    Everyone says that Cable TV killed territorial wrestling, but I for one, who was in a "wrestling starved" area only being served by Mid South wrestling liked being able to see what was going on in Georgia, CWA, CWF, AWA, World Class--stuff I had only read about in wrestling magazines. Like a kid who only heard about punk rock in Rolling Stone magazine because all the radio stations in my area played country, I was curious, and once I found out, I wanted more. and there's lots of people like us. I only had my parents to thank for getting us cable TV because of it, we had the Score network (a secondary sports outlet in 1988 to ESPN) and I became a big fan of Memphis wrestling--I thought it was exciting! My high school friend who was a fellow wrestling fan was the biggest AWA fan in Oklahoma, thanks to ESPN. He actually went so far as to call AWA office to see if they could come to Oklahoma--I told him how the territorial system worked, they won't come as far south as Nebraska, but somehow he got a hold of a promoter who said he was interested. But you see, that's where it starts. Cable TV allowed people in different parts of the country to have their eyes opened to new things they might end up liking. You can't just assume that people in one territory are only going to like one kind of wrestling, just like you can't assume everyone in Oklahoma has to like country music. What if they might enjoy Punk Rock, if they never experienced it before? Which, by the way, we were one of the first areas to get MTV, and my eyes became open to a wider variety of music that I never experienced before, but that's another story. Variety never hurt anyone, and I'm sorry that it killed territorial wrestling, and if there was another way that it wouldn't have, I would welcome it, but I guess that was the price that had to be paid.

    A lot people don’t remember how JYD losing came about! JYD was supposed to face Paul Orndorff for the NA title in a loser leaves Mid-South match for 90 days but Paul got injured and Ted Dibiase wanted to face JYD for the belt in a LLT match despite stipulation staying and Dibiase was a Babyface but he had a black glove on to protect an injury himself and Dibiase the face was helped in the ring by JYD and Dibiase loaded up his glove and knocked JYD out and Dog had to leave and Dibiase for the first time became a heel instantly so when Dibiase the next week saw Stagger Lee knowing it was JYD show great emotion when he went after Lee. It was a great and clever angle that made fans happy cause JYD was under a mask

    • @rachet0708
      @rachet0708 Рік тому

      😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Dude, obviously you don't remember either because you got your shit all messed up.Nothing worse than someone acting like an expert and trying to tell people about something that they are completely clueless about themselves. First of all JYD won the NA championship from Bob Roop, who according to the storyline had sabotaged Orndorffs car to keep him from making it to a match against Dibiase for the title. Roop ended up beating DiBiase and was supposed to give DiBiase a rematch but JYD beat Roop in NOLA. Then JYD give DiBiase a shot on the TV telecast that resulted in the Heel turn. Second of all, The DiBiase heel turn that happened on TV was not a Loser Leave Town match. In fact DiBiase and JYD ran a whole angle of grudge matches afterwards that lasted in different forms for a couple of months. The LLT match was between Matt Bourne and Ted DiBiase (The Rat Pack) vs JYD and Mr Olympia on the T.V telecast, which was just a continuation of the JYD vs DiBiase Feud, and Duggan, the third member of the Rat Pack interfered in the guerilla suit and caused The Dog to take the fall who was then forced to leave town.... THEN came Stagger Lee who would eventually beat Ted for the title. There was also a whole 6 man tag team angle where Stagger Lee, Tony Atlas and Dusty Rhodes had some special guest matches with the The Rat Pack, before Matt Bourne was fired for beating the shit out of a fan in Monroe and blinding him.
      Dude if you want to start telling people a story, make sure you know the story first, because that was some jacked up bullshit.

    What they need to do to get that pop more than once is to do it the normal way the first time. And then the second time get a nobody wrestler that literally no one expects or is familiar with and run a few months of him in the mask to the point that everyone is sure on who's under the mask. Dusty or whoever like that. Then when they are unmasked it turns out the whole time that the fans were wrong and that really wasn't the person they expected to be under the mask. Then in another month or so you bring in the ousted wrestler hero in some other fashion. Like wearing the same outfit as the masked nobody and when everyone now thinks it really is the nobody wrestler you reveal it's in fact your hero. Or have the hero appear with the gimmick mask outfit on and show up to aid the nobody when he's just been beaten to pulp and the hero shows up in the same exact outfit and reveals himself. Or it doesn't even have to be a shell game like angle. You can just lead the crowd into thinking their hero really is under the mask and just have him appear on day out of nowhere with no warning. Like coming from under the ring to aid the nobody. Point is you mislead the fans into believing 100% that they know who's under the mask because they've seen the original masked wrestler angle and know all about it and blah blah. Call it the bait and switch angle or the shell game angle.

    Eric Bischoff was actually the very first heel authority figure in wrestling, Eric Bischoff joined the NWO several months before the mr. McMahon character debuted

    • @LMLR187
      @LMLR187 6 років тому

      well technically the NWO was suppose to be an organization separate of the WCW created with the intentions of invading and ultimately destroying WCW (odd huh?) part of that narrative over time did get lost but nevertheless, when Bischoff joined the NWO, he 'defected' from WCW to become one the leaders of essentially a rouge faction. however he still had ties to Turner Broadcasting which in turn kept him with some level of power. Then J.J. Dillon at that time was brought in to serve as an authority figure meant to represent WCW and fight off the NWO.
      on the other hand Vince McMahon was still the 'sole' owner and promoter of the WWF by he time he became a full heel. he never 'abandoned' his promotion to join the 'opposition', he ruled his empire with the proverbial iron fist with virtually no other authority around to stop him until the role of commissioner was re-purposed for a second time as a way to keep vince in check. but most of this happened with Vince still owning the WWF/WWE as chairman.
      in short, it may be sloppy, there is a lot of semantics to consider but Vince was the first heel authority of his own company.
