    Someone might want to tell Cornette that Ricky Medlocke was originally in Skynard in 71 be and 72, and has 3 songs on Skynard album "First and Last". Medlocke was also the guitarist and front man for Blackfoot, so I am pretty sure we all knew who Ricky Medlocke is...except Jim Cornette 🤨🤔🤣

    don't know how i never made the connection as to why i didn't like bonnie steamboat in that late 80s period but jim nails it. she was basically what debra mcmichael would be with mongo. no personal accomlishment but somehow she's out there, expensive clothes, jewelry and makeup, basically arm candy... an archetype heel

    TBH I never saw Steamboat in WCW so all I know I just heard after the fact. I wouldn't exactly call the in-character relationship between Randy Savage and Elizabeth healthy by today's standards, but it worked. Much harder to pull off if Bonnie "Steamboat" wears the pants.
    The way Flair's book tells it, Bonnie was threatened by Ricky's fame and popularity, and Ricky probably held himself back a bit for her sake. Hard to say how his WWF IC run would have turned out had he not asked for time off, because Steamboat was a HUGE threat to Hogan's spot as the top face. BUT, Ricky Steamboat as I understand it made compromises for his marriage, which in the end failed anyway. AND she got the legal rights to his ring name.

    • @piperar2014
      @piperar2014 5 років тому +3

      AND I hear Rick Rude was loyal to his wife including taping over his wedding ring for matches instead of taking it off. I guess Mrs Rude didn't mind her husband's womanizing playboy gimmick.

    • @mallorycarll6280
      @mallorycarll6280 5 років тому +5

      I'm not going to knock Ricky for trying to make his marriage work. He wanted to be a good husband and a good father, so props to him for that. From what I've heard, it sounds like Ricky was the one willing to sacrifice and keep people happy while his wife took advantage of him.
      It also sounds like his wife wanted to be a "Miss Elizabeth" type character. The problem was, that kind of image was starting to look outdated by the early 90's. If anything, WCW should have kept Ricky a babyface but let him tow the line between face and tweener... sort of like what Sting did when he eventually became Crow Sting.

  • @blacksabbath1022
    @blacksabbath1022 6 років тому +12

    I like the Ricky with the 90's Chicago Bulls theme. He had it first so it's something. His family man gimmick and Dragon gimmick were terrible. If he would have stayed serious like a Tanaka from Bloodsport(1988) he'd of been more people's favorite wrestler. Edit. Sirius yes. Fucking copyrights ruin a lot of great shit. Eye of the tiger, Iron Man, now this? Geez

    So Bonnie Steamboat was the Brandy Rhodes of her time?

    • @connordripps1480
      @connordripps1480 3 роки тому +1

      Here's the difference between Bonnie Steamboat and Brandy Rhodes: Bonnie was living off of Ricky's fame and Ricky divorced her and she had rights or likeness to his last name or something like that and Ricky as part of their settlement had to go to court to get his rights back. To my knowledge I don't think Cody's wife would go to the extent that Bonnie did.

    • @ralph8677
      @ralph8677 3 роки тому +1

      Brandi helped Cody with the creation & marketing of AEW. Bonnie married Ricky in the prime of his career, the same year he divorced his 2nd wife. While Brandi does need a reality check on her popularity, she did stand by Cody while he took a massive gamble. Bonnie was a home-wrecking ringrat who jumped aboard for the ride after the hard work & sacrifice was already over.

    As a 9 year old I hated that family man crap. There was no way I'd pull for him vs Flair.
    But years later that Family Man theme song while being pitted against my main man Rick Rude...holy shit. He was Ricky the Eunuch Steamboat in my book. But at least the family was back home by this point.

      😆😆😆 same here only I was 13. That show (one of the Clashes I think) where they had the segment in the ring where Flair had on the black mink with his ladies and Steamboat was with his wife and kid, I was there with my brothers here in Cleveland. Trust me when I tell you, Ricky was getting BOOED hard! I can't remember if that made it to TV (I think it did because it was live) but it was evident most of us didn't wanna see that.

    To be fair, Miss Elizabeth also wore expensive gowns. Obviously, Ricky was no Macho Man.
    But the say that the lyrics side on that Slam Jam album (and WCW themes in general during the era) were cringe-worthy is like saying Stalin had a moustache.

      I mean you could have a top guy who has "loves his family" as a trait. But you really can't have their character revolve around it. Lots of top faces have had "candid" vignettes where it shows them doing things with their family AMD that they love their kids, but it was part of a build.
