  • The 2020 Surface 604 Shred is a value-priced hardtail cross country style electric mountain bike with 9-speed SRAM 11-34 tooth cassette, plus sized tires, higher top speed of 28 mph, super-responsive torque + cadence sensing bottom bracket, quiet motor, and trigger throttle that overrides assist for full power. Available in two frame sizes for improved fit and comfort, optional 14 amp hour battery upgrade to extend range, optional rear rack, optional fenders, optional suspension seat post, and the bike is pre-wired for an optional rear light. Good sized 180mm hydraulic disc brakes with motor inhibitors on both levers, rear-rack bosses, bright integrated headlight, an adjustable-length kickstand, and decent 100mm spring suspension fork with preload and lockout adjust. More expensive than the prior-year model, stand-over height has been lowered and the paint is updated, charging port on the battery pack is a little vulnerable near the left crank arm, no chain guide or narrow-wide chainring to prevent chain drops, basic 2-amp charger, standard axle diameters and widths vs. boost hub spacing and thru-axles.

      Totally, they did a great job retaining the benefits from V1 and tweaking a few little things to improve the experience that most people wanted. I like that the battery is interchangeable with other Surface 604 models and that they fit 180mm hydraulic disc brakes... good choices on hardware.

    I took my first full ride on my 2020 Shred yesterday and can confirm the bike is amazing. The toque sensor pedal assist is smooth and the bike is just so stable on the trails. The power is very responsive with plenty of power and speed. If you’re older like I am, be aware that you will use more leg power than a bike with a cadence sensor unless you use the throttle, but it is very rewarding - exactly what I wanted. I LOVE IT!

    Best value bike in the range for the past several years for sure. Surface 604, RAD power bikes, other brands in the price range Iike Juiced. This bike served me well and still runs great with upgraded tires.

    Thanks for the great review. If I was going to get an ebike, this seems like the best fit for me. I do have a question about mid-drive vs hub motors. A year or two ago, it seemed like mid-drive motors were the way to go if you could afford it. Compared to two years ago, would the gap between hub vs mid-drive motors be larger or smaller? It seems that hub motors have become smoother and more refined.

    Just test rode this thing and compared it to the Aventon Adventure. I get the appeal of the fat tire bikes but the Shred was so much more nimble and also responsive when pedalling. Thanks also for the explanation of why this bike feels more upright and comfortable on the road. I can also touch flat footed on one foot while on the seat which on some other bikes can not. I may have found my perfect do all ride.

    I got this bike a month ago and I love it! Feel free to message me if you have any questions about it. I do think a more useful n fair comparison would be with another ebike at a similar price point.

    Hey Cort!! We talked last year when I got my Shred! I live in Hbg.with my dog. We had planned to etour the Great Allegheny bike Passage but unfortunately had a set back with my disability...:^(...Another back surgery and rehab shot any plans for 2019 in the butt! Wellll...still toning up but docs say I'm good to go !!! My Shred now has 2200k on it and my only problem was a flat! Thought my front brake might have to be replaced...seems they don't make parts for Tektro brakes! You damage them and you have to replace the whole brake! Luckily we got it back together. Otherwise the Shred has been a great bike...powerful and smooth. Stable as all get out.

    Why don't they offer a 750w motor upgrade?

  • @machfiver753
    @machfiver753 3 роки тому

    So have you sealed the batteries better so they don't allow water ingress? How about a simple Rubber grommet or silicone for where the wiring goes in and out of the frame? You know so they don't allow water and road or off road gravel into the frame and bottom bracket which destroys not only the crank but the expensive torque sensor. How about keeping water out of the display and buttons so they don't corrode and malfunction? All within 3yrs of every single one of these bikes model doesn't seem to matter either. For what you charge you should have better quality controls and better build design. These aren't cheap Canadian tire or Walmart specials.

    Anyone have thoughts on this versus the new Juiced CrossCurrent S2? I realize they're not exactly the same bike, but close enough to be solid competitors

    • @johndem16
      @johndem16 4 роки тому +5

      By looking at Juiced bike specs/performance vs Shred, in the nutshell, Shred is more refined bike, better components i.e. Sram X5, Dorado brakes, Samox BB, 27.5 x 2.8 Patrol, Color display with USB, better and more comfortable geometry. Shred is more of a mountain hardtail bike compared to Juced which is 28 inch slick tires (not mountain bike). Range should be identical if you take 48V14ah battery option for Shred. Acceleration and top speed should be close but slight edge for Shred due to 500W speed specific motor. It can go up to 32mph (52kmh). Those Bafang 750w motors are gutless and cause more problems for the electrical system then 500W. There you go :)

    Yuk... 38 chainring up front??? Good luck with 28mph cadence with that...

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  4 роки тому +4

      It's a higher cadence when you get up to those speeds, but it's doable. I'd rather have some climbing power since it's off-road oriented. It worked great during my rides :)
