Robbie McIntosh played drums on this song. It was recorded in 1974, and released in July 1974. Robbie McIntosh died of a heroin overdose at an LA party a few months later on the 23rd September 1974. The bands bass player Alan Gorrie also OD'd at that party...but Cher kept him conscious and walking around until medics arrived, probably saving his life. The song went to the top of the singles charts in the USA in February 1975, so unfortunately the drummer didnt live to see it and the band become successful.

Love this. My fav in High School. There are a number of great soul instrumentals. Green Onions by Booker T and the MG's is the one that sets the tone for the rest. Let the B3 set you free!

They're really mostly referencing James Brown's '70s band. Brutally infectious, joyful and funky at the same time. If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, you should hear the soundtrack to "Superbad," which overflows with the same groove-centric funk. And, while I know you guys focus on the hits and deep cuts of yesteryear, there's a tune called "Copchase" by an Austin band called Grooveline Horns. It's a tribute to this and others like it (especially a great TV theme that filled the dance floors of the early '70s called "The Theme from S.W.A.T"). I think we owe a lot of these sounds to JB, Sly, and Tower of Power - all undisputed masters of the dance floor throwdown.

The Funky Scotsmen!!!!! "A standard deviation and a half", hahaha! Andy the Engineering Student! For me, it's the bass, all the horns in general, and then the sax solo at the end!! These guys are still killing it! You can find them wherever you hear 70's soul/funk acts playing!

All right! About time guys! The funkiest band from Scotland. One of the few instrumental songs to every hit #1 on the charts. James Brown thought it was his band when he first heard them on the radio.
Check out their songs School Boy Crush(the funkiest use of a jingle stick, and the bass hits so hard), Cut the Cake and Cloudy(from their Person to Person live album are the best versions that sound incredible! Hamish smashes those high notes on Cloudy.), Work to Do(a great Isley Brothers remake), A Love of Your Own(great love ballad), Let's Go 'Round Again.

The AWB was a Scottish funk & R&B band that had a series of soul & disco hits between 74-80. They had some good songs such as "When Will You Be Mine", "Let's Go Around Again" & "Cut The Cake". But the instrumental song "Pick Up The Pieces" in 1975 was their biggest hit.

This was on the radio constantly when I was a little kid and now that I am an older musician, it really is pretty amazing to me that they had a hit with not just this one but another one called Cut the Cake, and they were both instrumentals! Wow. Both of them got played on the radio constantly. It's just so catchy and so well done and it feels so good. Not to mention that it is an awesome logo, laugh.

(Not your) Average White Band . It is kind of like Wild Cherry. I'm not sure I can say it's like Stevie Wonder, but it is a fun listen. Great groove. Good drums but I love the sax in the middle. This should be a warmup for BHM Livestream part 2. Looking forward to hearing For the Love of Money by the O'Jays.

This is the music they use during the opening credits of "Spirit of '76" which is a comedy from the early 90s in which people from the future set out on a mission to go to 1776 to learn about the founding of our country after all history has been erased in their dystopian time. Due to a malfunction they end up in 1976 and the hilarity ensues! I recommend this movie to anyone who was old enough to remember 1976 as they will get all the jokes. I'm afraid anyone not around then or old enough to remember might not get all the humor, but it's full of cameos by stars who were big in the 70s and of course has plenty of awesome mid 1970s music.

The bass player Alan Gorrie hails from my home town of Perth, Scotland. They are all Scots and the vocalist/gutarist Hamish Stewart went on to play in Paul McCartney's band. You mentioned the drummer Robbie Macintosh who sadly died shortly after this was made from the usual rock excesses. He was replaced by the great Steve Ferrone. Not bad for a bunch of white Scots guys.
