- Today we're checking out the Sony A7II, a 5 year old camera that at the time of release absolutely had some cutting edge tech hiding inside of it.
This was the first full frame camera to have built in in body image stabilization which frankly is insane to think of for 2014.
But something we're going to need to tackle today.
Is it still any good?
Lets find out!

I feel like you should cover the fact that it takes pictures too. LOL
Ugh, no one on YT even mentions the photo side of things. Is everyone only blogging now?
Glad I'm not the only one who felt this way!
I agree with you. I thought I heard from somewhere that this camera is more for photos then video, but you didn't talk much about it.
is it a good photo camera?
You know whats funny even R series cameras that are meant to be for photography are told here as video cameras,l
Who here already has an a7ii but is still watching?😂
Well I don't really care for video recording so yeah I bought mine exclusively for photography. still love this vid though haha
me😂
My name is NotCalin me 😂😂
Me 😂
Silly me 😂
As soon as you switched I was like damn that blur.
A7ii is a great camera for entering the full frame world. It basically opens a world to the sony/3rd party lens collection. Get a used one or a new one on sale and save up the money for good lenses. It's a beast of camera for stills if you shoot raw. It's also a very decent 1080p camera in every aspect except for the short battery life and not so perfect autofocus. But the autofocus is definitely usable. The in-body image stabilization is huge for those who like to shoot hand held videos and have non is lenses. I'm currently owning the camera with FE85 f1.8, FE 50 f1.8. They make a great kit for portrait. Just got a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 with the latest firmware. The combo is great for shooting videos and the autofocus works very well on the lens. I also got a powerextra battery grip and 2x 1500mha batteries which basically solved the battery life issue and doesn't add too much weight. Even though I can afford to upgrade to A7iii, I dont see a necessity for me at least, who takes photography/video as a serious hobby. I might, eventually, but not at this price point.
How much would you expect to pay for a used a7ii?
@@justhannat15 Somewhere between 650 to 750 depending on the condition and the accessories it comes with
Currently I'm using an A7ii, but a lot of my lenses are vintage lenses using a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and 70-210mm f/4 , 58mm M42 f/2 and the 28-70 f/3.5-5.6 But I definitely use this for photography and it does really well. It functions well. I find it funny though cause I bought this camera just recently this past 6 months in May or June of 2019, and the A7iii was just put on sale which I find very unflattering that theyd do that. But in all honesty I'm using it for video as well and it's still decent. I just need to save more for lenses with AF.
I'm thinking about switching from a 5 year old Nikon to a 5 year old Somy.
Did you switch?!
I've been waiting for a video like this for forever! I've been looking into getting this camera because it was on sale and the a7iii is out of my price range w/ a lens. Thank you so much! I'm a photographer first and I'm starting to expand to video now.
Thanks so much this review I've been on the edge for this camera for a while, really helpful!
Awesome glad it was able to help!
Still waiting for him to talk about photography and show sample images... Got mine 2017 and can’t afford to upgrade to any of the new ones either 😂
Ha ha! Love this. I still use this camera as my primary photo camera. Not so much for video unless I'm shooting low res. But I love it. Still holds up with my G Master lenses.
May I ask about your experience with low light situations? What's the highest ISO you use for good results and what's the highest for at least acceptable photos?
Thank you for the reviews
It's a 24MP full frame sensor w/ IBIS for 998 (plus a half decent 28-70). I think it's a great deal for stills
Amazing like always man
Thanks so much!
I have 2 A7ii, With Sigma Art lenses.. 35mm 50mm 85mm. And it works great! I shoot weddings.
Where ur work at
This is the information I’d like to receive
Meanwhile I'm using A7 first gen, with a lens from 1958...
Aye im using a a7ii with Canon FD and Minolta lenses from 1970s lol.
@@imanixk9224 those lenses are awesome tho
@@imanixk9224 Me too...
haha that's why I wanted to upgrade. I hate bringing my gimbal and tripod everywhere it makes it heavy for no reason!
Fascinating
Just did a similar video for end of 2019. After about 600 photoshoots with models. This camera has great image quality but damn the battery limitations really really hamper this cam for future creators
I'm watching this vid the whole time just waiting for that moment.... 4:54 you aren't fooling me! Lol hope your elbow is feeling better man!
Ha! Definitely was a painful experience!
Hello!!, although i can't afford new cameras, (or used) I still love your videos man!! Keep it up also I'm 4th!!
Well thanks so much!
11 minutes of how good the camera is to use for video, why no stills photography review?
Kram Sniggah because we need MORE Videography reviews! There are way too many photography reviewss
Nice video, but which you cover the photo sign of this camera as well.
As of today, 11/24/2019, the camera is now $898 body only and $989 with the 24-70 lens. Is this worth of buying still?
I owned the a7ii and loved it for photos during 2017. I purchased the a7iii in 2018 and that is amazing for photos and video. I have since sold my a7ii. Great video!
Oh yeah I definitely think the A7iii is way better but if you can get the a7ii for half the cost I think its a good deal.
You can get a used one with kit lens for well under a grand these days! If only it had a flippy screen though...
I need the flip screen 😅
@@TheEverydayDad - Me too! That's why I'm saving up for the G85 :D
@@TopblokeGolf - I've seen them on Amazon used for that much. You could also try ebay too.
I'd wager it's a great full frame entry point for stills. Shooting a little video could be a bonus. The first full frame thousandish dollar camera that popped into my mind was the RP.....
Yeah if I were to look for a full frame camera for $1000 It would be a tough call between this and the RP. Its really more about what lens selection you prefer to invest it.
Cool thing about sony emount is there are alot of adapters for other mounts. So far the rf line is super expensive aside from the 35 1.8 mac for 450.
I'm going to get it next week. Coming from an ancient Canon 500D with it's kit lens, I hope to finally get usable shots - not to mention me being used to the insanely bad video quality of the 500D.
I just bought the A7 today.. was a steal at £500! With the 20-70mm lens too, brand new !
My first full frame camera. Can't wait to try it. Wasn't prepared to pay the extra £400-500 for the A7ii just for IBIS
Just got the a7ii and also thought about getting the m1.
After all I decided to get the m2 because of a longer shutterlife, ibis, better handling, less problems with the mount and a less reflecting sensor.
But with no doubt the m1 is an awesome camera and a real bargain in 2019, have fun and get out shooting!
Just bought this 2 week ago best bang for buck camera 2019 for stills.
I bet, it looks like it would be good for that.
Bought it. Love it.
I upgraded today to an A7 II.
My upgrade path is kinda messy though:
Nikon D3000 - Nikon D5200 - Nikon D7100 - Sony A7 (mark 1) - Sony A7 ii (for the IBIS, i use a lot of vintage lenses)
I picked it up for 722 USD (Body) and I'm pretty happy with that price! I kept my normal A7 as a second camera tripod camera
even i use vintage lenses lol ...today only i bought a helios 44-2 lens 😍
Shanaya Chaudhary great pick! Instagram?
I just bought one of these puppies yesterday. My upgrade path is Nikon D40 to Fuji X100s and a bunch of film cameras to Ricoh GRii to a7ii. Currently waiting patiently for the Sony to arrive, I'm so excited to use it with all my manual focus Nikkors and Leica glass
1080p relevant? Hellz yeah. Aren't there millions of 1080p and 720p tv's? 2. I have no interest in 4K.
MrDark21knight Yup, still rocking my 40in 1080p, Bravia from 2008. It still looks fantastic.
Pauper, you.
I just bought one with 963 actuations and a 28-70 Zeiss like brand new $850.00 in the box...... and it's amazing.....
Hey, what about now when both the A7 II and Canon RP are around $1000? Which one would you recommend?
I have it, got it last November and it was a Great upgrade from m4/3 with beautiful full frame. The auto focus is the only thing pushing me to upgrade soon to a a7III. Have taken really great photographs and once I added the grip could do a photoshot with a couple of batteries. 300-600 photos with ease. Video is not as sharp a 4K capable camera has BUT has the full frame look and is good for low light. It paid itself already 4 times!
The new autofocus on the A7iii is amazing!
@@TheEverydayDad 😊
I too look at the a7ii as an upgrade from my olympus for stills but the a7iii looks tempting lol. Decisions 🤠
elaventurerosabe since I wrote this I got the a7III and kept The a7II as backup. Some of my best pictures of the year still came from the a7II and the a7M3 is praised for a very good reason, is amazing. The a7RII is a good option too and have better auto focus :)
@@pty_foto im actually debating between a new a7ii $900 or a used a 7rii $1200... would be nice to have more megapixels for my landscapes lol
Just I purchase my Sony camera 3 months ego , just I like so much , To much fun!!
overall performance and quality wise, would it be better to get the sony a7ii or the sony a6400? Im stuck choosing between these 2 cameras
EndlessVenom I have the 6400, autofocus and battery great. At Under 1k for full frame, ibis, strong lowlight capability, and awesome lens quality looks like a great buy. Might pick one up too ..
Hey dad! I got a question, what would you pick, this A7II or the a6400? I do more pictures than video, but I am looking at another camera / system (from a D5600 nikon, and a nikon person for ever 20 years) since I want something much better for video and need the same level of performance for pictures... a flip up monitor is almost a must have... thanks!
A7ii better for stills i just got one is a beasty
I've been using an 8 years old camera the canon 600d and I must say that anything that are 5 years to 3 years old cameras is still worth buying in 2019 or to 2020 when you're in a budget, these cameras still holds up.
DigzBie yeah I’m currently using a canon rebel t2i with the kit lenses
If i'm interesting in just photopgraphy. What do you recomend... Body of a7ii or full Cameraa6400?
Would this be good for photographing kids that don’t sit still? Or can you recommend one that would be good for that under $1500? Thanks!
Im using Sony a7ii body with this 3 lens, the sony 20mm f2.8 A mount, Minolta 50mm f2.8 macro a mount and Samyang 85mm t1.5 E mount ✌️
I just bought yesterday !
Sony a7ii vs sony a6400 which is the best for photography??
So I just bought this camera (
Sony a7 II 24.3MP Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera + SEL2870 Lens) and paid $800.00 out the door. Black Friday Deal and just decided to give it a shot. Good review and I feel like I'll be happy with this lighter weight compared to my old trusty Canon 7D. I travel around Europe a lot and needed to really get a lighter and easier traveled camera. Now to buy some batteries.
Wow! Where did you get it from?
the a7ii is the camera I still use for my videos on my channel, and it DOES shoot 4K, but you need to have the right type of SD cards for it to be possible
and it shoots 24fps as well as 60fps...have you explored the settings at all?? You're missing out on so many things in this video!!
It doesn’t shoot 4K, does it?
@@creativework2506 yes it does
Which as cards do I need? I never read anything about this🤷♂️
@@creativework2506 at least a 128GB U3 SD card
The camera spent most of May and June at $999 with the kit lens. If anyone wants to buy new, don’t buy at more than that price. It seems silly that they increased the price back to $1500. Either wait for it to go back down or get used.
Dude ik right I feel so bad for not buying it
It’s 999 currently
I own it. Love it. I'm thinking about getting the BMPCC4K but I won't be selling this one.
Have you done city photography? Low light pics of buildings? I’m interested in this.
@@Applefanboy2012 I did and I wass surprised how well it performed... Maybe because I switched from apsc but its great with low noise
Now this comes with a very affordable price by $898!
REALLY good info thanks
Thanks so much!
It's back does below a thou. Do you still think that’s a buy signal?
The A7 II with 28-70 is $999! I'm returning my Canon RP....
Does the a7ii and the a6400 have weather sealing?
I got mine for less than 1000.00 a couple weeks ago. Now the A7 is the same price I got my A7II for at best buy.
is there a way to make the camera always running for streaming
Yep you can
It's 999.99 now!
I got the camera 2 days ago for a 1000 love it so far
Should I buy this one or the Canon M50?? I’ve just found out that the cannon doesn’t have weather sealing, and I travel too much so I ended up finding this one.
All about the video but is it any good for still photos????
In the UK you can buy 2nd hand body only for £650, a good deal?
I'm getting ready to make my first camera purchase and this one has been on my eye for a while. I don't know anything about cameras, but I know I don't like the screen setup. Do you have any recommendations for a first time buyer?
BoogieMane you might get lost in the depths on the sony camera settings, especially if you’re a beginner
IProDerp any recommendations?
BoogieMane do you have a price certain price range?
IProDerp I don't want to go over $1000. I want something decent so I won't have to worry about upgrading the body anytime soon. I don't know anything about photography, but I know it can get expensive. From everything I've been reading I may as well go mirrorless. That Nikon Z6 seems nice but that price is out of my league.
I was thinking about getting a canon M camera (there is a rumors of a new one releasing on August) and get the 22mmf2 with 2 EF glasses 50mm f1.8 and 135mm f2 and adapt with both the focal reducer and the normal adapter and essentially get 5 focal length out of 3 lenses prime. But with the same money I could get a a7RII with 28mm f2 and 85mm f1.8. I only shoot photo so which one you think is better?
I personally think focal reducers are OK when you want to upgrade an old APSC camera like the XT10, but if you plan to get the newest EOS M model I think you don't get the benefits of it with adapting lenses over third party adapters. To be honest I would go for an A7III with the 28mm, 85mm and maybe the 45mm samyang. You're getting awesome lenses (the 85mm is one of the best 85s around) and incredible autofocus performance
Sony 28mm f2 is an awesome lens! I highly recommend it
Sony a7ii or lumix g85 ?? Which one suitable for both traveling videography and photography ??
G85
Ι am coming from a Nikon d3200 so I will definitely see a difference but do you think is worth it to save 1000 euros (in my country) from A7 iii ?
I prefer to spend more money on lens.
I would say if your main ficus is stills and is just a hobby. Get this camera used and buy some great lenses. The 85 1.8 and the 28 2.0 all you need
This channel is sooo underrated, love the content
This camera is on sale right now for $1000 with the 28-70mm lens. Should I pick one up or pick up the Sony rx100 vii instead?
Chris Fu depends what your doing with it. Vlogging I say rx100 vii. Sit down videos 7ii
Natasha Nicole wanted to vlog. Along with cinematic shots and use it for perhaps a podcast too... I think I’m convinced to go with the a7ii since I’ll have more options with lenses and such.
got this camera for around $600 second hand. Such a great camera for its price!
I bought it for $1000 first mirrorless my upgrade from canon t3
This is so weird cause im about to buy this camera for 1000 from a canon t3 too
I've just bought it, so let's hope You say the right thing.
Are you satisfied so far? What lens do you use?
@@sniperalex117 got the cheapest 50mm f1.8. I'm satisfied, it's a good camera.
damn.. i bought it in 2021.. still awesome to work with..
Awesome vid , does it have a compatible AC power supply for 24/7 operation? And an option to remain on (no 30 minute shutdown)
It does have a recording limit and it does have an ac supply to keep it running forever.
That color "science" of mk2 is just terrible... Everything is so yellow.
Please specify video review, I'm a photographer
hey does this thing only take video? seems like you are only reviewing the video sides of things. Hope you do more to cover those that only take still photography. just my 1c
he has said before he doesn't really take photos.
This isn’t really a video camera but it takes video. Something he picked out was the blur on the autofocus which is really constant and annoying. The A6000 series is more specialized for video. But the photos are incredible. But like he said, buy it on sale I would not spend $1,500 on this camera now.
what should i buy if i’m using a 5d classic with 50mm canon lens 1.4f. Should i buy used 6d body or sell everything and buy used a7ii body and used sony 50mm 1.4 ? ASAP
Ahahhah same here
xdd
Hey? does it take pictures?
What's yall opinion switch from canon 80d to the Sony a7??
I switched from canon m50 to a7ii. Really happy with my decision
I am deciding if I'll onder now or tomorrow. lol!
Tempting in 2019: plenty of them with lens available on eBay for $900. Not sure how much worse the focus really is from a7iii considering price. Anyone else comment on stabilisation and focus?
today's 999$ black friday special deal , should i buy this camera? LOL i soot punk shows in dark rooms
Massimo Mirilli I just bought mine for Black Friday.
@Martin Biafora same!
Me too! The price is definitely right.

I was waiting for an A7II in 2019. For someone coming from (newer) canon cropped cameras, Is this a good upgrade? For casual, travel, and non-professional shooting (98% photography), this or the Canon RP? I will probably invest in lenses whichever I go for so my current gear doesn't matter. Both don't have the best image quality but I think the newer canon RP is better. For the price though, I can get the RP body for almost as much as the A7II kit lens. Maybe you could compare this with the RP? Great video, by the way. Much appreciated. Cheers!
despite some of its wonky limitations with framerates and video cropping and stuff, the RP will be a lot more powerful. Just good autofocus and battery life I think will make a strong difference.
@@k1ng92 I'm pretty sure the RP's AF will be a lot better but A7II batteries should have a lot more juice, don't you think? At least that's what it says on the spec sheets.
Ive had both cameras and if your into video go with the RP plus it jas a flippy screen. If you want access to perfectly fine af, tons of adapters and cheap lenses other than ef mount then go a7ii.
For photography which is better A7ii or A6400?
Jossi a7ii
Am stuck between this (the A7ii) and the A6400... Yeah I get the whole thing about full frame glass and stuff, but I'm looking at a camera for photos and videos (mostly for photos though ) I'm really concerned about the image quality (minus the lense selection thing)
If you do more photography you should get the a7ii
Unless you're a budding Ansel Adams or David Bailey. Technology chasing is a really bad move. In ten years time when you look at any image out of any camera that you buy then it will be better than what you took back ten years previously. The honest truth is it's the artistic talent of the photographer that counts. Have a look at Brassai, Robert Capa, the Hindenburg footage.
3:15 COSMOOOO!! :D
So, would you choose this over the Canon RP?
Im struggling with this same decision right now lol
Alfred Paolo sony > canon, all day, every day
You have a huge number of those batteries doesn't make the battery good right?
Sony A7II or Nikon D750? For stills mostly, help me decide!?
Go for nikon d750
Nikon
is there Eye auto focus? is there a Silent Shutter ?
Jon Hermannsson Yes, on their newest cameras. Not on their 5 year old cameras.
I think it still sells well in Japan.
I'm absolutely sure it is.
I love Cosmo!!!!
I have that same shirt.
I thought this could film in 1080p 60? That's what the website says.
It can and looks pretty good too since its on sale again i may get another one to put with the new 200-600.
Which one is better? The a6400 or the a7ii? When talking about photography! If I record some videos it will be very rare! Thank you.
If you need good autofocus the 6400 otherwise the A7ii
Video changed drastically
I will use this camera in coming few years,😢😢😢
Nice
I just want it for the low light functions. I saw a video done by lucus from trex arms shoot a night vision video with the IR filter off. was soo fucking cooooool
"GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE"
Great review! I wouldn’t take the A7II. It’s not that much cheaper than the A7iii - and the 3 is much better. Okay, it still only has 8 Bit Color, and that really sucks, but it’s much better than the 2 .
One thing you mentioned is for sure: Sony lenses are REALLY amazing! 👍🏻
Hopefully then A7Siii will be released soon 😃
... and they also are REALLY expensive and the selection is kinda limited compared to other systems! 👍
@@mineclashtv9709 Sony lenses can be brutally expensive - but not all of them. Compare the GM-lenses to the best lenses from Nikon and Canon... hen you find out that they are all crazy expensive... Regarding the "limited". Actually I have all I need von 12 to 300 mm.
A7ii with the kit lens 28-70 f 3.5 - 5.6 have the same qualety as the Sony rx 10 (1 inch sensor) olso in low lite. Only dof is better. So buy this camera not with kitlens.
For stills = YES!
For Video = NO! (line skipping & Aliasing destroys details in WIDE shots)
I Up(Down)-graded to the a7s and never looked back. 12mp is perfectly fine for Instagram photos and Cloud Storage.
But the autofocus on video ?
Please compare wth 6400/6600
