GRINDING FIBERGLASS INSIDE THE BOAT IS NEVER FUN… - Sailing NZ pt 2

  • In this episode we continue to grind fiberglass inside the forepeak of the boat where the deck tore away from the hull, which is NEVER fun...
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!

Hearing you talk so positively about your father has me in tears. My only childhood regret was not having that relationship with my dad.... He was diagnosed with MS while I was in college and suffocated to death in 2020... I regret not having many positive things to say about my dad and I know he loved me. I didn't do a very good job of loving him back!!! I'm sorry, Dad!!

Hey Bry, when your were born he loved you and while you were finding out all the why's in life he loved you. But as we get older we needed to find our ways. Dads are just bigger kids in older bodies also finding their way through life as you are now.. yes he loved you from the start but dads never tell you, that makes you stronger..lover.

You can buy a cheap diaphragm air compressor and run a small hose to a mask or even your respirator and keep a positive air flow at all times. This would keep any infiltration of the crap and lessen your exposure . Your long term health from exposure to these fibres and fumes could be for worse to your health than the short term exposure. This is just a cheap example of automotive painter supplied air system . Should cost less the a couple hundred bucks and can throw in the boat when done and use many times. Please be safe and enjoy your travels as your good health is priceless .

Your dad definitely loved you from the moment you were born. Having MS is a complicated and disabling condition...he would've been feeling very bad about himself and his life. Hopefully you'll be able to pay forward your love to another young man or your own child.

The worst part of growing up is leaving home, the best part is coming back for a visit. I remember in a previous episode you showed us the home your father built in the traditional Japanese style. It truly is a stunning home and the view is incredible. You are always so gracious to share what your life with us. What a wonderful life you and your friends get to live. I hope from now on your boat remains strong and safe.
I remember the taste of red snapper, there is nothing like it, and I wonder if I will ever taste it again. I rather doubt it as I am in my 70’s but the memory remains.

Colin, this ep had me in happy tears, I am a older chook now, but memories of the many times sailing to the barrier flooded back & then there was that time me & mates hired a dodgy seaplane to party overnight on the barrier for a resident mates birthday.......
That plane scared the bejesus out of me & I opted to catch the ice boat to Lee & hitch home to Auckland - the seas were frigging huge and the Skipper & Mate were so sick - so this Kiwi chick helmed until waters calmed & Skip could step up.
Cool memories, thanks for sparking them ❤❤❤

Colin your family home is magnificent.
And your dad is a master craftsmen (not that you need me to tell you that). A truly inspiring guy.
I was super close to my dad. Sadly he died 7 years ago. He was 84 though and lived an amazing life. He couldn’t build a spice rack but he taught me to sail and ski before I was hardly old enough to speak… and he climbed mountains in his youth.
I want to follow in your footsteps and sail round the world and you tube it. I know my dad would have been both proud and fascinated by my plans.

Positive pressure anti-glass mask - When I was in surgery a few days weeks ago I noticed a flap opening and closing in the little room I was in before I went into the big room with the sharp stuff, all the people, and all the big-screen monitors. I asked about it, and they said it was "filtered positive air pressure" to keep the pesky germs out of the room. The point was you could open the door, and none of the unwashed masses outside in the corridor could get all up-side your self. It should be easy enough to rig your compressor to blow constant air into a facemask. That way you would be pushing fresh air into your mask, and nothing would get in past the face hair, and wrinkles, or any extra chins you'll one day develope :). It might even be nice to have the breeze. A lightweight hose like the kind you use in fish tank air supplies would do it with a compressor powering it (I'm guessing you would only need maybe 20L a minute or so (I think a lungful of air is 8L)), so it wouldn't be too much of a drag on your head as you move around. It might be a little loud, but that's easy enough to fix, and much less itchy and lung wrecking than breathing glass where you should be breathing air. - Just a thought.

This will be time number 4 when I've seen this beauty of a sailors camp. I think last time they mentioned a Smokehouse bay. I've found it. An extremely cool place and from what I've seen VERY BUSY. Not surprised ! I had actually found a complete ringer wash machine. Gave it to some native americans who wanted to work with hides. I cook nearly everything here inside a wood fired cookstove. I just love the flavor of smoke. I just cooked a huge rack of lamb, pretty darn tasty !

Hey Colin, after lots of different methods of PPE I now use an army gas mask. It's amazing, full face and my suit hood seals around mask. No glass getting in, great visibility and no itching after🙂

Your family's home is fantastic Colin. To think your dad did that all is crazy. He has a great vibe about him too. Your mom is funny and is full of life. Cheers to you, your family and the Parlay family Colin.
