  • The 2020 Surface604 Rook is a feature-rich and approachable step-through city bike available in two frame sizes and two colors, comes standard with a rear rack, fenders, and Spanninga lights, with a large dealer network in both the US and Canada for test rides and support down the road. A rare combination of a torque sensor with a rear hub motor gives a smooth and responsive riding experience, while the combination of a Suntour suspension fork, Selle Royale gel saddle, ergonomic grips, and the upright relaxed riding position provide a high level of comfort. Solid stopping power thanks to Tektro Auriga hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors and dual-piston calipers, and the Shimano Alivio groupset is an upgrade from previous generations of the Rook, providing a smooth shifting experience. The new display isn't very bright and can be difficult to see in direct sunlight, no puncture protection or reflective sidewall striping on the tires, the charge port is next to the right crank arm, and there is no slap guard on the right chainstay which leaves the paint vulnerable to scratches when going over bumps.

    Hey Guys! We had a couple small errors in the above video. As with all of our videos you can always refer to the full written writeup for the most accurate information, we do our best to get everything right in the video as well but sometimes things get missed! These are the corrections:
    1) The display brightness was a problem for our test bike because we left on the protective film. This film adds quite a bit of glare! If you remove the protective film the visibility is much better. While in direct sunlight it can still be a little difficult to read some of the smaller green text in the corners of the display, but you can swivel the display to further minimize glare and all the important data is using white text with a high contrast ratio and easy to read.
    2) The calipers on this model are actually single-piston (not dual-piston). This isn't a problem, single-piston still provides plenty of stopping power for the type of riding you would do on this bike, and having the larger three-finger levers and hydraulics makes them easy to actuate.
    3) Something that isn't mentioned in detail in the video is the tuning of torque sensitivity, a new feature that is available on the Rook. This is something that dealers and bike shops can do by using diagnostic equipment to update the controller software, which is awesome since some people require a different level of sensitivity for health or medical reasons. Keep in mind that the vast majority of people shouldn't worry about adjusting torque sensitivity since Surface604 preconfigures everything for optimal performance.

    Just bought this. Love it! Do wish it had toe clips on the pedals and the ability to put on a water bottle. I’m guessing I can still mount a water bottle using Velcro and will change pedals for toe clip friendly ones. Other than that, I’m loving it! No excuses now about riding my bike to work. Would take 40 minutes on my mountain bike but under 25 for this bike.

    This is a general question about electric bikes. I was wondering if there was an electric bike that lets you control the amount of pedal assist in each level. I had ridden one and in assist level 1 the bike took off. All levels seemed the same, all or nothing.

    Reminds me of the Amego Infinite Plus but with the preferred Torque sensor. Also a negative is the battery 48V 10.4Ah which is kind of small and no Class 3 28 MPH option.

    What you dont understand is if you have poor leg power these systems don't work ' a cadence system works much better ' but if your legs are in good condition 'you just don't get this fact because to you its so easy ' poor legs by there nature put in very small amounts of power ' so you get back very small amounts of help ' and upping the power takes a lot more out the battery 'reality is go find someone with say a vascular disease 'or who has poor legs for some other reason 'i have owned the cube Bosch intuvia system ' couldn't peddle it 'so know what i am talking about.

      I can't bend my left knee for any sustained period so even pedal cadence power can be a problem and that's why I use a throttle. A torque sensor is useless to me. So for those of us who can't peddle like the non-disabled the onus is on us to factor our particular requirements in to our purchase. We cannot expect a business to put out the time and money for a product that may not sell enough to justify their expense.

    • @stratostear
      @stratostear 4 роки тому

      The problem with cadence sensors is the power comes on in full. For someone with mobility issues it's really unsettling. Then there's the lag before the motor shuts off.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  4 роки тому

      Hi David! Fair point, the trigger throttle is a great way to get started or add power and there are several levels of assist... so I don't think it's a deal-killer, just depends on the type of assist that's preferred. I agree with you though, my preference is either a combined cadence+assist or just cadence because of my knee sensitivity ;)

    For us taller riders get some longer crank arms instead of a longer seat post

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  4 роки тому

      Hi Douglas, that's a good request, but Suzukisan makes a great point about longer crank arms increasing the potential for pedal strikes. It's a balance... and you could easily replace the stock arms (standard length is 170mm) with something like 175mm aftermarket.

      The throttle is removable so if you prefer the throttle on the right hand side you can definitely rearrange it to your liking :)

    • @stratostear
      @stratostear 4 роки тому +1

      @@surface604bikes You can do that. But you'd need to place the throttle next to the grip. Then the shifter, then the brake lever. It would be one or two finger braking that way.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  4 роки тому +1

      This is a trade-off I've seen a lot recently, the challenge is fitting a throttle without pushing the shifters or brake lever in too far. Surface 604 responded saying that you can move the throttle (and you can) but stratostear makes a good point about the reach challenges then. I found that it doesn't take too long to get used to a left-mounted throttle, but there are some skinny throttle options out there from Das-Kit that companies are experimenting with. Maybe there will be an aftermarket upgrade at some point?
