  • Keir Starmer is the current Leader of the Labour Party, previously working as a barrister until he became an MP in 2015.
A self-described “undersharer”, Keir takes this opportunity with Jake and Damian to open up about his childhood, his leadership style and what it’s really like to be the Leader of the Opposition. As a big football fan, Keir shares what he has learnt from watching Arsenal play and why he has developed such a love for the game.
Discussing his career as a barrister, Keir shares his difficult experiences representing people on death row. He explores the current adversarial system in politics, how it really feels to speak in parliament and how Keir would change the system.
On a more personal note, they delve deep into Keir’s childhood. He shares how although his mum struggled with Still’s disease she was continually determined and courageous. He reminds himself, “if mum can get up, I can get up”. He shares with Jake and Damian what he would do differently when facing the death of his father and what he would tell his parents if they were alive today.
In this episode they discuss decision making in leadership, when to trust others' judgement and how to shut out the noise.

He's genuinely Conservative with a small c. Almost Blair like in his views, which is why he is supported by Murdochs right wing press. Regardless he will more than likely be our next PM. Will he fix the system though?. If the government don't reduce deficit spending and have to support the poorer end of society, inflation goes up, then interest rates go up, which affects those with mortages or loans. Those interest payments go back to the super wealthy who own the mortgages and then loops again. The super wealthy have to pay the biggest amount of tax or they are almost removed from the problem, only ever gaining and never losing out, while the rest of the population become generationally poorer.

I couldn't bear to watch it after Keir talked about leaving the room when his father died. It was too emotionally difficult. Me and my sister were in that position with our grandfather last year. I couldn't bear being in the room whilst his heartbeat continually slowed down, it was too much. So I left the room whilst my sister remained at his side. A nurse came back to tell me he passed and my heart just dropped. I couldn't return to that room, I just felt so guilty. Guilty that I wasn't strong enough to stay in the room, guilty that I couldn't to tell my grandfather I loved him one last time, and guilty I left my sister alone to watch our grandfather pass away before her eyes. I ran away, it's my worst regret. Me and my sister never talk about that, we avoid the subject like the plague. We don't talk much anymore either, and I know it's because I left her alone that time. I regret it and I've wished this entire year that I could change the past. I wish I told my grandfather I loved him everyday he was alive. I wish I was strong enough to not leave that room when he passed. I wish I was there with my sister to share her grief and shoulder the pain together. Unfortunately, I cannot bring my grandfather back to life. But my sister is still here, and this interview has given me the strength to talk to my sister once more. To apologize to her for leaving her alone in that room. To tell her every day that I love her like what I wished I could do to my grandfather if he was still alive. We only have a limited time in this world, and I want to spend as much of it as I can with my family. I don't want to have any more regrets for not telling a dying family member that I loved them more when they were still alive and conscious. Thank you for this interview, truly from the bottom of my heart, for reminding me of what's important and to give me the strength to confront my mistakes and make amends
