Bought a 2009 CL63 AMG a couple of months ago and saw that it had a carbon fiber airbox by Rentech under the hood. So I called Rentech in Florida with my VIN # and they told me back in 2013 they installed airbox, throttle body, headers and ECU tune for the original owner. Now puts out 577Hp and 533ft/lbs of torque. $20k worth of work on top of the $155k original sticker. Car is mint with 60k on the odometer, black on black. Only paid $30k for it at a Buick dealer, don't think they realized what they had.
Sounds like OBX has the same mentality as Speed Engineering: "Sure, it should fit." In terms of the final result, that sounds like the perfect daily. Not unbearable at idle, quiet while cruising, and it has a sharp and throaty bark when you get on it. I didn't realize those had 518 hp stock! As an aside, love this channel!
Love to see on your face when you have that smile of accomplishment after all the hours of busting knuckles, frustration , cursing up a storm because of it and all the need to just get away just to inhale to inhale a lung full of air lol, and the added extra work that you had to accomplish, Job well done again! Your UA-cam Vlogs are "Thee Absolute Best" always. When you picked up the ZO6 with the blown engine, I had to rewind it when you arrived at the co-op complex because it looked so familiar. My buddy just moved from the complex on the next block about 6 months ago. I sold him my C5 ZO6 which he kept in one of those garages after I bought a '19 C7 Grand Sport. Looking forward to you doing some more work on the Z,
The Greatest phrase ever said,”While your in there “ my father would say it over and over. To here you say it brings joy to my ears. Telling customers this I always makes me remember my dad pointing his finger at a part😂😂😂😂😂
so so so nice! The way you can take an exhaust system that is clearly not made for your car and then put it all together with fab work that turns out AMAZING. Man, such great content!! The car sounds just PERFECT as well.
Wow, normal I hate guys which tune the original m156 exhaust but this with original middle and end exhaust sounds really good, the best tuned m156 exhaust I ever heard! Greetings from Germany.
Pro Tip: take the valve covers off to reach the top header bolts. I have an 09 and instead of bamming on the header, I just custom made another steering shaft because that's where the interference was, unlike your car where it contacted the body. I'm almost positive those headers were made for 07-09 W211 E63 because there aren't any fitment issues like with your car. As far as the flared flange on the x-pipe, all you had to do was cut that part off and it would have slipped in like stock.
great vid! i know hindsight's 20/20 but...... those motors drop out the bottom so easy (once you take a look and see what your working with as far as lines/etc) a couple jack stands, your hoist and you can sag the kmemeber down to give loads of access without completely removing it. another option is to support the motor and lower the kmemeber slightly, a couple inches of clearence make the job so much better. ive removed/installed many benz drivelines and i feel your pain on the manifolds. all that being said killer car, i miss working on AMGs they are beasts.
@@RadFox1320 nope but to honest never really searched it out, when we were big into them at my shop, we had the luxury of a hoist and a 3 ton overhead crane/trolley. Raise the vehicle, have the motor suspended by the over head and used an air table to lower the k-member. I get not everyone has access to that kind of set up. But it’s definitely possible. I drop c5/c6/c7 vette crossmembers with jack stands and a floor jack to do cams, headers etc
There is nothing that beats the sound of a massive engine under heavy acceleration! My former 409 , 396 and 454 were so impressive in their day. Sure beats the rice burners !
Your car is gorgeous. I have a CLS 63 AMG with this amazing engine, here in Mexico. This is perhaps the last of the great German big block V8’s, with NA, and should be considered a must have for any Motörhead!
Same thing when I did LTH on my tundra, headers went in fine but tightening the nuts took FOREVER!!!!! I had to use 1/4" socket and extension to 3/8" extension to my 3/8" ratchet to tighten them down then go and warm the engine up and let it cool and re-tighten them again.
I feel your pain! I spent 3 days trying to get my cheap headers on my 05 E500. I think the problem is Mercedes uses the same motor in multiple cars and the companies don't account for the smaller C the Medium E and bigger S and also that the motor was used in the previous Models of E class. All they do is mass produce for the motor.
Not deleting the resonator = No drone happiness! Thanks for using gear that records stabilized footage. I didn't get violently ill watching your video. Subscribed!
Great to see someone else running OBX, I put mine on my 507 a couple of years ago and had no issues, power gains were insane, get compliments on the sound almost everywhere I go, and the price is 3 or 4x cheaper than other brands charging 3-4K for headers, ridiculous. Glad it worked out for tou
@@AmgKevo same brother, I’m happy the risk paid off because everyone was clowning me on the forums when I said I was putting them on lmao. Did you go straight pipe or X pipe for the second cats?
I've been waiting for this. Love the sound. I bought my 2011 a little over a year ago. The exhaust had already been modified. It has magna flow resonator and mufflers but honestly I don't like the way it sounds. The stock sounds more aggressive
hi I'm from Germany and I'm watching your video right now. Most Germans, like me, are very perfectionist and I'm currently at 9:15 and I think it's super cool that you're thinking about what you could do right away because it could happen a short time later. You see something like that very little and normally I hardly write any comments either, but here I thought I had to write briefly😁👍🏻 that actually has no relevance to the project and to UA-cam. but here you can see that it's important to you and not just, "ah, the main thing is that I have a new video for UA-cam". So now I'll keep watching your video😁😋 I worked at a Mercedes workshop myself and I can relate very well to how you felt 😆 I always wished I could do telekinesis with things like that so I could thread "that one stupid screw" without breaking my hand... Depending on the mileage, I would have changed the spark plugs when everything was removed anyway. But otherwise very well done! the car sounds really awesome. I loved this engine. Unfortunately we only had 2-3 customers who had the engine (2x C 63, 1x an E63 but this was only once in our workshop), we had another branch and most AMGs were repaired there. They also had all the special tools for the vehicles there. That's why most of the time we only had the "normal" Mercedes with us, unfortunately. But they had a few V8 or V12 engines there too, which was always cool too.
Yes, the car sounds fantastic, and you are an amazing wrench! My CLS 63 AMG is armoured at a very high quality standard, which of course added weight. But it is still a beast, and I love its road feel, as I do mostly highway driving, and the extra weight makes it feel very stable. I will gradually do some performance mods, just to get a little more power to weight in favour of power, but this engine is a babydoll. I also have a tuned SL63 AMG, but I prefer my NA big block, unless I want to go top down.
the perfect way to have exhaust! I looked for all the same characteristics on my turbocharged frs 👌🏼 loud when on it, quiet as stock when cruising, and no highway drone! I have a 3in custom exhaust, recirculated wastegate, one vibrant resonator and an electronically valved muffler (for the cops, I live in southern california lol)
Sounding sweet, For sure not the correct exhaust for this car, but your becoming the master fabricator of the exhaust systems and making it like it's suppose to be, great work Chris.
I've been looking for one of these for a while now. They're the epitome of what a high performance sedan should be and they just don't make them like this anymore. I owned an E39 M5, bought straight out of the lease program in '03. Great car but with a lot of very unique and expensive issues but even with all that, getting the car on the road always put a smile on your face. They (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) engineer these cars for road comfort, low NVH and air tightness. Every panel is backed with jute... lots of attention to minimizing cabin noise. IMO... and I'm getting older now... exactly what you want for a daily.. something you can actually carry a conversation on while driving at speed. Only downside for me and this car is lack of manual transmission.. but when you consider the other options of the era and their reliability issues? Keeps you coming back to this model.

MB master tech here. Those motor mounts were blown out and collapsed. Mercedes added the black rubber circle on the bottom so you can visually see them fail. New, the rubber will be convexed up in the mount and will have no movement, when they fail, all the fluid pushes the rubber down and out and will feel squishy. good call to change them. on a side note, your next battle will be the intake manifold. they are made of magnesium and like to rot away just like M113 valve covers
"While its apart" Yeah doing that on my truck. Tierod/Lower Balljoint... well shocks and the spring has to come out, Now's a good time to drop it.. crap but now the rear. Yay snowball
Magnetic 1/4 drive sockets would have helped with starting those header stud/nuts. They’re a pain in the ass to get to, but magnetic sockets make it easier.
