Sample alert right off the bat. Eric B and Rakim- Microphone Fiend
One of the funkiest songs of the decade!! These bruddahs weren't "average"!
Prior to this song, nobody on the face of the earth ever thought, 'hmmm, sleigh bells are funky', and then this song dropped. That bass line, holy shit, those two guitar tracks panned left and right, man. There's so much room to breath in this track. It's fonky like an open hamper, fonky like a dirty pamper. One of their best tracks imho.
Hey JJ, Nice reaction to "School Boy Crush," props to you my friend...You mentioned the nasty bass line; the drummer was right in the pocket playing that funky beat and the funky horns (saxophones) discreetly interjecting their parts...However, I just wanted to point out these little details that made this track different & special: the Sleigh Bells at the beginning, in the middle & at the end of the song (Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer plays this while leading Santa's Sleigh every Christmas Eve!!!), the alphabet & number countdown as well as the School Boy's Whistle at the end is absolute FIRE!!! AWB always brought the SOUL & The HARD FUNK!!!
This was my favorite from AWB. So glad I got to see them in the 70's. My first experience of going to a concert.
Too $hort sampled this for "Life is...Too Short.". Great call on "Halftime" tho!
Special Ed sample this for his song Think About It in 1989;Helter Skelter is a song From The Beatles in 1968 from there White Album .
After “Pick Up The Pieces” this is my favorite “AWB” Joint! Helter Skelter is a movie about serial killer Charles Manson. I remember watching when I was a child, and they would play this Beatles song called Helter Skelter, it’s was scary and eerie! Peace!
My mom wouldn't let me watch it 🤣🤣🤣
@@carl_tuckerson9701 👍🏽 I think it was for the best Lol. Peace!
A W B so funky scottish refried funk top quality they groove hard always on the one
That slow funky bass line is the shiz!! Carries the whole song. Imagine trying to sing while you were laying that down!
This is AWB at the top of their game. I got to see them live when they were on their "Soul Searchin" tour in 1976 (you must check out this album).
I am so blessed, and I still whistle the end of this song.
Iconic!
Nothing average about these dudes period.
Hi, young man, I was lucky enough to see this band live twice, they are fabulous musicians, and sound amazing live. They come from Dundee in Scotland, and had great success in America, in the seventies, I'm glad you enjoyed their sound. Great reaction. Take care. ✌
Teena Marie was "Vanilla Soul" and AWB is "Vanilla Funk".
They called it "Blue-Eyed Soul" at the station where I worked back in the 70's. The request lines rang off the hook for this number! 🎵
Brilliant Scottish band.
"I was a fiend...before I became a teen, meltin' microphones instead of cones of ice cream" - Rakim
This is a deep groove. Hamish wearing a kilt with the horns & bass driving is a fantastic video.
Love this tune, great choice.
From that same album, you need to react to the title cut: "Cut The Cake!!!"
Check the live version of Cut the Cake from their Person to Person album. It’s a little bit funkier version, and a really great live song!
Helter Skelter was a roller coaster in Britain (& a song by the Beatles)
Got to do Cut the Cake next. I don't believe you've done it yet.
Check the live version of Cut the Cake from their Person to Person album. It’s a little bit funkier version, and a really great live song!
The first hip-hop band to sample this was in the 80s - Eric B & Rakim "Microphone Fiend" give it a listen. That was actually the first time I heard that bass/guitar/bells and I thought it was sooo funky with Eric B's scratching on top of it.. But then I was listening to AWB many years later and once I heard School Boy Crush I was like daaaaammnnnnnnn they sampled it from these funky Scottish boys! Crazy crazy....
Loved AWB since high school. Good memories.
Best version is their double live album.. This is good. Live version BLOWS IT AWAY. I went and saw Tower of Power dwb had just gotten back together to tour with Tower of Power gwb opened up the show in a standing-room-only venue in San Francisco... After AWB got done tower of power came out took a bow and said goodnight we ain't followin that s*** LOL of course they did follow Tower of Power toward up to and then awv came out and they did three or four songs together one of the best concerts I've ever seen
Helter Skelter is the name of a classic British carnival ride…
Stopped in for my weekly funk nastiness ! This has been sampled to death since 1975,,I can still hear it in my 1970 Thunderbirds 4 speaker stereo system lol, duel time signatures in this is some funk genius too !
🤩👍👍👍AWB's Funk/R&B Jazz at its finest! Thanks J.J., I've been waiting for you to hear this. It's one of my top faves of their many great songs. LOVE these guys. ✌
I just love this group and their style, not from America (do not care). They had it going on back in the day. Thanks for playing this jam.
So many utterly brilliant tracks in their huge back catalogue. Try Catch Me & Shine from 'the Shine' album. I have everything that they ever recorded, including on vinyl right back from the start.
One of their early songs is called “Nothing You Can Do”, well worth checking out.
Best songs that sampled this are Microphone Fiend and Life Is Too Short. 🔥🔥
I smelled the funk and hadn’t even turned on my tablet yet!
That beat was also sampled by TOO SHORT on his album life is too short
Sampled a bazillion times.
You cooking with grease on this one!!!
That beat is banging!!
X Clan Grand Verbalized What Time is it sampled this..
Also sampled by Eric B and Rakim Microphone Fiend.
These guys originated a classic Chaka Khan jam, 'wotcha gonna do for me'. Legends
One of their best cuts.....heavily sampled.....Too Short for Life is Too Short is one....
Yeah 😍
Cut the Cake was a slow smokin song !!!
Check the live version of Cut the Cake from their Person to Person album. It’s a little bit funkier version, and a really great live song!
This is Rakim & Eric B. sampled from from!!!!!!!!
Now you have to react to Cloudy by AWB. A totally different vibe but a great song also.
I remember this jam in elementary school. My crush was on this girl named Rhoda. My best friend's sister.
Stanley, did you walk her home after school, or were y'all on the DL?.......
A few times. My parents were strict.
@@stanleymoss7392 Thanks for the reply...
You need to react to Person to Person by AWB. That is a funky jam.
Love this song! Check out I'm the One from their live album.
Now ya funkin' JJ ! ( more AWB please)......
Jackpot again ! That bass is absolutely the creation of life ! Bottom of the groove is so important to what I love in music ! Namely funky wunky , R&B, Jazz, lol, everything ! Unfortunately its not as prominent in today's music, and partly why I not much of a fan. If you listen to couple more of these, you will be a Jedi !
I saw the title and rush to it. Thank you!!!
I got to see them 3 times. The drummer, Steve Ferrone went on to play with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.
Also sampled by TLC, for ain't to proud to beg
In England a Helter Skelter is a roller coaster
You gotta be moving
When AWB is grooving! 🕺
awb... they was the dope back then!
Fav!!! Have you listened to Queen of my soul?
Health skelter a the words that Charles Manson Followers wrote on the walls in blood after they committed those murders And it's a song by The Beatles
Every body from Eric B and Rakim to TLC sampled this joint
Sleaze funk. Love this.
Eric B used this beat for Rakim Microphone fien
