  • The big take away? The stock lead pickup in the Schecter is every bit as good as the Duncan Jerry Donahue!

Thanks so much for this video! Just got a PT special myself and felt the bridge was really weak. There was a clear difference in the midrange for me. Better balance and played with gain better. I don't twang much and I need the bridge to match the p90 better.

I’m still not thrilled, if I keep working on it I’ll try a Quarter Pound Bridge or call Seymour for the brightest P90 they make. Good luck

Yeah, agree with the conclusion. But you have a different PT Schecter - mine is the PT Fastback "Special 2". T-Deluxe style.
The pups are mismatched. The bridge is way too bright and the neck is way too dark. I've managed a workaround by splitting the neck to single and selecting the middle position, vol/tone pots adjusted to taste. But I'd really like to drop something better in there because it's such a great workhorse. And the Bigsby actually stays in tune - miracle!

While I hear and feel a difference with the JD pickup, even in this video, the big take away is that the stock pickup is very nearly as good as the Seymour Duncan replacement :)

    Hands down the JD pickup.

Subtle, but yes. Almost considering a “quarter pound” because of that P90.

How about the p-90? I have the same guitar. It's the only p-90 I have ever owned, I am not sure how I feel about it. Have you compared that one?

mjsthx1138 - I’m with you and am contemplating options. What I have done so far, and it’s helped, is to remove the p90 (you can just loosen the strings), tear the foam blocks out with tweezer type tongs and then cut them in half with a sharp razor blade... in half height wise so they’re not as tall. You may need to run a 1/16th inch drill bit down the mounting holes to deepen them - I did - and then put the blocks back in there and reassemble everything. This allowed me to get the p90 down further, just barely above the scratch guard. Then I backed out the pole screws - half turn, whole turn, turn and a half and then the same thing in reverse up to the high e. It really only took about 10 minutes and I think it helped. I also took the pick guard off but I don’t think you’d half to, but what I DID realize is that there’s room enough in there for middle position strat pickup... hmmm \m/
I’ll play it a while but I’m thinking about a p90 that’s a bit brighter. Maybe a Seymour Vintage for the bridge position. Pickups are so hard to dial in with out trial and error - hate it. Good luck

@@oldguyjammin9732 Sometimes I love the p-90 sometimes I want to swap it, It's the same old question, how much do pickups mater, this p-90 versus an after market for $119 is it really going to be much better?

    • @oldguyjammin9732

mjsthx1138 - you’ve touched on a very deep and philosophical “ponderance” that prevents many a wannabe musicians from ever truly expressing themselves because they’re waiting for that particular tone, pedal, guitar, or amp to finally take them their when in reality all the pedals, guitars and amps all pretty much do the same thing. It’s what you do with them that counts. It’s a good thing Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Rhoads (fill in the blank) didn’t succumb to the same sickness, lol. I doubt an aftermarket it would be TOO MUCH better, but it would probably be different :) Try the easy mod I talked about and see what you think. I played it for an hour or so last night and quite like it. My biggest issue was the increase in volume when switching, secondly the darkness. The mod helped both.

@@oldguyjammin9732 I don’t get too cut up in this stuff. I have been playing for 32 years and have owned probably 20 guitars in that time and only bought 2 after market pickups 😂. But the quality of these mid range guitars has gotten to be so good compared to 25 years ago that I suspect they must cost cut a little with the tuning heads and electronics. Anyways. Good times.

As a tele fanatic, I love that you left in your out take at the beginning of the video😁 I'll comment after I'm finished watching this...yup, I agree.. More balanced tones with the Seymour Duncan... I modded a Glen Burton I got 2nd hand for $80 (I think a new one is $180)..I bought this thing because the neck is awesome ... with a twang king neck pickup and a chopper-T bridge pickup. I think S-D's are the best pickups around.

casey lee - that’s cool, I haven’t heard of Glen Burton (so many makers these days) but I do have a pair of pups by Bill Lawrence that I was going to put in the Wolf Tele but then... too heavy and dark. I’d like to find a little, light weight beater that stays in tune and mod it with the Lawrence pups. I’m off to check into Burton guitars, lol. Thanks!

Interesting... So, your goal was to make the guitar less versatile. Good job then, I guess.
