Kevin Schwantz and Ron Haslam collided early on in the race with Schwantz out, breaking his knee cap. Amidst all the chaos, Randy Mamola, who managed to stay up after colliding with Norihiko Fujiwara at the hairpin, put on a great show with multiple power slides on his Cagiva as he waved to the capacity crowd. And then, on the final lap, Rob McElnea had a dramatic high-side coming out of the chicane, marking a dismal day for the Pepsi Suzuki team.
