I'm whispering in my A7 Mark 2's ear "You have nothing to fear".
Juan Quispe also whispering to my wallet’s ear “you have nothing to fear” :p
1 minute in and I'm already reminded why I'm saving for the a7iii. Thank you Julia
The best camera is the camera you can afford! ;)
@@bijosn You're better off getting what you can and shooting til your hearts desired than doing nothing at all! :))
I think the phrase is “The best camera is the camera you have on you” not what u can afford...
The best camera is what you are able to get/afford. She is right. If you are only able to afford an entry level DSLR like the rebel series than that's the best camera you have. You can do so much with that camera. Don't pay attention to all these upgrades you don't need. You can learn alot with the most basic camera. When you start outgrowing the entry level camera because you have so much experience, then you can worry about the next camera.
I've had the A7ii for the past two years and I'll be upgrading to the A7iii soon. I find the former was adequate for landscapes and wedding photography but when I decided to get into wildlife photography I realized the A7ii's shortcomings: only 5fps, no silent shutter, autofocus letting me down a lot.
I also find the battery on the A7ii runs out far too quickly.
Been using the A7 II for three years now. It’s a great camera and I think it’s all about how you edit. Both cameras are vastly superior compared to any other mirrored cameras on the market. The sensors are amazing and the speed of the shooting is amazing. If you’ve never used a Sony camera you will be blown away by both. The one thing I noticed mainly in this video is the ease of editing. I noticed she had a much easier time getting rid of distractions in the image and the light pollution. Plus the a7 III looked a lot more true to color which was pretty cool. But honestly if you’re saavy with using color channels in Lightroom this isn’t an issue. Definitely would love to field test an A7 III though
Great unbiased advice. You illustrate the difference between a photographer and a tech head. As a photographer you know what you need and don't. Nice video.
Julia , one thing that has also improved in the mark 3 is the colour science- it is quite noticeable even in your examples. The Sony a7iii was a no brainer for me - I didn't even consider buying the a7ii when I bought my first full frame camera. I came from using an a6500 and the better ooc colour was immediately striking. Two years is a lifetime in camera body technology!
Just switched to FF and got the A7II at a very affordable price (in budget) but quickly became obsessed about whether I should stretch to the next model up. Your video has really helped me realise that for me, a budding photographer, this is more than sufficient for my needs especially seeing some of the amazing work you've managed to produce using it too. Thank you!
Thanks for the comparison! I recently picked up the A7ii for casual photography on family outings, kids sports, hiking and fly fishing trips. For that purpose it works great!
Thank you Julia, that was informative and you gave me a peace of mind, keep up with the good work. You now have a new subscriber and a thumbs up 👍.
I was JUST considering switching to Sony. Perfect timing! Thanks Julia!
Literally the exact video I was looking for. And you confirmed my suspicions. While the A7 iii is an absolute beast and is 100% worth all the praise it gets, the A7 ii was so ahead of its time it still holds its ground to this day and is still an amazing camera (for the price).
I'm actually a Fuji shooter myself and was looking up prices for the glass and gear I wanted to invest in, but when I did my calculations I found out it would literally be cheaper to buy a used a7ii and lenses of the same focal length I'd get on my Fuji, which just blew me away. Like right now you can buy an 85mm f1.8 that's literally $400 while Fuji's equivalent is around $1000. I would just save $600 right there, and Samyang lenses for Sony are so cheap it just blew me away.
THANKYOU FOR THIS! I really needed this.
Thanks for this video, I’ve been struggling with the upgrade decision for months. Deciding to upgrade glass instead of the body.
Thanks for the great comparison! It helped a lot. Cheers from Tokyo!
There are three not mentioned differences:
1) AF frame coverage
2) Compatibility with adopted lenses which is far better on A7III
3) Near FW upgrade of A7iii (r3, 9) which makes big step forward in AF usability even in video
(I've upgraded from DSLR and the Eye AF is much better option than moving AF point around the screen [with Eye AF I can change composition anytime I want without losing continuous AF], next FW update also adds face/eye tracking thru leaves/grass not missing any shot...)
@@lewismartin9812 It is not big advantage, because it can not be used on moving subjects and under artificial (flickering) light...
Your video couldn't have come up at the most perfect time. Been shooting with an entry level Canon DSLR for a couple of years now and have been contemplating on upgrading and switching over to Sony. The A7ii is looking very attractive at it's current price point.
Really thanks for this video, i decided what camera buy with this review. Hi From CHILE!
Thanks. This is very clear and helpful!
I am getting into the hobby side of shooting and am leaning towards the A7II. It comes down to cost and function. I also have some old film lens from my film days I will need to get an adapter for so that plays into my choice as well. Thanks for the review, Cheers!
would love to see a comparison video between the mark ii and iii!!! thanks so much
I sold my d800e for a7ii last 4 months. I miss the sharpness of 36mp but mirrorless hybrid AF helps me alot especially using manual lens and availability of peeking focus. For now I am quite happy with it.
Hi Julia, loved this video really gave me something to think about.🙏
This was extremely helpful, thank you!!!
This Video is exactly what I‘ve been waiting for years
Great work! What is your most favorite camera? What camera do you suggest for beginners? Please make a tutorial on how to start photography as a side career or full time. How to edit and give the copies to the clients (if you give them hardcopies or send it by mail, or saved in a USB).. Love your work! 🥰🙌🏼
Thanks for helping in my decision Julia
I have two a7II bodies and one a7III. For the money the a7II is a great camera and can get the job done most of the time. The a7III is a vastly superior camera however. Auto focus in video is much better in the a7III. With that said for those who do stills and video there is only one choice and that's the a7III. The battery life alone for videos is worth it. I agree with Julia on most points and that if you are on a budget or a casual shooter the a7II is fine but if you lean more towards pro and like to do video don't buy it. Get an a7III.
Guessing there will be a few used A7iii on the market when Sony release the A7Siii
U did a great job in this regard, comparing review is better and helps to make decision easily, love from Bangladesh
Interesting, Thanks, toying with the idea of upgrading my A7ii & keeping my A7Rii, so the Rii becomes my second camera. I think the longer battery life isn't that big a deal, the batteries are so small you can slip a few in your pocket easily, but not having to is a much better deal. The Dual card slot is a deal breaker, had a card go down on me once, so I know it's rare, but it's always in my mind, like you say at a wedding !!! Please yes do a follow up of a shoot so we can compare, you nailed this vlog & I'm almost convinced... Thnx
Thank you. That was very helpful.
Another great video Julia 👍
Thank you. This was very useful for me.
I own a A7ii, no plan for upgrading. Your explanation is excellent!
Gordon Szeto just got mine yesterday. And haven’t tinkered with it yet. How’s video quality. I’m Comin from a t5 so I’m tryna get familiar with how to use the sony
For the low light test the A72 photo was in jpeg and the a73 was raw. Kind of an unfair test.
Thank you for all the knowledge i really appreciate that!
Hi Julia, my buddy has an A7II and I an A7III; i find the difference clear and remarkable, and so does he. The focus system, speed of shooting, battery life etc are important for us, as we photograph race cars on tracks and need the focus + frame rate + buffer. If the cost difference is worth it, that depends on available budgets and use as you explained. The dynamic range of the A7III allows it to use faster shutter-speeds, even in bad lighting.
Awesome Video! I love my a7ii but would love to test the a7iii :D
Sony A7iii FTW. I've jumped from the A7ii and I dont regret it all. Dynamic range in the A7iii is beyond amazing. 693 focus point vs 119. A7ii isnt a bad camera at all only for photos only.
I am just starting with fashion blogging and i want to focus on video! Would you recommend a7ii or iii? Thanks! also does the body also do the work or will i need to buy an extra lens?
The A7II has eye detection too... just not continuous
I would also mention the silent shutter option on the Aiii. This is the reason I watched this video as I often take photos at indoor jazz sessions and I'm frequently embarrassed when shooting during quiet passages of music with my Aii.
oh wow thank you for jumping right into the subject - no stupid intros no noise - this is how EVERY video should start
just found your channel today, i love i. ive subbed
Thanks. I have an AR7v and wanted something with fewer megapixels. I don't need a gazillion for every shoot. You helped me decide at 6:40. Dual card slots are a must for anyone shooting for a living. Single card slots are asking for trouble. Thanks Julia for helping this old pro make a decision.
Thanks Julia, as usual very sincere approach to your videos. I wish everyone else here also make videos like yours - honest and sincere. 👌🏼👍🏼
Great video! thanks for all the helpfull info!
I bought the A7ii and so far I am happy with it. However as soon I can I will get the Mark iii. Patience
Gerson Madrid just two days ago I traded my mark iii for the Sony a7ii. Very heavy camera and bulky. Since I’m just a lifestyle photographer fits my needs much better.
@@livesidewonder Why not go for the one of the A6000-series cameras instead? There really isn't that much of a difference between the A7ii and A7iii
Great comparison video, that A7III is so advanced! I just bought a second hand a7II at a good price. I plan to use with my manual Zeiss ZM 35 f/2(walk around) and Leica 90 f/2(Portrait). I regret selling my Zeiss Ikon rangefinder for $900 7 years ago, they are so expensive now! The a7II is the next best thing and it has IBIS!
Fantastic video. This was such a clear and helpful breakdown. Thank you!
Thanks for this video!! Fantastic!
Amazing Video like the Sony A7ll the camera was great especially the sample shots
Thanks for the review its crystal clear and sharp
Thank you very much Julia, this kind comparisons is I am looking between a7ii and a7iii. More comparisons please
What lenses do you use? Are you now using native Sony lenses? Or do you still use your favourite 35 and 50?
What camera do you use for your UA-cam videos? And do you use any filter. I love the color and the quality of it!!
I have the A7II now and I think it is a good camera with a good sensor, great colors and a good dynamic range. This is my first digital full frame camera ever, so for me it is a big step forwards. I use the camera to make images of my paintings (manual focus). Thank you for your video.
Hi Julia, the Sony A7(R)II series also have eye-af that works great. You’ve didn’t mention this in your review.
Looking at getting either. I mainly do Car photography and debating on which one to go with.
Another difference worth noting is that the A7III has silent shooting. That and the other reasons you mentioned was enough to make me upgrade this week.
Awesome video as usual.. Thanks.
I have query which is not related to this video - where do you buy camera and lenses from?
I hope next time you will show us both cameras so we can see the size and compare. good review thanks
Excellent video! Thanks. Leaning towards A7 II with MC-11 and X100F in stead of A7 III. Have lot of Sigma ART lenses, so AF-C is not important as I understand it is not supported, only AF-S
Was great to see you give a run down. As the help on the canon 35mm L mk2 has not let me down at all. But it’s been on my mind ever since adding my first non canon lenses to my good kit. Being the sigma Art 50 and 85. Which has made it harder for a back up and extra body that I can still use my canon lenses. As it was going to be the canon 5D mk4 as I originally did so much on the 5D original when I bought it a month after release. So I blame you 😂. No really the A7 3 now having two slots has thrown me. As took many yrs to get my 1DX mk2 which I absolutely love and would not ever regret finally getting my dream canon yet canon or a huge change to Sony not as main but still flexible in of two bodies has been very good for number of different reasons and certain shoots. So i would love to see s shoot with some raw out of camera views. It’s a big thing as I’ve been with canon since film and still grab a roll just to get that old feeling of no previewing and the first look at those pictures for the first time lol. Just one of those things you do 😆. Any thing you would like to throw in as you’ve been using the. Canon and added the new kid on the block lol. That may help in this choice. Cheers look forward to your next live stream like last yrs one which was fun and I think everyone got a little something from that day. 👍🤷♂️🇦🇺
I just got a Sony A7iii coming from a Canon T5I So happy I did, I love this camera for my hybrid shoot style!
i've been looking for a video like this for so long and thank you for your insights. really want the a7iii so bad as my first camera, but i'm on a tight budget, so might purchase a used a7ii in the next couple days and then buy some lenses.
Hi Julia thank you for this, learnt here the A7ii is a lot better than I had thought. Got a bargain today used for £880 including a 24-70mm lens.
Ciao julia! I love your videos, thank you!Which lenses do you suggest for sony a7iii for portraits? Thank you!
Sony A7ii also have eye AF, I use it all the time, have it custom keyed to AF-ON button.
Yup, but not continuous... after the camera grabs focus or frames a face you get to use it by pressing the custom key you have set it to, but not continuously like the A7III
6-12-2020/Seattle: perfect vid for me right now; looking at both models as I write this.....because I want the EVF with HSS flash. Thankyou.
Love the compare and like always more than one way to look at it. I personally would now always advice the a7iii over the a7ii. Resale value, longer life cycle because of software upgrades (at least 2 big ones are coming) and better support/testing from external companies are but a few. Also once you get really deep into a compare there are about a 100 small changes that for 'basic' shooting you probably won't use until the day that one of them you need. The 'invest in glass' i would normally agree with but in this case i don't because of the resale value in 1 or 2 years of these 2 models will almost 'fill' the gap. If you really can't push your limit keep using what you are using now since 2 things happened / will happen soon. Many will jump from a a7iii to a a9 now its clear with its updates how amazing that camera is and will stay and once the a7s3 comes out (for video) many will drop the a7iii for that. This will mean that we will see many slightly used a7iii's hit the market... just my 2cents.
Daniel.
I bought my Sony a7ii because the photographer i worked with on a huge commercial shoot I was on, was shooting with it, so I would say it's good for paid work too. Thanks for the comparison, I will upscale once I know my camera well enough and keep as a backup.
On the A7 II, can we increase the burst mode fps by disabling RAW or lowering image quality?
i take a lot of burst photos when i do senior portraits (popping champagne, throwing and blowing confetti) so i’ll probably have to do the mark iii 🙈 i also feel like the eye focus is going to be a game changer
Thank you for doing this video.
What microphone did you use in this? Sounds so crisp!
Amazing video! 👌🏻
I don't "NEED" Eye-AF but, it certainly makes life easier...
Great rewiew! Tnx! Regrads from Croatia!
I recently got the A7 ii and I have to say it is a keeper. For casual photography the battery life is amazing. I took it last weekend for a casual photoshoot at a garden and I took pictures for about 1 1/2 hours without shutting it down. It was on all the time and I took around 200 pics. The final battery life was around 60%. The manual controls put you in a learning curve, but some of the dials are very useful even before reading too much manual if you put it in Auto or P modes. The offer with the 28-70 kit lens gets you a lot of value with the understanding that this camera is not for extreme zoom ins (unless you already have the zoom lenses or can afford them). But if you value photography this camera is very enjoyable and a steal for the price. If you study the specs and you need 4K or long battery you can go for the III if you can afford it. But you can be very happy with the II knowing that 4K is not very practical today for home videos and long battery life is more critical for professionals.
I noticed the difference in the skin tones in the side by side video comparision. I own the A7 II since 2015. It's an amazing camera but the A7 III is surely a big upgrade. Even the silent shooting is missing on the mark II..
Yes please do a comparison video
Great video. Thank you Julia.
The MkII seems to have a warmer color cast but it looks like any difference in sharpness would be at the pixel peep level.
I can get the MkII with the 24-105 G for only a slightly higher price than the MkIII with the 24-70 kit lens. Almost a no-brainer after this video since I'm not overly-concerned with burst or eye autofocus.
And honestly with Lightroom's enhance RAW feature, MP density isn't much of an issue any more either.
I print super sharp landscapes from my old, old, OLD Canon EOS T6 (18MP APS-C with the EF-S 24mm f/2.8) at 36x24 inches and there is no problem with soft details.
Good point, in some scenario, eye auto focus and quicker overall focus will do a good amount of difference in some tight moments where you just had to point and shoot
That ease of mind where you know you'll get the eye in focus is something I personally would use in Photographing Human interest, etc.
But in other scenario like landscape or timelapse it won't come as handy
TL;DR : Human, A7III. Others or in Budget A7II, although A7I is pretty good, the prices different between Mark2 and Mark1 makes it no brainer imo
Is this a good enough upgrade to the A6000, I want to buy it with the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 for event photography, already own A6300 with the sigma primes for video work
I switched from A7 OG to A7 Mark 3, that was a great upgrade for me!
I am just starting with fashion blogging and i want to focus on video! Would you recommend a7ii or iii? Thanks! Also do you think i need an extra lens to start with? or will just the body do the work?
Great video! :) you said earlier that you prefer the live view mode on mirrorless bodies. What about dslrs? Very few photographers talk about how much time can you use the live view mode on dslrs? Is correct that using it can damage the camera? Somebody told me... I would love to watch a video from you about live view mode on dslrs!
This one is neither . It’s the A7, we use it with Canon lenses. And a Sigma Emount adapter. Am wondering which. ii or iii ? 🤔 thanks for your comparison video, it’s very helpful
Do you have a video showing what lenses you use for a wedding day?
Got an a7ii new for best price and decided to keep it and buy some good lenses.thank you your video has helped me to take a decision
I purchased my brand new Sony A7III about 2 months ago. About 2 weeks ago I started having a couple of focus problems with my 35mm Samyang lens. A7III kept giving me the "invalid lens" error, which made no sense because it is 100% compatible & I have shot weddings & events using the combo already with success. I figured it just needed to be cleaned, so I did that. But problem returned quite quickly. I looked at the lens mounting area on the camera near the sensor and noticed a small puncture in the metal. Figured that was it. So I sent the camera back to Amazon and ordered a new one. Just got my new one this morning and it works great, however, I notice the same metal punctures, (almost like little damaged areas) on the metal part of the index mount. MY QUESTION IS: Is this normal? Is this area supposed to look like this? I am sorry if this is a dumb question, but I just came over to Sony from that other company and I am not familiar with the builds yet. Please help.
Yeah, good idea on the onsite shoot
I had my mind heart set on getting a Sony a7 iii for Astro and Birds in flight as it seemed to have what I needed for this kinda photography but reading up reviews from lots of people there have been many problems with them such as shutter not working etc so I’m now thinking of getting a canon 5d IV instead as don’t seem to be as much issues with this camera
It would be great to se a comparison, I realy like my A7ii for the type of photography I do, but after I got an error on my sd card after reading the card in a usb card reader at the end of a wedding with all photos from the cermony, but I luckily recoverd It when I got home sweating. I would like to have that 2 card slot. Sometimes I get errors that I can fix in camera with image database recovery but at that wedding the camera asked If I wanted to format because it couldn't read so I took the card out and put It away in my bag and tried to go on taking photos at the party like nothing have happend 😖 I was so lucky to recover all images that time but don't know about next time.
I wish you talked about color science update on A7iii. Even in your video, A7iii seem to render images differently.
it seems like different lenses and post processing played a much bigger role in the differences
HI Julia, i am big fan of your work thank you for sharing your experience, Please could you give me an advice which macera to buy, i m thinking of Sony A6400 ( crop ) or go to Full frame Sony A7 II, it would be mainly for portraits and photography is my hobby :) thank you for answer i appreciate it
I’m just a hobbyist so I got the a7ii for under $1000 in November 2018. I’m happy with it
I'm shooting with an a6000, one adapted Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, and a Sony FE 85mm f/1.8.
I'm so ready to move up to full frame, and I'm looking at getting an a7ii, used, body-only, for around $600.
I mostly do portrait and landscape photography, no video.
Can you do a video on the video quality between the A7ii and the A7iii? I looking to use the camera for both photo and video for clients. I Just bought the a7ii and am still within the return period. For this looking to focus on video AF. Is it worth to go to the a7iii?
Which would u go for a a6400 or a7ii, I currently use a a6000 but taking a look at these both i would get the a7iii but up on the pricey end
I bought the A7II about three weeks ago and I really love it but I also felt some purchase anxiety because I was seeing folks saying how much better the A7III was and I was thinking about returning it and trying to come up with a extra 1K+. I’m glad you made this video so now I can let that anxiety go and continue to be happy with my A7II and further my craft. Thanks Julia!
I’m in the same boat. Thank you for your comment.
omg same
How long it can record 60 FPS 1080p before battery getting down?
Hi) which lens do you use at your work?
Same, thanks
