
I just use a cross bow. ;)

Thanks for using the harness. I haven’t been without a harness since

Thanks for another great vid! Luv all the tips...especially the "V-shaped notch". I use a Doyle's gear hitch and do you know there is a "safe" way to adjust your Lone Wolf on the fly and also once you get to the top if you judged wrong and the bottom platform is angled down? I learned through experience but you can adjust the bottom platform and get it level safely once up in the tree. There is a you tube video if I remember right showing how. Do a quick search. Is there any way you might do a video on setting up your safety harness and equipment? ( linemans rope, knots to use, things to make sure you do for safety when climbing) I have gone through a lot if not all of your videos and didnt see one on that. If you do have one i apologize about that. Im looking to go from stationary tree stands, with 6-8 ft height max. i want to use hand climbers or sit climbers, but i want to make sure when i get up 16 18 feet that i have properly set up my harness and safety equipment the correct way. Didnt know if thats something you might do a short video on. Thanks Sean.
Well this weekend will be my last weekend in the woods and im just going to sit in the normal treestands. Im not convinced that i will actually get my first deer out of them but giving it a last ditch effort for this season. Anyways, point being, i wont be using a climber until next season anyways so no rush my friend. I know you have a lot going on for yourself, and your family, so whenever would be great if you do have one on that. Thanks Sean.

hey Sean, great video. I have an XOP climber that is almost identical to your lone Wolf. I was wondering if you ever climb pine trees? here in Georgia, pine is a predominant species, and there are a lot of great hunting spots where the only trees around are pines. I've tried climbing them but the bark is so noisy! any tips for climbing them without it sounding like you're taking a garden rake to the side of the tree?
I've climbed pine trees in a few occasions but I hate doing it. They are very loud just like you said. Probably the best suggestion I can make in that instance is to actually use portable climbing sticks instead, because you can put them on a lot quieter... It is more work in that regard, and you may sweat a bit doing climbing sticks and a hang on, but it would be quieter.
Sean, I bought a used Grand slam climber like the one I saw in one of your videos. Of course I didn't get an owners manual with it and can't figure out how to make the pieces nest together to pack into the woods. Can you help me with this?
The seat part goes inside the platform part
it also helps if you stand out near the end of the stand. i will tie the top to the tree and actually lean on the shooting rail for even more range of motion for that hard shot. that way your not sacrificing comfort.
Thanks for watching
great video. I was undecided on what kind of climber to get and this video helped a lot. How tall are you? I'm 6'4" and am concerned about the comfort on the smaller lone wolf stand. keep up the great work!

Hey Sean, I havw a gorilla greyback ive been using for about 12 years and it is noisy to set up. Once I'm up in the tree its solid and quiet but the set up is noisy with the metal to metal contact when unpacking it and inserting the pins. Lone Wolf climbers seem like theyre quiet lighter and easier to set up and pack. What are your thoughts I do like having the bar in front of me but these other brands seem like theyre all the same as far as the aluminum or steel being hollow which makes noise when hitting branches. Lone Wolf doesnt seemnto have that problem they seem quieter. Whats your opinion on that subject.
I used to have a stand that has the bar around the front. Those are much easier to take a nap in but harder to shoot out of, heavier and bulkier. I prefer the lone wolf hands down
Have any videos shooting from the hand climber? Cant find much and trying to see how much space there is when you stand to shoot.
Not particularly. Sorry. I have plenty of room on mine though. God bless you.
Nice video very informative thank you
Thanks!
Two things one does it matter what type of tree you set up in like say maple or oak as en example or will almost any tree do and second I have found steel quick clips ( side release ) on a mail order site would it be best to switch them with the plastic ones that secure the foot to the seat for climbing.
Doesn’t matter. Just avoid shag bark trees. As for the clips, you do not need to replace them.
opinion on the Vulcan and summit viper classic SC climbing stands.
I like lone wolf
I feel really safe in my summit viper elite vs my tree lounge being so far from the tree and the safety belt being connected to the tree stand instead of the tree and the scariest stands I got are the original loggy bayou the rubber grippers don't grab well on a wet tree especially the hand climber
Great. God bless you

Sean's Outdoor Adventures I wondered why I was getting unlimited notifications. I think I’ve commented on many many videos over the years. Lol
@@JayN4GO lol, so sorry man. You are just too popular on here.
I’ve been bow hunting for 2 years now just wondering which do you prefer the climber or hang on. I’m looking to purchase a new stand just wondering which one would be better I only have a ladder stand right now. God bless
I prefer climber. It’s faster set up, take down, climbing, and you never have to swap lineman ropes to get around branches like with a hang on. Climber is easier to get higher too.
Sean do you use the Lone Wolf assault ? Because I see Lone Wolf makes 2 climbers one platform is 19.5"w.x 26"d and the other one is 19.5"w.x 30"d . Just was wondering how it is to stand to shoot ?
Noni use the hand climber II, which has the larger platform.
What linesman rope is that i use a 30ft rope but it can be a pain to climb with. All about safety but i like the length of your rope. Did you buy it that size or make it yourself? Keep the vids coming.
It is a lone wolf linesman’s rope. I like it, it works great.
Sounds like your rope is one that is made to be attached near the platform of a ladder stand. Then you can clip onto it on the ground and be attached to it the whole time you are climbing into your stand.
Great advice
Thanks
As a finer point I keep a log of favorite trees and the strap / cable adjustment.
I don't understand what you are trying to convey
@@seansoutdoors
I have about a dozen trees that I hunt from mostly. With success I might add. After the first climb on the tree I take note of how much strap/cable is needed to make the stand level at the height I need. I record this with the name of the tree. This saves time and effort when you need it the most. In addition I use ratchet load straps to secure the upper climber to the tree.
WHAT KIND OF TREE STRAP ARE YOU USING? A LINEMANS BELT WITH PRUSIC KNOT?

I understand that you prefer an open stand vs the bar. I know your not a representative but are lone wolf stands quieter due to the solid aluminum. Quieter set up, no metal to metal contact is important right? Thank you Sean.
Yes, the Lone Wolf climber is very quite to set up and use. After a few years though, you may need to check the bolts and tighten them all up as they could get a little loose and then there can be some creaky noises. Some people say you should replace the bolts every year anyway.
I climb poplars almost exclusively. They’re everywhere, grow straight and self prune most of their length.
Awesome, must be nice to have them!
Great video
Thanks!
Have you ever try to put a strap at the sit part after you climb to the desired high?
With the Lone Wolf there is no need because of the strops that connect the seat to the platform.
Good stuff, thanks!
Thanks
Brother... sincerely, Thank you very much for taking the time and making the effort to make this video! The way you provide a level of detail in the explanation and also those insights and gotchas is invaluable!
Just to satisfy my own curiousity, do you happen to be a techie or coder/programmer in your professional career? Just asking because I am and you strike me as one. We usually tend to notice more details than most folks do.
Again, excellent video sir. Thank you.
QUESTION: Where I go the grown-up Scrub Oaks are darn big in their trunks. And they don't go up all that high before that have large horizontal branches bifurcating outward. They're not really a straight-up and down and tall type of trunk as observed there in the forest you're in, in your video (I'm in SoCal). Is there a diameter limit on most climbing stands? And, assuming there is.. in that case... if a hunter desires to try hunting from above, how would this be accomplished instead of using these climbing type stands?
I've always hunted from the ground there, so far. But totally acknowledge the benefit of getting up above their nose, and might want to try it some day.
You can use a hang on stand. Here is a link to a playlist I have on treestand videos ua-cam.com/video/d1dPvMQrZHs/v-deo.html
Also, I am not in that profession, but thanks for asking. God bless ya.
You can use the climber as a hang on I own 3 but tough on big diameter trunks
What is that strap called that is between the bottom and top stand?
Tether
What rope did you use for your safety tether connected to your harness just incase you fell?
It’s the Lone Wolf lineman rope
Sean do u bring ur treestand in and out everytime u hunt or do you set up a day or more in advance? I go back and forth on which is best..
If you do leave it what do you do if the wind is bad? Move it, not hunt it and hunt the ground some where else?
Do u think it is better to bring a stand early and leave it or to carry it in every hunt?
I bring it in and out every single time.
Thank you for responding. I will have to give that a try.. How early do u arrive to set up? Do you also get alot of clanking and other bad noise from entering and exiting?
I like to arrive at the tree I want to climb an hour before it starts to get light. I do not make a bunch of clanking noise.
Thanks Sean
This was more helpful that I thought
Thanks for checking out my videos. I appreciate it. I actually responded to your post years ago, but ALL of my replies were deleted when I transferred my channel to a branding account,

Go w v u
If you select a good tree, and don't rush to climb up/down, can you say that climbing tree stands are safe?

With the second stand, once up ,where do you sit since the padding is facing the opposite direction?
There is a material cloth seat
I liked the way you climbed with that old style, but is still tiring You don't know enough about how to set the new style climbers, That little seat is good for sitting a little while, but starts wearing on you after awhile. The stand and sit climbers, are great for all day, and can be shoot from a sitting position, and not hit the stand with your bow, when you are taking a shot. Light might be alright for short hunts but more times than not, it's going to take some time to get that buck.

amen to that
Hi Sean,
Enjoyed the video,.....Do you have a video on the harness system,...and the pro`s & con`s of different one`s ?
I think I talked about the harness a little bit on this video ua-cam.com/video/3tZER_HBJQc/v-deo.html
Or maybe it was just that I talked about it in a response to a comment in that video. I forget now, lol, and I don't have time right now to go back and watch it all to figure it out. Got to get ready for Church. God bless
Thank you for the video
You are welcome
Do you ever cut small branches on the way up during same day hunt
Not when I am hunting on public land.
Will that scare deer away if I had to cut 1 or 2 ft dead branches on the way up
@@darrenkraus7295 If the deer are within hearing distance, they will circle downwind to determine what it was. If they smell you, then you won't see them
Darren Kraus probably not if if your careful.
Yeah, the tether is important. my tether wasnt snapped last year and the bottom fell after I got about 10 ft up the tree. took the breach birth effect to drop down and retrieve the base.
That must have been a tough situation! Glad you didn't get hurt. God bless you
Yeah wasnt fun but worst part was I could see exactly where I was going to land which is a good way to break an ankle. went back to airborne training feet and knees together and knees bent.
Esh. Rough situation you had.
Yeah i call it extreme learning situation.
LOL
Can you set it up with all your equipment on or do it before the hunt?
seansoutdoor ok thank you very much
seansoutdoor God bless you as well
