Is the Sony RX100V Worth Buying in 2019?!

- Another blast from the past! I used the Sony RX100V all of the darn time. It's one of my favorite cameras ever. But its coming up on its 3rd birthday so lets take a look back and see if after 3 years does this still stand up as one of the best cameras ever made.
Because its got all the specs and features that should propel it into the stratosphere, and there is probably a good reason why you see these things everywhere!

I bought this camera back in 2017 off amazon. I've upgraded to larger mirrorless cameras since, but those don't go everywhere with me -- the RX100V does. It's a constant presence in either my pocket or my backpack wherever i am. i've gotten some of my best shots thanks to having it at the ready. It's the ultimate stealth travel cam. I played with the RX100VI and I've looked at the VII but, they don't really do anything I need to justify the upgrade. Sure, they have a longer reach, but I miss my 1.8-2.8 focal range. I miss my ND filter. I do fucking wish it had a mic jack, though, but like you said, if I'm going to do video I keep an H1N and a Rode Video Micro around for that. The built in mic is just no good, you pick up the zoom in-out motor really bad with it. Love the V, it'll be a long time before I find a better hip shooter.
Thank you for this video, I’m buying this soon and I’m so hyped
i agree with you, i have the mark 5A model and i find it's image quality great for what i do on UA-cam, always love your videos.
Thanks so much! I tried a 5A but decided to keep my used camera instead of getting the 5A. But still looks like a great camera.
Pretty impressive -- and a very good value in 2019! Thanks!
I agree with you on the price. I really wanted this for a B cam and for B roll, but at $1000 it was way too expensive. Might have to revisit it now (refurb, maybe)
In regards to the audio, can you hear the camera trying to focus? I have this issue with my current camera and I HATE it! Also, what's the battery life like whilst taking videos? Nothing worse than fully charging your camera for a full day out and it's on the last battery cell by around 3pm. Great video!
I have had this same camera for 2 years and is still a "Go To" even with all my other larger and more complex rigs! Luckily got one heck of a deal on it as well :-) Highly Recommend!
I believe so and I still have mine great photo and great video camera
Yeah it absolutely it 😁👍
Thanks for the review was helpful
I'm thinking of getting it cause Casey is happy with it in low light. All my videos lately have SUCKED in low light situations. I want an affordable camera that doesn't get too much noise in video.
Just picked one up for 300 because the mic was broken. Absolute steal.
Great review
what about the older bigger brother of the rx line the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1
with that FULL FRAME goodness
great vid. you should compare this to the GoPro Hero 8
I've watched this video like 5 times this week... I don't know what to dooooo. If I buy a camera I probably wouldn't buy another one for a long time, so should I just get the a6400 and be set for years... Or get this and save 500 bucks? Uggggh
WOW - You are very good
reviewer :)
Love the tech vids. especially Rev. the Cheapest..
Well thanks so much!
Great video! Although I wish you would have also included the experience with the app. The app is terrible, unfortunately. Otherwise it’s a fantastic camera, for sure!
I sold mine and bought an A6500 (which I later sold to buy my current X-T3), and to a certain extent I still miss the Mark V, you are absolutely right it is an amazing camera:)
would you say that the rx100 can replace your mirrorless? I have gotten the a5000 for cheap with the kit lens and im feeling the screen is horrible and lack of viewfinder unnatural... for a couple hundred bucks more i can get the mark V, should I?
@@TheRedTech98 that’s where I am at currently. My mirrorless is great, but it has a viewfinder, NEX-6. I like being able to swap lenses and use manual focus with old glass even, but it just sits in my office most of the time. I was hoping it would be portable and go everywhere with me, but it’s just a little too bulky and the 16-50 kit lens that keeps it small lacks the aperture speed as well as zoom capability that the rx100 has. Plus it doesn’t have a flip up screen nor ND filter.
I designed the Smallrig cage!
Yo! No mic input is a deal breaker. :-( but amazing picture! Could be the perfect vlogging camera... except... the lens can easily get stuck. One of my earliest vlogs it happened. Luckily, I had my Leica Q!
This or Cannon g5x ii? Both about the same price, I'm completely torn! Want it mostly for photos (90%) over videos, prefer the looks and handling of the Cannon...
Please do the Canon G7X Mark III. The new features are very intriguing.
Landmark camera still for frame rates INSANE!my gripe is the colours what colour settings u recommend Sony apps one of the last cameras to have it some great cheap or free apps but in its own seperate menu to get to them oh the menu yikes!!Have to go in and out of that menu for apps and normal functions out mr is good thing though
When the first Sony RX100 came out, I instantly bought it. Only for photography. And yes - for the size it's really great. Even a bit shallow depth of field. But would I buy it today? The V is surely better than the VI, but honestly: If I only want to use pocket-size camera, I use my phone. If I spend so much money for a cam, I want more - more quality and more features. Then I rather take a "real" camera with me - 6400, A7iii, GH5, Canon, Nikon - whatever. It's that typical situation where you say to yourself afterwards: "Why did I only take that tiny thing with me and left my real cam hat home?!??!" ;) So ... no - not for me :) Great review anyway ;)
Thats true a lot of what normal point and shoots were used for is being usurped by cell phones. But I like having the built in ND and flip screen more especially if I'm making youtube content. But either would work well.
@@TheEverydayDad There is no right and wrong - depends on personal usage and needs. So you a right of course.
0:23 you used the word "penultimate" incorrectly. It means the second to last, or next to last in a series. Meaning there is still one more. Not that it is the final or best or ultimate.
Just bought one in 200 bucks. Absolutely happy.
@Jácint Cseke I am in Mexico!
If it had a mic input, I would buy it.
I use the xt20 as my regular camera and I was planning on getting the xt4, but I picked up an rx100 va for the convenience .
The audio is fine
I own RX100 IV and Nikon J5. Consistently, I pick Nikon 1 J5 over RX100. I rarely use my RX100 ever since I got an used Nikon 1 J5. RX100 is a very frustrating camera to use. Menu is not sensible. Ergo is so terrible that I can't shoot one-handed unless I palmed the camera (which I no longer see the screen or view finder). In addition, after about one and a half of daily useage, my RX100 lens became "sticky" and eventually I starting to notice dust on sensor. RX100 sensor dust issue turns out to be quite common. Anyone who is considering using RX100 as daily or Hiking/pocket camera needs to be aware of it.
hello, l agrre with you, sony rx100v is the best camara today i was wondering if you alredy figure it out how to have good sound in the sony rx100 v if you did, please show us in a video. thank you
I know I'm a little late at the party... how do the "color science" of the Rx100v compared to the new A6400/6600? Thank you!
Compare to iPhone 11pro what advantage do it have?
Thanks for the video! I just bought oneo in 2024 for 500 EUR. Can't wait to get my hands on it :)
I’ve just bought for $400 second-hand - Morocco
Is there an autofocus and autoexposure lock?
Wish it had an audio jack. Sony found a way to put one on the X3000 and RXO.
MegaWoodswalker RX100 VII has one. No ND filter tho.
I’m thinking to buy that cam
I am surprised the mark V vs Mark VI issue is not addressed. This is one of those rare cases where the previous model (the V) is significantly better than its successor. The removal of the ND filter and installing a much slower lens were idiot moves by Sony while not doing the one thing every RX100 V user was asking for - a 3.5mm mic input jack. I’d be fascinated by relative sales numbers because everyone I know prefers the V to the VI.
I thought saying that this was the best model was pretty clear that I didn't really like the VI all that much.
The Everyday Dad I understood your love of the V but with no mention of the VI I was not certain of your exact feeling about it. As I said, I am curious about relative sales numbers because you, me, and everyone I know all would buy the V over the VI because of features, and factor in the price, I have no idea why anyone would choose the VI.
BTW, I love your style in these videos - I am especially impressed by the way you are creating yourself as a brand. Enjoy your editing, lighting, and multicam usage, product shots, audio. Some of us do notice these details :)
Well, i recently bought the RX100 MK1 (at great price though) to complement my A5100, and i'm happy with it despite its age, so a rhetorical question for me..
would you say the rx100 replaces your mirrorless? I have gotten the a5000 for cheap with the kit lens and im feeling the screen is horrible and lack of viewfinder unnatural... for a couple hundred bucks more i can get the mark V used, should I?
@@TheRedTech98 Go for it
Canon G7x Mark 3 gets announced next week and it will have a mic input and 4K. New king
We'll have to see what they officially release but I'm excited.
Scott2436 The Canon line has some great features and I really like the way they handle exposure in difficult situations like back-lighting, but that super slow motion on the RX100 V combined with size and price makes it my first choice.
Only took Canon several years to catch up and update their features. Typical for Canon....So now they will just be caught up. By the time the competition releases new models Canon will be behind again.
Shit canon is just now getting 4k?
I saw on the rumors no information on the dual pixel auto focus so I might wait another 5 years for g7x mark iv lol
I don't care about the 4k, but the Canon does not have dual pixel autofocus due to buying an old version of sony's 1 inch sensor that only has contrast detect. That kills it for me imo.
Do we really need gimbal for this camera? Or built in stabilization is good enough?
Gimbal will always be better.
double digit viewer!
Hurray!
what is the sony camera on the left at 11:04 ???
Great Camera. I dream of Sony doing a Rx100Vii with stabilization and a Mic Input. One can dream hey :)
Truly that would be amazing!
Me too! Don't need zoom of the rx100vi, just give us good stabilization and a 3.5mm. I think the rx0 ii will force them down that route.
Keep dreaming...
did you see the new RX100 VII ?
Is there a sense to buy the very first rx100? How much worse is the video quality compared to a newer marks regardless of 4k?
Forget about the first edition video capabilities. For photos it is still pretty good.
Is it still worth to buy the rx100 m1???????????????????????
Everyday Dad can you do me a favour. can you compare the Sony a6400 with the sony nex 7 this will be really interesting
I dont have a nex 7 but I'll see what I can do.
@@TheEverydayDad I bought the a6400 and I wasn't that happy with it so what I done I return it price £1300 and I start digging on the web to check for a similar camera the Sony nex7 is the same shape as the a series the only problem it's that doesn't film in 4k and 1080p it's perfect for me I don't need more but what I'm surprised is that the nex 7 has a microphone Jack and the Sony a6000 which is a 1080p camera doesn't have a microphone Jack in the end I went on eBay and I bought on action the nex 7 with 280£. Also I've noticed that this camera has almost all the shortcuts on 2 butons iso and light . Which I believe this is the best feature ever ( mecanic butons)
Can you do an updated Rx100V vs a newer Samsung or Huawei P30? I think the RX100 is great for video.. but for photos.. the smaller sensor doesn't make it "great" for photos compared to a smartphone... oh i and i disagree that we've reach peak IQ for cameras... there is much more in sensor tech to allow more light without massive lenses...
I believe hes referring to more's law or w.e. in the last 40 years cameras have advanced by alot. Sensors tech in the last 5 years really hasn't and most manufactures use the same physical sensor from Sony
It doesn't matter how good the image quality out of your camera looks if your audience watches it in 720p. Or if the space you upload it mauls it with some kind of compression for delivery. We definitely reached peak IQ for online content a couple years ago.
@@ryanthomas9306 I think there is much more improvement in software than hardware... when qauntum dot becomes a reality.. sensor tech will get another boost.
@@TheEverydayDad very true!. Most people are viewing UA-cam from their phones and don't have unlimited data/fast datarates... but video encoders are getting better... you can do 360 and 8k videos on UA-cam!.... in the audio world, they released near lossless audio at low bitrates... didnt canon or sony release a new raw format that is half the size? Imagine raw video streaming in the future... the software needs to catch up!
Why everyone is giving feedback only about the video quality??? I need this camera to take photos on gigs, but I see no reviews about photos, damn.
How is the color science on the RX100VA? Any chance they will get the same look and PP of the A6400 and A7iii? Also, are you shooting in PP1 without color grading? How do you get the colors and white balance to look so good? I agree, awesome camera for travel/backpacking.
I have the A7RIII, rx100va, and a6400 and use PP6 (cine2). They're all a bit different. You can start with the same grade/adjustment layer but there is generally some extra effort if you want it to look seamless. I'd say the colors and contrast are most prominent in a7riii, very close on the a640p but you need to bump it up a bit on the rx100va to match
Kyle Pugliese thanks for the reply. I have both the RX100VA and the A6400 and shoot in Cine2. What settings would you recommend on the Rx100? I apply a LUT in post for all my footage.
How abt low light performance???
Ahem a6400 flip up screen that crushed so many hopes and dreams😂 Refresh my memory, is Sony the only brand flipping up like that?
Enjoying the standing vids, you appear to be burning some of the diet cherry coke* energy. I think it comes through in a good way. Wait! Are the chairs getting reupholstered....or gone?

can it zoom while videoing ?
sandy moonstone yeah it’s slow though
Best PAS camera ever made!! Agree 100% !!! getting the Rx100 Vll tho :)
You didn’t say anything about the lowlight performance? That would’ve been great to do a little footage on low lighting nightlife club concert scene? 🤷🏽♀️
anyone hack their rx100 mk4 mk5 mk6 for 4k temperature limits?
How about in 2022?
5:14 I guess you don’t know that the RX100 VII has a mic in jack .
I love Sony's cameras, but the only issue I really have is that the image doesn't really seem sharp to me. It's kind of like a muddy pixelated mess. Then again, it's quite a small, compact camera and I'm nit-picking.
LOL....😂😂😂 no disrespect but you may need glasses, the image I've seen are fabolous....sometimes it depends on who uploaded it & how they set up there camera.
So TEDD if you only had $500, you would pick this over the Lumix G85?!
Depends on your needs. If you're going to invest further in the line, then g85 is way to go. But if you want something on you at all times and want badass autofocus, go Sony.
The contrast based system in the g85 will cause hunting at lower lights. I had to use specific tracking settings to maximize the efficiency, which sucks for run and gun
I'd probably go with the G85, better stabilization and a better platform to grow with. But I'd learn how to manual focus with it because its autofocus is terrible.
@@TheEverydayDad unless you get a cine lens, focus by wire is terrible. It's really hard to get used to unless you have an external monitor to see the zebra.
Even trying to focus by wire on Fuji is almost impossible.
@@ryanthomas9306 its totally fine if you just train it... there also are lenses like the oly 12-40 pro which I have, and it has marks on the lenswith the focus distance... so all goodjust needs bit of training
@@froznfire9531 yah true. I had the 12-35 ii and I struggled with it. I constantly looked at cine lenses.
I just got it for £360 From Cex!
Just picked one up for $350.
I am not falling for it again! lol Not going to make me buy this. p.s I got the a6400 thinking it was cool then BOOM ROLLING SHUTTER! MASSIVE AMOUNTS SO MUCH IT TURNED INTO JELLO!.
Narrow path You are shouting so loud that you are clipping and distorting. Nope, can’t really understand what you are saying because of the volume, but then, I wouldn’t expect too much from someone who says they bought a camera because it is cool, so maybe I am not missing anything.
hi everyday dad
Hello!
@@TheEverydayDad would you recommend the canon m50
the 4k on that is way better than the 1080
Tiny tiny tiny metal bar of soap form factor. But as a stealth street shooter? Duh, are you nuts? 4K UHD for 5 minutes is not horrible. Tiny camera with no heat sink area that is pretty good. Stupid good B roll and C roll camera too. I have an a7ii and just bought a RX-10 in perfect shape for almost nothing. A $1300.00 almost for the price of a so so camera today. As you can tell I am vested in the Sony. Doesn't hurt it even takes the same batteries as my a7ii. Obviously the RX100 V will not. But on the go in a pinch shot or short smashing video, you got to be crazy to get anything else. Canon and Panasonic are in here, but dang this Sony is good. It will always be on my Joby. Just don't feel like dropping it really!
Probably need a gimbal
Since you are a caffeine freak you better off talking standing, gives a better groove! Besides the jumping transitions!
Nice, I also like standing up more, I don’t feel like I’m trapped to the desk 👍
The Everyday Dad I like the standing up too: seems to let you give off your natural energy a bit more:) great review!
My Samsung NX Mini is a much better camera and has a much better battery life and while it only records in 1080p 30fps is takes better video and better photos. That’s why I bought 2 of them. The Samsung is much smaller and much more affordable as well. You can get one with a lens and battery for about $200 while a Sony RX100 is still selling for about $600 to 1200 for RX100 V or newer. Last but definitely not least is that the Samsung NX Mini never overheats ever.
It looks like my old phone that cost only a hundred twenty lg v30
Try zooming in with it and get back to us.
@@TracyDavis904 yep looks very similar but I recommend you use open camra app set video and photo quality %100
Set video to 200 megabits a second then set video and photo processing Edge's off this will allow you to get even higher quality then you can zoom in with video and it only crops on your sensor allowing you to get 2 times Zoom on 4K how much higher on Lower settings also allows for 1080 240 fps
Sony camera is useless to me. It's 8bit color I can't do much with it.
