Growing up in the 70s it was so easy to take these kinds of gems for granted. They were just in the air - particles in the ether - and you just strolled through time and space breathing them in and grooving along your merry way.

Robbie McIntosh played drums on this song. It was recorded in 1974, and released in July 1974. Robbie McIntosh died of a heroin overdose at an LA party a few months later on the 23rd September 1974. The bands bass player Alan Gorrie also OD'd at that party...but Cher kept him conscious and walking around until medics arrived, probably saving his life. The song went to the top of the singles charts in the USA in February 1975, so unfortunately the drummer didnt live to see it and the band become successful.

They're really mostly referencing James Brown's '70s band. Brutally infectious, joyful and funky at the same time. If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, you should hear the soundtrack to "Superbad," which overflows with the same groove-centric funk. And, while I know you guys focus on the hits and deep cuts of yesteryear, there's a tune called "Copchase" by an Austin band called Grooveline Horns. It's a tribute to this and others like it (especially a great TV theme that filled the dance floors of the early '70s called "The Theme from S.W.A.T"). I think we owe a lot of these sounds to JB, Sly, and Tower of Power - all undisputed masters of the dance floor throwdown.

Love this. My fav in High School. There are a number of great soul instrumentals. Green Onions by Booker T and the MG's is the one that sets the tone for the rest. Let the B3 set you free!

All right! About time guys! The funkiest band from Scotland. One of the few instrumental songs to every hit #1 on the charts. James Brown thought it was his band when he first heard them on the radio.
Check out their songs School Boy Crush(the funkiest use of a jingle stick, and the bass hits so hard), Cut the Cake and Cloudy(from their Person to Person live album are the best versions that sound incredible! Hamish smashes those high notes on Cloudy.), Work to Do(a great Isley Brothers remake), A Love of Your Own(great love ballad), Let's Go 'Round Again.

Can’t sit still when AWB is playing, funky grooving musical genius’s. Older bro had this album when it came out in ‘74. Was great to be youngest sib of 4 who all loved music. “Cut the Cake” is another great tune!🎶❤️

This was on the radio constantly when I was a little kid and now that I am an older musician, it really is pretty amazing to me that they had a hit with not just this one but another one called Cut the Cake, and they were both instrumentals! Wow. Both of them got played on the radio constantly. It's just so catchy and so well done and it feels so good. Not to mention that it is an awesome logo, laugh.

I'm a new subscriber and I am immediately hooked. I'm 55 and from Philly this is a extremely musical town. I grew up listening to AWB and every funk, r&b, and blue eyed soul band/group. Listening to these songs and watching young people reacting and learning this music brings me joy❤❤❤

As a teenager, I can honestly say, besides the great funky music, that "W" on the album cover really caught my eye! I'm probably not the only dude who put that album cover "exposed" on the book shelf, to look at while grooving to the vibes with a doobie in hand. Oh, the 70's!

The AWB was a Scottish funk & R&B band that had a series of soul & disco hits between 74-80. They had some good songs such as "When Will You Be Mine", "Let's Go Around Again" & "Cut The Cake". But the instrumental song "Pick Up The Pieces" in 1975 was their biggest hit.

The Funky Scotsmen!!!!! "A standard deviation and a half", hahaha! Andy the Engineering Student! For me, it's the bass, all the horns in general, and then the sax solo at the end!! These guys are still killing it! You can find them wherever you hear 70's soul/funk acts playing!
