- During a recent track day at Silverstone our 330D ran away on its own oil, resulting in an ear bleeding 10,000RPM engine failure.
If you ever wondered what v-tec would sound like on a straight 6 diesel, this is probably the closest you will get!

Sadly it woulndt make more than at redline, as the valve lifters arent stiff enough at such high revs. The valves would float, and that, along with the over revs, would grenade the engine.
Why is everyone saying money shift? You can literally see it runaway and then he clearly stalls it (in bloody quick time too). Or am I the thick one?

This was a Runaway condition caused by overheating of the back 2 cylinders due to an M57 cooling system design issue which resulted in melted pistons and the engine running on its own oil.
Yes, but no. The pistons melting are a consequence of running away. Where did it get the oil from? What else failed?
Melting 5 and 6 isn’t going to feed oil into 1,2,3 and 4.

It sounds like oil got into the combustion chamber. Once that happens the engine will just rev its tits off and no way to control it

Shifting from 3 to 2 instead of 3 to 4. Thats why you shoudnt extend your gear stick.

Very badly? He let it ran at 10k for ages, how the hell didn't he realise? I've moneyshifted (Just too early, not wrong gear), it got to about 7.5k (Petrol, and was going to rev to 9k or so, redline 7k) before I realised and put the clutch straight back in. Hence no damage. He dumped the clutch and took seconds to realise the mistake, I'd have thought you'd recognise a 6cyl diesel making a noise like a Honda quite quickly...

Had this happen on my 330d but only hit about 7k.. No engine damage. turbo oil seals let go in a bad way. Time for a B.W s360 XD
I would just connect an almost dying diesel car/truck to a obd2 port,connecc(typo on purpose) the obd2 with a phone app that reads rpm,yeet some engine oil into the intake and let her rip,see what rpm can the engine do

I was just about the write how slow he was to bang it in to gear and stall it but then I read loads of people saying quick reaction well done, so I don't think I will write that now
It wouldn't go in. I wonder how quick you could realise what was going on, check your mirrors, pull off the racing line, get it into gear and try stall it without being in the middle of the track.

Well at least I know where the limits are for the motors ability to rev safety even though it wasn’t safe at all it literally shredded everything with that motor😂

Well here we put 330D gearboxs in the OM606 swaps, so there might be room there for one?

I did that with my vw TDI. Went past redline and broke a rod and bent all the others
I did this on my N47 Mini Cooper on the nurburgring. Even a remaped ECU managed this well. Did give me a scare though.

No the engine let some oil in and ran away. It would take a lot to make the revs hang like that otherwise. It wouldn't go into 4th as the revs increased quickly rather than dropping

Thought the engine has a flap in the induction to prevent this from happening. I know the n47 engine has the feature.
He couldn't reach the key to turn it off properly so would need to be stopped not do it. Killing the power would not close the valve
The engine ran away. Oil got into the combustion chamber, and since it's a diesel, it does not need a spark to ignite. So the engine will eat itself. Probably piston ring failure or a hole in the piston itself. He stalled it by releasing the clutch on highest gear. It's the only way to stop a runaway engine without putting yourself at risk.
@@D3humaniz3d Oh god, stop explaining how a runaway happens. The op said about using the flap valve as a means of closing the airflow. Anyway i think it won't close unless at idle. It is there to prevent stutter on shut off.

And to answer OP' question, yes the M57 family has flaps to close off intake air. He must have either got rid of them (some people apparently do that) or the hinges on those flaps were caked in carbon and were permanently open due to the EGR.
D3 humaniz3d i don’t think that’s the case, in order for that flap to close it would require for the car to be stopped but he was on the move and instead chose to stall out the car on purpose which was the right move; waiting for the car to come to a full stop and turn the car off would’ve taken much longer.
0:30 rev counter on the clocks (not on the screen) confused jumping around.

blyahhh diesel is working with compression and like it or not it doesnt go further thab maximum 5.5 6k rpm and second wtf you need tractor for to collect corn in the field lol

""Engine" does not "see" the compression, but only the pressure.
High boosted gas engine on ethanol have same or higher pressure in cylinder as TD, but still can rev to 8k rpm or much more...

@@DD-ow4or there are scale models rc engines (like 2.5 ccm or 5 ccm displacement), running on rc fuel, not diesel, but with compression ignition. They often have max power at 25k rpm or more...

when the engine is running on oil there is nothing you can do electronically to prevent it.

I don’t suppose you could give me some advice on tuning a pre LCI M57 325d manual. Torque limits for gearbox/clutch, and max power before needing too uprate to 330d injectors???

Its all cool but what about making it actually drivable above 6k? Om606 can rev freely to 7k, mybe with better springs 8?
Direct injection won't really do anything above 5500rpm in normal operation.
@@DarksideDevelopments great to know about it, but om 606 uses a forchamber injection, some old bmw engines also have it, shouldnt be a big problem to insert it into a newer engine, actually would be a cool video to see, high reving diesel project, and what about converting a petrol engine into diesel(1jz or rb 20 as bases)?
We had a diesel run away today but we drowned the car in fuel so it turned off så no explotin the enigen is broken tho

I think it was something about 7500 rpm or less than 7500rpm. I heared a bmw m3 with gasoline engine on 7500 rpm. These 2 sounds are pretty similar.
