    Hey Brad. As a Whole Food Plant Based vegan I do need a zinc supplement to sustain my levels since I just don't like chickpea's and one can only eat so many Cashews. Frankly I have allergies preventing me from eating some of the Zinc right foods (mainly in the seed/nuts department) thus I need to supplement.
    Though I do feel your list of plant based zinc sources was a bit lacking. So for the people who are interested: Beans, chickpea's, lentils, tofu, walnuts, cashews, chia seed, flax seed, hemp seeds, pumkin seeds, wholemeal bread, quinoa. This provides alot of options to get zinc into the system.
    For the "phytates" part. Beans and legumes need to be cooked or else they are nothing more than rocks and you cannot eat them. Cooking them so they are soft removes about 90% of the phytates from them. So yes a plant based person needs a bit higher zinc intake from food sources. But not to a level where you are deficiënt because the phytates took them all. It is just not as a big deal as people make it out to be.
    To be more specific even Dr. Steven R. Gundry, author of the "plant paradox" making peoples fear of Phytates rise to a new levels, even recanted his old believes and now advices people to eat legumes and lentils if they are properly cooked. So lets not make the "phytate" non-issues a big deal. Yes it has interaction with eachother, but on a sufficiënt diet of plants there is no problem.

    • @murphsviews
      @murphsviews Рік тому +1

      Apparently zinc l-methionine allows zinc absorption with phytates and fibre in vegetables.

So if you take a Zinc supplement and you add a product for your prostate or for eye health, make sure your not getting too much zinc. I do approximately the same. Also, at first cold symptoms, I slowly dissolve (sugar-free) zinc acetate lozenges on the back of my tongue. It takes an hour or two per lozenge, which I repeat every 2-3 hours. I've seen suggestions that it is OK to take up to 70mg/day that way for 2-3 days, although my symptoms have always vanished after a day and a half or so, at which time I stop. Also take quercetin and NAC for 3 days when feeling symptoms.
    I've been doing this for a couple of years. So far, I haven't had a cold last longer than a couple of days, and then only with the most minor symptoms.

      The lozenges are not fun; they are irritating in their own way. So I only take them until symptoms disappear. However, the lozenges are _important_ because they get the zinc into the nasal passages where upper respiratory viruses incubate. The goal is to inhibit incubation of the virus long enough for your mucosal immune system to kill it.
      So eating zinc is good daily, sucking on zinc is for colds/flu/Covid, and boosting both with quercetin or similar boosts the effect.

      @@stanislavsousek6375 Yes about sprays. That's why lozenges are superior to (zinc) nasal sprays. The dose to your nasal mucosa is much lower.
      Also lozenges seem to be more effective than sprays (anecdotally). Perhaps because it takes an hour or two to dissolve the lozenge, so prolonged effect at lower dosage than sprays.
      FWIW, The sprays worked fine for most people for many years. But a few people did have trouble. Perhaps they were overdosing?
      Other nasal sprays, inhalers, and lavage may also be good, although more cumbersome. The easiest/safest is saline, but 0.5% povidone iodine might be stronger. That's 10% iodine mixed 1 part iodine to 19 parts distilled water.

      That's odd - I've not seen zinc listed on any nutritional yeast package - fortified or unfortified. If it's on the fortified version you buy, it's no doubt part of the fortification and therefore, not actually from the yeast itself, and basically akin to taking a supplement.

    I was doing zinc picolinate for a while last year and didnt feel much effect. I quit because research also shows absorption depends on the intake; body will absorb more if it needs more. Also, I would be interested in better understands the biochemistry of why zinc is so important. I have a feeling its' one of those things where the real culprit is glutathione/exercise/mitochondrial function etc so I just make sure my diet has enough zinc in it... Although i suspect meat is a better source based on improved GI function when I get at least a little meat

    Here is one issue: testing zinc levels. In class I was taught that there's no "widely accepted" test for zinc. If you search for "serum zinc", you'll see there is disagreement as to the utility. In my nutrient tests (Nutreval), they use serum zinc. After supplementing with zinc bisglycinate for about 4 years (not a very high dose), my zinc levels were on the higher end of the normal range. Copper (plasma) was normal. So, if were talking zinc supplementation, but there's no reliable way to test it, then..?

    I take one Thorne Pic-Mins per day (picolineate based minerals). It says "Zinc, as zinc picolineate, 15mg, 136% DV". No mention of elemental. But a google search says zinc picolineate is only 20% elemental zinc. So am I getting 15mg, or just 3mg? If its 3mg, the thorne label of 136% is wrong!

    • @davidjordan2011
      @davidjordan2011 2 роки тому

      The Thorne label is certainly reporting the amount of elemental zinc, i.e., 15 mg, not the total weight of zinc picolinate per cap or tab. The label explicitly states "136 percent DV." The relevant math, therefore, is "15 mg/1.36 = 11 mg," and 11 mg is the DV or RDA in the USA. You don't say where you live, but I'm guessing the USA, and there are certainly federal laws relating to labelling which prohibit the possible deceptive labelling you are uncertain about.
      TLDR: You're getting 15 mg Zn per dose.

    I'm taking 25 mg Zn daily as picolinate. Scientific sources of info on health maintenance and improvement I use recommend taking Zn:Cu in roughly 10:1 to 15:1 ratio, not to deplete Cu, so I'm also taking 2.5 mg Cu daily as glycinate. I'm an omnivore and eat some flesh, however, my total Zn is likely in the safe range per those health info sources.
    BTW, how much do consumption of coffee (which I may be giving up soon), beer (which I have given up recently, to be healthier, but am wondering about its lingering effect), healthfully large amounts of filtered water, and sweating from working a strenuous job affect flushing Zn out of the body?

    Funny you seem to have low zinc from your mostly vegetarian diet, I eat a whole food plant based diet and get 20-23mg of zinc per day without supplements. Oats and nutritional yeast seem to be two big sources but beans and Lentils are pretty high too. Oddly I eat about 60g of nuts and seeds per day (including cashews and almonds) but they don't even show up in my top 10 zinc sources on cronometer!

    Just saying this in case some vegetarians / vegans would consider it:
    This might relate to a certain perception of ethics, but I personally choose to be a vegetarian except I also eat the shellfish that don't have brains (hence no thought, emotion, or consciousness) (mussels, scallops, clams, oysters, starfish...) and they're filled with zinc, copper, choline and DHA/EPA omega 3s which are what vegetarians typically struggle to find in their diet.
    Also mussels help filter pollution from water so their production is helping the environment.

    As a longterm vegan 20 yrs+ my zinc are better than average without supplementation. It's simply a matter of what you eat. Cooked oats, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, boiled chickpeas, tofu (protein, zinc, calcium), tempeh, are stables for me. Even with lower absorption (phytates can be removed) its enough and then you get all the benefits associated with these foods as well. Please make the distinction between a poor veg/vegan diet and a good/balanced one. Just like there are good and bad omnivore diets.
    From the Medical Journal of Australia:
    "Summary
    - Well planned vegetarian diets can provide adequate amounts of zinc from plant sources.
    - Vegetarians appear to adapt to lower zinc intakes by increased absorption and retention of zinc.
    - Good sources of zinc for vegetarians include whole grains, tofu, tempeh, legumes, nuts and seeds, fortified breakfast cereals and dairy products.
    - The inhibitory effects of phytate on absorption of zinc can be minimised by modern food-processing methods such as soaking, heating, sprouting, fermenting and leavening.
    - Absorption of zinc can be improved by using yeast-based breads and sourdough breads, sprouts, and presoaked legumes.
    - Studies show vegetarians have similar serum zinc concentrations to, and no greater risk of zinc deficiency than, non-vegetarians (despite differences in zinc intake)."
