Well Jonathan has decided for another go at Matt. For those of you new to this caller he was the topic of my two videos entitled God Makes Me Happy Part 1 and Part 2. It appears the time between calls didn't do Jonathan much good, because he picks up right where he left off. He wants Matt to say there is nothing wrong with him believing in an Unfalsifiable God as long as it makes him happy. Matt on the other hand continues to tell Jonathan that truth is more important than what makes you happy, and that truth must not be important to him. Jonathan continues with his unfalsifiable god, and his unfalsifiable soul, and his unfalsifiable . . . . AAAAAAH! If I go a hundred years without hearing the word unfalsifiable it will be too soon. Enjoy.

Lol, i keep picturing Samuel L. Jackson with a gun, shouting:
" Say *unfalsafiable* again, muthafucker! I dare you. Say it just one more time..."
😂😂😂😂😂😂
This caller has superhuman powers of self delusion.
Indeed.... his superhuman powers of self delusion are unfalsifiable.
Kent Fletcher Aaaahhhh, I see what you did there...
his calls are the best though. he's at least trying to be logical.
jody hoffman No, he uses words that sound like they are borrowed from logic, but at no point does he attempt to use logic in any rational understanding of the word. His problem is that he needs to do a philosophy class and learn what the concepts he uses actually mean. So long as his fundamental definitions of language and philosophy are diametrically opposed to their actual definitions then he is only ever going to be able to talk rather than communicate. I think he possibly prefers a masturbatory talkfest rather than deep thought and attempting to understand the issues at hand. This applies as much to his inner dialog as it does to talking with other people.
"It is often tragic to see how blatantly a man bungles his own life and the lives of others yet remains totally incapable of seeing how much the whole tragedy originates in himself, and how he continually feeds it and keeps it going." Carl Jung
If you don't care about truth there is no reasoning.
I love when callers think they've made a great point, and Matt starts taking it apart and the caller obviously panics and interrupt-trolls.
I don't think that is what Jonathan is doing. I think that his education has failed him so badly that he honestly believes his desire to be happy is just as good of evidence as anything else there is. Unfortunately critical thinking is not a very common skill among humans. As I've heard somewhere before, "Do you believe intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe?" "I'm not sure it exists HERE."
Tim Casey I don't see how what you said is much different than what I said. I wasn't making a psychological conclusion or anything, I simply said I find it funny how theists get all flustered when their assertions get taken apart. You don't think that happened here? Sure sounded that way to me.
@@davids11131113 Still, he is not trolling, as that implies insincerity, having only a desire to mess with people for the sake of doing so.
It's disturbing how desperate some people will be to believe in god. It seems like he's exhibiting the early signs of PTSD. This just demonstrates how harmful religion is, it makes people so dependent on it that they are willing to do things that they know is irrational because they can't live without it.
Luiz Claudio de Souza Querido I can't believe that twat VerticalHorizon insulted your command of the English language. Just curious from your name but do you speak Spanish as well, and which was your first language?
Luiz Claudio de Souza Querido Is Luiz Claudio de Souza Querido your real name or a literary reference or what?
Luiz Claudio de Souza Querido
LoL, my name is Bob Dombrowski.
Not quite as poetic.
Luiz Claudio de Souza Querido I don't have a facebook, so... no.
EnigmaHood well said!
i love jen's way of questioning...stomped his ass
greenytaddict They all have their unique strong points and I think that's what really makes the show.
The way he's talking reminds me of how I felt right before I accepted there is no god. I had realized it, but due to my indoctrination was uncomfortable with it. I remember telling my husband that I didn't really care if t was true, I wanted to believe it for the time being. I wonder what this guy believes today.
And this is why I actually think atheists should be more sympathetic to these people instead of berating them with demands for evidence. I know I went through this same process many many years ago, and these people are, quite literally, going through a grieving process. You know how they say the first stage of grief is denial. This is what you're seeing. It's actually very serious, and this process is extremely emotional for a lot of people, as it was for me.
If I were on this show, I would've simply encouraged him to keep studying and researching issues in science, the arguments for and against God, philosophy, other religions, etc. I would say, sure, you can believe whatever makes you happy, dude. That's your personal choice... But, I think you might find that the *truth* is more beautiful and fulfilling than a delusion if you just gave it a chance. Grieve if you have to, but try to recognize the importance in holding beliefs that are likely to be true as opposed to deluding yourself because you think it feels good to you.
You'll get used to truth.
Reason is comforting.
Many of the founders were non theistic.
You are not on shaky ground.
the same thing happened to me - I hung on by my fingernails until the last possible minute when i just couldn’t lie to myself anymore
RabbleCat you make some excellent points - I wish they had some hosts like you on this show
This call points to my belief that everything that anyone does is only for selfish reasons.
"I ate an orange this morning ... (some weird cerebral transubstantiation) ... therefore god exists." WTF?
There's my argument for birth control and eugenics.
And advocating birth control and eugenics makes you as bad as religion unless birth control is left wholly in the hands of the woman it effects , otherwise it is slavery as is rampant in 8 states of the so called free and liberal USA
@@ossiedunstan4419 Defending people eating meat and thereby raping & torturing & murdering animals makes you infinitely worse than somebody whose political views are not even reality yet. There is nothing with eugenics: the voluntary choice of whom to procreate with. The evil is procreation itself: forcing nonconsenting humans into existence to suffer & die one day without their consent.
Agreed. I PROUDLY support mandatory abortion and mandatory vasectomy laws upon all conservatives.
@@theultimatereductionist7592 I dont think you understand mandatory abortion and vasectomy are not classed the same but should be applied to every one who believes in a pedo king in the sky.
maybe then we will have chance to return earth to its former climate glory, Look closer at those opposing climate science they are all god believers.
God believers want the earth and all life on it to die out , so then when theirs no one around they can claim see the book had on thing right.
Religions are death cults , jesus replaced the sacrificial goat not because it had more kick but because people where sick and tired of wasting good milking goats to village bullshit claims bye the witch doctor.
If you believe in religious rubbish you have not evolved from 2,000 odd years ago ,hows it feel to be evolutionary throwback.
Ossie Dunstan I genuinely can’t tell if any of you are serious; Poe’s Law raises its ugly head again.
I cant finish this video, this guy drives me crazy.
I'm 40 seconds in and thinking the same thing
Agreed
Taking heroin gives you pleasure, stopping taking heroin once you're addicted causes pain, keeping someone who is braindead and will never recover alive costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, letting them go will cost nothing and their organs can help other people improve their quality of life. The generalizations make sense, but there are plenty of other things that are exceptions.
Jonathan becomes less and less intelligent with every call.
"convinced from within"? sounds a lot like "deluding myself"
i respect this caller, gives me hope that I am definitely not the stupidest human alive
This guy's ability to apply logic is unfalsifiable.
Imagine this: Matt has to hear people like this everyday. He must be a genius.
+What is it you believe about the afterlife?"
-Well it's more life"
LOOOL These people are so damn scared of death it's actually pretty sad, they can't live without imagining there must be life after death, they can't cope with the idea that there might just be nothing.
4:40 "I ate an orange. I like the taste of oranges. Therefore I am justified in eating oranges."
He is saying he likes believing in god.
The question to ask is why does he like believing in the gods?
Jen: Excuse me, because he ate an orange. - LOL!
This may be one of my faves, such surgery and kindness.
How in the world could there be an after life? When a person is deceased how in the world can they live on? A soul? Where? There has been no discoveries in science or in the medical profession of a soul. Think about this. The heart no longer beats and the brain is shut down. The logical and rational conclusion is "your dead". I feel so certain , I would say I am 100 percent certain that when people die, they die forever. So that is not pleasant but it is true. So what should we do? How about living a life of purpose and passion. That is what I am going to do.
My friend, there is that inner part of you (your spirit, ambitions and motivations, your conscience and love) - that part that live inside your physical body will go on after the heart sops beating, and if you are unsure where you will be after your physical part stop to exist - I suggest you need to know the living God, and have his spirit :) to be saved
I don't believe that based on the fact that there is no evidence of it, none.
Eugene Koshanof Those things which you attribute to a 'soul' are products of my body, my brain and my memory. When they stop working, I will die and such information will be lost.
Do you have any evidence to suggest otherwise?
Or do you simply believe it because you like it?
RoganJericho Yes, your soul could be considered as you personality, your ambitions, your motivation and your brain work. It is all combined together, and when you die each will be judged according to our heart MOTIVES. Imagine yourself being caught doing something wrong, and they can see you through.
Eugene Koshanof
Yes, you told me your OPINIONS in your previous post.
I'm looking for EVIDENCE.
Without evidence, I cannot distinguish your opinions from delusions, or stories.
How can I compare your claims to reality?
I've said this before, I admire you people from the Atheist Experience for being so incredibly patient and for the need of a better word, nice, despite the fact that these christians callers keep arguing in a totally nonsensical manner. They seem to keep wanting to attack, instead of entering a reasonable discussion, and keep wanting to aggressively defend their point of view, especially when they can no longer follow the logical and reasonable arguements presented to them. They just stumble and fall, but still they want to defend their position of something they are obvioulsy not sure about. I understand that people want to believe that there is a god, that he she or it, died for our sins so that we can enter heaven upon death, as long as we '*believe', but I have to tell all those christians who think that way, that to believe is very easy, to take responsibility for our thoughts, actions and indeed volition, is a lot harder, but that is what we need to do as mature adults.
" your caring about the truth is insufficient"
I am going to steal that quote.
Letting go of wanting to "believe" has many powerful impulses working against it.
"The after-life is an extension of...it's more life."
Sooo, every moment you're alive is "more life" so we're all in the "after-life." Cool.
Believing in god is no different than believing in Santa Claus, most of us stop believing in Santa Claus but some still cling on the former
+Poseidon63 The caller seems interested but confused. Still has that "What's in it for me?" mindset of a theist. He also contradicts himself at the end, if believing in a god makes him happy, truly makes him happy than why would he be looking for answers outside of his belief?
To a theist it is all, me me me, I'm so special, me me me.
Santa is a mini God but basicly very close and is didtiguisable to children enough to in force the God concept
i want an orange
nur arief an unfalsifiable orange? They aren’t so tasty as the falsifiable ones.
That funny noise at 3:27 is timed so perfectly. It fits right into the discussion.
“I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But as much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking.” - Carl Sagan
At least this caller seemed like he wasn't dismissing the atheist position out of hand.
Ah. So you should believe in something just because it makes you happy. Does that mean that I should believe that there's a million dollars buried in my back yard? Or that I will wake up tomorrow and be 15 years younger? I'm sure I would be very happy if I believed those things. Is that a good reason to believe in them?
Alva Goldbook thing is, you couldn’t choose to believe those things you listed even if you wanted to.. belief isn’t a choice. This guys an idiot
Tide goes in tide goes out, the caller definitely can't explain that
Love that he references Ramachandran, his work is truly astounding.
I feel like I have something spiritually in common with the caller, perhaps it's that I'm also not allergic to oranges. this has to be the work of Jebus. And Dog. It's too unlikely for it to be a coincidence. This, therefore is proof of miracles, and therefore the word of Dog and the Bible.
Well it made more sense than what he said anyway.
" he ate an orange" I am dying here
Why isn’t the caller trying to make “the link” himself?
and...
Why does the caller need Matt’s approval to continue with his belief? It seems like throughout the call, he was seeking Matt’s permission to hold on to his world view.
Yeah it's weird. Why did he give every possible justification except for truth if he actually does care about truth? Why lie about caring about something you don't actually care about? Like, I wouldn't lie and say I care about having faith. That would just be absurd.
Jen clearly doesn't have OCD. There is something to be said about learning to live with uncertainty. :)
"That which is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence."
I love the thumbnail on this. Matt goes RAAHRR!
Wow am I ever glad I had oranges in the house while I watched this.
YES... there is a direct link to something negative. If you believe is something without any evidence then you have compromised your ability to think logically and therefore are a liability.
Jonathan- Expert at moving goal posts....he should go work in the NFL.
Right at the end there I was really feeling for the guy, the transition to understand that some truths are painful can't be easy for the religious when they finally start questioning their own faith.
It won't be easy, but the world as a whole will one day benefit from this understanding.
Matt should have told him that if the man agrees that he cannot get the unfalsifyable reason for his continued search of the unfalsifyable... it is now time for him to start looking for the reason for THE WANT ITSELF. Why does he have a desire, a need, a WANT to search for something (like God) that he CANNOT find, prove, or know. If the man starts searching for THAT answer, he may come to find that he CAN know the answer for the 'need itself'....... and maybe that answer will put to rest his agitation/frustration. I have a strong feeling that the answer lies in the same fear as we all have... of DEATH. ;)
"Religion is the minds immune system against it's fear of death." -Ben Tinkin
I have no clue why a person like this would call Axp O.O
Wow! Jenn's last question really got to the heart of the matter. I don't think they "lost" the caller, I think he bailed.
For sure
Sounds like a fart at about 12:54
Yeah..Jonathon had a brain fart
Smells like one too!
I like Jen's question at the end there. "Why would belief in something you can't demonstrate to be true give you hope and happiness?"
If the belief in question is in the existence of an afterlife, then it is likely attributed to a person's fear of being finite with a loss of existence/ purpose upon ceasing to be alive. Anything with life "tends" to favor life and the concept of an afterlife grants that sense of immortality. It is difficult to measure the implications this belief has on someone's life, but as Matt and Jen pointed out, it doesn't get us closer to the truth.
"You would do something that gives you pain?" First thought is, "Oh, my." Second thought is, "Ask firefighters, soldiers, or any living organ donor (among other people) about voluntarily doing something painful."
Who keeps oranges in the fridge? Psychos, that's who.
l am with you there. Room temp is so much better.
Psycho here.
Conclusion: Orange, so god.
+Jesus Martinez It's so obvious!
Mead! Therefore Odin!
No More "Listen Reason" at the beginning of TAE videos... Just start the video at the beginning of the segment... There is no reason to have that damn song played EVERY SINGLE VIDEO.... We have heard the song, we can hear the song if we watch the full episode. The song needs to go from the beginning of these youtube clips #NOMORELISTENTOREASON
"Demonstrate for me a 4-dimensional thing on a 3-dimensional plane."
"I know that your God does not exist, but I cannot demonstrate it."
I believe I'm sleeping with a top model and driving an Aston Martin, it makes me feel good.
'I love Jesus'-
Yes it's my 'choice'....not really a choice at all either since what you're asserting as 1 side of that choice has not been demonstrated to be any more real than any other cartoon characters in any other books. You believe the 1 myth out of many thousands of similar myths which is the most familiar and comfortable to YOU....without any other demonstrable basis for that belief.
Not only that but I don't think he's also factored in that another reason (possibly the main reason) he believes what he does is due to where he was born. Where you were born affects what religion you are most influenced by from either friends/family but also schools and (I'll use the term lightly here, I'm aware of the many different names for places of prayer, but for the sake of not having to name them all, just call it church.) church.
Mike Welch Many theist callers even admit this when they're questioned about why they're calling in as a Christian, and not a Muslim or a Hindu or whatever, they admit they were taught it, so at that point they can't even say it's a decision they made they admit it was indoctrination.
When somebody says they love "Jesus" what is there rational for this. How do you love an entity you cannot see or engage.. You read a book and fall in love with the main character.. How does a critical thinking person reconcile this love..Is it self delusion or celebrity fantasy.. If somebody says they Love "Jesus" more than there own family ,i would consider them insane.. But they do say that.. Indoctrination is pure poison if it alters reality to this point...
Just tell the guy that his beliefs affect his actions unconsciously, ffs.
So, what he’s saying is it’s better to have a happy delusional then a reality we can prove. Kind of childish and pathetic.
Well that's religion in a nutshell .
I really liked this one. It is so hard to get through to people that are so deeply attached to something for emotional, social and financial reasons and a total lack independence and logic
20:48 “Based on what, BTW?” 😂🍊
Jonathan is a chore to listen to!
belief is just something you hope for or want to be true when you don't know. lets be honest about that. Now that basically means no one wants the bible god to be real or true. No one! Even devote believers! Because the bible god make Satan look like a pussy cat in comparison to his evil. This is why there is 10000 different christen dominations because that book is pure evil and nothing (NOTHING!) in it is worth saying as TRUTH. I have more respect for someone who believes in a god but does not get anything for any evil holy book as word of him or her.
an evil holy book, that makes a lot of sence
dan katla iceland sharpe tell that to Christians.. problem is if you do that, it'll take forever to get anywhere lol, finding a Christian who's fun to debate, someone whos very strongly knowledgeable in the all the scriptures, it ain't easy to find someone like that...
were do you want to go
all holy books are evil. Find one that isn't evil. Remember when I use the word evil I mean my view point to something or someone that violates my world view. That is the definition of evil people use. Because evil does not exist in reality only in view points.
How can a book be evil? Is a gun evil? The devil quotes the bible to jesus in his temptation in the desert, he twists it, he misquotes it, Satan knows the bible better than me. The bible is a sword, it divides bone and marrow. The bible is a hammer. This says to me its a tool which can be used for either purpose. kkk Waco LDS ete ete.
I guess Matt doesn't watch movies because he cares only about what is true.
Way to straw man what he was saying. He only cares about what's true in regards to beliefs about reality. No one is claiming fictional movies are actually happening.
+MorphyVSFischer Movie requires you to believe his story and characters are real(temporarily). Why would you feel anger, sadness or any other emotion if it's just a play?
Jonathan is describing the similar situation by saying that regardless of (non)existence of God his belief is real and it gives him pleasure.
ImplosiveCat Because it's not the same at all and not what this caller is doing? People who suspend there disbelief still recognize tat it's fiction when there watching it, unlike the caller saying he believes God is real, he just can't prove it and only does it because it makes him happy. People acknowledge movies are works of fiction which they can derive pleasure from. If God is just a story he tells himself that might be comparable, but he's saying God is a real, existing thing that influences his beliefs. If he cared about the truth more then what made him happy he would acknowledge God is a story he tells himself, but recognize that it's not real instead of hiding behind ''you can't prove it didn't happen."
Well ImplosiveCat that's rather silly.....I enjoy SciFi movies quite a bit, but I don't actually believe Star Wars is actually true, unlike Christians and other religious people who actually believe some ancient old book of fables are actually true stories.....they're not.
You don't understand what I'm saying. The movie (good one) has it's own reality. That's why you're emotionally engaged while watching. Knowing that it's just a movie doesn't affect the experience and that's what Jonathan eventually says 11:22. He may be aware that it's not necessary true but what matters is how does his belief affect his experience. Keep in mind that he didn't say much about what he believes yet Matt keeps up with witch hunt wild guessing the harmful impact of "out of tune reality" and I can guarantee you that he has little to no idea of psychological mechanisms and their impact on our lives. Ignorant speculative generalization without any in-depth argumentation.
What the hell was that noise at 3:31?
Jen, flew, to the Bidet and on Her way, back, She remembered She could not fly. She is OK
That was me unzipping my pants.
Love the ending, im pretty sure he hung up. I hope he used that statement from the lady and thought about it. How can believing in something that he cant prove right give him hope?
I didn't realize that something can only be true if it makes me happier or more successful in life.
This guy discovered the word "unfalsifiable" and is now using it to parade around like he found some justification for believing in bullshit. This call should have not gone on this long with this circular nonsense.
The caller didn't show that he even knew what the hosts' major points were.
By the end of the call my personal preference led me to believe that a Stormtrooper was calling into the show.
Matt always estimates the time being longer when he gets frustrated he will say we've been going on for an hour when it's only been 15 minutes
Relativity
I may have missed it, but Matt missed another fallacy: preference in liking oranges is a truth claim, as you can repeat the test
This is a great show! These individuals are very sharp.
I choose to be convinced that hobgoblins exist, therefore they do.
I love how there's 30 videos in the section called Crazy Calls! Says it all.
"A person could either live with Facts and Reality, which promote stabillity, at the helm of their life or live with Faith and Fantasy, which promote instability, at the helm."
Whenever I get down I remember this quote: "Time heals all wounds". So I just stick it out and it's worked every time. :)
Arguing with some people is like wrestling a pig in the mud. Sooner or later you realize the pig enjoys it.
I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky.
Jen cracked me up! "Based on what?"..."His opinion..." says Matt. Jen then states, "Oh, because he ate an orange."
"Be sure to eat your mangoes. They prevent scurvy."
"I think the truth gives you pleasure."
"But I don't do that because it gives me pleasure."
Yes you do. There is no other reason anyone does anything at all.
Choosing a "strong belief" in the absence of evidence for it is an absolute example of giving truth a lesser priority in one's life. Now that's fine, but it would be nice that people realise that's what they are doing.
Matt has the patience of a saint

It's my opinion that many theist are theist simply to have social supports and to "feel good." And they just want to believe that their God is unfalseifiable. The question at the end is something I think can lead theist to become atheist. "How is believing in something you can't demonstrate to be true give you hope and happiness?"
Theres a theistic ad (5 mins long) playing before this Atheist Experience episode & it's too funny. "tomorrow's world"
all my happiness is derived from the truth.
Finally the neurological connection has been brought up.At least this is the first time i've heard any reference to the brain in these discussions.
Jonathan believes because it feels good may be saying a lot more about belief systems than is immediately apparent.
well I say I will lose something my time and it's valuable to me, so wasting it on praying seems kind of counter productive to me.
"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." (2 Corinthians 4:18) One of the most difficult handicaps for a Christian to overcome is spiritual nearsightedness. It is easy to see temporal things, but hard to think on eternal things. We see unseen and know about it as we see things of the world. It's NOT delusion but Reality of coming days.
When I was losing faith, and that happened over a span of either a couple of months to a year maybe, I was more afraid of having to face some god in the afterlife rather than fearing death itself. When I effectively began calling myself an atheist, I remember for a little while the world felt a little bit empty. I suppose when a big chunk of life gets taken out of your life, something like that is just to be expected. I actually share much more understanding now for people like him.
I want a here after, so there is a here after..
Wow...
Rather than needing an intermediate action taking place, I think he's arguing just because you choose to believe something, doesn't mean the truth has changed. Such as believing you can fly, doesn't mean you wont splat on the ground if you jumped off a building.
He's afraid of dying and so believes in a lie to comfort him. That's not ridiculous, that's instinctive. Go through the five stages of depression. Denial, Anger, Hope, Depression, Acceptance. You can take either #1 or #3 as the stage.
This actually was one of the better Big Matt shows. He doesn't start raising his voice until at least the 6 minute mark. How many weeks, months or years will Big Matt do the exact same thing and get the exact same undesired results? He seems to have more than just a passing interest in science. Perhaps if he read a little about Einstein he will discover what Einstein has to say about repeating the same actions over and over again all the while expecting a different result.
When you have written the phrase "don't respond, you've been pwned," especially after three such vacuous statements, you lose the right to say anything along the lines of "at least I can make arguments, you only make jokes."
A monument to wishful thinking.
I"m a staunch atheist and I think the caller has some points that are correct. The reality is that humanity does work that way, and people will look for what makes them happy even if they aren't truly convinced. Life doesn't work on logic and syllogisms; the brain is a funny thing, and sometimes it reaches a better place by taking the seemingly "wrong steps".
It was explained in the video:
Religion: Assume the answer, try and force the evidence to fit your assumption and reject anything that doesn't follow. Aka "An organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to the supernatural, and to spirituality."
Science: Find all facts, THEN make the answer.
Science isn't religion, because it doesn't try to link facts to a premade answer such as "supernaturality". If anything, the facts lead to natural answers only.
what if way back in time where communication was mouth to mouth only, the truth was that the problem was that mostly ppl believed but could not be made to believe and the most occurring problem was "what "ppl"" believed .
then i might aswell be threatening ppl to believe and be yet another angry dumbass
Here we go again, this man believes because he believes because he believes. Not interested in what might be true or not, he simply believes because he likes to believe.
