Electric bikes: everything you need to know

- We love electric rideables. Hoverboards, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, unicycles, tricycles… You name it, we’ve ridden it. But electric bikes belong in a category of their own because they are more than just a fun tech fad. They could actually be the future of transportation. That said, there’s a lot to choose from out there, and you don’t want to get fooled, so here’s what you need to know.
Around 5:20 in the video, we say that in Europe, class 1 e-bikes are the most popular. Actually, the most popular e-bikes in the EU are unregulated with motors rated at 250W.

Would you replace a car with an electric bike?
Well, I don't have a car to replace 😂
Yaas
Yeah I use an electric scooter instead of a car already
I’d love to but currently I’d want to have a car too, and PT is good in my city to the point where I can get most places I’d bike using that or just walking.
I couldn't afford a Electric Scooter to get me back and forth from work so I had to settle on a 2013 49cc Petrol Scooter at $800 USD 😢 I really want to go 100% Green. I also have to worry about Winter now and my scooter doesn't have knobby tires.
When I went to Europe, I was so surprised by how many people ride bikes. When I went to Amsterdam, there were more bikes than cars. If there were more bike lanes where I live, I would definitely ride more often.
Mind you in the Netherlands there are more bicycles then inhabitants

Volts * Amps = Watts, which is a measure of power (work done per unit time).
Volts * AmpHOURS will give you WattHours, which is a measure of battery capacity. A 500Wh battery can power a 500W motor for 1 hour (minus minor losses due to efficiency).

Yeah actually having any infrastructure would make it way more appealing than the existence of ebikes.
There are not more e-bikes than regular bikes sold in the Netherlands. There is more overall revenue - but that is accounted for by the higher average price.
Liam Duffy You’re right. In 2018, 2 out of 5 bikes sold were e-bikes, and that indeed amounted to 67% of overall revenue. But still, 2 out of 5 ... that’s decent!
@@pixlpionier Yeah, it's huge. From what I understand, e-bikes are outselling electric vehicles 10 to 1 in Europe right now... and that's almost entirely down to the dutchies and germans.
Yeah I was thinking the same, I never noticed a domination of electric bikes whilst in the country. But man, Amsterdam is just bikes *everywhere*
I think if you take recreational bikes like race bikes or ATBs out of this bike sale figure and just look at commuter and city bikes, it’s closer to 3/4 here in The Netherlands. I bike to work (on a non-electric bike) and I’m getting overtaken by everything from grandma’s to school kids on electric bikes all the time 😂
According to Forbes, there were more e bikes sold than regular bikes.
Been commuting on mine for 18 months now. Also, Domino's Australia has been using eBikes for years!

In the Netherlands eBikes are getting common very fast. While the 'young and fit' generation is struggling going up a hill with headwind with a regular bike. All the elderly are going 25 kph (15 mph), looking back triumphantly that they are faster, while taking over...
The more young people are keeping their ebikes because they are getting assistance up the hill. While, the elderly who couldn't get up the hill gave up at a younger age. While the elderly who can keep at it.

One thing to add, you'll still pick up punctures, and on an ebike this can be a chore . The product 'Green Slime' is a self sealing compound you can put in your inner tubes. Also I would also invest in puncture proof tires. Happy e-biking.
This video is my first look into e-bikes at all. Thanks for some of the cool basic knowledge stuff. I appreciate it.
Thanks for putting together this primer. I found it pretty useful in helping me understand the e-bike landscape a little better.
this was really helpful! not even sure I'm going to get an e-bike, but this was extremely comprehensive and definitely makes the task less daunting.
Everyone should have a bike and ebike and apartments should be forced to have bike storage space

@@shrimpgordita nothing wrong with that but I used to do it and would be sweaty when I got to work. That's what made me think of getting an ebike.
@@shrimpgordita You’ll understand after test driving one. The electric assist makes riding effortless, fast and still very fun.
My primary form of transportation is an ebike and it really does make a lot of sense in a city like Portland where there is good enough infrastructure to make it work. It’s got me riding again where I had started to lean more heavily on public transit and now I barely use transit. I think price is a real barrier but if you are planning on going car free then it’s easier to justify the cost. People justify spending thousands of dollars on a lot of stuff it just depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Of course it will seem expensive if you are only looking at it as a toy or something for recreation....that’s fine of course but it really can work as primary transportation as long as you have the right gear to make it work.
I got a V1 flashbike with a GPS on it so nobody can steal it not only is it reliable but it is theft proof
Great overview. Love ebikes, thank you!

Thank You for the informative comprehensive review..
Take a look at hero town master . Lovely ,branded and cheap
The biggest problem for e-bikes is theft, in places like victoria bc and vancouver there are bike thieves all over, thats the number one reason why i havnt gotten one yet, sure they are great for a joy ride but if you wanna take it downtown and go for a meal or a drink or coffee, theres a good chance your bike could get stolen if it's not within view for you.
I wonder if, as society and cities change, some car parks can start being replaced with bicycle parking.

ebikes are the way to go, save alot money, its alot fun and healther choice, can buy one with throttle or just pedal assist , ebikes goes up to 15g you can customize them with duel suspension or make it carbon fiber, ebikes is best choice to drive to work and a family activity,
Electric Bikes could be the future. But we need to change the roads to make them more friendly to make that future happen. Most people are too afraid to ride their bikes next to a car. We need to upgrade the bike lane so all people feel comfortable riding their bikes anywhere.
in the Netherlands people travel next to cars too. just gotta set speed limits and make cars responsible no matter what. and you'll have suicidal cyclist too.
100%
I agree fully with you, but one of the benefits of ebikes is that they make up for some of the problems our roads have right now. It is a lot less scary and dangerous to navigate some narrow busy bit of road with no shoulder when you can basically keep up with traffic when needed. Even class 2 bikes can greatly reduce the number of cars you need to interact with just by increasing speed a little, while still keeping effort reasonably low.
I almost have 6000km on my e-bike

Our roads were actually first intended for horses and bikes. Cars were prioritized much later
E-Bikes are a great way to get around but where can you securely charge them? Parkent Cycles is the first company to coming out with charging stations that can securely charge every e-bike on the market.

In China, riding an electric bicycle is more convenient than driving, because it is too crowded everywhere in China, there is a large population and every family has a car, so if I don't go far, I like riding an electric bicycle
Excellent summary!
Especially with the ongoing oil petrol crisis. E bikes can be the future.
Great video - expertly explained. I run an eBike tour company, so I know what I’m talking about 🙂
And on that subject, here’s my 5 cents: I totally get the advantages of mid-drive and of torque sensors (in fact I’ve got a bike with that set up, and it’s great). But if you want to experience the most fun (“wheeee”!) feeling on an eBike - go for a rear hub motor with a cadence sensor. And ideally with a throttle as well as pedal assist (if your country’s regulations allow that). Guaranteed fun! 😎

Is it easier to pedal an ebike from a full stop, can I use the throttle to move it forward? I usually roll on stop signs, just because it takes a long time to start going again from a full stop.

Ever heard the expression "The best things in life are free"? Well, the second best things are really exspensive.
You do you, but I think of it like a car. It's a big expensive transportation cost, so of course I should finance it instead of buying outright. Personal finance is for personal infrastructure.
